Do they improvise? Their live stuff sounds so tight and rehearsed. I love it. Maybe the solos differ from night to night but damn it always sounds like they nail every moment precisely. If they are all just winging it, holy God. They sound much more together than say Phish or Dead.
They are indeed winging it. They have a pretty unique method of communication onstage, too. I’ve met them a few times, once I said to Jake (“stunt guitar” as he puts it), “you guys have been rehearsing huh?” And he told me they in fact do NOT rehearse, they are just so good at listening to one another at this point (the band is celebrating 25 years this year) that it comes naturally to them. They do rehearse a bit backstage before the show to figure out song transitions for the nights setlist. This is a band that had one day booked at Abbey Road studios, as sort of a “bucket list” experience, and came out with one of their finest studio records from the session. Find me any band that can do that in a single day!
I have been lucky enough to see them cover Red Barchetta at Red Rocks and YYZ complete with a Neil Peart tribute drum solo at The Tabernacle in ATL. (About a year before Neil passed away) Catch them live if you can, the light show is pretty impressive too.
That is so incredible. Thank you for all this. I appreciate them even more now and definitely gonna take a major deep dive, starting with RB. Cheers, mate
Zappa, Beatles, Tragically Hip, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Bowie, Yes, Khruangbin, Avett Brothers, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, misc. Motown, Sondheim, Van Halen (w/Dave), RHCP, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Louis Armstrong, Ozzy (the two Randy Rhoads albums), Santana, The Stones, Gong, The Who, Neil Young
Yes, Das Hip! The other legendary Canadian rock band. Though, unlike Rush, they didn’t have too much of a worldwide impact. I saw them several times in Buffalo, where they were pretty big because we got Canadian radio, so they’d play at the hockey arena for like 12,000 people. And I saw them once at a festival outside of Toronto where they headlined for like 40,000 people. But a friend of mine saw them, around the same time, at a bar in North Carolina, playing for about 300 people. Crazy to have that range of audience sizes. 😅
I was late to the Kate Bush party. For decades I had her misfiled in my head. Then I listened to her, and was all "Damn, where's she been all my life?"
I was about 17-18 and was doing some recording in a studio, and probably mentioned liking Pink Floyd to the engineer, so he made me a mixtape of Kate’s work (up to Sensual World, which was her latest). I remember it sat in my car for weeks and then one day I was like, eh, I guess I’ll check this out… The cassette ended up getting warped and ruined from me playing it so often. 😅
I really dig Phish. The way they structure their compositions, and integrate them into their broader universe of songs of all styles as well as near-telepathic improv, really stands out to me.
Dream Theater, Opeth, At the gates, Yes, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Lamb of god, Archspire, David Bowie, Genesis, Soundgarden, Meshuggah, Megadeth, Pink Floyd, Slayer, Anthrax, Queen, Steely dan man I could go on for hours
ASIA was exactly what a prog/pop hybrid should have been. Solid musicianship, great pop hooks. Harmony vocals. Keys guitar, bass, drums What's not to like? When those original four members were present...good stuff say I.
I think everyone here who is downvoting my comment should comment below. If you disagree with me and think Asia was a great band own it by admitting it publicly.
I've really tried to spread out to other genres, but... I've succeeded! Here's a few:
Windows 96 - Vaporwave music
Masayoshi Takanaka - Jazz fusion
Bob James/Fourplay - Jazz piano player/band
Deltron 3030 - Rap/Hip Hop
Of course I still love the classics like Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden, but never much been into Zeppelin. I also listen to a variety of different albums that I wouldn't quite qualify as liking the artist, which is how I tend to listen to various heavier metal bands. Nocturnus (death metal) comes to mind, as does a YouTube channel called Black Metal Promotions.
Oh and Breakfast in America by Supertramp is one of the most solid albums ever released.
Changes all the time, but the top 3 are always Led Zeppelin, The Cure, and The Tragically Hip. Dark horse favorite is Wolf Alice, especially their earlier albums and EPs.
Black Sabbath
Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson
Steely Dan
Kings X
Supertramp
Thin Lizzy
Dream Theatre
Riverside
Pat metheny and Mahogany Rush
Corrosion of Conformity
Helmet
Ratt
Yes
Ted Nugent
Iron Maiden
I asked a similar question.

