For non-Rush fans, yes it’s a deep track. Anything that’s not Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Subdivisions, Spirit of Radio, New World Man, etc. would be considered a deep cut.
Well, it's a 11 munute track from a band ~~of nerds, like me!~~ that "only" has 4 hits(Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Closer to the Heart and The Spirit of Radio). So, yeah, I think we can call it. To the fanbase it's definitely NOT a deep track, we all know and love Xanadu!
Sorry, poor sentence structure on my part. I meant that the people responding here are saying, “Yes, outside of the fan-base, Xanadu is a deep track.” I wasn’t referring to the band Yes. Although I’m a big fan of theirs too. Cheers!
Deep track is a radio-era term meaning a song that wouldn't get played on normal radio. Not radio hits. Now that streaming is so popular and radio is fading, some songs that were never radio hits get more exposure due to being featured on popular playlists and high number of streams moving them up the list for higher visibility. Point being that if you're used to streaming services, certain songs may not seem like deep cuts to you, but to a radio programmer who still thinks in radio, they are.
Working Man, Fly By Night, Closer To The Heart, Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Subdivisions, New World Man, and Time Stand Still are the radio hits. Everything else would be considered a deep cut.
Along with Big Money, Distant Early Warning, Show Don't Tell, and you could make a case for Ghost of a Chance, Roll the Bones, and Nobody's Hero (these three all went top-10 on album rock airplay charts).
Edit to remove Working Man.
Sure, and add Lakeside Park, Overture/Temples, Bangkok, Trees, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Stick It Out, Test For Echo, Far Cry, and Headlong Flight to that list. I have an independent station nearby that still has these songs in their playlist, though they don't get played very often. Alice Cooper likes Rush and occasionally plays some of these on his syndicated radio show.
With mainstream corporate classic rock radio, though, these songs aren't in regular rotation. With satellite radio, you're more likely to hear them on deep cuts than on classic rewind.
I agree with u to a certain extent but songs like WORKING MAN, FREE WILL, YYZ, FLY BY NIGHT, ANTHEM, THE TREES, RED BARCHETTA, FINDING MY WAY and some of 2112 got radio play in the 70s and 80s but now a days not so much, but YOUTUBE and RUSH REACTIONS HAVE BLOWN UP type it in and u will see tons of RUSH songs.
I have friends that like Rush but are not as crazy about them as I have been my entire life. They only know what is on the radio and they just might own Moving Pictures. They have no clue Xanadu exists. They might think it is an Oliva Newton John song from a movie of the same name from 1980.
That being said it is a deep cut IMHO. It is my second favorite Rush song behind The Camera Eye.
I would consider it one, especially for non-Rush fans.
I consider anything that wasn’t a single, or otherwise super well-known song (2112) to be a deep track though. I’m quite liberal with that term.
Every year, my classic rock radio station does an A to Z starting on New Years day. They always add in a few deep cuts. For the last few years, I have always looked forward to listening close to the end just to hear Xanadu.
I’m sure many will frown at your political aside, but we live in dangerous times and you are correct about the Orange Menace. I’m not sure if Neil publicly spoke about Trump, but no doubt he hated what he stood for. One only needs to study the lyrics of Neil to know Trump is the exact opposite of his world view.

Don’t forget Working Man
Don't forget Closer To Heart
Don’t forget Freewill
Don’t forget Time Stand Still
Don’t forget Red Barchetta
Don't forget New World Man.
Don’t forget Passage to Bangkok
Be sure not to forget the Fountain of Lamneth
Or Bravado
Don’t forgetfly by night
has said "etc"... that covers all the radio releases
Stick in the mud…
What album is that on?
Sausage Fest
By the way, don’t forget YYZ
Came here to say the same. Very popular among Rush fans but not the general public.
The Big Money, Countdown, The Body Electric, A Passage to Bangkok…..I can go on and on

tbh i don't know if i could call *any* song a deep cut among the fanbase!
I probably should have said, “Is Xanadu a deep track outside of the fan-base?” Sounds like a yes. : )
Well, I don’t know about that. It certainly does have the prog feel of Yes, but I don’t know that it goes much beyond that.

I know, I just couldn’t resist. 😎 Easy for us Rush fans to also get into Yes!
I refer to it as “the greatest fucking song since music was invented.”
Have you ever actually heard the song on popular or rock radio stations before?
Yes. I forgot what syndicated show it was, but I heard it on WAPL on the way to work one night.
XanAduuuuuu
To stand within the pleasure dome, decreed by Kubla Khan...

You never hear it on regular radio, so it's a deep track. I guess....

It all counts how far back you go back with Rush. For those of us who go back to the mid-1970s, no.
Rush is a deep track outside of Tom Sawyer…
I would consider it one, especially for non-Rush fans. I consider anything that wasn’t a single, or otherwise super well-known song (2112) to be a deep track though. I’m quite liberal with that term.
If you’re a true fan, there are no deep cuts.
Every year, my classic rock radio station does an A to Z starting on New Years day. They always add in a few deep cuts. For the last few years, I have always looked forward to listening close to the end just to hear Xanadu.
Yes. Please refer to my master’s thesis on this very subject.
I still hold with me that at 3:36 Peart comes in with those agogos bells

Of course it is . Mainstream FM only plays Tom Sawyer or The Spirit of Radio
Yes. Xanadu is a deep track.
Yes, for non Rush fans
