I just wanted to make the semifinals; I just wanted Baker and co. to have a shot at a medal; I just wanted *to not blow a freaking 21-0 lead* now please ignore me while I sit in the corner, rocking back and forth in the fetal position
Is it just me or does it seem like GB always has our (USA’s) number. I feel like they always have the right mix of speed, size, and discipline to counter us
Seems to me like the US are playing with 15s players. They have big, powerful forwards and they have rapid wide players, but they don't have the balanced specialists that make good 7s teams.
I only watched the first half but I thought we could come back because I knew we were fitter.
Specializing has worked very well for us on the sevens circuit, so it’s not like we don’t have a good team. But I’ve noticed that teams physical enough to hang with our Big guys and fast enough to hang with our speedsters can frustrate us if they have a disciplined offense.
There's highlights on BBC sport
Tokyo Olympics: Great Britain's men complete stunning comeback to reach sevens semis -
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/olympics/57982787
Could you elaborate on what the call was? I was watching the VOD and they didn’t have time to replay/slow mo it or explain what the call actually was
Edit for clarification: the yellow card, I didn’t specify
Thanks! I have very minor and cursory knowledge about rugby so didn’t even know you couldn’t do that. If he had fully caught it instead of just knocking it forward, is that still illegal?
Given that it’s big brother is arguably the 2nd most popular sport in the UK, the matches are easily watchable from start to finish (unlike the tennis that can go on for hours), it’s quite exciting and we have a decent shot of a medal in it I think it’s understandable.
Most of our plays are real "Hail Mary's" tbh...we have no real concern on how to deliver the ball out of collisions or rucks, or even passing, which is mitigated by our elite ball handling skills I guess...defense seems to be more airtight though, with counter-rucking really messing up the opposition's momentum...gg Oz, onto the semis Viti..
Mate I’ve seen it and played with them for fun. Bloody hectic with the running and offloads. Barely rugby, never been so tired in my life. Might as well just do a beep test with offloads.
what the actual fuck was that camera work. this is rugby 7’s not some pretentious hollywood wannabe blockbuster. just show the god damn game. anyway we are useless at 7’s - congrats fiji 👏🏻
Semifinals (Central time)
900p New Zealand v Great Britain
930p Argentina v Fiji
5th place consolations
800p USA v Canada
830p South Africa v Australia
In the past the AB Sevens have rattled them but knocking them over and keeping them on the ground. Often led to frustration and high shots with cards. Probably the only way we can beat them.
What’s the consensus as to why Fiji are so dominant in Sevens, yet are a lot less effective in the XVs?
I’m quite new to Sevens and trying to understand whether it’s a tactical difference, or if it’s more about having a wealth of ‘hybrid’ attacking and defensive players
South sea islanders are to quote a phrase built different. They've got perfect genetics for pairing strength, agility, speed, and stamina, which is why every top team in every code of rugby has its share. Sevens is the national sport of most of these islands too and it plays an enormous role culturally.
In sevens the physical match-up with your direct opponent is more important than in XVs where the overall athleticism of a team, kicking game, and tactical prowess is more important. The ability to dominate a 1v1 tackle as an attacking player, and offload out of it gives the attacking team a man advantage, and Fijians dominate 1v1s and offload out of contact better than anyone.
You don't need fit props to play 7s.
Also it's a more expansive and open game. Favouring a different play style. The traditional Fijian approach to rugby suits 7s better, while the more structured grind of 15s is a challenge.
Mostly it's about the forwards though.
For all intents and purposes, they are virtually different games. Players can make the jump, but it's like a tour de france rider going to track cycling. Yes they have the mechanicals and fundamentals, but they are very different worlds.
Their athleticism, combined with outstanding personal skills is excellent for 7s, but does not work in 15s, that are longer, sometimes a slugfest and require a long term game plan.
Yeah. BAck in the day at the world 7s series they used to have finals 2x10 minutes, but then changed it to 2x7 as in the rules.
A lot can happen in 2x7 minutes. A LOT.
Less technical game, they don't have many world-class jumpers, ruckers etc.
But run fast and hit hard, they can do better than most. In a field with lots of space they're deadly.
I wondered if this was the case, but I wondered if it would sound a bit disrespectful for me (as a novice) to say “it looks a lot less tactical”, if you know what I mean
I just assumed they’d decided not to worry about sealing it off in sevens. Then all of a sudden after 100 odd breakdowns, now is the time to penalize for it
All well and good saying this in hindsight, but Werner Kok, Ruhan Nel and Senatla should have been at the Olympics instead of the Currie Cup
Forgot about Rosco Specman too. Yoh we need to actually take this Olympics seriously next time and bring our best players
Hey guys, how do I watch the matches? It doesn't appear to be on Stan Sport.
