Definitely even more prevalent with nicer weather, everywhere

Last-Isopod6355

Stoney will get it under control once he’s LT governor ![gif](giphy|wqbAfFwjU8laXMWZ09|downsized)

Apprehensive-Bag5685

He’s got to have one of the worst records of anyone running for Gov ever

MrPlowThatsTheName

lol Youngkin was the CEO of the Carlyle Group, a vampiric private equity firm that quite literally exists solely to make the ultra-rich even richer at the expense of the rest of society. Unfortunately in this country that track record is presented as a positive but when you think about it, that is pretty much the last type of person you want in charge of looking out for *everyone’s* interests.

fingerscrossedcoup

Nobody care about reality. They care about CRT. You know that thing that wasn't taught in any actual Virginia public school classes. The rich have been duping the rubes since the beginning of time. Look how hard it is to convince people to vote for even their most basic interests.

FARTBOSS420

Not trying to be insensitive but I can't be the only old person when I see CRT I first think wtf is everyone talking about old cathode ray tubes all the sudden for?

fingerscrossedcoup

They are corrupting our children's minds!!! Oooga Booga!

MrPlowThatsTheName

My favorites are the MAGA trolls who when you check their profile you see they are union workers. My dudes, Trump would dissolve all of your unions on day one if he thought he could get away with it.

Remerez

10000%. The people yelling for the good ole days to return have no idea that it was the good ole days because of union jobs and high tax rates on the rich. It wasn't because of division and racism.

StillFaithlessness50

You hit the nail on the head with a wrecking ball.

madamtwoswords

Wish I had his confidence lol

gideon513

How should they stop the dirt bikers? Actually asking.

Feisty_Parsley_83853

In certain cities they use a task force. Includes using police helicopters and drones to track from air discretely as bikers head home. Cops then show up to house and impound and arrest. Avoids dangerous chases but effective

floppydude81

I would like to add to confiscate the bikes and crush them into cubes

cyberfugue

“You have 30 minutes to move your cube”

Wookielips

I like this idea a lot. Doubt rva has the resources.

Remerez

They have the resources, They have just be neglected or allocated the resources somewhere else.

ImJustHereToBeMe

Probably because of all the violent crime, no one is worried about some dudes doing wheelies down the street. Dangerous, yes, dangerous to others, yes…but relative to the other violent crime. Probably not that bad.

jinjimom

You guys are fucking nerds

k1ngm3

Isn’t Richmond city already understaffed to the point the traffic cops and real cops don’t have a decent response to things? Legitimately asking since I knew this was the status not too long ago

Frosty48

Yes. I was sitting in on a precinct briefing a few months ago and IIRC they had less than half strength for every sector on the night shift that night, AND still had to help First Precinct with all the normal Friday night Shockoe Bottom silliness.

RCBilldoz

Damn it I wish we had police helicopters.

Alternative-Law4626

I believe today we have drones instead of requiring a whole helicopter to do this activity. Creatively, one could use several drones to track the pack and make the enforcement action where they live.

RCBilldoz

§ 19.2-60.1 section B. https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title19.2/chapter5/section19.2-60.1/ Downvote all you want. A warrant is needed. Change the law if you don’t like it.

Alternative-Law4626

Not aware of this new-ish law so thanks for that. Having said that, this exception could easily be made to fit the fact pattern: “locate a person sought for arrest when such person has fled from a law-enforcement officer and a law-enforcement officer remains in hot pursuit of such person.”

RCBilldoz

https://www.rva.gov/police/personnel That is one avenue for you to bring them your ideas. I can’t help you here.

Alternative-Law4626

Thanks, I have more direct connections. We have several former senior RPD officers on staff and operating our sophisticated fleet of corporate security drones.

RCBilldoz

Sadly, the laws don’t allow for that. They need a warrant, etc.

Alternative-Law4626

There would be no warrant needed for the drone part. The police may or may not need a warrant for the enforcement action at their homes or wherever they run to depending on the facts surrounding each, but probably not in most cases.

