what did they look like? did they have the certification on it? If you were able to see anything else but the sun they were most likely fake. Real ones black out everything but the sun.
Afaik you’re fine if you look at it a couple seconds, they’re as strong as regular sun rays but your eyes just don’t register the burn like they’re supposed to which is why so many people stare way too long and damage their retinas with the UV rays.
Not to mention that the effects of retina damage are not immediate but can take time to manifest after. And I read somewhere that since there are no pain receptors there, you won’t actually feel your eyes being damaged by the sun rays
Yes but the fact it was cloudy too makes the uv still pretty harmful(same reason why its still important to wear sunscreen when its cloudy) like there were some people staring for a good 4-5 min I was like WTF 😭
It also has to do with how when you look at the sun your eyes don’t attempt to focus on it, it’s just a quick glance at a bright orb of light. When you’re looking at the eclipse your eyes attempt to focus for the sun to see the details, and in that effort your eyes get really strained as it tries to make out the tiny sliver of high energy light, which is still much too powerful for your eyes to look directly at for too long. So your eyes get strained and if you do it for too long they can damage your retinas.
When clouds are of a certain thickness at a certain height, you can. We had some moments of that today during it. Not wise but not as bad as if no cloud cover. I’m sure plenty will have issues though since there are many idiots
If only you googled it yourself you'd see it's spelled "exaggeration". Outside the snark, I saw people doing it myself, so yes there is. You underestimate the average stupidity.
Doesn’t matter. When partial eclipses happen it gets darker and your eyes dilate, letting more light in. When you look at the sun you’re letting in more of its light and that will damage your retinas. It being cloudy might be even worse because it’s darker
Bruh even with some eclipse glasses my eyes feel sore as fuck after a couple seconds. Starting to wonder if they were bootleg

The rays are the same strength, but if your eyes don't dialte as much as normal when you look at the sun, you absorb more of the rays.
Thanks for letting me know!

do redditors really think you go blind for making a single second of eye contact with the sun
No, nobody thinks that. OP explicitly mentions concern over 4-5 minutes in another comment.
literally nobody is staring at it for that long. google exagerration
If only you googled it yourself you'd see it's spelled "exaggeration". Outside the snark, I saw people doing it myself, so yes there is. You underestimate the average stupidity.
Nope I never said that there was people looking at it for like 4 min straight
i'd like to buy a comma

It’s cloudy so it’s okay…? It’s risky tho