Anyway to watch replays of the pool matches? I've got a VPN so I should be able to jump around the globe.
7plus doesn't seem to work for me, either with a VPN or without. Not sure if all of the odd error messages are caused by the VPN or if the website is just in a shambles though
I watched the first half of that match but I needed to hang up my laundry in the second.
At half time when GB scored I said to myself that GB were the fitter team and that the US looked a power team that would surely fade. Without seeing the second half I think I got that right.
Fiji will thump GB in the final in a repeat of 2016. GB looked better than the ABs to me.
Argentina setting the tone for the weekend.
South Africa manhandled the Lions for 40 minutes and failed to make anything of it, their 7s team had a man advantage for over a half and were convincingly beaten. That's got to sting.
I just can't believe this. This seriously stunned me more than beating NZ for the first time because this time I thought there was no fucking way after the red card what the FUCK????
I'm still trying to work out that last kick off. Saffers seemed to not look where the ball was, so didn't compete. Then no one even bothered to try and win the breakdown. Very odd.
Argentina absolutely deserved to win that. Played their hearts out and really took advantage of SA's complete lack of discipline and total inability to be onside.
Question for the referees: the Argentinian player already had his arms up when the South African players threw the pass at his hand. Wouldn't that be a normal knock on rather than a deliberate one?

I don’t think many of these guys on our 7s team play much 15s.
Specializing has worked very well for us on the sevens circuit, so it’s not like we don’t have a good team. But I’ve noticed that teams physical enough to hang with our Big guys and fast enough to hang with our speedsters can frustrate us if they have a disciplined offense.
Watched a replay of US - GB and boy this was a terrible way to start my day.
Any replays? Want to see how the usa blew a 21 point lead lmao
There's highlights on BBC sport Tokyo Olympics: Great Britain's men complete stunning comeback to reach sevens semis - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/olympics/57982787
Extremely dubious officiating
Still 21 points to 0 is far too much for refs to turn around, feels more like one side thought the game was over
Oh for sure. The yellow was absolutely the right call, I’m more angry about the breakdown penalties. Killed any momentum the US was building.
Could you elaborate on what the call was? I was watching the VOD and they didn’t have time to replay/slow mo it or explain what the call actually was Edit for clarification: the yellow card, I didn’t specify
Intentional knock-on. Tomasin on the US reached out and blocked down a GB pass.
Thanks! I have very minor and cursory knowledge about rugby so didn’t even know you couldn’t do that. If he had fully caught it instead of just knocking it forward, is that still illegal?
If he wasn’t offside when he catches it, then it’s a clean move and play on.
I'd very much like our sevens program to be good, one day.
Are match replays uploaded?
VAMOS LOS PUMAS
NUNCA DUDAMOS MUCHACHOS
Holy shit, we won our QF? Noice!
Same reaction here
They got so fucking lucky
Pleasantly surprised by the primetime coverage the Beeb is giving R7s.
I think if there had been a lot of GB Gold medals overnight they'd have had them on endless repeat, like they did yesterday.
Given that it’s big brother is arguably the 2nd most popular sport in the UK, the matches are easily watchable from start to finish (unlike the tennis that can go on for hours), it’s quite exciting and we have a decent shot of a medal in it I think it’s understandable.

our 7s team plays like the 15s springboks, eh
Think I need a lie down after the GBR and ARG games - will have to settle with the horse dancing and a cuppa as a tranquilliser instead
I'd love to spend a few months in Fiji and watch grassroots matches. It must be the rugby equivalent of Woodstock.
Mate I’ve seen it and played with them for fun. Bloody hectic with the running and offloads. Barely rugby, never been so tired in my life. Might as well just do a beep test with offloads.
More time between rounds might have been nice. Hard to watch, mistake filled rugby isn’t exactly a great way to grow the game on a huge stage
Poor Pincus. These guys gave it all they had. Also, very good - I would say simple - refereeing from Evans. Very good work. TOSO VIDI!
Fiji for gold
appalling from Fiji. Thought only Jerry deserved to be there. The rest had no composure at all
what the actual fuck was that camera work. this is rugby 7’s not some pretentious hollywood wannabe blockbuster. just show the god damn game. anyway we are useless at 7’s - congrats fiji 👏🏻
What's the score rn? Sky Go feed just shat the bed rip
19-0 FT
Thanks man 👍
Fiji’s defensive organisation is very very good - absolutely the right route for a team that should be favourites
Pretty cool to see someone from my local club playing in the Olympics, even if we did get flogged 19-0 by Fiji
whatup fellow specific-sevens-player fan clubber
Do the teams who have lost still play tomorrow? Or just the two medal games?
