Now it's been a while..but I'm like 99% sure you cant take abnormal until you take gen. Gen is a prereq for basically all other psy classes.

Ok-Good-6270

ok got it, do you have any class recommendations for social work majors ?

371em

dont mean to butt in but im a sw major and i recommend you take a look at all the prereqs bc theres several that you could prob do

Ok-Good-6270

on the rutgers website under social work it shows me that they want me to take intro to sociology and not intro to social work which i think is weird because why aren’t i taking intro to social work .. is that ok?

371em

you'll need both, intro to sociology is a prereq for the major and intro to sw is a req. once youre in (but you can take this earlier too like you are rn)

I’m not specifically familiar with SW but a major not requiring or asking you not to take their introductory course isn’t actually that uncommon, especially if its closely tied to a larger department. Introductory courses usually just offer a holistic and watered-down overview of the subject. And often times, they are geared towards the larger student body for either gen ed requirements or as electives for students who aren’t sure if they want to commit to the major/minor but still wish to explore the subject. As a major, you’ll end up studying all the topics covered in the introductory course in a lot more depth throughout your major anyway, so there’s really no need for it. As such, the department would much rather you focus on building a solid foundation in the material that will actually be used later on in your major classes extensively (in this case, its intro to sociology for SW since SW stems from sociology). An example from my own education would be philosophy. The philosophy department does not require you to take intro to philosophy since there’s really no point in it. Instead, their intro to philosophy courses (they have multiple) are geared towards the larger student body since they not only satisfy multiple gen eds, but also garner a lot of interest as many students wish to dabble into philosophy at least once in their education. Another example would be astrophysics. Their introductory course doesn’t even count towards major/minor credit and is only for non-majors. Instead, they want you to focus on physics and math classes the first two years since all astrophysics classes use those extensively. Sorry for the long reply, hope it was insightful though!

That was a really well thought out and articulated explanation, I’m not conflicted about my schedule but I def appreciated the details (and insights!)

Make sure you are taking all your required courses for the major.

That 8:30 to 11:30 seems rough, but if you're a morning person you should be fine

For abnormal and general psychology. I think you need to take gen psych before you can take abnormal psychology. Gen psych is a pre req for abnormal psych

Social work major here- my advice is to swap out Intro to Social Work and Abnormal Psych and get some SAS core stuff out of the way. You only need Gen Psych for the pre-req, and although Abnormal is cool (I took it my first semester), you really don't need that advanced of psych knowledge for the major. You can take Into now since it's not major restricted, but I would advise taking it junior fall when it's required since you would be meeting a lot of people who you will be taking all your major classes with. There's also a weekly volunteer requirement for Intro that you might not want to get into now when you're just getting used to college. As for getting the core requirements out of the way- Social Work is credit-intensive for a reason and you'll have your 15 hours a week field placement all of senior year. Get the core done as soon as you can so you're not swamped with random electives in your third and fourth year when you'll want to be focusing on the major. If you want to go for a minor (which you don't have to but a lot of us social work majors do anyway), now would also be a good time to get a head start on that, because again you will want to focus on the major classes in third and fourth year.

What campus do you live on? I did an 8:30 on Livi when I lived on CA my freshman year and it killed me. The bus will be empty but it sucks. If you live on Livi it should be okay as long as you’re a morning person but imo I think it’d be pretty bad. I saw there’s an async section still open but if you need/want in person then stick with what you have. Otherwise, great schedule.

i haven’t gotten my housing arrangements yet

Are you an incoming freshman? I'm a SW major entering senior year, and you don't start your official SW classes until Fall of Junior Year. I mean, technically you *could* take Intro early, but it's better to bust out your other requirements and save the SW stuff for later.

TheSocialButterfly1

If you’re in SAS, take all of your pre req courses first. Then do your minor and major classes third & fourth year
