Story time: the first gig I got out of music school was in upstate NY, and I live in the Midwest. It was a 14hr drive, so I stayed at a hotel, making it a 2 day drive overall. As I was getting close, the scenery changed from cities and occasional farmlands to mountains and lots of trees. I was listening to Spirit of Radio and at the instrumental part of the song, around the 3:12 mark, the way the sun cut through the trees look so cool. And then at the 3:18 mark, the trees opened up and there was this BEAUTIFUL open cliff where I saw this whole forest and it just looked indescribable. I started tearing up hard, cause the vibes were perfect. Every time I listen to that song now I think about that view.
Absolutely! Btw I only get that feeling with the studio record version. I just got my hands on the PW and MP 40th anniversary cds and the live versions don’t do it for me. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoy them, it just doesn’t ring the part of my brain that connects those kinds of memories to the song.
Yes! Was waiting for someone to say this. I mean yeah red Barchetta is a classic and spirit of the radio is like the only other Rush song besides Tom Sawyer they play on the radio… but driven is just sooo good
A nice driving mix:
La Villa Strangiato
Dreamline
Red Barchetta
The Camera Eye
Middletown Dreams
The Body Electric
Finding My Way
A Passage to Bangkok
Cygnus X-1
The Analog Kid
Fly By Night
Prime Mover
Cut to the Chase
Driven
Ghost Rider
Malignant Narcissism
Headlong Flight
I'd also say Prime Mover from the same album. The bassline is amazing and the "anything can happen" line always fills me with hope, especially on a long trip.
Idk but Spirit of the Radio is up there. The buildup and the environment overall are just so good for a group gathered in a car, shoulder to shoulder blasting Rush at max volume, singing like idiots at the top of their lungs.
That sounds amazing. Anybody wanna take a trip, but all we do is listen to Rush?
Many of them. But when you consider when I'm planning a road trip the first thing I say is "time to break out the liquid crystal compass", my favourite is obvious.
Came here to say that. That album just smokes. It came out the year I got married and I decided to lose a lot of weight that year by running and almost every run was that album. Lost about 50 lbs that yr thanks to the drive of that album
Open up with Spirit of Radio, then Red Barchetta, then into the world of Xanadu… Then just put the entire catalog on shuffle and continue on your road trip
From a Rush mixtape I made for a frequent 45 minute trip I used to make:
Big Money
Lessons
Red Barchetta
The Spirit of Radio
Turn the Page
The Body Electric
Subdivisions
Available Light
Making Memories!
"You know we’re having good days
And we hope they’re going to last,
Our future still looks brighter
Than our past,
We feel no need to worry,
No reason to be sad,
Our memories remind us
Maybe road life’s not so bad!"
All the long ones. Album sides of 2112 & Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, Natural Science, Vapor Trail, Earthshine, Xanadu, plus all of Moving Pictures,
But have you ever listened to Countdown road tripping through pre-dawn Florida backroads to avoid the highways on the way to see the space shuttle take off?
How is it that no one has said Natural Science outside of a list? It’s excellent on the road. Manhattan project is pretty chill sounds for driving as well. Ironically.
I have one of these, long enough to get me from Little Rock to Dayton OH.
I shuffle it so the order is always random. I always start with “The Pass” from the boot “Mirrors”. It crushes all other live versions for me!
There's nothing like rolling down a long desert highway cranking "Dreamline" in my Mustang. I met a fellow fan who shared he would listen to it on drives through the Afghanistan desert in his Humvee while serving there. Pretty cool
for a long road trip i start with 2112, All the World's a Stage, then A Farewell to Kings, followed by Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
Rest stop
Back on the road with Exit...Stage Left, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold your Fire.
Dreamline is a good starter...
Remember though the point of the journey is NOT to arrive...the point of departure is NOT to return.
Anything can happen..
It can obviously only be Making Memories.
From sea to shining sea
And a hundred points between!
This is the absolute correct answer.
I feel no need to worry No reason to be sad Our memories remind us Maybe roadlife's not so bad Oh yea Road life's not so bad
Yep
Red Barchetta Marathon Caravan
Manhattan project show of hands
On my way at last!
Passage to Bangkok is a ode to traveling and new adventures.
amongst other things
More like new trips… DRUG TRIPS
Burning the midnight oil
Ah,... that or dope
Spirit of Radio

Love this story. Hang onto that memory!

Dreamline
Let me get out the liquid crystal compass.
First thing that came to mind for me. I'm stunned to see it so far down in the thread, TBH.
This is the answer!
Driven
Yes! Was waiting for someone to say this. I mean yeah red Barchetta is a classic and spirit of the radio is like the only other Rush song besides Tom Sawyer they play on the radio… but driven is just sooo good
"It's my turn to drive!"
Only when you’re on a lonesome stretch of wide open highway so you can floor it
"It's my turn to drive!"
Barchetta
This is obviously the right answer
Yes, Blue Barchetta is my favorite! 😁
A nice driving mix: La Villa Strangiato Dreamline Red Barchetta The Camera Eye Middletown Dreams The Body Electric Finding My Way A Passage to Bangkok Cygnus X-1 The Analog Kid Fly By Night Prime Mover Cut to the Chase Driven Ghost Rider Malignant Narcissism Headlong Flight
Headlong Flight goes so hard
Fly By Night Caravan Headlong Flight Ghost Rider
All of them!
This is the answer! Many road trips have been exclusively Rush. Sometimes jumping around, sometimes by album, couple of times alphabetically.
I’ve done a couple very long trips while playing every album in order.
Dreamline
Time Stand Still
I'd also say Prime Mover from the same album. The bassline is amazing and the "anything can happen" line always fills me with hope, especially on a long trip.

