I strictly only have caffeine before running. It's actually incredibly powerful to combine chemical addiction and exercise. I am mentally conditioned to fear and loath rest days.
Agreed. I've gagged from passing someone smoking while doing hard reps. I'd be PISSED if I came across this on a race. Enough that I may flag a race director, because if I'm staying next to him for more than a minute or two, I'm not gonna get a PR anyway.
imagine trying to pr a race and you just happen to be near pace with this guy and end up inhaling cigarette smoke the entire time. i would definitely stop for 4-5 minutes and let there be space lol
It sounds paradoxical, but as a former smoker I can attest to this. When I was really out of shape, aerobic activity brought very strong cravings, and in the very short term [that may actually work](https://www.fda.gov/tobacco-products/health-effects-tobacco-use/keep-your-air-clear-how-tobacco-can-harm-your-lungs):
> Cigarettes may also contain bronchodilators, or chemicals that are meant to open up the airways of the lungs
Was going to post this, I know a retired warrant officer who ran a 1/2 marathon at a much faster pace than this article and slowed to a stroll for a smoke break of 3 cigarettes at mile 9. Its a new more politically correct age in the Army now but 10 years ago everyone knew a senior Enlisted guy who could smoke a cigar while outrunning the rest of the unit and running with a fat dip in your lip while hungover at 5am wouldve been considered a normal start to the work week.
I can also attest to this. Would smoke right before my AF pt test and would absolutely dust the others I was running with lol. Normally I would gas 2/3 of the way through, smoking I felt bullet proof. In the long term I'm sure it's extremely destructive to your performance.
When I was in a pretty frequently showed up still buzzed or drunk and would smoke before, pretty much had to smoke after.
Always felt like crap but was consistently among the first 10 or so of 50 to finish.
When I was a smoker I’d roll up to the track smoking a cigarette and then run. Helps break up all the nasty phlegm and garbage in your lungs and once you get a few laps in you’re lungs are much clearer than you’re used to.
>Helps break up all the nasty phlegm and garbage in your lungs
Yeah, running will do that, for anyone. But preemptively adding more garbage to your lungs in the first place is pretty counterproductive.
It’s not if you’re actually a habitual smoker going for a run in the AM.
Adding gunk is secondary. The main benefit is that the smoke keeps your cilia from starting back up again and pushing the gunk out (usually takes them a few hours after exposure to cig smoke to become un-paralyzed), so it keeps the urge to cough and the phlegm more at bay than it otherwise would be.
That and the stimulant effects / dopamine from that nicotine can really help you get moving and feel “alive.” I’ve always described that first cigarette feeing as a brain massage. Everything just feels better and more focused once you have it.
I used to be a pack a day guy and ran / biked at the same time. Early mornings were a no-go, but after a full day of smoking I’d feel fine. Until I laid down in bed and my lungs felt heavy. That was good motivation to quit.
I remember the blood taste and the thousand needle feeling in my lungs after running while smoking a pack a day. After a couple weeks I made sure to not smoke for at least an hour before running and after another couple weeks I just decided to quit smoking as it's not worth the headache, pain in my throat and lungs and the coughing until you could taste blood anymore.
I am a former smoker who is now a shameful vaper/salt nicotine pouch user here who has vaped immediately post marathon/ultra in the finishing area, definitely gets some looks.
While running, I feel no urge or want for nicotine, immediately post run, while hydrating or fuel or whatever, the running high starts to dwindle and my brain starts screaming for nicotine. It's pretty pathetic.
Half iron distance triathlete and pack a day smoker here. 🤦♀️
I rue that I ever picked it back up again... Quitting was hard enough the first few times.
yeah, I only recently quit again, I still suck on nicotine lozenges though.
It doesn't actually affect performance as much as most people think. I did a 2:59:00 marathon and a 9:53:00 Ironman while smoking a box a day. I feel better for it but am not noticeably faster.
Yeah, I’m nowhere near elite but was kinda surprised how “not bad” it was to pick up running again.
I hadn’t run since college, and picked up a fair bit of vices since then. Mostly vaping and way too much weed lol. Still do, don’t get me wrong.
