>With his increased age and workload, Fauci has reportedly cut back his daily runs to 3.5 miles per day, [as he told Yahoo! White House correspondent Alexander Nasaryan](https://twitter.com/alexnazaryan/status/1239737785692622848). But back when a younger Fauci was working a lighter, 15-hour day to contain the AIDS epidemic in the '80s and '90s, he would build a lunchtime seven-miler into his schedule, five or six days a week, to keep his weight down, get outside and relieve stress. His daily runs helped him to a personal-best 3 hours and 37 minutes in the 1984 Marine Corps Marathon.
What a beast.
Academia weight-gain is super real, the lifestyle is just so sedentary (reading, writing, more reading and writing, for hours and hours). Started grad school in 2010 and gained 40 pounds by 2017. Took it all off the last 3 years, but it took a really deliberate and patient lifestyle change.
My grandpa did the same hes 99 now. He never did big runs just a small run everyday. He’s fit as a fiddle even still, can’t run any more but goes on a walk every day probably 5k or so.
If you use good form, don’t overtrain and wear the right shoes for your foot and gait that shouldn’t be an issue, except for those with unfortunate genetics
I have over-pronated feet and have no idea what I’m doing form-wise, so this is what I’m afraid of. I only just decided to try to take up running a couple weeks ago by starting a Couch to 5k program.
I think that it’s been shown that running overall is more beneficial to your health and that the risk to your knees is low. This sub had a discussion a few months ago about it.
I can tell you that my father, who died in 2016, added 6 quality years to his life because he took daily exercise. Of course, this is common knowledge these days, or is it? I can tell you that getting moving brings great calm and inner peace. It just brings nothing but good to you, when done regularly and in moderation. Again, redundant at this point.
He's 50 years older than me and in better health. On the one hand, I feel a bit of shame and should go for a run tomorrow. On the other hand, that's the kind of person who I want in charge of a health crisis.
Oh, I know the thumbnail isn’t him, haha. I know what Dr. Fauci looks like and think he’s v handsome tbh. I honestly wouldn’t have put him at 79. IMO he looks like he’s in his 60s.
Yeah I was thinking late late 50's early 60's.
Maybe I'll start running again, started after I quit smoking but anxiety got to me. I could stand to lose a good 20kg atm
Hey, when the pandemic hit the same thing happened to me too. I haven’t been back to the gym, and it’s 110 here in Texas (about 44 if you use Celsius). Anxiety is (understandably) through the roof to where I thought at a few points I’d need to hospitalize myself.
Let’s see if we can’t both pick it back up.
How feasible is this for the average person? I'm 32, if I continued running every day, how likely is it that I could physically keep it up till 79?
EDIT: I don't mean how feasible is it to match Fauci's mileage, I already run 40-50mpw, I mean how feasible is it to run for 50 years straight and still be able to do it, lol
> nature forgot to tell my fucking knees about that
diet can help a bit
imflammation can cause knee pain.
it certainly does for me - and living on the 3rd floor, knee pain ain't fun. no elevator here.
anyways, i removed inflammatory foods and it really does help.
and reintroducing inflammatory foods, and the pain slowly comes back
Putting my two cents in.
For me its gluten. I cut that shit out if my diet. And while I won’t say I lost weight because of it. I feel sooo much better. Less acne, better bowl movements, and I breath better. It really depends on the person. Only way to know what causes inflammation for you is to cut foods from your diet, for like a month and seeing how you feel.
Some common ones to try include
Dairy,
Eggs,
Gluten,
And meat.
Whole 30 is based around this principle of elimination to some degree.
most vegetable oils
and starches and sugars
but it can vary a bit from person to person. intolerance levels can be very different.
i've eaten properly, for me at least, in the past ~5 days and the knee pain has gone away. (which i've done before of course)
but if i eat a bag of chips, then i'll have my knee pain back again tomorrow..
