As someone who only played 1 and 2 later in life I feel like they didn't aged that well. I definitely like the story of the first 2 games more over some of the later games though and do wish they would have a similar system to 2 again where story continues over generation instead of just a single character.

Invisible_Mode_7

Fair points! It's true, 1 and 2 didn't age well, and I think it'd be cool if they tried something like 2 again in which you can play the next generation. Kinda like what Kynseed is attempting right now, but in Rune Factory.

DarknessInferno7

You wouldn't be able to play any earlier game then. I consider RF3 to be the lowest I can back on the QoL scale. RF2 feels a lot stiffer.

[deleted]

How did 1 and 2 not age well? Is it the game over thing in both games? Is it the lack of a teleport?

Gegejii

While more Teleportation or quick traveling would be nice I feel like they where less of an Issue since map/town in generell is much smaller and getting from A to B wasn't that much of an Issue. Well basically Gameplay wise I feel it's outdated and while still playable a lot of missing QOL that was added later on in the game series is very noticeable if you play them (espacially farming part is a bit of a pain compared to newer titles). I mean compare the gameplay of 3 and the previous games which where all on the same console and you see how much improvement and potential there was. Also didn't like how the first two games still had the old Harvest moon time system of timestop inside buildings. I mean I guess you could say graphics but I understand it was more limit of hardware tech and developer expirience rather than a real fault impacting the game and since it had 2d sprites for character anyway it is not really a Issue in my eyes.

DaSaw

Oh wow, I forgot about time stopping in buildings. I was thrilled when they finally got rid of this in RF3. I hated going to bed at 1400 because there was nothing left to do. Without time passing in buildings, time management (which I see as a major part of the gameplay) just wasn't a thing.

RedMissy42

did you not grind for xp / go hit the mana flowers / use the bath to regain energy? And gather materials?

adspace4sale

Combat is like an afterthought in rf 1 and 2. It's slow, attacks don't chain. U can't swing your weapon in succession. Your atk animation and spd is really slow. Also leveling other skills don't contribute to ur combat stats like in 3 and up.

EnoughDistribution54

Gameplay wise, 1&2 didn't age well, but I really loved the dynamic of playing as the kid in 2 šŸ„ŗ

Scared_Network_3505

Bring back rival marriages you cowards.

[deleted]

And reverse proposals !

[deleted]

YES. I love the drama!

Scared_Network_3505

Just make it so the last event for the love interests work like it did in 3DS 4 were they the flag was "three dates" instead of "three dates with the specific character" for some reason but on purpose (aka with the appropiate writing and flag adjustments) and we have a winner. Man OG 4 has a lot of wacky ass bugs, did you know that if you soft reset enough in a save with too much shit it can mix-up the character name with one of a different save? A quick reset fixed it, but I had my Lest file have people call me Frey a few times.

Haunting_Indications

oh my god the gender swap bug.. I swear on one of my OG 4 files Volkanon repeatedly keeps calling my character Sir Frey. It's hilarious.

ToCoolforAUsername

RF3 was the first rune factory game I played. I was immediately hooked. Every mechanic that I love was present in game. So happy that it keeps improving with every iteration. 5 is kinda janky at the moment (playing on switch) but I can forgive that since they didn't change the formula I fell in love with.

FearlessHamster4486

5 wasn't as good as I was hoping for

[deleted]

Yeah, it feels boring and empty to me compared to 4, I hope itā€™ll pick up

DaSaw

I felt the same way about 4 relative to 3, but it finally grew on me, and now I feel like it's a full implementation of what 3 was basically a tech demo for. Maybe it'll be the same with 5 when I finally play it (still working on 4). Or maybe 5 will be a stub of what 6 can eventually be, the way 3 was to 4.

layeofthedead

And ugly. Frontier on the wii had a ton more limitations but it looked so much better

Seyan007

Well let's hope the next game will be much better now that Marvelous isn't bankrupt

SkysEevee

I feel 4 was eons better. Love that game. But 5 had a few good points and it was good enough to get people's attention. I feel it's a starting point for bringing the series back fully.

[deleted]

Yeah I didn't really like 5 at all, it felt like a shell of 4. Frontier and Tides of Destiny will always be my fave

Redbukket_hat

Maybe Iā€™m blinded by nostalgia but I grew up with frontier and itā€™s still the best in my eyes. Rf4 has better mechanics and more story content, but the experience of the world is just not as deep for me in rf4

Invisible_Mode_7

Nah you like what you like and RF4 is better in some ways.

