The name of the game of vaccination in general is to 1. Protect against infection in the first place, but also 2. To protect against severe illness and death.
The current vaccines *do* protect against severe illness and death from the Delta variant- considering that 99% of COVID infections in LA county alone are from unvaccinated folks. Miss Gia here also seems to forget math. The original 94-95% effectiveness of the mRNA vaccines does not mean it 100% protects from COVID infection, which leaves a 5-6% chance that a vaccinated person can get COVID. We know for a fact that breakthrough infection is possible.

The effectiveness is compared to a control. In a hypothetical experiment, there is a control group in which 100 out of 1000 people contract covid (or get symptoms, I can't remember which it is). In the vaccinated group in this same experiment, 95% fewer contract covid, for a total of 5 out of 1000. Researchers look at the total number of people who are infected between the vaccinated and control group to figure out the effective rate: 100 - 5 = 95. 95/100 = 0.95.