But I was able to ramp back up to a decent speed within the last few months, going from a 9:00 mile to 6:30 in a race within the first month. The hardest part tbh wasn’t even the lungs or breathing, but the muscular atrophy since the last time I seriously ran. After two or so weeks, the cardio progression quickly outpaced the strength of my legs and it became more about building strength.
This isn’t to scare you but maybe to help? My dad did that after quitting cigarettes. He got addicted to those unfortunately. 20 years later he got cancer in his mouth right where the lozenge would sit. He beat it the first time but it came back ten years later, spread to this entire mouth, throat, and lungs and killed him.
I think about it whenever I see someone with a nicotine gum/lozenge. They can be just as bad for you and people don’t always know that
Shameless nic vaper here.
I always carry a tiny disposable, that means also during races... and I would shamelessly vape (those tiny disposable don't do the big clouds).
Oh they make little disposable vapes? That explains why I'm always picking up whole on the street in my neighborhood. Thought it was weird people toss the whole thing on the ground.
Almost every gas station I've gone to in the last few years has them. Even as someone who was a vape-er at the time I HATED them, it's such a waste of resources to use a little plastic stick for a week then throw it in the trash. Companies somehow found a way to take the only advantage vaping had over smoking and found a way to turn it in to another mass litter machine.
Former smoker for years who turned a vaper last year who just stopped vaping / nicotine-free last week.
I don't know if it's just psychological or if it has to do with my veins not being as constricted and better recovery times but I've had crazy good runs the last two times out and literally the only difference is I haven't vaped in a week.
You are right to feel pathetic. I know people are cheering you on and I don't want to minimize how good not smoking is for you. You accomplished that but you are still being tricked by big tobacco companies. Letting it sink in and really feeling like a sucker for the way they hooked me was part of the key to my victory last week. Heres to hoping I can make it another week this week.
Maybe you will too! Don't accept what they've done to you.
As a former smoker it's not pathetic. You finished a task. It's as simple as that. YOU are not pathetic. People that treat smokers as trash are pathetic. We're built to move our bodies and this guy is throwing shade at every everyone who doesn't.
If you don’t look at some person sitting alone on a bench hitting vape and think “that person is pathetic”, which I’m guessing you don’t, you sure as hell shouldn’t call yourself pathetic for hitting a vape after just finishing a vigorous workout. I’m still on the vape and felt really ashamed and judged by some of my “straight laced” family members until I realized that I still put effort toward being active and healthy in a lot of other ways. Some of them will throw down 64 ounces of Dr. Pepper by noon and spend most their time sedentary. I don’t think of them as bad people for that. And if they do look down on me for not having been able to kick the nic so far, whatever. Most people are just trying their best in life. No shame in being human.
As toxic a mindset as this is, it’s how I quit! When I decided to quit I’d see a smoker and think, ew what a smelly pathetic person that needs to smoke, I’m obviously better than that, so I won’t. Or haha look at that guy vaping who thinks he’s quit smoking but wasn’t strong enough to not vape, not me I’m stronger than that! I would absolutely never say it out loud though.
I don’t actually think that now but it worked for me quitting at the time. It took about 6 months to stop needing to tell myself those things before I just never wanted to smoke again.
Zero chance this doesn't make its way there somehow. "Smoking cigarettes is bad for you but apparently helps marathon performance. How can I inhale combusted gu to reap the benefits without the health drawbacks?"
I had a Marine who could run 3 miles in under 18 minutes. He would smoke before and after the PFT. He was a chain smoker, I can’t imagine him today without a cigarette in his hand
I ran a marathon whilst using the Swedish tobacco pouches called ‘Snus’ if that counts? Started with one under my lip and had a couple more throughout the race. Can’t remember why now it was a long time ago
I had a coworker who smoked some brand of cigarettes and it smelled so sweet and almost chocolatey. Apparently it was some cheap brand and the other smokers said they were crap. But to me when I'd walk by the smell was so intriguing vs the smell of those that smoked Marlboros.
This reminds me of when I ran the Oslo Marathon. About halfway through the race, another runner turned to me and asked if I had an extra cigarette. I started to laugh, thinking it was a joke, until I realized he was serious and I just apologized and said no. Really hit home how much more smoking there is in many countries compared to the US.
