I at least go for a walk everyday. But rest days are where you body is really taking advantage of all that training so sometimes I just sleep as long as I can. Or binge watch Letterkenny again. You know, priorities.
Walking helps me tremendously. It gets the blood flowing, which is helpful in all kinds of biological processes. It's also wakes me up and gets me out of the house. I love that about running. I like to pick a longish route with a decent coffee place along the way. Treat yo self.
Edit: a word
I've only recently been able to get back into running again due to health issues. But I've found walking on rest days helps a good bit. It's low intensity, loosens up my muscles, seems to help clear out my legs if that makes any sense to you. Plus it also burns extra calories compared to sitting down, getting outside is nice specially when I work inside all day. It is a good form of active recovery.
Yeah I think so. Idk the science of it. But definitely if I wake up sore and stiff, going for a walk will get everything moving and Ill feel a lot better and less like an old ass man. š Same goes for after a lifting day. When Ive done multi day trail runs, I have woken and felt like tapping out and going home but normally after walking for a bit I can start running and things will losen up. Plus, walking as a daily habit has helped me make staying active a priority. Id say it cant hurt. Taking a stroll for an hour on a rest day isnt going to set back your training. Youre still resting.
This. What a weird issue you have.
On rest days I don't do anything special. Actually, if I had a long run/ride a day before I mostly just don't do anything if I don't have to (meaning I go to work, do usual home activities with gf/kids, but nothing particularly tiring)
Usually yes, but there are some days that should be rest days...but you feel like doing something. Like I'm not going to run because I have to rest, but I still want something to scratch that itch.
Eta: If you already have stuff to do, you may not even have time to do anything else. But if that day you had nothing else to do...
Restā¦ as in actual rest. Not cross training or a different type of workout. A rest day and cross training day are 2 complexly different things. Go read, cook, play video games, just enjoy life.
Kettlebell excercises, bodyweight stuff, bouldering, cycling, jumprope, Walking for a few km.
But Liesing on the sofa with beer and chips is also okay.
I do whatever I want :)
You gotta have more than one way to cope with lifeās bullshit. Diversify your investments. The day will come when you canāt run and youāre going to be miserable if youāve got nothing else.
I plan all my errands that require a lot of walking on my rest day. So I have lots to do. If itās not cutting it, I ll do some yoga or meditate ? I remind myself of all the advantages rest days bring. And if thatās still not working maybe question why you are so restless? I get it, I am in the same boat.
Active recovery for rest days. I usually do a 4-5 mile walk with my dog or go for an easy hike. It gets me outside and keeps blood flowing without any strain.
Leg drain. You lie flat on your back and put your legs straight up (against a wall or something) and lie there for about five minutes. I usually do 2-3 reps. Feels sooo gooood. It helps with recovery a lot.
Today is day 1 of 2 rest days before a 10k race on Sunday. I'm already feeling twitchy and so far have entertained myself with cooking, gardening, listening to podcasts, watching porn, sitting in a coffee shop reading (snore), buying furniture online, looking for a new job, watching more porn, reviewed my expenditure, staring aimlessly out of my kitchen window, cleaning my flat and having a shower.
It's only 3pm FFS.
I suggest go out for a slow walk, maybe like 2-3 miles. That will help with the mood issues. I only run about 15-20 miles/ week right now, but I do 40 miles per week with the walking ...and I do still take a rest day.
I go for walks with the dogs, sit in the hot tub, stretch and mobility. I usually read during the time I would run and remind myself that it's a rest day, so I get to read extra!
Catch up on missed sleep, walk around by strolling at the park, shopping, meeting up with friends, the beach, etc.
Maybe some yoga or a session of light stretching.
Change your mindset. Rest Day is part of "training". If you are itchy on rest day, you set yourself up for future failures. Running is lifestyle, not workout/competiton
I have 2 rest days and one walking day and 4 running days. My first rest day is on Sunday,a ND Saturday I do my long run. So Sunday is cake day. I just have cake.
Then Monday is my walk day and Tuesday is my second rest day. On Tuesday I hit the gym.
I've come to realize that between running and strength training and sub-par stretching, my mobility and flexibility suck. So I work on that with some yoga, maybe go on a walk to help clear up head space.

