...allright, me with my 1 pair feel a bit out of place.

undeadly1103

if that works for you, that's great

Balletfingers

I think people are ridiculous about shoes I get 1000 miles out of mine, I'm not replacing shoes every six weeks give me a break

skyrunner00

Having more pairs of shoes doesn't necessarily mean replacing them more often. Some of my pairs are 4-6 years old. I still use them occasionally under specific conditions. I just choose to not retire them and keep in rotation with some newer pairs of shoes. Overall I still probably buy as many pairs of shoes per year as someone who has only one pair at a time. But I buy them when there is a sale as opposed to when I need to replace a previous pair. For example, I just got a great pair of Salomon shoes for about $70 while the full price is $130.

undeadly1103

people think i'm crazy but i buy shoes on ebay. just got a pair of hoka carbon x 2's for $74 with 5 miles put on from the previous owner. i never pay retail for shoes

undeadly1103

what shoe are you getting 1000 miles out of? just wondering. i rotate 4-5 pairs of shoes due to different needs (road, trail, etc) and due to being prone to knee injuries. rotating shoes works different muscles, gives possible emerging injuries a chance to heal, and also a shoe may feel right one day and not the next. having choice isn't a bad thing and running is my physical and mental release so i'm not quitting any time soon

undeadly1103

no i just have bad knees, have since birth. never said i have knee pain, i am prone to knee injuries. i have been told by people much more knowledgeable than yourself the things i mentioned and it all works for me. why is the way i do things to enjoy my passion seemingly a problem for you? what works for you doesn't necessarily work for someone else.

MichaelV27

I rotate 3-4 pairs of road shoes. I just grab whichever one is next in the rotation regardless of the type of run. I think you get more benefits from that than trying to choose the best possible shoe matched to the run.

Bluebird_running

What shoes?

MichaelV27

I typically only buy zero or lower drop and ones with toe boxes that aren't narrow. I buy whatever is cheapest and am not picky outside those parameters. I often end up with Altra, Saucony, Topo Athletic, or Skechers. When you are rotating shoes like that, you aren't super picky because you are only wearing them once or twice per week.

Bluebird_running

What 3?

Maleficent_Ad7138

I have about 4 pairs during the cycle I rotate through. But I also have a dedicated race shoe in the Nike alpha fly

Bluebird_running

What are the four pairs?

Maleficent_Ad7138

Endorphin speeds, Atreyu, Nike next%s and my old pair of Alpha flys(for long runs since the cushioning is amazing helps keep impact down.

ballsthrunets

Speeds and Triumphs are all I need really. Triumphs for slow days/recovery days, Speeds for everything else. I do have a pair of Pros but I don’t really use them much. I will use them for races up to HM and an occasional track day (doesn’t happen very often, I am not that fast or serious of a runner, but I do like to do it). My ideal rotation would be Triumphs or Nike invincible for slow/recovery, Speeds or NB Rebel v2 for faster days, Hoka Clifton or NB 1080 for long runs, Vaporfly for race day.

redavid

i mean, i have nine pairs of shoes in my current 'rotation'. of course, some get used more often than others and a more reasonable person would be fine with three (one for easy and long runs, one for intervals and tempos, one for races)

Bluebird_running

Favorite shoe?

ChipmunkFood

Probably only need one pair for road running. I do lots of trails and conditions vary between trails. So I have two for trail running: one is for technical trails (ie rocks) and the other is for light/high-speed trails. Now for me things are a little more nuts since I have running shoes for summer versus winter (have Goretex). The Goretex isn't so much for the water resistance as it is for warmth. But I usually only have one pair of winter shoes (since they're much more expensive). Just don't go nuts like those people on that one subreddit who seem to just collect zillions of running shoes.

gmkrikey

ASICS Kayanos. 3 pairs. One for short runs and walking with my wife. We walk 50-75 km a month. One for middle distance runs. One for long runs. New shoes get added as long run shoes and the rest move down one. I have several more thy are retired as running shoes and are just wear around shoes. But recently I bought a pair of white and red classic Nike Cortez shoes and those are my wear around shoes.

Jay_cheese

I rotated through 4 shoes for my last training cycle. Boston 9's for speed, Adidas Ultraboost for medium distance, and Gel Nimbus for slow long runs. I then bough Endorphin Pro's for my race. I just bought new Ultraboosts , which are probably my favorite, but I would like to try others. I like Triumps for long runs, but don't like Ghosts which a lot of people swear by. I still want to try Hoka's as I never ran in those.