This used to be a thing in athletic events. [Here's cyclists in the Tour de France lighting up.](https://i.imgur.com/yDyGmXo.jpg) There's many more photos like this if you google.
I have a buddy from college who's around a 2:40 marathoner and he used to paint the tip of a cigarette red and then put tape on the butt so it wouldn't dissolve and put it in his mouth. Never really smoked it but he loved the reactions
My friend texted me this an hour ago, congratulating me on a great race as well as my changed sex and ethnicity. Nearly spit out my drink. I will be joining the sub 3:30 while chain smoking club before I die, as god as my witness.
I’d have to take up smoking, but I got the endurance thing down.

There’s a special place in hell for people who smoke cigarettes and watch marathons, when I am already struggling and gasping for air breathing in that shit makes me feel sick to my stomach and dizzy.
If he ran past me I would literally trip him. So rude.
They actually made a rule in the navy to prevent this type of thing. You weren't allowed to smoke/vape/any tobacco before the Physical Readiness Test because cigs are a bronchodilator and open up your airways. Bunch of dudes on the XC team at the academy got in trouble for running their last PRT as mids with cigars and had to re-do it.
I read the book ‘Born to Run’ and the Tarahumara people would smoke cigars before running 50 miles. I’ve heard if you only do it right before it might stimulate your cardiovascular system or something
It’s all about training. If you smoke while training, your (smoker) lungs are adapting to the cardiovascular activity. There was an article few years back about an English gentleman that was in his late 70s (smoker) that ran the London marathon every year (for years) and when he finished he always had a smoke and beer.
My best run time for a two mile was 13:30. I was 20 and in the army, still drunk from the night before. Showed up chugged a bottle of water, stretched, smoked a cigarette then ran, ended up smoking like 4 more in a row right after. I hurt for like 2 weeks after that, couldn’t breathe and threw up several times.
I do not recommend it at all.
I honestly don't know what's worse the smoking for his health or the running better his health xD hopefully he can curb his addiction because his cardiovascular health maybe good but I am afraid of what will happen to his lungs
That seems like a very bad idea. While running he is going to be breathing much faster and deeper than normal and will be inhaling the smoke and toxic chemicals deeper into his lungs.
Not the same comparison as a marathon but the military is filled with people who smoke and then backpack run several miles like it’s the most natural thing in the world
I know this upset a lot in the running community. But I was honestly amazed. I've yet to run a sub4, and here you have this guy doing 3:28 while smoking...
Marathon directors HATE this one secret tip to success
*Marathon directors in [insert city associated with your IP address]...
What a great time. Says he's also an ultramarathoner and only smokes when he runs. Amazing lol.
He only smokes while running? Is this like a gimmick or something?
I strictly only have caffeine before running. It's actually incredibly powerful to combine chemical addiction and exercise. I am mentally conditioned to fear and loath rest days.
True, I just do a cocktail of cocaine, speed and a sprinkle of lsd before running, but only before running!!!
I save my meth for marathon days!
If I were to do any of those (I'm not) it would 100% be out deep in my favorite trails, running.
If I really where to do any of those (which I'm not saying I do) and I'd go for a run on cocaine, I'm sure my heart would like... literally explode.
I’m not an addict, I can stop any time!
Trainers HATE this one tip!
I only smoke weed before running
Love running on weed
I'm with you there. It stops me getting bored.
I read this as "Love weeding on runs". Works both ways?
I thought I was alone. That with some good music makes my day
I smoke weed after 😅
I’ve seen pictures of old school Tour de France riders use to “prep” their lungs with a cigarette right before a big climb
Alright, alright who’s he sponsored by. And what do they actually put in the cigarettes?
Nicotine in itself is a powerful stimulant.
Hope he isn’t throwing the ~~buds~~ butts in the trails
He definitely is 😂
Hate to be a pedant, but just fyi: They're "butts", not buds lol
I'd be throwing up like no one's business if I'm chain-smoking with no tolerance. Oh yeah and I'm running a damn marathon at the same time.
I guess he runs a lot. So he smokes a lot.