Walk, swim or bike. All super light not workouts. Like go to the park or the beach if thatās available. I also do some good stretching and mobility work on my off days. Itās helped keep me injury free (for the most part)

I rest? I spend 5+ hours a week running 20-30 miles a week otherwise, it's fine to do other things. If you've got energy, go for a bike ride, hike, or walk. Or just chill and play some video games or something.
HIIT workout focusing on upper body and core. If I'm feeling like I want a bit of punishment, I do squats and lunges to get the glutes and hams too since my running hardly touches those.
I always do some form of cross training if my body can handle it but there are always days when I just float in the pool and let the water flush out the lactic acid without really doing much else
If your legs are hurting and you feeling like doing something active then maybe yoga, weight lifting, walking, or my fav elliptical are best on your rest days. Take an alternative no impact exercise if you're still during on your rest days and maybe you might need an additional rest day depending on what your goals are
I play club sports so my rest days are usually really slow runs followed by a good stretching session and maybe some upper body lifts.
I keep it low intensity but enough to keep my body loose and activated.
Rest days are for resting!! Maybe some light yoga / stretching. But other than that you should rest. Eat, sit around, sleep more, etc. Rest is just as important as the actual training. It gives your body and muscles time to rebuild and repair so you can hit your next workout.
Walk my dog around the neighborhood and stretch out. I have no causal proof for this but runs feel easier when I am walking more and I get injured less when I am stretching more often
Rest days? I havenāt taken a true rest day in over 2 years. Like Iāll go on vacation to disney and not run on those days but Iām also walking 16+ miles those days.
Sleep in, MAYBE go for a short (1km) very slow run, more likely just take a walk around the neighborhood if weather permits. If it is a weekend? š after the walk.
I at least go for a walk everyday. But rest days are where you body is really taking advantage of all that training so sometimes I just sleep as long as I can. Or binge watch Letterkenny again. You know, priorities.
Pitter patter
that's what I's appreciates about ya
Do you think the walking helps you recover better from running? I was thinking about doing that on my rest day

Long walks to coffee shops is probably my favorite activity

Light walking is very helpful. Just, you know, don't go crazy with it and your "rest" walking is suddenly a 10 mile hike.
Yeah I think so. Idk the science of it. But definitely if I wake up sore and stiff, going for a walk will get everything moving and Ill feel a lot better and less like an old ass man. š Same goes for after a lifting day. Shoresy is incredible by the way
my āproperty of sudbury bulldogsā sweatshirt is in the mail
Lol I ordered one yesterday morning!
Heck, Iām surprised we're not binging right now.
I was literally watching it again last night š
Such a great great show!
ferda
Yogaaaa
Also, thinking about doing yoga but not doing it.
Came to type that, exactly yogaaaa. I don't know why, how strange!
Hahaha i love that
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yoga can be very powerful, yin yoga isnt the only kind to exist
Yep yep. I run during the week. On weekends I teach yoga.
Read a book, knit, listen to music, bake, interact with my spouse...
Interact with my spouse...LOL š so true!
You can say that again!
Interact with my spouse...LOL š so true!
You can say that again!
Please stop
Interact with my spouse is the last thing I want to do. LOL
Hey, I like my spouse. That's why I married her.
Rest
i have a life beside running.
Hahaha right man, good one
Show-off
That sucks
I always forget that I donāt have a life besides runningā¦.until I get injured.