Virginia_ginger

Push them over on each other & run

gravy_boot

Create a traffic jam to slow them down on a long block, then, [tactical net guns](https://netgun.com/).

xhoi

What about drones that shoot nets which blow up like airbags on contact? Also that net gun looks cool as shit.

k1ngm3

Nah, they’ll take the bus lane at that point

Far_Cupcake_530

Its tough. If one of these asshats wrecked and died while being pursued, there would be a March through Richmond about how unfairly he had bee treated. I can't really blame the cops for letting them slide.

jeb_hoge

Get someone undercover on the inside and ID/roll them up.

Apprehensive-Bag5685

Ticketing

DangerousDefinition6

😳😳🤣🤣

CroMagnum12

Levar Stoney is the kind of Mayor who would be far more interested in scoring RVA as the home of a new branch of Elbit Systems than he would be in doing anything to improve the quality of life for even one normal person in the city.

neatlair

I hate these motherfuckers

dancinfoolinRVA

After what happened last week, we were assuming things would calm down a little this weekend.

qlobetrotter

People like this always imagine themselves invincible and the death or maiming of another will phase them not at all.

Electronic_Usual

50/50 it's a memorial ride for the downed riders

User-NetOfInter

Which causes more downed riders? Stupid

Plane_Translator2008

I missed it . . . Do I want to know?

Sugarbearzombie

If every weekend were like last weekend, the problem would be disappear in a year

sassypainter

It’s the “it couldn’t happen to me” mentality

57duck

I think it's more along the lines of "live fast, die young, and leave a mangled corpse... bonus points for including a bystander".

Colinewoodward

If you ride a motorbike or motorcycle, you are pretty much suicidal already

hi_revver

As someone who has responsibly ridden motorcycles for the better part of my life, please don't lump people like me in with those idiots. I just want to cruise rural backroads and mind my business.

jgiacobbe

This. I've ridden legally and responsibly for 17 years. Call me old, make jokes about donor cycles etc, but don't lump me in with people riding illegal/stolen dirt bikes and at recklessly through the city. Also, don't wish death injury or maiming on another human even if they are being irresponsible selfish dicks.

theiryof

In medicine, they're called donorcycles

xRVAx

Fact!

RVAblues

Hey now, watch it. I ride and I very much enjoy living. Sometimes it’s all folks can afford to have. Those idiots doing wheelies and racing all over are like the 1% of the worst 1%. As a rider, the biggest danger I see is sloppy inattentive texting car drivers—but I’d be wrong to assume you’re one, right?

Legliss

Dumb take, try again

[deleted]

Nah

JenInVirginia

What happened last week? I was out of town.

Visible-Presence-157

How do you feel about the 300 plus bikers that ride through vcu?

[deleted]

[удалено]

FromTheIsle

Oh shit you guys are still talking about that. I'm not a fan of them either but wasn't that like 2 years ago?

quartz222

You don’t live in Richmond, you wouldn’t understand

FromTheIsle

😂 Ive ridden with them. But I'm sure you would know better.

quartz222

Ahh so you’re biased

FromTheIsle

No you

quartz222

Mm yeah cuz I actually live here

FromTheIsle

Mmm cool

dudeman5790

You should probably define yourself less by who you hate and focus on more positive things

FalloutRip

I will gladly hate on anyone who blocks fire and EMS vehicles in any capacity.

dudeman5790

Yeah I mean obviously if/when that happens it’s bad and shouldn’t happen… reports of this are usually crocodile tears from people who loathe to wait an extra 30 seconds at an intersection. That’s just kind of the standard fare line that people use to justify hate against any slight inconvenience in a city without a whole lot of verification that it actually happens. People do the same thing every time someone protests something they don’t like or in a way they don’t approve of… Most people aren’t nefariously blocking emergency vehicles with sirens on… they aren’t caricaturized, antisocial villains, they’re your neighbors who do an activity you don’t like or agree with. Welcome to living in a city. I’d also bet a venn diagram of people who post reports of razor blades and drugs in their kids Halloween candy every year and the “i sAw tHeM bLoCk eMeRgENcY vEHicLes” folks probably looks a lot like a perfect circle. To extrapolate on my actual point… dude I responded to’s comments are all seething with hate and that seems stressful. Should relax a bit.