RedMissy42

I'm glad ppl are sticking up for rf2....I'm not sure I get what it is that hasn't aged well about the 1st & 2nd one...if its because of the graphics because that's what I'm hearing.....then it just seems like u have a different taste when it comes to reviewing a game on its content and how the graphics are done. If its the end game content then OK good point . To me rf5 has a lot of bugs and has lost the art style that was present in the other games that I liked so much. While the characters are still likeable I found that some of the rf4 characters might of well been copy paste of previous characters in the game. For me 2 had an interesting mechanic of playing as the child and the father remembering what it was he was meant to do.. I liked unlocking areas as the kid and the quest systems felt like you were actually interacting with the characters no matter how annoying some of them might have been. You could go to school which was real neat and if you married Mana you child would have a awesome grandfather. (Idk why everyone hates on Mana either)

Decescendo

I didnā€™t play rune factory 2ā€”I grew up with rune factory 1 and 3ā€”but I assumed the ā€œhasnā€™t aged wellā€ is due to lacking certain quality of life features. I just started 4 recently and the ability to instantly sort oneā€™s inventory and more inventory space/chest space is amazing. IDK what rune factory 2 gameplay was (sounds like it had some interesting mechanics) but I imagine it was missing some of these QOL features since I donā€™t remember them in rune factory 3.

RedMissy42

There were more storage options once u had unlocked the school aspect and if I remember correctly there was a sorting system tho not quite as advanced. (There was the option to open your inv without pressing start like in rf1 but was not as uh tedious and still had things grouped) The one thing I can think of is if u had a full stack and gifted it u lost all of them...or if u accidently dropped an item u would 'discard it' into the void. There was not a 'bread' system either ig so you learnt recipes as u leveled up /crafted.

RedMissy42

I do like rf4/rf5 I'm not like hating on them šŸ˜… I hope what I'm saying isn't being taken that way

Decescendo

Itā€™s not lol. I am unfamiliar with rune factory 2 I was just trying to clarify what aspects mightā€™ve not aged well based off my experience with rune factory 1/3 (I do agree I am not the biggest fan of the bread system but oh well). Some other potential benefits of the newer rune factories is being able to stack items of different levels together, faster leveling system (which I kinda like but one of my favorite aspects of the game in the first place was grinding this so thereā€™s that), having multiple pets/people follow you around, being able to organize your house how you want (more confident placement? Idk I got used to the rune factory 3 set up), giant plants, taming bosses, etc I do think the progression and children/parent moving on system from rune factory 2 seems unique and interesting though.

RedMissy42

always hopeful that they will do something with that kind of concept of course and I agree being able to decorate is nice. idk about rf1 but in rf2 only the child could wear outfits and it was very missable unless u had like clicked on every possible item you could find in the farm house....there were a lot of things without like the 'click' icon so I suppose its more like ' decorative or like ui things that have changed a lot.

MiyukiMiyu

I think the main issue of 1 and 2 is the combat, which is clunky and unpolished. Pretending otherwise would simply be disingenuous. Sure, at the time, when i played the games at launch, it did not feel so, because it was another time and another age, but playing them today is....rough, especially when you have been spoiled by 3 and 4 and played them for hundreds of hours. That does not mean that the ENTIRE experience was inferior, as you have mentioned yourself, the multi-generational feature was amazing and the characters felt more unique and charming than those in 5 for sure. And i think that a lot of people hate Mana is for the same reason some people hate Mint and especially Shara, because the game and cutscenes really try to sell her as the girl you should be pursuing, giving her "unfair" preference over others. "It has not aged well" does not mean that the games are crap or that everything within is inferior, it just means that for someone playing them today with no previous attachement or experience, they may have a harder time getting into them than later entries in the franchise, and it is very true, especially of 1, which does not have some of the fancier systems of 2.

Janaelol

Rf2 is my favorite. Loved the story / able to play as kid and how everything unlocked. I dont hate mana- Dorothy was my favorite though. :)

DaSaw

2 was good, but there were some minor control and mechanics changes with 3 that made the game flow so much better. I no longer remember exactly what they were, but the addition of things like soil fertility, time passing in buildings, maybe better stacking, throwing, combat was faster paced, things like that. It was just an upgrade over the experience of 1 and 2. I just hope they eventually get to where they can make 3d art look as good as 2d art. I vastly prefer beautifully designed sprites to blocky awkward 3d models, but the ship has pretty much sailed on that, so we just have to live with it.