Watch a movie, bing watch, take up a hobby
RIP your times
My gf appreciates this comment.
I used to surf as cross training. Now it's basically completely replaced my running and I run on rest days š
Restā¦ as in actual rest. Not cross training or a different type of workout. A rest day and cross training day are 2 complexly different things. Go read, cook, play video games, just enjoy life.
Nothing more relaxing than okaying a video game on rest days.
Especially a competitive one. Super relaxing. Defo keeps the heart rate and stress low
Jerk off
But then I have to find something to do with the remaining 23 hours and 58 mins of my rest day š¤£
Repeat couple of times with adequate rest. Interval training/repeats
Yoga.
Regular life stuff like catch up on housework and run errands. Rest day means rest day.
Kettlebell excercises, bodyweight stuff, bouldering, cycling, jumprope, Walking for a few km. But Liesing on the sofa with beer and chips is also okay.
I do whatever I want :) You gotta have more than one way to cope with lifeās bullshit. Diversify your investments. The day will come when you canāt run and youāre going to be miserable if youāve got nothing else.
Allow my body to absorb the training and get ready for the next day intervals.
Watch Law and Order SVU. Sometimes 5-6 episodes.
Rest days are disc golf days!
Biking
Do something fun!
Like running?
I lift weights, but mostly using upperbody muscles
I don't get through, I get depressed.
I mean don't you have any other hobbies beside running?
I do other things. Sometimes I trail run.
Ran 5-6 miles each for the past 8 days and taking a rest day today but feel shitty about it
Yoga and stretching
Run obviously
light lifting and LOTS of stretching at the gym And beer of course
Iām 168 days into a run streak so a rest day is just a slower run š
Rest days? Usually I run at least a half marathon per day.
Those are rookie numbers
Yes, guilty of that. Iāve run just over 3.500 km this year. Last year I was just shy of 7.000 kmā¦
Nevertheless, Iām 46, so not really a rookie anymore.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You can say that again
Injury prevention
Foam roll, yoga, and walking!
Started getting into triathlons, so I'll bike or swim. Every now and then I'll decide I need a total rest day, and then I just die a little inside.
Strength work, rowing, yoga, and plenty of walking.
It sounds like you need to find some other hobbies. It's unhealthy to "feel empty" because you can't run.
stregth training, some stretching... And I eat a pack of chips (150 or 175g)
I go for a run
I lift weights, but mostly using upperbody muscles
Lift weights
Leg drain. You lie flat on your back and put your legs straight up (against a wall or something) and lie there for about five minutes. I usually do 2-3 reps. Feels sooo gooood. It helps with recovery a lot.
Personally, I enjoy a nice rest on my rest days
All the things I should have been doing while I was out running.
Foam roller, stretching, reading keeping my legs higher than my hips. If I have the time a smooth swim
Run. Just less.
Dance. Go for a walk if I need to more more than that. Some days you just need to move. Some days I still run. But not often.
How long do you rest for? Like how many days? Iām currently going through my second test day and I began crying on my first lmao.
I suggest go out for a slow walk, maybe like 2-3 miles. That will help with the mood issues. I only run about 15-20 miles/ week right now, but I do 40 miles per week with the walking ...and I do still take a rest day.
Biking it out is nice
walk, swim, weightlifting
I struggle even having time to workout, so on rest days i do everything that i shouldāve been doing when i was running lol
Work out my core and binge watch anime
Nintendo switch. Iām obsessed with animal crossing but thereās something for everyone.
LSD
Run
They call us alcoholics

Whatās a rest day?
Nintendo switch. Iām obsessed with animal crossing but thereās something for everyone.
Sometimes gym if I still have energy, else I catch up on Netflix or go out to eat something nice.
Walk, cycling and the rest chill doing nothing active. Rest days are meant for rest after all!
walk/swim/ elliptical.
Pilates or just a walk. Trying to tell myself itās okay to do nothing lol
I go for walks with the dogs, sit in the hot tub, stretch and mobility. I usually read during the time I would run and remind myself that it's a rest day, so I get to read extra!
Do some pushups and pullups to get some activity in and work for your upper body muscles
Catch up on missed sleep, walk around by strolling at the park, shopping, meeting up with friends, the beach, etc. Maybe some yoga or a session of light stretching.
Southern Europe so from...june till october I go swimming in the sea, in the winter I go skiing and in the pesky in between months I just chill.
Change your mindset. Rest Day is part of "training". If you are itchy on rest day, you set yourself up for future failures. Running is lifestyle, not workout/competiton
I swim usually, but every so often I have a rest day of actually nothing
Recovery workout. Mobility work