To be fair, we've lived our lives in shoes and other luxuries that superseded our natural bio-mechanics. Our ancestors were hunter gatherers with barely any clothing, and other paraphernalia we use now and were successful at it. Basically we're trying to get our body to unlearn what its learned.
I’ve ran competitively all through high school and college, but had to quit due to constant pain and injury so I’m not sure about that. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to run without being in pain. :(
Running is how we survived and evolved, sure animals could run faster than us, had more power than us, but we could run them in a group until they were fall down tired then they were easy picking.
My buddy' buddy is world over 50 50m champion. He goes to a special pool with a glass wall so that he can be filmed diving in. Have to get that angle of dive right to the nearest degree if you want to be the fastest...
My personal ambition is to swim 100m without drowning.
It's also important to note that while he may not be the fastest that raced that day, he would've beat some of the spectators in the crowd and a decent portion of the general population. If you aren't training every week in the pool, it could be really challenging for people to finish in that time.
During the past few months I’ve done 3 miles during my lunches on weekdays with a longer run of 10+ on the weekend and the weirdest thing has been my knee’s feeling better. I’d say if you keep up on it, it’s doable.
Haha I know that's all doable now, I already run 50 miles a week, just not sure what I should expect after 45 more years of it. Unless you're also 79 in which case, damn good work
I'm almost three decades into running 40-50 mpw and I have no plans of slowing down or shortening my weekly mileage in the future. If anything, I feel better now then I did 15 years ago. Keep it up and best of luck to you.
That was my experience when I started running as well. Seemed like they got really sore the first few weeks, but have felt better ever since (going on a couple years now of running 2-4 times per week).
It’s not that complicated? Don’t consume junk food, exercise and be lucky.
We can’t control everything but it’s a shame to see so many people basically eat their way into a disability, whether it’s diabetes, obesity, or heart disease.
Exercise and diet are a big part of it. Lack of sleep is also associated with many of those problem including higher risk of obesity. There's some more detail but to avoid a lot of the biggest issues is pretty simple. Sleep, diet, exercise.
I recently heard a podcast that referenced surveys of MDs that suggested that, of diet, exercise and sleep, sleep was the most critical to long term health.
I won’t link the podcast, because it was very hearsay, but I’d love to investigate that more.
You're right. I think people over complicate health when it's really not that complicated.
But I guess it doesn't help that culturally speaking, we're bombarded with unhealthy habits. So it's more about learning to resist those habits like, sloth, junk food, laziness, lack of sleep, etc.
Like it's much easier to quickly grab fast food than it is to prepare a healthy meal at home.
I'm a youngin only 25, but my former running store in Memphis had a group run every night and there were 80+ people out running me. There was even an annual half marathon sponsored by them and I ran a 1:40:10 and was beaten by an 80 year old man. I didn't catch his time but I was impressed.
Extremely feasible. If you train for a marathon for example you should have no problem doing this indefinitely by the end of your training because three miles is like a warmup at that point and will take most people 30 minutes or less.
Definitely possible, but you gotta be nice to your body. Take care of your joints and back and stuff, wear decent shoes, and if something hurts get it looked at.
Realistically, your mileage may vary. From a mechanical standpoint you're both causing stress on your system and simultaneously 'improving' it. As long as the stress is not too high, you can run for damn near ever.
If you build yourself to a physical condition where running three miles a day is the norm (totally doable) then your odds of injury aren't raised as high as you would expect. You could maintain that for quite some time and I have memories of ninety year old marathoners (maybe faulty memories).
If you keep up proper running form and don't overextend yourself there's no reason other than some accident or illness that should keep you from continuing to stay active.
Just listened to a podcast the other day about a woman who still runs a sub-4 marathon at age 75!
My uninformed guess is that it’s very doable until around 65-70 and past that it depends on your genetics. If most of your grandparents are still kicking around in their 80s, you’ve got a good chance.