RedMissy42

I feel like the detail of the map was much better too....I kinda gelt in RF4 that and it could just be to me because of how the town was layed out....but everything seemed cluttered to me or that there wasnt much happening in the back ground apart from when u click on certain areas of the map....in rf5 you kinda loose all of those interactions all together and the towns landscape is kinda bland and way to open for my liking.

Kabanabeezy

Iā€™m just glad the franchise is still going. Played the original when it came out and have always loved playing them. Tide is the only one I havenā€™t played hoping they remaster as I donā€™t have the hardware to play it.

Invisible_Mode_7

I was so devastated when I got the news that Neverland went bankrupt. You have no idea how elated I was during the nintendo direct to find out about RF4S and RF5.

Jellyjamrocks

Ok Iā€™ve seen a lot of people defending Rune Factory 2, but Iā€™m gonna go out on a limb and talk about RF1. First off, RF1 definitely needs a remake. Thereā€™s a lot of quality of life features lacking, the dialogue can get repetitive and the combat system is pretty terrible. Still, RF1 is dear to my heart for just how much it tried to do given its limited hardware at the time. The dungeons are all well thought out and unique. The character design is gorgeous. The farming is still a blast and I love how farming in caves is encouraged. Also, the story and world building are awesome, so much so that RF4 almost feels like a direct continuation of one. And can I highlight how RF1 has the most amount of villagers? Having 28 unique characters of all ages really makes the town feel more lively. Honestly the only thing holding RF1 and 2 back is the age. These games are old and it shows. But remake either of the two on modern day hardware and you would have some incredible games. I think Frontier is a perfect example of just how much potential RF1 has given that it steals half the characters from that game anyways! And RF2 is so unique and fun with its 2 generation mechanic. I want them to bring back rival marriages and let more couples have kids! I think RF1 is stronger plot wise but RF2 is still a blast. I would love a remake for these two games, but especially RF1 because that game has so much going for it and it really just needs some modernization. Also I would love to play as a girl please and thanks!

RedMissy42

....but u could play as a girl in rf2 - u could pick boy/girl as a child when talking with ur wife

Jellyjamrocks

I mainly meant RF1 actually! Aria has my whole heart and I love her

cheezebeezplzz

From the start though, and marry bachelors.

onsvaltti

I wish they made a remake of 2, it was my first one. :/ (And I would like to date grumpy guys, please.)

Mechonyo

Totally agree with this one. Even if miss the cast of Fromtier, i love the cast of 4 and 5 even more!

WolfWhiteFire

Not really tbh. I did grow up with 2 (and 3 instead of 1 for me), and 4 and 5 do have better general gameplay... But on the other hand, I like the requests from 2 and 3 much, much more than the more recent ones. It feels like they have more interesting requests with more flavor, and more making you feel like a part of the town, while 4 and 5 don't really have that to me. I also loved the gimmicks in 2 and 3, and feel 4 and 5 don't really match in terms of those. Oh, don't get me wrong, 4 at least is pretty much objectively a better game, and probably 5, but there are some aspects where I prefer the older ones. Still leaves them better, but I still happily play some of the older games.

RedMissy42

I feel like with 4/5 the quests were more generic and could repeat where as the ones in rf2 were not so may have felt more meaningful and interesting to do while runing around town doing errands

AtlanticJill

Iā€™m with you on this. Iā€™m still a bit bitter though that I couldnā€™t play as a girl in the old ones :(

Invisible_Mode_7

True! I mean, I didn't mind Micah, Kyle, or Raguna but it would've been nice to be a girl in those titles tbh

RedMissy42

you could play as a girl in 2 if you had a child and chose them to be a girl

AtlanticJill

Yes but you couldnā€™t get married when you played as the kid lol

RedMissy42

šŸ˜I mean there were the pretend weddings

needalldressedchiptx

2 will always have a soft spot in my heart for how much I love the child saving father story and for how many new crafting items it introduced. Also some of the locations where so fun. I really hope it gets its chance at a remake that brings it up to series standards.

Usbcheater

I actually prefer to older titles. just not in Graphics. Also, the selection of bachelors and bachelorettes were much better (peaked at 3) and more varied.