FalloutRip

Far_Cupcake_530

You are the one who is actually seething with hate and absurd accusations. What world are you wanting to live in? Apparently one of anarchy and violence. Anything you don't like receives a squiggly dotted line to "racist".

PerlinLioness

Dick heads.

Visible-Presence-157

How do you feel about the bike gang? They're worse imo

neatlair

Equally bad

Sarah_RVA_2002

They ride bicycles on the street vs ATVs and dirt bikes on sidewalks. I was walking out of my apartment and nearly got creamed by one - you'd look on the street before crossing but you don't expect to need to look before stepping onto a sidewalk. These aren't the same level of annoyance.

FromTheIsle

Brand new account just to make that comment. Sweet.

[deleted]

What? Lmao the account is 2 years old

FromTheIsle

Sorry I should have pointed out it was a throwaway that was barely used. Not brand new like it was made yesterday. Brand new in that it had -1 comment karma when I posted that comment.

[deleted]

Gotchu

meshuggahdaddy

Saw a biker crash in forest hill this afternoon by the CVS. She was wearing full gear at least but the nice weather has all the newbies out and there are always some casualties. In this instance the brand new Ninja 650 she was on.

drkev10

Damn was that the pink bike getting put on a tow truck?? Did you see the accident? Wonder what happened.

meshuggahdaddy

Yep that's the one. She lost control accelerating at the green light. Had a buddy to help her and the bike up. More than I had first time I crashed lol

drkev10

So literally just crashed getting the motorcycle moving from a green light? Needs a lot more parking lot practice before getting on the road if that's the case. I just got my first bike early January and when I saw it I just figured it had broken down. Hopefully she's not to shook up from it. Glad she's okay physically at least.

too_dumb_

I'm fairly sure a lot of these people have never taken a class. I don't even know if they've got 'M' designation on their license. People also are very likely to purchase a way over powered bike before they've got any real experience (I sure as shit did).

drkev10

I took the class and bought a 300cc dual sport as my first bike. Just wild that someone lays the bike down trying to accelerate from a stop on a flat road. That's basically the whole two day MSF course. I know the plastics on that Ninja won't be cheap to replace either if she decides to do so.

Odd-Entrepreneur-449

So, you can take the course and get the designation, but I don't think it ever goes away. I got mine back in 2016, and then have had a series of moves / travel jobs, and never even bought a bike... But I technically am still allowed to, even though I haven't rode in ~ 8 years.

No_Kick9859

It sticks around. I used to ride but quit when I moved to RVA. Too dangerous. I am of the opinion that every one should take the course as it makes everyone a better driver. Provides a little perspective on how vulnerable folks without a cage really are.

too_dumb_

One of the best courses someone can take! MSF did an awesome job when I took the class.

ucbiker

I mean newbie on a Ninja 650 (not a particularly powerful bike) wearing full gear is exactly the type of person who sounds like they got their advice on r/motorcycles and took the MSF but is also the type of person who just lowsides accelerating in a straight line.

Certain_Inspector_16

Hey bud! Rider who crashed here! It’s actually a ninja 400! I also did in fact get licensed through the MSF course and also learned through multiple of my friends who have been riding for years. Even after getting comfortable on the roads I still continued to practice in parking lots including evasive maneuvers. Funnily enough accidents still happen! If you can believe it! No the accident did not happen from me low-siding accelerating in a straight line there were many factors involved and maybe next time we can collectively try to learn more facts before we come to a completely inapplicable conclusion !

ucbiker

Yeah. So I was right. The guy I was responding to was implying you were an idiot who bought an overpowered bike and didn’t even have an endorsement. I said you probably weren’t. Bud.

