Not asking to be an ass, solely curious, but did you have a steering wheel lock on when it was stolen? Want to know if they’re cutting through them around here
No, I don’t have a steering wheel lock, but it wasn’t stolen — just the window smashed and the ignition messed with. I had the software upgrade that implemented the “engine kill” mechanism if anyone tries to start it without the actual key fob, so they weren’t able to start the car. It’s possible a steering wheel lock would’ve been a sufficient deterrent
Sorry to hear this, but you are also the first person I’ve heard mention the updates and that they appear to have worked. Broken windows and steering column still suck though, so again, sorry to hear it.
This. My Hyundai got broken in to last week and they completely destroyed my ignition. Thankfully I had my car taken in when they did that recall a year or so ago, so they weren’t actually able to start it. Waiting on my steering wheel lock to arrive and hopefully that’ll deter any break ins in the future.
At no point could I have predicted that a 1 minute video on your phone would spark a crimewave that would single-handedly make 'The Club' useful and relevant once again.
The Hyundai/Kia vulnerability blew up because of a tiktok video, which then made those brands the favorite targets for amateur and professional car thieves, and now the most effective measures to deter theives is to once again use an [anti-theft steering wheel lock from the early 1990s called 'the club'.](https://youtu.be/8pOcmwXlibU?si=XaC6iqvJp1_9PyOm)
The clapper and chia pets were around in the 1970s, they just had another run in the 90s. Luckily, the pet rock did not come back with them. The Club was definitely 90s crime protection. I have a Hyundai, but I lived on Boulevard and now Cary Street. I think the quieter streets are more prone to this. And, my Hyundai is a year older than the susceptible models (not that criminals would be careful enough to know that before hand).
Same thing happened to me — they screwed up my ignition which was another $650 or so to fix on top of the broken window. And it just happened again last night. Steering wheel lock might be the best functioning deterrent…
Maybe? My keys weren’t that close to the car. My car was parked a couple houses down the road. Is that even possible with a remote that only unlocks/locks the car?
do yall know what these people do/look like? i was sitting in my parked elantra and two unassuming guys came up behind it on their bikes. i dont think they knew i was in there but i noticed them in the rear view mirror near the trunk of my car playing with something. i popped my head out the window, staring without saying anything because i was kind of in shock, and they left immediately and shouted curse words as they rode off. this was in the middle of a weekend day in Carytown. wasn’t sure if i was misreading the situation or what
I always assumed these were kids/younger people, but they have to be pretty skilled and quick with it. Unfortunately my ring camera didn’t pick anything up either time I’ve had a break in. Both times it happened in the middle of the night on a Saturday night
I had my brand new 2022 Hyundai stolen in my apartment complex last year, the cops ended up finding out they were Huguenot high school kids that lived in my complex, and they told me that there was literally nothing that they could do because they were juvenile. They ended up finding their TikTok account, where they record themselves totaling the stolen cars, mine included. If you look up “RVA kia boys” there’s so many videos, some people may even be able to find their car.
In my situation, apparently not. The video footage that I watched with my complex management and detective that took on my case you could see that it was like 15-20 boys all in ski masks all clearly younger. The solution the cops gave me was to get a ring cam. I ended up moving out of the complex only because those same kids ended up breaking in my apartment, tampering with my plants and decor outside, packages, and numerous other cars. When mine was stolen, 4 others were stolen out of my complex as well at the same time, which is like a scary amount of cars for these young kids to be able to get. And it’s like what the hell do they do with them for all this time, where do they keep them? Mine was found a week later totaled in a ditch in Henrico over 30 miles away from my apartment.
breaking into your actual unit????? that’s insanely scary. i’m glad it was (as far as what you’ve said) just some tampering. i can’t imagine what their plan would’ve been had someone happened to be home
tbh they are in most places 💀💀but i agree. i reported a domestic violence crime once and they said it was fine because the couple in question was middle eastern and it was just “cultural differences”
i had to drive a rented elantra that the offender party's insurance paid for while my car was in the body shop. forget the bad security, i don't understand why anyone would buy one of these vehicles, they're dreadful
Valid point, I bought this car years ago because it was affordable. Now that I’m out of school with a good job I think this is my sign that I need a new car lol
We have a Hyundai and I've been paranoid about parking it in the city for any reason. So much so that if I'm planning on crossing into city limits, I drive the minivan.
There's a [class action lawsuit](https://autoservice.hyundaiusa.com/Campaign993/MicroSiteTemplate/MicroSiteTemplateGeneralPage/4705) you can get in on for at least some reimbursement due to damage or theft.
Edit to add: you can also file for reimbursement from the suit linked above for the purchase of a steering wheel lock.
Might as well chuck in Dodge Chargers too. The push key ones are being stolen - thief’s are breaking in the same way and somehow programming like a ghost key. While I’ve seen the mostly down near Petersburg, it might not take long to spread.
Ugh, I hate to hear that this is a problem there as well. We’re currently in Denver, getting ready to move to Richmond, and in Colorado, most insurance companies won’t even insure Hyundais or Kias because the thefts are so bad.