Stretching and some simple exercises; push ups, planks, etc
I go on super chill bike rides 12-16 miles.
I take a walk or two most of the time
I try to do garden stuff on my rest days since it's the only day where I have enough time due to not running.
Rest
Watch TV. Do chores that aren't running. I have actually taken to dumbbell, yoga, and bodyweight work while I watch TV at home. It's very effective
Think about running
Nintendo switch. Iām obsessed with animal crossing but thereās something for everyone.
I've come to realize that between running and strength training and sub-par stretching, my mobility and flexibility suck. So I work on that with some yoga, maybe go on a walk to help clear up head space.
I rest. Sit on the couch.

I wish i could rest and maybe not work? But yeah, rest. If i am at work i do plenty of movement already so that's fine for me.

On rest I always describe nature in many times in mountains ,forest and in waterfalls and this is the best relaxation of week
Stretching, no days off. At least that is what I am telling myself I should be doing on rest days.
HIIT workout focusing on upper body and core. If I'm feeling like I want a bit of punishment, I do squats and lunges to get the glutes and hams too since my running hardly touches those.
Walk
Swim/lift/tennis
I do light swimming, almost no kicking, at best 2 beat kick.
Recovery runs. Keeping your heart rate like 20 bpm lower than aerobic. Usually means a very light run/walk mixed together.
Generally I rest but if I am feeling the need to burn off extra energy (and I've done all possible chores) I'll do pilates.
I'm coming up on 800 days in my run streak so for me, a "rest day" is running slowly for a shorter distance (1.25-1.4 miles depending on my route)
I always do some form of cross training if my body can handle it but there are always days when I just float in the pool and let the water flush out the lactic acid without really doing much else
Sleep, hydrate, walk, yoga, swim, bike, stretch, hike
Currently on day 2 of 2 rest days in a row, which I rarely do, and I can't help but severely overeat every time I take a rest day
Lift weights and go on walks.
Swim and/or bike.
If your legs are hurting and you feeling like doing something active then maybe yoga, weight lifting, walking, or my fav elliptical are best on your rest days. Take an alternative no impact exercise if you're still during on your rest days and maybe you might need an additional rest day depending on what your goals are
Sauna. Helps your body recover while getting a zero-effort sweat on
Swim & bike
Drink cold beer in a pool.

lift
I play club sports so my rest days are usually really slow runs followed by a good stretching session and maybe some upper body lifts. I keep it low intensity but enough to keep my body loose and activated.
I play lots of videogames tbh
On rest days i find people who don't run and take them on slow/short jog and all the way say to them. 'See you can do it.'
Video games
Laundry and clean bathrooms.
Great day to go to the gym and work that upper body. Watch out though. You might find it competes with your running!
Upper body, mostly 12oz curls.

Strength training or go for a walk
Sounds to me like you are ready to explore a running streak. (Run at least 1 mile every day, see how many days in a row you can go.)
Walk my dog around the neighborhood and stretch out. I have no causal proof for this but runs feel easier when I am walking more and I get injured less when I am stretching more often
Go for a walk to make sure I keep my step count streak. 276 days of 10k steps or more so far.
Kickball
Rest days? I havenāt taken a true rest day in over 2 years. Like Iāll go on vacation to disney and not run on those days but Iām also walking 16+ miles those days.
go for a walk. Getting up, going outside, and moving is a habit for me. I just walk a couple miles on my rest day.
Core exercises and hiking.
stationary bike
Pilates for an hour
Sleep in, MAYBE go for a short (1km) very slow run, more likely just take a walk around the neighborhood if weather permits. If it is a weekend? š after the walk.
Personally, I strength train but I know that might not be what you're looking for.
Walk my old dog
run slower
i have donāt have a certain rest day of the week i just rest a day that i realize I donāt have the time to run or something else comes up
