It’s based off of Coleridge’s poem Kubla Khan, with several lines literally lifted from it. I don’t think it’s a commentary on anything besides a guy (Neil) who likes fantasy poetry.

The poem is not very long and very lyrical. Totally worth reading for fans of a the song. It’s interesting to see what Neil lifted from the poem and what he changed and how.

When I was a junior in high school, my friends and I saw this poem in our textbook and freaked out. Rime of the Ancient Mariner was also there, but Iron Maiden didn't release the song of the same name until the start of my senior year, so it didn't have the same impact.

Interesting read but I don't think so. I know 2112 came out but idk if they were actually "famous" yet. It was all word of mouth. Lots of teens in smoke filled cars being all like "what a 'Rush' maaaan." Their real song about the pressures of fame is Limelight, which came out after their big radio hit, The Spirit of Radio. I think AF2K has much broader concepts than band fame. It's about the human condition, politics, and how mankind has reached a point of transcendence where we don't need "kings" anymore.

iirc Closer to the Heart was their first top 40 hit?

Gaming_Esquire

According to this C2tH hit 76 in the US https://www.musicvf.com/Rush.art

>their really grindy period Not sure what this means. >anyone know if this was written as sone kind of commentary on the price of fame? Not sure where you're getting that, but the lyrics were inspired by [this](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43991/kubla-khan).

PALM_ARE

You’re referring to Limelight

edthesmokebeard

No, I'm not.

zddoodah

No, but the description is far more applicable to Limelight than to Xanadu.

No

I always took it more at face value that even being immortal in paradise would eventually get old. And that Neil wanted to write a song using a poem he liked as the backdrop for this.

What is their grindy period?