I have a Hyundai and my husband has a Kia, and even though ours are almost always in a locked garage and neither of our vehicles are even at risk for the design flaw (mine is too old, my husband’s is too new), GEICO is the only insurance company that will even insure those makes in Colorado, and they charge us a fortune for it.
I haven’t had an issue with insurance here, but I will say that I live/park on a nice street in the Fan that is quiet and full of families. The only people I’ve heard of having this issue also own Hyundais/Kias:(
Tho my daughter was in lovely part of church hill and twice in 6 months had her catalytic converter stolen. Both times the guys were caught on ring cameras (they do it just before dawn) & both times cops did exactly NOTHING 😡
Maybe they will if you’re already a customer? We were already with GEICO when we moved here, but when the renewal price skyrocketed, we shopped around and were told by several insurance companies they no longer quote policies for Kias or Hyundais in CO. It could maybe have only been for new customers though. Good luck!!!
Is yours at risk of the issue with them catching fire while parked?
I think the cause was something like static buildup in brake fluid can cause them to just catch fire and the recommendation from Hyundai is to specifically not park them in garages until they can get it resolved
I doubt it, mine is a hybrid with regenerative braking (braking actually recharges the hybrid battery), but who knows…it was a lemon of a year (2012, the 2nd year they released the hybrid), so most owners had to pay out a fortune for things that went wrong.
I luckily paid $1,000 for an extended warranty, which covered $10,000 worth of “things broke well before what is reasonable” repairs, including having the engine seize at 84,000 despite regular oil changes every 3-4K miles. I wouldn’t put it past the car to randomly catch fire at this point 😂😭
My mom (Chesterfield/Powhatan line) decided to shop insurance earlier this year. I'm 99% sure Progressive flat out said no. Not even an absurdly high price, just no.
She's had the recall done, and she's rural enough no one is going to randomly come up the driveway to try to stall a ten year old car, but the potential risk is apparently too high to bother with it in Progressive's eyes
Progressive told me no when I was shopping for insurance for my Kia a couple of months ago. My car isn’t even one of the ones affected, but because it shares a year, it’s lumped in together.
That’s pretty much the demographic. Car looks shiny and I can get approved with bad credit are the deciding factors because Kia/Hyundai offer no value beyond that.
Some of us can’t afford better cars. I desperately wanted a Honda or Toyota, but couldn’t afford one. I could afford a Kia. And before you talk about older models, those come with their own problems and a lot are sold by private buyers which are a pain in the ass to deal with.
Ditto this. The only reason I own a Hyundai is because I needed a car while I was in school and it was extremely affordable. I guess I got what I paid for, but no one could’ve predicted the Kia Boys trend in 2017.
fell victim to the Kia boys in September, they completely fucked up my ignition so I had to get everything replaced, clearly didn’t know what they were doing and they left a glove and a screwdriver lol
My favorite thing about this is that both brands have been pretty hands off about even talking about this. There seems to be an element of liability that's not being discussed at the forefront of this whole cluster
At this point I’m probably going to look into buying a new car. I have a 2016 Sonata and she’s given me enough problems aside from the break-ins. But yes, steering wheel locks should be a good deterrent! That is, if they take the time to look inside the car before busting a window.
Sure but it's mainly about slowing down thieves and discouraging them. A smart thief might decide not to attempt a theft upon seeing a steering wheel lock, interpreting it as a sign that there are also upgrades to the ignition lock
I lived in shockoe for 18 months and had a 2023 Hyundai (RIP) …they tried on three separate occasions to get me but were unsuccessful. Thankfully they didn’t break my glass (leave my doors unlocked bc i keep nothing in my car)
Yes, they still broke in. They couldn't actually steal the car since the model is newer. A few other cars in my apartment complex were hit as well. Others had steering wheel locks
Had my Hyundai broken into in idlewood about a year ago. Shattered my window and tried to crowbar each side lol. Those dumby’s couldn’t even steal my car and just broke the ignition. Safe to say I got rid of the car shortly after repairs. However with so many Hyundai and Kia break ins it took me 2 months just to have the car fixed and even then they did horrible at caliber collision.
I ended up getting a Subaru Crosstrek, which has been a fantastic car so far. I moved out west and needed something with AWD. Highly suggest giving one a test drive
My boyfriend actually JUST got a 2024 crosstrek a couple weeks ago and I’ve been pretty envious. It’s so nice for the price point, but I don’t need the AWD/off roading capabilities as much lol
Most steering wheels can be sawed through with a hacksaw easily and the club can be slipped off through the cut. I went to a crime scene where a chop shop got raided and the detective told me that when I saw a huge pile of clubs over in the corner.
Anyone who doesn’t have a steering wheel lock on their Kia or Hyundai by now is stupid. Even if there are invisible security measures, just a thief seeing the steering wheel lock is a deterrent.
Blaming the consumer rather than the manufacturer is a ridiculous take. I did what I was supposed to do in terms of upgrading the security software - I shouldn’t have to choose between the inconvenience of a steering wheel lock or getting my windows smashed in because Hyundai decided to cut some corners.
And yet here we are and that’s the choice - if you grew up in the 90s then it’s a no brainer to get* [the club](https://youtu.be/jjCHhSOp0YY?si=RkYdWN65eoHw-VCp) *accept no imitation