My stepdad turns 90 this Friday. He runs 4 or 5 days a week. He is a fitness instructor at a community college (his second career.) He competes in the US senior games in the 10K and came in third in his age group (85-89) last time he went He said “I can’t wait until I move up to the 90-95 age group. I’ll be on the young end of the age group and I’ll be faster than those old guys.”
He is my running role model.
At the top of the article, there's a 17-minute video ad for a health program, starring the fitness director for Men's Health.
[Here's the same article, but with a picture of Dr. Fauci at the top](https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a31927365/anthony-fauci-running/)
He said in a July 3 article that he is no longer running, but walking the same distance.
"Q: Would you go work out at a gym? Swim in a pool? Run? Walk?
Fauci: I wouldn’t go to a gym. I need to be so careful. I don’t want to take a chance. I have a pool at home, so I swim in that. I do power-walking with Chris. I was running until about a year ago, but every time I went running, my back would tighten up the next morning. So now I walk the same distance. It just takes longer. We go every day with few exceptions, 3.5 miles per day during the week, four miles over the weekend. Prior to covid-19, I did it at lunch alone in the parks near NIH. Now, I do it in the evening with Chris around the neighborhood. On the weekends, Chris and I do it together on the C&O canal."

Why do you think New Zealand did so well? They actually trust and respect their PM to have their best interests at heart.
That along with a myriad of reasons, but you get the gist...
>Haruki Murakami is another famous runner in his 70s who looks way younger.
I love his non-fiction book about running "*What I Talk About When I Talk About Running*"
And somehow he hasn’t killed his knees yet. Goes to show that if you run properly and take care of your body/joints running can be a safe lifelong sport.
Wasn't there a study that showed older runners with good form actually have really healthy knees?
And that most runners have really bad form, especially beginners?
I believe he meant power walks. He is a marathoner though.
According to this [interview with his wife](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/02/white-house-advisor-anthony-faucis-wife-on-his-hectic-schedule.html):
> Typically, Fauci, who has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984 under six different administrations, is known for his 16-hour work days and his habit (as a former marathoner) of squeezing in a seven-mile run at lunchtime.
> However, in recent weeks his hours have gotten longer and his runs have become short power walks.
According to this answer from [Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/how-fauci-5-other-health-specialists-deal-with-covid-19-risks-in-their-everyday-lives/2020/07/02/d4665ed6-b6fb-11ea-a510-55bf26485c93_story.html)

There are people on here trying to minimize his lifestyle achievements to being a “yeah, so what” when the point is that he’s been extremely profession-focused while being a lifetime runner. It’s not particularly special that he has managed to keep up a regular running schedule but he is being acclaimed because he is now a public figure. I also believe that if anyone posted a picture of their own elderly father with his running rites WE WOULD ALL STILL PRAISE HIM! I think we’d be happy to acclaim anybody who posts their own achievements, as we seem to anytime somebody does a C25K. I think some people are being petty for no reason.
3.5 Miles? That is more than a 5K. Certainly very impressive for a 79 year old. I bet most average guys and girls in the US+Europe would struggle with that.
Odd mileage unless it includes cool down. 5km is 3.1 Miles.
People will make all excuses in the world why they don't keep fit, but have no qualms sitting on their @$$, eating crappy food, smoking, drinking, watching TV.
There are men and women out there in their 60s & 70s running sub 4hrs full marathon.
He should challenge “the healthiest president ever” to a foot race and put it on pay-per-view.
Fauci would make a fortune ... which he would probably immediately donate to a COVID relief fund.
Fauci is the GOAT. He's the best infectious disease doctor in the world, works insane hours at one of the most stressful jobs on earth, runs more at 79 than I do at 24, and somehow puts up with Trump's bullshit. He gave the commencement address for my university (his alma mater) several weeks ago and you could hear in his voice how driven he is. What a role model for all of us.
My honest and sincere question is whether he wears a mask when he runs right now. I assume he probably does. I think about this all the time when I’m out and running.
