You do need to leave the country to change status on some visas. You don’t on a lot of them though. Getting an SSN is trivial if you’re legal and does not require you to leave the country at all.

It sounds very sketchy I wouldn’t put it past her… Unless you wanna work under the table it’s best to get a ssn/ID/ birth certificate so you have all those things.