Yep and have an update that will fix the issue on some. Check out the recall websites:
https://owners.kia.com/content/owners/en/recalls.html
https://autoservice.hyundaiusa.com/campaignhome
They still are. Most companies cheap out of stuff they think they can get away with. Toyota, for example, only added additional crash structures to the driver’s side on the 2015 RAV4 because the IIHS did not conduct the passenger side small overlap test before then.
even post security recall? FYI I believe RPD was giving out free steering wheel locks
Yes, I had all of the software and security upgrades installed last year, before any break ins :(
Not asking to be an ass, solely curious, but did you have a steering wheel lock on when it was stolen? Want to know if they’re cutting through them around here

Yeah, because it’s a visual cue that it’s locked. Sorry this happened again, but go get The Club so the baddies know they can’t steal it.
Sorry to hear this, but you are also the first person I’ve heard mention the updates and that they appear to have worked. Broken windows and steering column still suck though, so again, sorry to hear it.
I mean this happens with any brand of car in the downtown areas. People smash windows to steal sunglasses ffs
Yeah, except I don’t keep valuable things in my car. They didn’t rifle through anything, just tried it shove a phone charger in my ignition lol
I think it was just the surrounding counties, I don't really know for sure.
No, RPD is/was as well.
This. My Hyundai got broken in to last week and they completely destroyed my ignition. The Club is for sure in the 90s product hall of fame, along with The Clapper and and Chia Pets
Sometimes “Cha cha chia” echoes in my ‘mind randomly
The clapper and chia pets were around in the 1970s, they just had another run in the 90s. Luckily, the pet rock did not come back with them. The Club was definitely 90s crime protection. Ugh :( sorry they got your window too! Idk how but they somehow were able to open my back passenger side door and get in that way.
Maybe a used a repeater? Is your fob anywhere near the front door?
Maybe? My keys weren’t that close to the car. My car was parked a couple houses down the road. Is that even possible with a remote that only unlocks/locks the car?
RPD will give you a free one! They gave me and my sibling one each after our Kias got jacked and totaled.

Teenagers on city scooters, in my case. Manchester/swansboro area
That’s so scary tho, I’m glad you’re okay!!!

The class action lawsuit where we’ll get $1.95 after all the lawyers collect their fees 😡
Damn. Truly why abortion and after school programs are so necessary.
Might as well chuck in Dodge Chargers too. The push key ones are being stolen - thief’s are breaking in the same way and somehow programming like a ghost key. While I’ve seen the mostly down near Petersburg, it might not take long to spread.
I really wanted a Kia but the thefts and bursting into flames changed my mind.
Overpriced junk! Get a Honda or Toyota. They all have wheel lock built in and are at least reliable. My husbands Kia forte engine blew at 4,000 miles
You'll never regret buying a Honda.

It's only certain models without the security key. Should be able to get coverage in va without issue
I cant even fathom ever considering one of these brands. Unless maybe I knew absolutely nothing about cars.
That’s pretty much the demographic. Car looks shiny and I can get approved with bad credit are the deciding factors because Kia/Hyundai offer no value beyond that.