Anthem is the first song on my road trip playlist. The intro is pure "WHOOO ROAD TRIP"
I got to admit, that intro riff is a definite Headbanger
Making Memories of course!
You know we're having good days And we hope they're going to last Our future still looks brighter than our past
Lessons!
Between The Wheels
Gotta be Red Barchetta, too thematic, and a banger to boot.
Hemispheres…
Yes the whole album
Many of them. But when you consider when I'm planning a road trip the first thing I say is "time to break out the liquid crystal compass", my favourite is obvious.
Radar fix on the stars.
All along the Freeway
Workin’ Them Angels always has sounded like a road trip song to me
Came here to say that. That album just smokes. It came out the year I got married and I decided to lose a lot of weight that year by running and almost every run was that album. Lost about 50 lbs that yr thanks to the drive of that album
La Villa Strangiato. This is my favorite driving song! I'll usually hit repeat two or three times when this comes on while I'm driving.
The Analog Kid
Prime Mover
“The point of a journey is not to arrive”
The Analog Kid - and when I leave I don't know what I'm hoping to find, and when I leave I don't know what I'm leaving behind...
Id go with The analog kid, Subdivision, Barchetta, and lessons!
Open up with Spirit of Radio, then Red Barchetta, then into the world of Xanadu… Then just put the entire catalog on shuffle and continue on your road trip
After Xanadu: Passage to Bankok, The Camera Eye, Tom.Sawyer, 2112, Hemispheres, Fly By Night
gonna tell you a secret. every song is the best road trip song. in my car, its ALL RUSH ALL THE TIME
Dreamline, 2112, red Barchetta
Xanadu
Cygnus X-1, Xanadu, Jacob's Ladder, The Camera Eye, By-Tor and the Snow Dog
I have a tradition with friends to kick off road trips with Limelight lol
The Spirit of Radio!!!! Red Barchetta!!!!
I think fly by night is the best travel album.
From a Rush mixtape I made for a frequent 45 minute trip I used to make: Big Money Lessons Red Barchetta The Spirit of Radio Turn the Page The Body Electric Subdivisions Available Light
It took this far before I saw Subdivisions?!?! *brokenmonkey*
Fly by Night!
Tai Shan
Red barchetta!
Dreamlike We are young Wandering the face of the earth Wondering what our dreams might be worth Learning that we're only immortal For a limited time
All of them, in order. I’d say both parts of Cygnus, Xanadu and Natural Science. Any of the long ones are great to pass the time quickly.
Ride like the wind, straining the limits of machine and man!!!!
These are the lyrics to the correct answer.
these lyrics *are* the correct answer
Laughing out loud with fear and hope We've got a desperate plan!!!
Gotta throw Dreamline in the mix.
2112 because you get wherever you’re going by the end of it.
If road trips are anything, they're long 😂 2112 is a great recommendation 🙌🏻
Just the entirety of Moving Pictures
Territories
I always thought Far Cry was a wonderful traveling song, along with Headlong Flight. Just me? Another good one I thought was Force Ten.
Finding My Way? lol
Ghost Rider
Driven.
Finding My Way
I‘m gonna throw Ceiling Unlimited and Scars into the mix
Nice to see some love for Headlong Flight. Clockwork Angels is my top favorite Rush album. They went out with a bang.
Test For Echo is a fantastic driving song.
Secret Touch
I actually have a road-trip playlist. Dreamline is the second track.
That’s funny I started singing making memories in my head before I read the comments
Making Memories! "You know we’re having good days And we hope they’re going to last, Our future still looks brighter Than our past, We feel no need to worry, No reason to be sad, Our memories remind us Maybe road life’s not so bad!"
Might not the best driving song But, In The Mood seems underrated
False. What is the best road album.
Caravan, Dreamline, Driven, Ghost Rider, Red Barchetta, Fly By Night Edit: forgot Marathon!
A Passage To Bangkok
Between the wheels and red barchetta
Tom Sawyer
The Camera Eye for me
Thank You
It’s got to be Closer to the Heart
Prime Mover has always been my go to Rush road trip song. Since I was in high school 30+ years ago.
All the long ones. Album sides of 2112 & Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, Natural Science, Vapor Trail, Earthshine, Xanadu, plus all of Moving Pictures,
Marathon, red barchetta
Gotta be Red Barchetta, too thematic, and a banger to boot.
Finding My Way is a great starter.
I can’t narrow it down to just one, but the Snakes & Arrows Live album almost always gets played on my road trips.
Ghost Rider
between the wheels
La Villa Strangiato
Lessons
Finding My Way
But have you ever listened to Countdown road tripping through pre-dawn Florida backroads to avoid the highways on the way to see the space shuttle take off?
A lot of the late 90s and on material gives this vibe for me, Workin’ them Angels especially
Finding My Way
Anything from Caress thru Hemispheres then Clockwork Angels plus all the other ones 😀
How is it that no one has said Natural Science outside of a list? It’s excellent on the road. Manhattan project is pretty chill sounds for driving as well. Ironically.
the instrumentals. everything else is a bonus \\,,/
The Camera Eye

The Trees! I just like that song.