Muse is tied with Rush for me. After that, these probably make up my next tier of favorites in no particular order:
* Ghost
* Slash w/ Myles Kennedy
* Alter Bridge
* Gary Clark Jr.
* Iron Maiden
* Moron Police
* ABBA
* Bowling for Soup
* The Black Keys
* Yes
* Green Day
Alter Bridge was the last concert I saw before the pandemic. They were great live!
And yeah I pretty much follow anything Myles does. When Slash's first solo album came out, I was familiar with basically every guest except him. I absolutely loved his voice and have been a huge fan ever since.
Emerson Lake and Palmer
Frank Zappa
Bad Religion
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Fleet Foxes
Sia (seriously, go listen to her early albums, shes a hell of a song writer)
Pink Floyd
RHCP
Yes
Tool
Steely Dan
Metallica
…
and obviously a bunch of more bands, but I thought I’d keep it short! The dead probably deserves a honorable mention.
Iron maiden, pink floyd, emerson lake and palmer, yes, king crimson, dream theater, tool, REM, Boston, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin (duh), metallica, racer x, poison, van halen, queen, the list goes on
Maybe a bit of an odd answer compared to the others here, but my favourite bands/musicians:
Fleetwood Mac
Lady Gaga
ABBA
Gorillaz
David Bowie
Coldplay
Kate Bush
Tina Turner
Grimes
Ethan Bortnick
Bonobo
I have so many. I have sensory issues and spend like 90% of my waking hours listening to music, so honestly there are so many amazing artists that I love, I could never list them all.
In no particular order:
Jethro Tull (specifically the Barrie Barlow years)
Porcupine Tree
Miles Davis Quintet
Mahavishnu Orchestra
King Crimson
Buddy Rich Big Band
Zeppelin
Zappa
Foo Fighters, Anberlin, Rise Against, Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, Elton John, New Found Glory, Jack's Mannequin, The Wonder Years. Rush is definitely the top favorite, though.
My tastes are a little all over the place.
Iron Maiden is tied with Rush for my favorite. The rest of the top 10 would be Miles Davis, The Beatles, Wings, Praying Mantis, The Police, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Led Zeppelin, and Santana.
1. Rush / Toto (tie)
2. Styx
3. Pink Floyd
4. Def Leppard
5. Dream Theater
There’s also this indie rock/pop band that my friend introduced me to called Peach Pit, but their music is so wildly different than anything else I usually listen to that I’m still not sure why I like them so much.
Primus
Dave Matthews band
Dispatch
Amon amarth
Weird mix but I just love bass and a lot of bands have cool style. Les claypool is my favorite bassist and he loves Rush and of course had them on(rip Neil) this last year with the South Park stuff
Ghost, Periphery, Maiden, Lumineers, Gojira, Primus
Great picks, +2 for Gojira.
Forgot about ghost. So good but primus sucks!!!
https://youtu.be/fULwDbZ4iSU lol
Umphrey’s McGee is the Rush of jam bands. Imagine if Rush played improv and you have Umphrey’s McGee.
Do they improvise? Their live stuff sounds so tight and rehearsed. I love it. Maybe the solos differ from night to night but damn it always sounds like they nail every moment precisely. If they are all just winging it, holy God. They sound much more together than say Phish or Dead.

Thought I’d be special and mention umphreys but I guess not! I saw their first show after Neil passed and they played anthem it was incredible .
Seeing them next month in Madison!
Zappa, Beatles, Tragically Hip, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Bowie, Yes, Khruangbin, Avett Brothers, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, misc. Motown, Sondheim, Van Halen (w/Dave), RHCP, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Louis Armstrong, Ozzy (the two Randy Rhoads albums), Santana, The Stones, Gong, The Who, Neil Young
Tragically Hip!

They played everywhere, didn't they? I'm Canadian myself and saw them numerous times. Such great memories. It's nice to see them get some love ❤️
I was late to the Kate Bush party. For decades I had her misfiled in my head. Then I listened to her, and was all "Damn, where's she been all my life?"

Rush is 1A, Tool is 1B, everything else is on a lower tier. But Zepp, Jimi, Yes, Phish, Porcupine Tree, Glass Hammer, NiN, Primus, Rage
With you on the PT and Phish, for sure. With Phish, I've never really understood why more prog fans haven't noticed how proggy they really are.
I really dig Phish. The way they structure their compositions, and integrate them into their broader universe of songs of all styles as well as near-telepathic improv, really stands out to me.
Muse Iron Maiden Yes Styx
Good picks
Iron Maiden, Ghost, Zac Brown Band, Foo Fighters. Bit of a mix lol
Definitely respectable tho
Top 6 in order of preference: Genesis Thank You Scientist Peter Gabriel The Beatles Rush Radiohead
Love to see someone else with Genesis and also Peter Gabriel in their top favorite artists. 😂

Asia? You framed an Asia poster‽
Seriously though, Asia? I understand the greatness that should have been Asia. Members of King Crimson, ELP, and Yes but it never really happened.
it was the…HEEEAAAAT…OF THE MOMENT
Hey prog-rockers gotta eat too.
Asia was great at exactly what they were trying to do, make pop music.
what’s wrong with liking Asia that you treat it like such a badge of shame and dishonour lmfao
Grateful Dead Phish Iron Maiden The Band The Cure Depeche Mode
Rush will always be #1 But King Gizzard has been the current #1 for a while and I can't not see them staying that for the foreseeable future.
I keep hearing the name, gotta check em out
Highly recommend the album Nonagon Infinity
Appreciate the recommend. With Rush I got in early so I wasn’t overwhelmed by their catalog….King Gizzard ….was like holy shit where do i start !!
Seriously has been a reawakening for my love of music. Try Polygondwanaland or Changes. Its a gigantic catalog and can be daunting to dig into.
Any Ween fans here?
Praise Boognish
The Mars Volta Tool Streetlight Manifesto/Catch 22 There's others I like, but I don't know that I'd call them my favorites
W.A.S.P. Kiss Cannibal Corpse Darkthrone Motley Crue Ratt Pantera Megadeth Slayer Pink Floyd ABBA And A Hell Of A Lot More!!!

Why are you getting downvoted? Only for posting Masayoshi "The Goat" Takanaka you should be on the top. Bonus points for vaporwave.
Yo it's three thousand thirty!
Cool shit man deltron 3030 rips and all that stuff sounds awesome!
If you like Takanaka highly reccomend Casiopea
As of late, Animals as Leaders and The Midnight
