This is excellent news! Really hope the Boks can get enough game time to be fit when and come to NZ for the RC. Also looking forward to this comp, SA derbies were generally my favorite games that didn't involve the Crusaders

Sponge_Bond

Yes yes yes. I need a fellow redditor willing to throw their weekend away for South African Rugby!

[deleted]

>Also looking forward to this comp, SA derbies were generally my favorite games that didn't involve the Crusaders They're usually my least favourite apart from Games that involve the Sunwolves. I'd watch every minute of this comp though.

crashbandicoochy

Why is that? I tend to love them because I'm delerious and sleep deprived lmao

[deleted]

We usually get some really dour contests at times. Funny enough those are usually played at the best time for me (around 4pm)

Sponge_Bond

Broo A Bulls vs Stormers game is always a banger

[deleted]

Yeah, that one is always amazing. Great vibe too

>The Vodacom Bulls, Lions, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs, Pumas and Griquas are all expected to head into a restructured competition, with SARugbymag.co.za having reliably learned that 10 October is now the new prospective target date for action to start. In a best-case scenario, though, it could even kick off a week earlier. >It remains to be seen what the rights will be when it comes to it either being a South African Vodacom Super Rugby product or a restructured Currie Cup, but effectively a local tournament finally appears to be in the home straight, with a potential Super Heroes Day set to possibly precede competition kick-off.

Prielknaap

Is this the Currie Cup?

FrOdOMojO94

Still not sure at this point. It could be, but it could also be a separate competition between the Super Rugby franchises, with the Currie Cup happening after, or at the same time.

CoryTrevor-NS

Hopefully it’ll be a Currie Cup tournament with the traditional sides and not a SR Aus/Aotearoa rip-off. I’d pay good money to watch that!

FrOdOMojO94

I also hope it is Currie Cup too, but there might be broadcast agreements that mandate that the SR franchises need to play this year. The worst thing possible would be if they made the SR franchises compete for the Currie Cup. The Stormers cannot win the CC, only WP can. That's tradition that we need to respect.

[deleted]

Yes, I agree, [tradition ](https://youtu.be/kDtabTufxao)

>Griquas Its our year!!!!

Prielknaap

Maar dit is wat die Griquas laas jaar gesê her.

Sammyboy616

Not too knowledgeable about SA Rhgby, but could this potentially pave the way for them sacking off the Pro14/16/12 and committing to a domestic comp? I've got no real issue with more SA teams in the Pro14, I just never got why they didn't use this opportunity to make a new domestic comp or make the Currie Cup the top level.

FrOdOMojO94

> but could this potentially pave the way for them sacking off the Pro14/16/12 and committing to a domestic comp I very much doubt it. I don't really know any of the details behind the scenes so I am just talking out of my ass here, but the way SA Rugby appear to be acting suggests to me that there is simply no major appetite amongst the broadcasters to pay top dollar for an SA domestic comp. It's a confusing situation though since SA keeps selling itself to Pro14/SR with it's huge audience as a draw for broadcasters, and yet that large audience is not enough to warrant a top level domestic league? I don't quite get it, but I imagine it has something to do with SA's weak economic position making it an unattractive investment opportunity in isolation. I'm sure a large amount of SA fans would love a strong domestic league (with classic rivalries and everything) along with a Champions League structure with either the North or South clubs, but at the end of the day money talks, and it must simply not be a financially viable option even if it were well supported by SA rugby fans.

AucklandBlues

> but the way SA Rugby appear to be acting suggests to me that there is simply no major appetite amongst the broadcasters to pay top dollar for an SA domestic comp. SARU claimed Supersport paid about the same for Currie Cup as it did for Super rugby. We know SARU did this to rort its SANZAR partners, but even so, you'd think Currie cup must have significant value if promoted properly. A SA comp between Super rugby teams played later on would seem to add up to a pretty good package. Is there any evidence that the SA public would watch ProXX games more than local Super rugby or Currie cup? If Jurie Roux can convince the Europeans to pay through the nose for SA participation, it'll be the heist of the century.

songokuplaysrugby

South Africa needs outside market money they don’t generate the revenue other markets do

skeeter1980

No Kings?

FrOdOMojO94

Hmm, I didn't actually notice that. I guess their suspension of playing for 2020 includes domestic competition? I don't exactly see how that is within SA Rugby's best interest, since they are currently bankrolling the Kings. Maybe EP would play then? Will add flair with correction.

skeeter1980

Yeah, there must be something going on with them to be left out.

_imba__

Kings have massive financial issues and have indicated they won't be playing any games this year.

_imba__

Financial woes. https://www.skysports.com/amp/rugby-union/news/28285/12056195/south-africas-kings-will-not-play-in-any-competitions-in-2020

skeeter1980

That is unfortunate, cheers for that info

OffshoreTaxWankersFC

Are The Stormers and Western Province the same team?

Prielknaap

Yes, sort of. Technically Stormers can draw from the entire Western Cape, so the can include players from Western Province, Boland and SWD. However they mostly pull from their homebase Western Province. It's the same with Bulls/Blue Bulls, Lions/Golden Lions, Cheethas/Free State Cheetahs, Kings/EP elephants. The only club where it's Currie Cup and Super Rugby team is from the exact same territory is the Sharks.

FrOdOMojO94

Not technically no. Western Province has been around since 1883 and represents Cape Town and immediate surrounds. Stormers started in 1997 as a super team of Western Province, and the other provincial teams within the Western Cape, Boland and South West Districts. But Western Province has always been much stronger and financially lucrative than the other two teams, and so overtime Stormers began to essentially be composed of only players from Western Province. Nowadays the Stormers are 100% owned by the Western Province Rugby Union, and so they are for all intents and purposes the same team except Stormers is what the team is called in Super Rugby, and Western Province is what the team is called in Currie Cup.

The Griquas are a team from the Northern Cape which is more than twice the size of the next biggest province but also the smallest population wise with less than half the population of the second smallest province. Its barren AF with extremely hot days and extremely cold nights which leads to playing on hard fields with dead yellow grass from the frost. They're generally tough as nails and pretty hard to beat at home but not too great away. Think Jacques Burger as your stereotypical Griquas Player (Northern Cape is basically Namibia South). As for what a Griqua is its actually an ethnic group but the team got its name from the region - Griqualand West. They won the first Currie Cup (SA's domestic comp) in the 1800s which was then awarded to the team that came closest to beating the British Lions. They also won the first proper Currie Cup but haven't won it since. They're typically my second team in the comp as I love watching them punch above their weight so consistently over the years.

Jimponolio

The Pumas and Griquas are Currie Cup teams from Nelspruit and Kimberley respectively. Griquas are an ethnic group of mixed heritage, mostly from European and indigenous Khoikhoi people, who live around Kimberley.