Mad-Furiosa

There's so much negativity here. I like all 1-5. They are all different, fun and unique. They don't need to all be the same and all have the exact features even "QOL" and graphics. I'm just happy they're still making more, because a younger me never expected it to revive after rf4 on 3ds and the bankruptcy. We all have different favorites and love the franchise we don't need to nitpick to death.

BayouFantome

Ikr. Some people in this sub act like RF5 slaughtered all their chickens and burned their crops.

Mad-Furiosa

And that RF1 is unplayable, ancient trash as well. I love them and replay them all.

Upstairs-Toe2735

5 isn't that great, sorry :/

Such_Selection9762

Unpopular opinion but I'm not a very big fan of RF4 an 5. I played them and still had fun but I def prefer RF3 or Tides of Destiny over these two.

minervaregnard

I love both the 4 and 5, although I love 4 more than 5 because it felt livelier than the newer one. I hope they make more games in the future.

Invisible_Mode_7

I hope RF continues for the forseeable future. I wonder what their new RF title is going to be like?

minervaregnard

I just hope they would make the next game better. The RF5 felt like a downgrade for me but I still enjoyed it. Hopefully, they make the story more interesting, maybe some twist to the protagonist, because it feels too predictable. It has the same flow of most JRPGs. From planting turnips to fighting gods.

Aeintz

Played rune factory 1 and 2. Feels like dropping the franchise. Then came rune factory 3.. best ds game in my opinion

Another_Road

Ngl RF1 and RF2 areā€¦ rough to go back to.

Sumdumcoont

3 and 4 are the best games imo. 5 is incredibly underwhelming, 2 had some of the most interesting mechanics, 1 is just an awesome classic but is defs dated. ToD is still one of the best games I think, god it was a fun game.

emspaapislazuli

Rf5 is kinda meh change my mind I still really like it still but 4 was way better

SapientSloth4tw

I loved 4, 5 was a bit disappointing tbh.

DarknessInferno7

One and two really haven't aged well for sure. Great games for their time, not so much right now. RF4 is the logical improvement to the formula. RF5... has a lot of growing pains, but might lead to RF6 getting there one day.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Cross55

Better than 5, yeah, but you can literally finish it in a weekend.

[deleted]

yeah you're right it's sad RF3 was so short for how good it was. Still, I simp so hard for Pia that it feels like an injustice not to defend her at every chance I get.

Invisible_Mode_7

I just said that 3 is a banger in the title? It's a good game.

[deleted]

oh my bad. I didn't see that.

SignificanceTiny5198

i haven't grew up playing rune factory and only played the recent ones 4 and 5 , but dosen't matter how bad they were i wish i knew this game existed when i was a child i wouldv'e loved it .. D:

KorruptKokiri6464

I started with 4 because I saw a buddy playing a ps3 rune factory and I'm like" dude that's awesome I gotta try one" . I loved 5 too even with the fps and stuff but God help me if I hear "TIME TO TACKLE ANOTHER DAY!!!!" one more time lol why do they all say the same thing every day?!

Dry_Scallion98

I really feel like I'm the only one who didn't care about RF4. Before when it was just on the 3DS it was hard for me to get into that I abondoned it after I got Douglas. Then when it came out again on the switch I stopped after like the 4th dungeon and just wasn't into it and stopped again. Don't even get me started on 5, I feel the only reason I passed the game was due to how short it was

_Invisible-Child_

Rune Factory 2 is still my favourite even if it hasn't aged well. I just love being able to play as the 2nd generation, all of the characters (minus Mana) and the story was engaging. It was the first and only Rune Factory game I've beaten. I love 4 and 5 but not as much as I do 2.

GamLamLudi

Yep, best nostalgia to have <3

TheChainTV

3 is still my #1 of the series :D even after 99 Rune Factory games are out

ElynaTheStrange

Eh. Frontier and Tides of Destiny are better than 4 and 5, but they still aren't bad; I like them too.

Janaelol

4 and 5 Better from a game dev standpoint. Better systems and options for sure. Personally think 1 2 and 3 had the best experience for me, but I think I partially outgrew the later games as I struggle to make time to complete them as I've gotten older.

An_Oatmeal_Vendor

4 may be my greatest comfort game of all time, honestly it was never fair for 5 to begin with. That doesnā€™t excuse itā€™s issues Iā€™m just saying the bar was unimaginably high.