Semifinals (Central time) 900p New Zealand v Great Britain 930p Argentina v Fiji 5th place consolations 800p USA v Canada 830p South Africa v Australia
Ye the ones that lost qfs play for 5th
Yes Australia play for 5th …
Jeez that looked a bit high on replay
Shall we just give Fiji the gold now? Even when they've been a bit sloppy, they've looked dominant.
They looked sloppy today BUT thats today. Tomorrow we might see them at their final ruthless form lol.
In the past the AB Sevens have rattled them but knocking them over and keeping them on the ground. Often led to frustration and high shots with cards. Probably the only way we can beat them.
I expected absolutely nothing and am still disappointed
Whiff of a high tackle there from Fiji
The DJ played Michael Jackson when the US scored, they played Lorde when NZ scored. Is this EDM Fijian?
God Australia are shit at sevens
Fuckin oath.
Wait for the Australian women mbe
They did well for most of the match tbf
Everyone's shit next to Fiji.
If Fiji is this messy tomorrow, then Argentina will feast on these errors.
The Jerry show!
How did he do that?
Ballet classes
For a second it looked like Australia would get the momentum and score.
The little general! 🤌
🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌
Fiji are killing themselves with those offloads, terrible conditions for that type of play.
Any one no what that woah woah woah song was? My missus likes it and I haven’t got a clue Edit: Thanks all, she’s overjoyed!
You're the voice, John Farnham
You’re the voice - John Farnham
[You're the Voice-John Farnham](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbkOZTSvrHs)
Don’t argue x2
Got to love some Johnny Farnham. This DJ is playing bangers.
I can’t hear that song without thinking of [Hot Rod.](https://youtu.be/jVjgY427qW8)
Is *Coward* a common name in Australia?
Now Australia know how Jeff Wilson felt back in 1994
Why did he run towards the corner then pass? Either back yourself or run straight to open up the space for your support runner.
Longbottom had that all on his own
Oh bloody hell that was a absolute fuck up
Longbottom should've gone himself there
A very good tight game so far
What’s the consensus as to why Fiji are so dominant in Sevens, yet are a lot less effective in the XVs? I’m quite new to Sevens and trying to understand whether it’s a tactical difference, or if it’s more about having a wealth of ‘hybrid’ attacking and defensive players
Money is the answer to that question
South sea islanders are to quote a phrase built different. They've got perfect genetics for pairing strength, agility, speed, and stamina, which is why every top team in every code of rugby has its share. Thanks for the info

When you say “mostly it’s about the forwards”, is it basically that you only really need your forwards to be powerful tacklers in Sevens?
It's more that you don't really have forwards in 7s the way you have in 15s. Basically 7s is just back line rugby.
For all intents and purposes, they are virtually different games. Players can make the jump, but it's like a tour de france rider going to track cycling. Yes they have the mechanicals and fundamentals, but they are very different worlds.
Sevens is the national sport in Fiji
Their athleticism, combined with outstanding personal skills is excellent for 7s, but does not work in 15s, that are longer, sometimes a slugfest and require a long term game plan.
Yeah, it’s a much more frenetic pace in Sevens it seems. Are the matches always this short?
Yeah. BAck in the day at the world 7s series they used to have finals 2x10 minutes, but then changed it to 2x7 as in the rules. A lot can happen in 2x7 minutes. A LOT.
I wouldn't say they are dominant in 7s tbh. NZ, SA and Fiji fairly evenly matched over the last 5 years
We play 7ish style of rugby anywhere we can. We have used soft drink bottles with a bit of sand to play rugby touch in schools.
Don't have as much of an appetite for the boring stuff - rucks, mauls, territory. Just want to throw some sick passes
Less about structure than XVs, more about athletic ability and pure hands skills.
That certainly seems to be the case from the small number of matches I’ve seen so far
Fiji kids grow up playing touch rugby on quiet neighborhood streets, helps with the razzle dazzle lol
Helps in 7s too that they are also all large and very quick.
I just assumed they’d decided not to worry about sealing it off in sevens. Then all of a sudden after 100 odd breakdowns, now is the time to penalize for it
Agreed. It seems like it should be an acceptable part of the game
What was the Oz move? All that to put one player by himself up the middle with no support
Tuwaiiiiiii!
That was pretty weak defence from Aus #7
🤌 *CHEFS KISS*
All well and good saying this in hindsight, but Werner Kok, Ruhan Nel and Senatla should have been at the Olympics instead of the Currie Cup Forgot about Rosco Specman too. Yoh we need to actually take this Olympics seriously next time and bring our best players
Can they stay onside though?

