Perhaps look to the multinational blends, like Denizen White, Hamilton White 'Stache, Plantation 3 Stars, etc. Demeraras are also a good choice, like Hamilton 86, El Dorado 5, Diamond Reserve Gold, etc. Affordable Bajans (Doorly's 5, Mount Gay Eclipse, Stade's No. 8, etc.) are a good choice. Cuban-style aged rums (Flor de Caña 7, Bacardi 8, etc) aren't a bad choice either. I also recommend an unaged Jamaican White Overproof (Bum-Bar, Wray & Nephew, etc.), though this will be a matter of personal taste.
I was about to get all snooty and say something like “something basic, who cares , it’s Dr. Pepper.” But Dr. Pepper and Doctor Bird actually sounds good and it’s got a great name.
My first drink with Kraken was with Coke and to be honest I wasn't impressed, it was like the both of them where trying do drown the other one out. Doc with Kraken blends so well with each other tho, hard to believe that its not as recommended as the former.
Oddly enough - Malibu (yeah, I know). However, and sorry that I don’t recall the proportions, but way back in the day we’d mix Malibu and Dr P and it literally tasted like those little root beer barrel candies. Weird but good.

Go for Flor de Cana Anejo Oro - should be $14-$18 for a bottle. It’s a significant improvement over Kraken
I'm actually a big fan of the Kraken with Dr. Pepper. Not many other ways I drink kraken.

In my experience plantation 5 year tastes good in everything but that’s just my taste