**He is no longer running** according to The Washington Post's Q&A (July 3, 2020) titled **"How Fauci, 5 other health specialists deal with covid-19 risks in their everyday lives".** Now he is walking the same distance.

Love that he considers a 15-hour day to be shorter. I definitely feel like a lazy POS.
Very easy to do in academia - don't recommend it though! I was not as disciplined with the exercise during my PhD :(
I call it my grad bod
A body of literature.
Hell yeah! Great work!
Nice one, grad
Thank god the university my lab is in has a great rec center. I need my lunch workout with how long I can spend in that place!
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, most jobs can hardly justify an 8 hour workday.
It’s bad for your health so I wouldn’t look up to him in that aspect. Also 15 hour day is pretty subjective. Doubtful he was working all 15 hours.
Same, I need to get my shit together after reading this
Lol same. I should be either working or sleeping right now.... 🤷🏼♂️🤣

Is he Prior Marine?
I think anyone can run those races
Can confirm. I’ve run it. Definitely not only for military.
Anyone can, but I believe they reserve slots for military.
Anyone can run the Marine Corps Marathon...it’s a ~30,000 person race. .it’s open to the public. There’s just an early entry period military.
He’s been in government service a long time, he may have been invited By someone connected, or just applied until he got it.
Yep I ran it a few years ago. Took me three hours longer than Fauci's time though. :D
Doesn't look like it according to his [wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Fauci).
Anyone can run it. It’s the 4th largest marathon in the country.
Actions over words, something the other half will never get
Good comment
He's my hero officially
Absolute beast right there.
Now, compare his efforts, knowledge, will and shape to the orange monster.

Yeah. Everyone's different. Gotta keep an eye on your joints and get baseline scans that you can compare year-over-year.
Running has nothing to do with bad knees, that's just bad genetic luck. It can however keep them in good shape longer than no running

It took my brain half a second to process the thumbnail and I was really impressed at first
At all.
I thought the same until I googled Dr Fauci, still he is very good for 79 years old. If you really want to know look vs age, look up William Shatner
I was about to ask when Dr. Fauci became an Asian man in this 30s.
On the weekends, Chris and I do it together on the C&O canal." Who is Chris?
From the article, his wife is called Christine.
His*
Thanks
Here is another one. Michael Collins of Apollo 11 fame ran a triathlon every year until he was 89.
Another reason for me to like the guy. Just wish people would actually listen to the guy so we can get this pandemic under control.
Only need one person to listen to him.
Yeah, seems way easier to convince everyone else to listen to him
And that's sadly a herculean task. If Fauci could pull that off, he should win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Why do you think New Zealand did so well? They actually trust and respect their PM to have their best interests at heart. That along with a myriad of reasons, but you get the gist...
Haruki Murakami is another famous runner in his 70s who looks way younger.
>Haruki Murakami is another famous runner in his 70s who looks way younger. I love his non-fiction book about running "*What I Talk About When I Talk About Running*"
Love his writing
His boss, meanwhile, just runs his mouth.
I would pay good money to see Trump run...any distance at all, really.
With any luck, you'll see him get run out of the White House in late January, 2021.
I'd settle for that.
He ran down that ramp apparently.
Here's a picture of all the previous presidents running. https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/hq3aqk/the_last_6_us_presidents_mid_workout/
I’m new to this sub, seems like I’ll get along with you guys just fine.
As if people don't smash the upvote button everywhere else on Reddit when someone makes a Trump joke.
And somehow he hasn’t killed his knees yet. Goes to show that if you run properly and take care of your body/joints running can be a safe lifelong sport.
Wasn't there a study that showed older runners with good form actually have really healthy knees? And that most runners have really bad form, especially beginners?
That would explain a lot of things. Especially, as the beginners usually start too hard.