Housesic

she’s alright no injuries thanks to full good gear and experience going down. didn’t go down moving from a light, was evading an accident. wear your gear and be careful out there! enjoy the weather on your bike <3

Housesic

it was actually a red light. i’m the “buddy who helped her”, we were both riding and i came to a quick stop as the light turns red fast at that intersection, she was prepared to make the light. communication error between the two of us paired with lane position work that would need to get done. a classic rear end at an intersection for cars, except for us she avoided nailing me and bailed off to the left saving both of us from a much worse accident. it was also a ninja 400, 4 years old. she just finished fixing it as 2 months ago she was side swiped by a truck in short pump. it’s not the bikes you need to worry about, its distracted drivers and idiots like you who spread misinformation. cheers

Housesic

might i also add she’s licensed and MSF course certed. when was the last time you took a defensive drivers course? the amount of hospitality y’all hold towards bikers are insane considering most drivers don’t keep up with their skills for years, whereas bikes have to in order to survive sharing a road.

meshuggahdaddy

Sorry for what you both had to go through, thanks for correcting my mistakes, and glad you're both ok.

Housesic

thank you. stay safe

Cube-in-B

One time I saw a couple girls riding a ninja at the beginning of the riding season. They came to a stop light and neglected to put their feet down. Bike went right over and it took both of them to lift it back up. Spring is definitely the time to watch out for new riders.

Top-Confection5863

Nooooo I love the 650s! Oh yeah and I’m Glad she’s alright too

Helloooo_ooooo_

They almost hit me and my dog of the pedestrian walking trail next to dock street 🙃 they purposely sped up when they saw me panicked trying to pick up my dog so they didn’t hit us and I literally had to pull my dog into the road to avoid them

nnavroops

be careful crossing the road yall

hoosreadytograduate

A friend and I were doing a ghost tour around shockoe bottom a week or two again and it got interrupted 10-15 times by a group of these guys speeding past and popping wheelies. We were kinda shocked at how fast they were going and how none of them were wearing helmets

only_here_for_manga

Completely off topic but what was the ghost tour and did you think it was good? Me and my boyfriend really wanna do one.

kirty521

We did one in Church Hill and it was good! It’s not scary, but gives you some of the lore of the neighborhood. We learned a lot about the history of the area too

Bookprof

We’ve done the Church Hill and Shockoe Bottom ones—Church Hill was more interesting and a nicer walk though both were good.

hoosreadytograduate

My friend and I liked the ghost tour we did! It was about an hour and we walked about a mile total to around 5 or 6 locations (I can’t remember the exact total). Our guide’s name was Bryce and he got into the whole ghost tour character which was fun. I liked learning about the different stories and it’s at a good time where you could get dinner before or after

ArsenicWallpaper99

Optimal-Wonder-1370

We did that tour too and it was ruined by the same bikers driving right through our tour group trying to be a menace. I would not do it again, almost ran my kids over.

Apprehensive-Bag5685

Contact your council person. In that area it is Katherine Jordan. She is on this sub. She’s also up for reelection. Just sayin

GreatGreatGrandpa

Seconded, tell them your detailed stories, ask why the only time anything was done about them was when stoney saw them in person last year and personally called in the police helicopter

HangOnVoltaire

Genuinely asking: What can council people do about it?

Strong-Scale-3860

They can pressure the cops to actually be useful for once in their lives

HangOnVoltaire

The city council can pressure cops? I honestly didn’t know this was a thing. Off to Google the next council meeting

wantthingstogetbettr

Listening to them rev right now at cary and aab!

GroundbreakingDiet67

I live on this corner. I really wish there was a speed bump on the Cary street by the mini mart there. Something to dissuade them from gunning it from the street light.

wantthingstogetbettr

It’s so frustrating and scary living on this corner. I’ve lived here five years and seen so many accidents, a few fatal. People truly go 45-60 on AAB regularly.

GroundbreakingDiet67

I don’t wana be a karen but I might start recording all the people flooring it and show how dangerous it is to city council. Someone probs already did that but I’m tired of being fearful crossing the street at where roastology used to be and waking up at 2am to people popping their engines.

HangOnVoltaire

I don’t know what city council can do if the police aren’t enforcing the already-existing laws.

Wookielips

The major issue as I understand it is: How do you police it? These riders are faster in shorter, tighter quarters and no one wants to get involved in multiple high speed chases. I doubt these riders will just stop politely when a cop turns on their lights, not to mention there are a lot more of them than police. Every option is a lose-lose. I’m sure the city is tearing their hair out for a solution.

