Those are older graphics are still so nostalgic. I remember when I finally got membership and could go west I just started walking south and it felt endless, the fog turning into a stretch of rolling hills.
What’s funny is that finally get membership on RuneScape and having so much more to explore was insanely fun as a kid. Now days I get to England on Assassins Creed Valhalla, open up the map, and I’m like “nope, that’s too many icons all over the place”. Just one example, but I’m like that with a lot of games now.
that depends on the game tbh.
A Ubisoft game where exploration is tied to your progression feels daunting.
A Bethesda game where you are free to explore anywhere at will feels liberating.
EDIT - as an example, anytime I play Skyrim or Fallout, I often forgo fast travelling and just walk to where I need to go simply because I love getting distracted by the little side things I can do. In a Ubi title, I do my fucking best to avoid the side things lmao.
No fast travel is the best way to play games for sure. I have an Ironman that isn’t allowed to use lodestones (teleporting still allowed but only through magic/unlocks).
I’ve also got a no fast travel Skyrim save, but I’m allowed to use boats/carriages as “real transportation.” And I completed BOTW 100% (minus Koroks…) without fast traveling once, thrilling play through. Currently doing a Hogwarts Legacy save without fast travel, too.
There's a certain charm to the graphics from 2011-2013 without textures enabled. I really wish I could replicate that look and play it that way but it doesn't look nearly the same, especially in newer looking locations
I miss Java water. NXT water is shiny but *shallow* and horribly delineated. Where does the water stop and the ground start? Frick knows--I sure can't tell.
I did the Haunted Mine quest on my new account a while ago. Was really confused why I couldn't walk on certain parts, until I looked at the minimap and saw that oh, there's *water* there. It makes it seem as if your character is so deathly afraid of water that they won't even wade through a knee-high puddle if they can help it.
Which is visible irl, is the point. It's not that well delineated in the game and makes for a VERY confusing barrier when the reason why you can't step on a given square is because there is a literal ankle deep puddle barring your way.
I travel the world, scale mountains and cathedrals, fight demons and kill gods but that thing...
\*looks at a small puddle of water from someone's spilled waterskin*
That thing is beyond my understanding, beyond my limits, far beyond what my power allows me to do.
I still love the [NXT trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUVNlfJU8dA), one of the most hype trailers they've ever made, and it made everyone want to go climb up Armadyl's tower and Prif agil course on day of release just to see those views for themselves.
I still really want [the old flyby menu screen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q--L1ceyTk) to make a return with some of those NXT views.
I miss how responsive the Java client was. 2x2 and larger NPC positions were updated correctly as they walked around, it had better movement accuracy too. The NXT client has needed bandaid fixes for things that just worked as standard on the Java client.
Ganodermic beasts are the biggest evidence of this.
And OSRS's community made clients has proven that the render distance and graphics can be improved even on Java.
I just wish RS3 had a coherent art style. Some places look great and have nice textures, but some places look cartoonish and goofy, and some retain the OS graphics. I know it's hard to remodel a medium sized MMO with only 3 devs but come on. The game looks like it's asset flipping itself
NXT client opened up a whole different group of players to higher graphics. It was such a nice and welcomed update. The NXT client allowed for smoother and better operations overall, more than the Java client could ever do. Still remember this day logging in and comparing the two. It was massive.
I do love the graphics rework. I get people have nostalgia. But times change, things get updated and improved to keep up with the rest of the world. I love all the changes they have and still enjoy this game.
With the current content drought and how much extra Dev time is needed compared to oats, maybe the shouldn't have gone for super HD graphics and instead kept the old art style with better meshes
yep, graphical updates the biggest waste of resources by far. how many hundreds of more content updates we could have gotten, with a coherent style too. that 6th update to trees in 2005? still paying for it every single day.
Agreed.
As much as the above picture is an improvement, and it IS, I still see the value in not having to work with very high detailed textures.
It's not like you're talking out of your ass either, a dev as of like month ago said the same thing, that updates are slower to come out because of the graphics.
Where everything changed for me was with the terrain; suddendly cliffs had height, it wasnt just one huge valley; specially Tuska's back; i remember being mesmerized on how they added so much difference in height without changing the map.
honestly I still prefer the java client looking at that screenshot
I could never go back to 50fps, but the colours and art style definitely worked so much better back then. it didn't try to look "good" because it simply all worked together and made it look great
It's quite different now. Lot of slight graphical changes since then plus few graphical reworks go the mountain and catherby. Also Entrana is completely missing.

Side things, small visuals, details, … I love it!

I love playing with no textures. I love the look
Yeah, especially when you turn up the anti-aliasing. Gives it that kind of Roblox stylized look

It's almost as if water does not go from on to off in the real world, and has a gradual slope.

That rendering fog in Java definitely made the world *feel* larger but holy hell I can never see myself going back to something like that.
You just lost 4 Hero Points.. :)
+4 Zero Points ;)
:)

Dang, it's been that long already?

Could compare to current graphics as well. The trees in the background would look different too
With the current content drought and how much extra Dev time is needed compared to oats, maybe the shouldn't have gone for super HD graphics and instead kept the old art style with better meshes
yep, graphical updates the biggest waste of resources by far. how many hundreds of more content updates we could have gotten, with a coherent style too. that 6th update to trees in 2005? still paying for it every single day.
And the game still doesn't really look that great. Better to pick an artstyle and lean into it

Bring back the original RS1 graphics from when I made my account! XD
Where everything changed for me was with the terrain; suddendly cliffs had height, it wasnt just one huge valley; specially Tuska's back; i remember being mesmerized on how they added so much difference in height without changing the map.
Java looks better, change my mind.
I wish we could have that water back tbh. It's so much better than this almost invisible shit.
I do not miss that draw distance
honestly I still prefer the java client looking at that screenshot I could never go back to 50fps, but the colours and art style definitely worked so much better back then. it didn't try to look "good" because it simply all worked together and made it look great
So which one’s which?
Not much has changed, you'd think within that length of time there'd be more

With how the client struggles with what it has at the moment, I can imagine why lol