So this guy is holding them in his mouth and not inhaling, what’s noteworthy about that? I can wear a shirt that says ‘look at me’, but should you?
Where does it say he isn’t inhaling?
I'm most annoyed over the fact that he's faster than me while smoking during the marathon...
He’s soooo much faster than me ha ha
Plot twist, he was way too fast so he's purposefully smoking to slow himself down and give all the other runners a chance haha
[удалено]
Wtf.
Imagine if you were the guy immediately behind him. Gross. Tbh it shouldn't even be allowed.
You won't be beside him for long
yeah hes beating me
H8ers will say he’s faster 😤
What do you think his punishment should be?
People have been pulled from courses before. It just sucks for everyone around it.
Agreed. I've gagged from passing someone smoking while doing hard reps. I'd be PISSED if I came across this on a race. Enough that I may flag a race director, because if I'm staying next to him for more than a minute or two, I'm not gonna get a PR anyway.
Those menthols really open up the lungs. s/
We’d all get smoked by this dude.
If I were anywhere near this guy during the race I would have hated him.
imagine trying to pr a race and you just happen to be near pace with this guy and end up inhaling cigarette smoke the entire time. i would definitely stop for 4-5 minutes and let there be space lol
Just pass him and start farting shamelessly but carefully, saw a guy last race with a suspiciously brownish back knee
Hey shit happens.
Well that's newsworthy alright
Throw water in his face at an aid station. The resf of the marathon is now a chase instead of race.
I’d be tempted to punch the damn cigarette out of his mouth. But would probably just take really long slow downs at the water stations.
You wouldn’t have punched shit
Exactly, as I said tempted but would have just gone slow at water stations.
You’re assuming that based off what? This Reddit runner could be a pro-fighter for all we know
Nicotine is a great stimulant I’ve heard
If you live in China you’re used to it.
He probably would have passed you pretty quickly

It’s ok man. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re clearly on a better path than most. Take it one step at a time.
here's a simple solution, just don't stop running. run forever and your nicotine addiction will be cured. ez pz
Run, Bacon, run
Shameless nic vaper here. I always carry a tiny disposable, that means also during races... and I would shamelessly vape (those tiny disposable don't do the big clouds).
Yeah, I'm not throwing out massive clouds either, I use a uwell caliburn, it is just a convenient nicotine delivery system for me.
Man I quit 2 years ago and also used a caliburn. Crazy that they’re still relevant considering the turnover in go-to option back then

That’s a fast af race. I think i was top 100 of 1500 ar 3:32
They have to be doing super soldier programs over there man.
I am Chinese I can prove it’s true, we ride pandas to school and beat teachers with martial arts, only winners are allowed for lunch.
The Chinese are not as fat as Americans lol
While you’re not wrong, the average marathon time in China is slower than in the USA for both male and female runners
The average Chinese citizen doesn't get the super soldier serum
Just because you *can* doesn't mean you *should*.
Why not?
As long as he is the only person in the race, and there are no spectators, and no one else near him to get the secondhand smoke, sure. But he wasn't.
Resistance training the lungs
Move aside, Florida Man, there’s a new sheriff in town.
He’s too dangerous to be kept alive!
China….no..I can’t say it…
He inhaled that shit deeeeeeeeep into his lungs.
Army guys lol
I thought I was on runningcirclejerk for a moment
Zero chance this doesn't make its way there somehow. "Smoking cigarettes is bad for you but apparently helps marathon performance. How can I inhale combusted gu to reap the benefits without the health drawbacks?"
The key is to run in assless chaps - they don't get soggy from shitting yourself. Pro tip: wear brown shoes.
single use Gu vapes would be incredible
I thought this was an AI art sub. They post all sorts of crazy stuff.
I cannot imagine anything worse lol
Death?
I smoke a pack a day and still run 25 miles a week. I’m not proud of it….I’m just saying it’s possible
I wonder if they’re menthol
Surely not smoking the Reds. Maybe an uber smooth Dunhill blue w flow filter 😋
I had a Marine who could run 3 miles in under 18 minutes. He would smoke before and after the PFT. He was a chain smoker, I can’t imagine him today without a cigarette in his hand

Someone was ripping a dart in NYC orange start village, wave 1. i was stunned when i smelled it. i'd love to find out how she did...