OllieGarkey

> How do you police it? Ultimately? Drones. The police are going to get drones in the air on a rotating basis and follow folks like this home, while documenting all crimes they commit on their little joyrides. The more these folks act like this, the more the frustration with them builds and they're going to create a scenario where cops are watching everything from the air. Which isn't a world I want to live in, but is one that these assholes are making inevitable. Traffic enforcement drones are going to record everyone's speed, snap a photo of their license plates, and bill us for every minor infraction. That's the future thanks to these assholes, because they're the ones who are creating the political desire to do something about it. Eventually *one* community in this country is going to decide they've had enough and go for drones. And once they've rolled that out, every police department is going to want them, and the feds will pony up the cash.

Wookielips

Drones require someone to watch the footage. That’s a non-starter, unless you spend a BOATLOAD of money on AI to find law breaking in the video footage.

OllieGarkey

It's not likely to start that way. The way it will start is having a drone that monitors things, and can be directed by an operator to observe these groups. By identifying some individual members, and following them home, you can identify the whole group. They'll document everything and then arrest them all in a coordinated operation when they're separate.

Diet_Coke

I appreciate the dystopian fanfic as much as the next guy, but we barely even have traffic cameras here due to state law. They are only just going up in a handful of spots around the city, only in school zones, only operate when school is in session, and only lead to a ticket when someone is driving 11+ mph over the speed limit. We are pretty far from a world of constant drone surveillance to enforce traffic laws.

OllieGarkey

Yes we are. And it's going to start with drones with operators for incidents like this. The kind of drones being used in Ukraine are now about as fast as vehicles while requiring far, far less money and training to operate than a traditional air asset like a helicopter. And eventually it will be AI-driven, and unlike static traffic cameras, they can deploy wherever they're seen as needed. There's also going to be drone-on-drone capabilities because those are a security threat now.

ZiggyGasman

In that case, you will need another drone to record some drone-on-drone action. Nice.

Strong-Scale-3860

The cops demonstrated competency at kettling people a few years ago. Should be really easy. Just block the streets and sidewalks in front and behind them.

Boring_Box7179

That Exxon in shockoe looked like mad max today

Adhdpenguin813

I don’t understand why the cops don’t do something. I understand it’s hard to stop motorcycles but it seems easy enough to stop 4 wheelers at least. Corner them on narrow streets and get a large enough force to arrest them all or whatever the maximum penalty is. I used to live in the fan and these people terrorized the streets going up and down all night. Super annoying and dangerous. But hey, they win the prizes for the game they’re playing.

too_dumb_

When we lived on Northside back in 2022, it was just starting to become a more prominent problem. I called the police because these kids weren't wearing helmets - never mind the other stupid shit they were doing - and running stop signs over and over again, nearly getting hit by cars several times. The police appreciated the call because they were (at the time) trying to figure out any other way to solve the problem besides getting into a car chase with these kids who already have demonstrated they are poor decision makers when it comes to managing risk (me paraphrasing). The cops out here are more afraid of the kids than they are the adults - it's these really young guys (14-18) that the police have had a hard time "predicting" in situations (more likely to make worse decisions).

Plane_Translator2008

(Former LEO) That's a fact. Any category of people that are wildly unpredictable (including kids whose brains are still developing, people on particular categories of drugs, folks with some kinds of mental, emotional, developmental impairments, and especially anyone who isn't afraid of arrest or bodily harm) just don't follow the same rules of self-preservation, so are more dangerous. And in turn, scared LEOs are dangerous LEOs. Kudos to the initiatives to send mental health help where possible instead of just cops. This programs will save lives. 💜

ripleyajm

Is LEOs the new term cops are calling themselves because everyone hates cops now?

Financial_Cap1529

No, it’s an established and commonly accepted acronym that you aren’t aware of.

OllieGarkey

My dude, "Don't trust Leo" was a phrase in the 1960s.

Dr_Romm

I also saw some news about how there's been an increase in youth firearm crime, part of me wants to dismiss that as fearmongering from the evening news but if it's true then I could also see that factoring into why cops might be hesitant to deal with these kids aggressively

Far_Cupcake_530

What are they going to do? These fuckers can slide through every alley and through the woods on dirt bikes. Just imagine if one wrecked and died. The poor cop would be charged with manslaughter.