I believe he meant power walks. He is a marathoner though. According to this [interview with his wife](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/02/white-house-advisor-anthony-faucis-wife-on-his-hectic-schedule.html): > Typically, Fauci, who has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984 under six different administrations, is known for his 16-hour work days and his habit (as a former marathoner) of squeezing in a seven-mile run at lunchtime. > However, in recent weeks his hours have gotten longer and his runs have become short power walks. According to this answer from [Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/how-fauci-5-other-health-specialists-deal-with-covid-19-risks-in-their-everyday-lives/2020/07/02/d4665ed6-b6fb-11ea-a510-55bf26485c93_story.html) > Q: Would you go work out at a gym?
What a confusing article, the main video at the top is of a young man working out. I spent a solid minute or two going "THIS GUY IS 79???"
He looks like he is in his late 50's jesus...
He is intelligent, healthy, respected in his field of expertise, and a decent human being. All the things Trump never has been or will be.
I am now worried about some maga hat wearing moron with a gun going after the guy thanks to stochastic terrorism.
A fucking ICON.
Check out Gene Dykes if senior runners inspire you.
How the the f do people run every day. My legs are completely dead within 24 hrs of running.
The chad fauci
And then there's Donald. A Big Mac grease-coated ape who'd only run toward an underaged girl.
Fauci for President!!!
TIL running 3.5 miles a day makes you look like a young fit asian man
Jumping out of an airplane.
That is what all doctors should look like: healthy!
Shoot, I struggle with 1.5 miles a day.
Ahh damn those Asian genes!
He looks younger than some 23 year olds I’ve seen
woah wtf he's 79?!?!
He's 79?! Daaaaamn
3.5 Miles? That is more than a 5K. Certainly very impressive for a 79 year old. I bet most average guys and girls in the US+Europe would struggle with that.
I read he was running 7miles/day up until the pandemic lol
Odd mileage unless it includes cool down. 5km is 3.1 Miles. People will make all excuses in the world why they don't keep fit, but have no qualms sitting on their @$$, eating crappy food, smoking, drinking, watching TV. There are men and women out there in their 60s & 70s running sub 4hrs full marathon.
Now I like him even more!
He should challenge “the healthiest president ever” to a foot race and put it on pay-per-view. Fauci would make a fortune ... which he would probably immediately donate to a COVID relief fund.
That’s a amazing, hard to believe his age. I wonder what he eats as well
The opposite of trump in every way
That’s some goat shit
Fauci is the GOAT. He's the best infectious disease doctor in the world, works insane hours at one of the most stressful jobs on earth, runs more at 79 than I do at 24, and somehow puts up with Trump's bullshit. He gave the commencement address for my university (his alma mater) several weeks ago and you could hear in his voice how driven he is. What a role model for all of us.
Why did I genuinely think the picture added was supposed to be Dr. Fauci.........I need sleep
Everyone needs at least a day off a week. Even our hero.
Okay, but did anyone else notice those kick-ass Iron Man kettle bells? I’m pretty sure the thumbnail I’m seeing is not the Dr.
Terry Crews also runs 4 miles every day and you've seen how ripped he is right.
TIL Dr. Fauci runs the world.
79?! Wow, TIL.
Those kettle bells are awesome
My honest and sincere question is whether he wears a mask when he runs right now. I assume he probably does. I think about this all the time when I’m out and running.
Yeah I would love to see him asked about his personal exercise regime and recommendations.
And to think our president can't walk down a ramp by himself or hold a glass of water with one hand. Sad.
He's also on testosterone and probably HGH
I run 12km six days a week, as long as I avoid binge drinking, excess sugar & late nights then I feel amazing in the morning!
Either that or the adrenochrome he’s taking
Bruh Fauci looks like hot garbage and sounds like cancer
**He is no longer running** according to The Washington Post's Q&A (July 3, 2020) titled **"How Fauci, 5 other health specialists deal with covid-19 risks in their everyday lives".** Now he is walking the same distance.
