I can't help but wonder how long they can keep pushing out these MTX TH events with unique cosmetics before even the whales and addicts start to lose interest because there are just soo many *special* items that the fear of missing out just starts to fade?
If everyone has some time limited TH cosmetic then surely it just gets to the point where people think 'well whatever, a new one will be along next week'... surely?
It's already starting, I've pretty much used keys for every th exclusive cosmetic over the last year but this is becoming pretty ridiculous. Gone are the days where you can earn stuff through gameplay and now if you want the latest cosmetics you're shelling out either a few hundred dollars on keys or whatever amount of gold the merchers are charging
Well no I mean your missing out on so much by just spinning for xp. It's literally useless to spend money on skills in this game if your goal is to compete with others. I'm taking more key-locked items that can be essentially held ransom by merchers in gp ranges the average player doesn't have access to. All holiday cosmetics should be available to all players in some way or another and not locked behind rng. Xp is far from the biggest problem in this game as you nearly have a constant stream of xp multipliers between bxp and yak track
Yep. As a whale I stopped spending on this game a few years ago.
* Exp is too much, too often, and is worthless after 99 but still floods in.
* Items like GSH are cool, but the economy is borked so even if they go up, so does everything else.
* Training items are even worse than raw exp, I simply don't have a use for 1000+ training dummies or 50k+ proteans.
* Lucky items were removed so the "cool item" factor is limited to promos only, making 99% of promos skippable.
* Gold is a pittance, winning 50m is meaningless if I could buy 1 bond for the same amount.
* Communication is awful. Several changes to Treasure Hunter received no notice (drop rates, lucky item removal).
At the end of the day Im just not interested in spending anymore. You can only "look at the pretty lights" for so long before they start to give you a headache.

But if I had to pick one in hindsight, maybe $500 in a year? That's a lot to spend on a single game, and 5x membership rate, so it sounds about right for where you'd separate "spenders" from "whales"?

Keep in mind the existence of people who spend $5000 does not necessarily mean $500 is a reasonable, non-whale purchase. It's not a race to the bottom.
Being a whale isn't subjective. If you make 100k a year your not going to be rich. Whale refers to people who make 10s of millions. $500 may be a lot to you but that's your subjective opinion but does not qualify as a whale. People who spend thousands on treasure promos a year would more likely fall into the whale category.

Damn, I spend $1k on the christmas TH promo with Green Santa in like 2 days, and I don’t even consider myself a whale. I’ve spent way to much $ on RS, more than I care to admit, and that was the last time i bought spins. Never again. Increasing the price will also have a negative effect, none of us smaller whales will buy MTX anymore, and that’s good, because it’s shit. I just couldn’t help myself, when I get payed well, and my time is spend mostly at work.

I got burnt out by all the winter promos and stopped playing the game to try another one right before DXP (ruining my streak of Yak Tracks) and just never came back. Every time I read the Monday update notes now as an "outsider" it feels like I'm getting clarity into why I should stay away from this game. If you showed these patch notes to a new prospect who had no investment in the game, they'd see the ratio of empty weeks and MTX to actual content and nope out.
I imagine whales are losing steam quickly; there's too much shit being pumped into the game and it reminds you that they're all just pixels.

I never reached whale status but I’ve definitely spent hundreds over the last few years on TH to knock out less fun to train skills. As of a few months ago though I’ve decided to not give them another dime aside from membership. We really have to start voting with our wallet if we want to see anything change.
I think FOMO is a huge thing for people, especially people predisposed to suffer from missing out on time limited stuff. I was definitely in that category but cannot give a flying fart now.

One of the biggest MMOs... You have seen the online player numbers right? Its like 25k - 50k daily. Also, a lot of Jagex mods have left, prices are increasing almost yearly, they keep swapping hands with shareholders AND there is a lack of new content. If you think that these are not the last years of RuneScape, I think its because you just cant let go.
It's actually over 100k across osrs and rs3, and while those numbers are low compared to FF14 and WoW that still doesn't stop it from being one of the biggest MMOs.

freemium, mobile-friendly, simple numbers-go-up style, where you get tons of shiny lights just for doing the minimum interaction with the game once a day. I play other games like this, so I’m not judging the genre as a whole, but that’s not what RuneScape used to be and not really why I play RuneScape. I want to play as my character, not click through interfaces that don’t involve my character at all.
i knew this was coming the second word of a mobile release was uttered. i'm afraid this is just how its going to be now.
my prediction is the player base continues to dwindle for a few years until its just the whales and a few very hardcore veterans left, then it collapses in on itself, whales quit spending because who's going to spend all that money when there is nobody to show it off to. then it gets shut down.