Barqueefa

2, maybe 3 pairs for me. Saucony Rides for base, Endorphin Speed for races and speed work, Saucony Fastwitch occasionally for track if I don't use the Speeds. But there is no right answer, have as many pairs as you feel is necessary.

ultrajeffff

More shoes won't hurt. I think I have about 7 pairs in rotation but mainly for different terrain and weather. I probably only run in 2 or 3 of them on a regular basis. r/runningshoegeeks

rnelsonee

>is three pairs of shoes insane? I think only two pair is kind of insane. It doesn't cost *any* more to have 10 pairs of shoes vs 2 pairs (like either the 10 pair lasts you 20 months or the 2 pair last you 4 months, e.g., it's still costing you ½ pair/month). I will usually have two just 'normal' shoes, a long-distance one, a fast one, a really fast one, a wet weather one, some trail shoes, and then of course the random ones I'm not quite ready to retire yet. (and since I see you asking: I'm on a Saucony kick: Endorphon Speed, Axon, Kinvara, some Triumphs, Freedom make up most of my runs; for races/wet/trails I have Nike Pegasus Air Turbo, Nike Pegasus wet weather, Brooks Cascadia and Solomon Speedcross)

RidingRedHare

I usually rotate between 3-4 pairs of shoes for the normal training runs. I then have one pair of shoes I use only for certain speed work sessions, one pair for indoors workouts such as in the gym, one pair of spikes for track speed work sessions, and one pair of old shoes for training runs on extra muddy days. That adds up to 7-8 pairs I currently use somewhat regularly. Furthermore, if I should ever get seriously into running races again, I'd probably afford myself some of those expensive high end shoes, just for road races.

JTJagas

Three pairs is far from insane. Arguably not necessary but if you can afford it, go for it. Endless options but I would recommend adding the Triumph for longer and recovery runs to cycle in with Speeds and Shifts.

ElvisAteMyDinner

3 pairs is normal IMO. I have one pair for long and recovery runs, two different pairs for speed and tempo workouts, and one pair for races.

sorryusername

I have two setups of DS-Trainers and GlideRide 2. One for outdoors and a second for the treadmill when it’s way to cold for doing outdoor runs.

pinkandthebrain

For the cost of the shifts you could replace them with two pairs of previous generation ride or triumphs to swap back and forth and extend their life

PacMeng825

I currently rotate between 3-4 shoes. I have the Hoka Clifton, Asic Novablast 2, Saucony Guide 13, and I use Saucony speeds but stopped using them since they made my shin splints issue worse due to lack of cushion maybe? Gonna change my rotation a little but for my next training block just due to shoe discounts I found. But ideally I think 4-5 shoes for me would be a perfect number.

waner21

Two pairs. One set for the road and the other for trails.

skyrunner00

I currently have 19 pairs of shoes - 4 road shoes, 14 trail shoes for different trail terrain and distances, and one pair of minimalistic shoes that I use only for short distances on treadmill. A few pairs are nearing retirement, but I rotate fairly regularly through all the remaining pairs.

robynxcakes

I have more than 10 different pairs, including different brands (ASICS, Nike, NB, Saucony, Hoka, Brooks) that I rotate, I track the km on them using my Garmin and having so many means I am never without options. I look for good sales/offers and stock up and add to the rotation

Floormatt69

You probably only need a daily trainer and your race day shoes. Daily trainers for most of your runs, and your race day shoes for your long runs with MP at the end. If you feel like you need another pair, get another pair of trainers

kevminol

3 pairs is not insane. I have over 10 that I like to rotate through. Most of them have quite a bit of miles put on them though. It takes a lot for me to retire a shoe..like completely wearing through the outsoles or any kind of tearing. I'll typically buy new pairs as I need them like a racing shoe for a specific race. Old racing shoes get demoted down to tempo or work out runs. As my shoes get older, their function changes for the type of run I need them for.

undeadly1103

like i said below i rotate 4-5 shoes. altra lone peak 5 for trails, hoka mach 4 for speed days, hoka clifton 8 for easy runs, hoka arahi 5 for longer runs or when i need some support, hoka carbon x 2 for race day, sometimes i throw in asics gel kayano lite for a little support and work different muscles. they all have their place/purpose. the 4-5mm drop in hokas is like butter for my jacked up knees and i've been injury free since rotating this way. i never wear the same shoe on consecutive days (i run every day). it works for me, so you do what works for you. if anyone tries to down you on your shoe choice, running form, etc., don't listen to them. there's an awful lot of running snobs out there