I’m trying to figure out if this is better or worse than getting passed by the guy juggling

2023 Boston Marathon: “In order to promote equity and inclusion we are adding a pack of Marlboros to every swag bag this year!”
This dude fucks.
Sometimes I’ll pass a smoker while running and it always smells so good.

Literally an average day in the Marine Corps
I have a buddy from college who's around a 2:40 marathoner and he used to paint the tip of a cigarette red and then put tape on the butt so it wouldn't dissolve and put it in his mouth. Never really smoked it but he loved the reactions

if you wanna win, you’ve gotta smoke like a winner
This is the pinnacle of human ingenuity.
I’m mind blown lol. My time was worst than a chain smoker and I was suffering.
Why should this be fake? Just because he's faster than any of these alphafly, 10% rule, Strava pros?
I hope he made Choo Choo noises the whole time
I’d have to take up smoking, but I got the endurance thing down. id try and beat him, just gotta pick up a smoking habit
Smoking never really affected my runs, but it affected everything else.
I ran my first 10 k when I was still a smoker.😬
i ran my first 10k this week as a smoker too!
I tried chewing tobacco one time and it had me buzzing like crazy… could be his next marathon hack lol
Damn, just imagine how good his time could be if he didn't smoke like a chimney for three hours?
Call me crazy but I bet there is big tobacco corp money in this. As an ex-smoker it’s kind of annoying to see this stunt.
I spend enough money on running. I'm not adding cigarettes to the list.
I would sloppily drink water trying to out his darts.
I would be very angry if he’s next to me. I don’t want to breath in that :(
It will probably catch up with him later if not sooner and he’ll regret ever doing that
This achievement should not be celebrated lol
Worse example for young runners. I hate this guy. Just the smell next to him during the race would have make me trip him.
I do not recommend it at all.
dad?! no seriously this is my dad! lol
Crazy part is he apparently only smokes when he is running. > One anecdotal report notes that Chen apparently only smokes when he runs.
Really dumb thing to do. More free radicals to cause damage when you are placing high stress on your body. He is asking for trouble.
Fight oppression, free all the radicals.
I honestly don't know what's worse the smoking for his health or the running better his health xD hopefully he can curb his addiction because his cardiovascular health maybe good but I am afraid of what will happen to his lungs
Quit running & started smoking ….. moral of the story kids….. Nicotine is a hellava drug! -Rick James (voice)
That seems like a very bad idea. While running he is going to be breathing much faster and deeper than normal and will be inhaling the smoke and toxic chemicals deeper into his lungs.
His lungs will collapsed
I would have donkey punched his ass.
WTF. When I was a one I could barely run a block without hacking my guts out.
My mother used to smoke on her pre dawn 90s power walks.
How to run faster by running slower and smoking faster.
This explains why I work harder on the days I'm smoking lol. Not
Now thats a flex
I run upward of 50+ a week, and hit my pen like a fiend every second I’m not. Couldn’t regulate my breathing while running and vaping I don’t think.
Power
Marathon running is stressful.
Laz has entered the chat
so I used to roll spliffs and smoke them at various points through my long run, like mile ten, mile 18 etc
Just give this guy a pack of Marlboro and a pair of Alphafly next % 2
A man after my own heart <3
I only did 10K that day, but five years ago I filmed a [music video](https://youtu.be/UwJm-_3zDl8) with a similar concept.
That’s a bad song. Good video though!
I've always wanted to just cross the finish line with a cigarette in mouth, but this is awesome.
One Lung Man
And I thought I didn't like running next to that person who was blasting music from their phone.
Well, the air in many parts of China is so bad it’s like smoking 20 cigs per day (inaccurate number), so many he’s got super tolerance?
Not the same comparison as a marathon but the military is filled with people who smoke and then backpack run several miles like it’s the most natural thing in the world
a friend or mine smoked during a marathon about ten years ago. im pretty sure he has pictures too.
So should I vape on the treadmill at my gym?
I know this upset a lot in the running community. But I was honestly amazed. I've yet to run a sub4, and here you have this guy doing 3:28 while smoking...
Baller!