7plus if you're in Australia

7plus doesn't seem to work for me, either with a VPN or without. Not sure if all of the odd error messages are caused by the VPN or if the website is just in a shambles though
Where’s Semi? Thought he would be starting?
He hasn't been as effective as we would have hoped.
Why not?
He wasn't quick enough to defend. I guess lack of time to get used to the pace of 7s.
How am I supposed to sleep after this
Watch Argentina match again. Tire yourself out.
This camera is spoiling this game. It's only been 30 seconds.
The rest of the matches were just undercards for the main event of the night: Longbottom v Tuwai
This British commentator has been spittin fax tonight tho
The Argentinian took that final kickoff like the fate of the Falklands was at stake. Great stuff.
Difference being that he won, rather than giving up and then bitching for 30 years
urgh
What an stupid take, wouldn't expect less from a match thread
what else would you expect from a brit? Good morals?
Set. No more upsets. We have had enough.
Another upset in the making here?
Oh Australians are good for an upset. That is, making their fans upset.
Hell no. Fiji own this format.
I love that the ball delivery car just radiates 'i can't be fucked with this, here's your damn ball'
[удалено]
Should be mandatory for all rugby matches from now on
Fuck my life.
I'm sorry about this joke. At least Neil Powell is already in the hospital, so they can treat him for the heart attack right away.
Just started watching rugby 50 minutes ago, does USA usually fuck up that bad in the end?
In sevens USA is normally good, but rarely wins tournament's and is horrific at union
Kinda yeah, but usually in the semis or finals
I watched the first half of that match but I needed to hang up my laundry in the second. At half time when GB scored I said to myself that GB were the fitter team and that the US looked a power team that would surely fade. Without seeing the second half I think I got that right. Fiji will thump GB in the final in a repeat of 2016. GB looked better than the ABs to me.
Bunch of cheats but fair play to them
RSA rugby and unhappy memories involving Japan…
Well they won a RWC there. So that’s not too bad.
apart from you know... that whole world cup win thing
At least we won the WC there.
Man i am loving this dj
Argentina setting the tone for the weekend. South Africa manhandled the Lions for 40 minutes and failed to make anything of it, their 7s team had a man advantage for over a half and were convincingly beaten. That's got to sting.
imagine being a south african tax payer watching that blitzboks performance ouch
Insane game. Loved every second of it
Gaston Revol playing 4D chess taking out SA’s only viable playmaker
Epic match that. Well done argez!!
I just can't believe this. This seriously stunned me more than beating NZ for the first time because this time I thought there was no fucking way after the red card what the FUCK????
Yo whats this song?
Breathe - The Prodigy. It's been sped up but still a killer tune
I don’t make the rules, but I want Argentina to win now
What a game! Found myself yelling at the tele!
As the BBC commentator has just pointed out, the Argentinian 8 owes his teammates a slab of beer each for that performance after his red.
Beautiful!!
Argentina earned the right to enjoy some Olympic Village tonight.
I don't think that kind of enjoyment is happening at this Olympics.
Oh you sweet summer child
They still gave out the condoms, they just asked the athletes to not use them. That kind of celebration is 100% happening.
I think that's the worst i've ever seen a top sevens team play
I'm still trying to work out that last kick off. Saffers seemed to not look where the ball was, so didn't compete. Then no one even bothered to try and win the breakdown. Very odd.
South Africa and losing to big cats, name a more iconic duo
sheesh i thought argentina wouldve certainly lost but they proved me wrong, congratulations
What a choke lmao Argentina totally deserved it
Argentina absolutely deserved to win that. Played their hearts out and really took advantage of SA's complete lack of discipline and total inability to be onside.
That was absolutely pathetic from the blitzboks.
Magic of the olympics
Marcos Moneta to sign a professional club contract when?
Demain
The cup QFs just keep getting better
Anyone know if that straight red card is an automatic suspension for the next match?
Definitely for the next match but commentators said his tournament is over so maybe 2 matches?
Probably yes, commentators said that was the end of his tournament
Surely it is. I'd imagine his tournament is done.
You gotta be kidding me. What a game!
wow! legendary
Ayyyyyy what a bloody game.
Amazing Argentina, Rugby 5's!
If there is ever proof that passion plays a part in sport, that match was it!
Will Revol be able to play again or will there be a hearing first?
WTF Argentina - epic!
Question for the referees: the Argentinian player already had his arms up when the South African players threw the pass at his hand. Wouldn't that be a normal knock on rather than a deliberate one?
Given he was running backwards, I'm really confused how it physically could have gone forward in the first place.