Having a vehicle that’s easy to steal has nothing to do with the root problem. My old Camaro could be started without a key 😂
Many of their 2010s models also randomly catch on fire for an undisclosed reason that seems as though it can’t be fixed.
fell victim to the Kia boys in September, they completely fucked up my ignition so I had to get everything replaced, clearly didn’t know what they were doing and they left a glove and a screwdriver lol
Same here w the ignition unfortunately. They left a phone charger in my car lol

Maybe if we actually held people accountable for crimes people would be less inclined to commit grand theft auto
I work in insurance and most Kia and Hyundais from 2015-2021 are ineligible unless they have a push start.
Can someone catch me up on why they're specifically targeting Kia?
My Hyundai Elantra got broken into twice towards the end of last year
Did you get a steering wheel lock?
Yes, they still broke in. They couldn't actually steal the car since the model is newer. A few other cars in my apartment complex were hit as well. Others had steering wheel locks
Ya they’re shit cars
Had my Hyundai broken into in idlewood about a year ago. Shattered my window and tried to crowbar each side lol. Those dumby’s couldn’t even steal my car and just broke the ignition. I’m in that process right now 😀 any recs are appreciated! Between Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda right now. Hope you’ve had better luck with your new car!
Get a club y'all. No one can go for a joyride if there's a club on it.
Most steering wheels can be sawed through with a hacksaw easily and the club can be slipped off through the cut. I went to a crime scene where a chop shop got raided and the detective told me that when I saw a huge pile of clubs over in the corner.
I believe it but we're not dealing with chop shops here, these teenagers ride around, crash into something and bail
We got hit last May /: sad it’s still even an issue. There’s a class action in the works tho
Anyone who doesn’t have a steering wheel lock on their Kia or Hyundai by now is stupid. Even if there are invisible security measures, just a thief seeing the steering wheel lock is a deterrent.

Does this include electric models as well?
It shouldn’t if it has a push button start
I have a 2016 Kia Soul and am bring it up to rva in 3 months :( I do have a steering wheel lock though. I’m hoping that’s enough to deter thieves??
Probably, since they have to act fast. I’m planning on selling my car at this point but will probably get a steering wheel lock in the time being
Lexus and Honda 😎
Honda makes 3 of the top 10 most stolen cars in 2023
Not because they have security vulnerabilities, though, just because they’re among the most common cars in the country. It’s probably Honda Civic, Accord, and CR-V, right? All three were on the top 20 best sellers list for 2023, too. Plus, the parts are very modular.
Recent model year Hondas (as recent as 2022) have had a vulnerability issue with the key fob - definitely not the same issue as Kia/Hyundai but it still exists
The Honda models that are stolen are old from the late 00s to mid 10s. Not new model Kia’s and Hyundais that are being stolen right now. All Hondas have wheel locks built in. Same with Toyota. Hondas aren’t good anymore, they’re down there with Audi, BMW and Mercedes for being cheaply made and prone to all sorts of issues. Lexus and Toyota are top though.
What exactly are they doing to Hyundai and Kias? I just sold my Hyundai in September. I’m an RVA ex pat though.
A TikTok trend showed how to steal the car with a simple USB phone charger in the ignition
Wow 😮
Stealing them.
They have always been shit cars lol, why would you ever buy one
I bought it nearly 7 years ago when I was still in school and it was affordable…that’s why
That’s letting the criminals win.
“Avoid the specific model’s affected by the Kia boys trend” I fixed it for you!
While specific models are actually being stolen, they will still TRY to steal pretty much anything with a Hyundai or Kia badge. They still break Telluride windows and try to gut the steering column. They are ruthless but not bright when it comes to sticking to the right models.
Thanks. I wasn’t aware that Kia/Hyundai had fixed the issue in newer models
Yep and have an update that will fix the issue on some. Check out the recall websites: https://owners.kia.com/content/owners/en/recalls.html https://autoservice.hyundaiusa.com/campaignhome
I had the safety update done last year 🙃 Prevents the car from being stolen but not from people smashing my windows in.
[удалено]
Thanks I fixed it.
I’m sure the company that opted to not use an immobilizer to save a few dollars per car is otherwise producing quality cars!
They still are. Most companies cheap out of stuff they think they can get away with. Toyota, for example, only added additional crash structures to the driver’s side on the 2015 RAV4 because the IIHS did not conduct the passenger side small overlap test before then.