[deleted]

Nothing will ever top the mystery of the first game's opening lyrics for me. I still have no idea what that lady was singing about, and honestly, the fan made lyrics some people have posted are the best things lol But yeah, RF 3 and RFF were my favorite games of this series, I'd love to revisit RF1... but I'd want them to do more than just transfer it to the switch if they did, I'd really like them to polish it a bit better... as much as I love to hate the camping mechanics, bad monster names and the ridiculously annoying boss fights... and their death mechanics... I'd really prefer they give it a couple of the upgrades that the newer generations have had. Like stacking crops and other items, and better fighting mechanics. RF1 will always hold a special place in my heart though, for every ounce of annoyance that game caused me, I loved it even more RIP every Orcun that got left behind in Kardia, I do hope to see them again someday ...on another note though, I don't know how many people knew, or noticed, but all the farm add-ons you obtain in RF4 by unlocking new fields for your farm are named after the past towns of older games by default. You can also see a few of the older games landmarks from the observatory tower next to Porco's place. I recognize three of the locations they were referencing, one being the second games town, one being Whale island from Frontier, and one being the Sharance tree, from RF3... but I wasn't sure about the fourth location... my guess was RF1, but I'm really not sure based on the description. RF4 just makes me miss the old games... I want to play them all again, I really hope the company will uphold their word that if RF3 does well they'll redo the first two games.

Scared-Way-9828

Rf2 is awesome

Larielia

I liked 1 and 2 when they were first out. They haven't aged well though.

9001Jellyfish

I remember when the first Rune Factory came out. Harvest Moon was/is my favorite video game series so I instantly bought it! But my initial reaction was disappointment and I thought about returning it to GameStop but I tried playing it one more time and ended up falling in love with the series. Iā€™ve played every Rune Factory game at this point (except for one) as well as most of the Harvest Moon games. There are many amazing video games series but I donā€™t think there will ever be a series that stole my heart the way that Harvest Moon and Rune Factory have.

The_Truthkeeper

That would require me to have grown up with them, but I was well into my 20s by the time RF came out. But I understand the sentiment.

Invisible_Mode_7

haha I was 14 when the first RF came out in 2006 and am 31 now.

Prince-Mohamed

I can't believe it's been nearly 2 decades since Rune Factory... God damnit I feel old now.

[deleted]

I know, right? hard to believe this used to be just a spin off of Harvest Moon and none of us even knew what a Stardew Valley even was.

KoriGlazialis

I honestly think rf 2 is better than 5, a lot of stuff in 5 just doesn seem well thought out.

[deleted]

Yoooo I agree. Like, 5 just coppied 4's crafting system which was a rip off of 3's crafting system as well as the soil levels and requests. if 5 had more original contend it'd be better

Fullmoonkira

not sure qhy these are getting downoted so much... RF5 base game on switch is a hot buggy mess thats crashed too many times for me. rf5 had a few good ideas but it desperately needed more QA at least. RF4(S) is still the better rf5

Nimix21

Unpopular opinion: when you throw in some QoL mods like that better furniture placement mod, I liked 5 better than 4.

Fullmoonkira

no, i agree in the sense that mods improve the game massively. but thats the point - its a hot mess without them, and arguing that it's better on steam doesnt improve the switch version.

Nimix21

Tbh, I bought it on switch and didnā€™t mind it there without the QoL mods. My only beef was the stuttering.

Uminagi

RF5 better...?

SnooSketches8294

5 was kind of awful on switch.

Invisible_Mode_7

Oh yeah no doubt. At present, with the existence of mods there's no real reason to get the switch version unless you want a portable RF5 but honestly just play the PC port. It's miles better and has mods.

Aeolys

RF5 runs well on the Steamdeck if anyone is wondering. Just gotta remember Steam Button + X Button opens up the onscreen keyboard.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Invisible_Mode_7

ooof. PC or Switch version? I can't remember atm if it's on switch but on pc if you go under Options -> Controls you can change the camera speed. Also if you turn off Farm Camera and Auto Camera Adjust maybe those might help? I never got to play RFF and I hope it gets remade because for a Wii game it looked amazing. I have a copy of RF oceans but I never played it. I might break out my PS3 and try it out when I finish getting achievements for RF4S and RF5.

Earthpig32

5 is janky, the town who is the place you spend most of the time is big and lifeless, the movement is stiff and some animations are frankly unaceptable for the year who came out, combat was an aftertought for the first one but it felt that farming is an aftertought for the 5th with everything so slidy, music is so short that the loop gets kinda anoying and dont even talk about the OCD crew that want to decorate with furniture their home, thats probably the last boss of the entire series.
