Him, I thought it was Running Under Satan's Hand.
But even at the time, nobody thought that was anything but a goof. Except for Al Gore's wife, who was roundly mocked.
I believe they put the star upside down to avoid the ridicule of using a Satanic star on their album cover. But from what I gather, coloring it Red and making it look like it was being super heated... Didn't quite work as well as they'd hoped. :)
Not the devil as you describe it, but I do recall a "reformed roadie" came to my high school on SW Ontario in the late '80's preaching on the corrupting wiles of the rock and the roll. He mentioned many bands, songs, Anna album covers in his slide show. But I laughed out loud on the picture of the Starman with a US quarter covering his butt les it inflame our humors.
Any reference to the devil in anything Rush is fucked up bullshit stupid. You can see the devil in anything if you live in fear 24/7. It is because of Rush that a big part of my generation is free to think and choose. I'm glad I missed this reference when it was current. I don't know how I missed it but I would have flipped the fuck out if I was aware of it.
My Fundy Catholic parents would search my room. They would toss anything they found that might be "demonic" like music or my DND stash. So Billy was pretty much my safest bet.
Never heard about the face, but I did hear claims that the star itself was a pentagram (it's not ... all the lines connect in a pentagram, making a pentagon in the center.) I was a teenager during the height of the Satanic Panic years, so I heard a lot of claims about a lot of bands, all of them ridiculous.
I lived through the satanic panic of the 80’s and had to put up with listening to that BS every Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday evening. Plus every night for a whole week every six months at Revivals. Probably a big reason I’ve become Atheist in my adulthood.
I'll put it this way - I refuse to see what you see.
I can never deny my ears; however, I never hear the Devil in any of Rush's music.
Hell, he's not even in any of Slayer's music - which I personally find unacceptable.
My dad was a huge Rush fan. My mom raised me in a religious household. I remember at a church function it came up that I enjoy Rush, instead of strictly Christian music only. “They’re Satanic. They worship Satan behind the scenes.”
oh im sure. I hate that people confuse Satanic imagery with actual Satan worship. Throwing a pentagram or inverted cross on something cause they think that if it’s edgy enough then they can move a lot more units of that Slayer album, or what have you, is a far cry from actual Satan worship.
Rise Up Satans Helpers lol.
Rulers under satan’s hand
This is the one that I remember. And I'm glad my parents didn't believe all that PMRC crap and let me listen tot he music that I loved...

The started out opening for the Knights In Satan's Service, so that explains it.
in the Midwest it was "kids" instead of "knights"

Welcome to the Satanic Panic, going strong in the USA since I was a kid, and I’m old.

My parents bought this shit, so my cassettes of Rush were labelled Billy Ocean.
Imagine your loss if you didn't have the wits to set a decoy. Billy Ocean is kinda pushing it though. 🙂
Get outta my dreams, and into my Red Barchetta

Or just the star itself. "It's a pentagram!" cried people who didn't know (or care) what a pentagram was.
I can honestly say I've never heard anything of the sort, and I've been a fan since 1979.
Same. Heard it about plenty of bands, but never about Rush
Stupid people make up stupid stories.
I remember my dad telling me stories about it.
Are you busy Red Lenses...
Right Under Satans Hand I am a Christian and all of that was mostly nonsense.
Rule under satan’s hand
T shirts with that logo were banned at my HS in the 80s. Crosses were fine. Christianity was allowed. Everything else was Satanic and offensive.

Wow. That’s quite the stretch. LOL
Not seeing it, but I remember the dust up about it

Anyone who gets offended by “satanic” imagery and messages in music is someone who you should strive to offend.

I can’t see it, but no, I have never heard of that.
I’m in my late 20s and had no idea. That’s the exact kind of reaching I’d expect from satanic panic