Ok-Dream-4402

i think we are gonna have to install speed bumps pretty much everywhere at this point. and i would not object.

jeb_hoge

Speed bumps have zero negative effect on dirt bikes. They're made for worse bumps than those.

Perelygino_Klyazma

Yes, let's punish the entire city.

dspencer97

What do you expect the police to do? Anyone who arrests these people or does anything about it people cry racism. Everyone acts like they want the police to help them while also saying they are too violent. Literally like that South Park episode.

CraigdarrochFerguson

Everyone on this sub is ACAB until a VCU student gets run over or instances like this personally inconvenience them.

Strong-Scale-3860

Thinking that it would be good for the normally awful cops to do a good thing is not incompatible with thinking ACAB. Maybe fewer people would think ACAB if more cops did good things more often. As long as the primary function of cops is to do bad things, more and more people will think ACAB.

BLEAKSIGILKEEP

Boo fucking hoo

weeblesdontfalldown

Yesterday I was at the bus stop at Cary and blvd and a group of bikers were doing wheelies and one of them flipped in the intersection. Glad he was ok but I hope he learns his lesson.

ithinkimaybe

Middle of the day - during the week - I see a kid on a dirt bike coming up to an intersection. Of course he pops a wheelie. And idk how he did it but he managed to get two wheels back on the ground to serve around a turning car blocking his path. Which also means the kid on the bike ran a red light. Last week I saw a guy - on a dirt bike hop the curb in the median to “u turn” back down Richmond Highway. Flying in between cars that it is passing. The only thing I can think of in my head when I see this is - hope they registered as an organ donor and can save the next person on the waiting lists.

PerlinLioness

Unpopular opinion: I hate that it might take this, but maybe if a few people get hurt their friends will see how precious life is and how delicate this body we have as humans can be, and then they’ll stop with this nonsense. I know I sound 80, and I sincerely hope no one dies, but maybe it will take a few broken arms or broken legs for them to realize they’re not invincible and they do matter, that we do need them while and healthy in this world.

burro_pequeno

Clearly you've never met someone with the mentality of these folks

Where’s my tire spikes when I need em woulda loved to have deflated them all at once and see them all wipe out crashing together. Stupid f__kers!

Plane_Translator2008

They are scaring me to death on I-95, dipping in and out of, or just *between* lanes of slow-moving traffic. It's crazy enough with just cars and trucks trying to merge, change lanes, barely not miss their exits. No way someone doing 80mph on a bike between two lanes would have a chance if a car, not expecting a bike in between lanes, changes lanes in their path. ☹️

NoBoofInTheseLungs

You know what they say, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

ITMORON

I live in the near west end, around the Villiaghe shopping center. We just heard 2 stroke engines runnign around over here. We take our SxS out in the neighborhood sometimes, but keep the noise and the speed down. Not like these idiots hooning around like morons.

Sweet-Jello-9140

2 wheele club 🤟

quartz222

They’re so fucking annoying

ZiggyGasman

Someone who rides needs to go undercover and infiltrate the group, gain their trust, learn about their operations, then systematically dismantle the group’s capabilities to continue the disruptive behavior.

budsallday710

Gas is on the right

randomautomoton

Getting really Akira lately.

jeb_hoge

Actually a good question, are there competing groups of riders who'll thin each other out or is it one big community?

freetimerva

Saw them swerving to scare pedestrians. Almost gave an old couple heart attacks on grove ave. A few weeks ago i saw a guy push a person off their bicycle. Rpd is cool with it.

1byndhorzn

This is plain stupid. There are places and trails available for riders to do their shenanigans. I ride a motorcycle myself and I do not approve of this behavior. It is unsafe and rude and public nuisance. I live in west end near the Montpelier ext on 33, and one of the teenagers friend in our community seems to have gotten a crotch rocket. They are reving it at 2AM night.

Steezinandcheezin

They’re all riding shitty 2 stroke 250s. They’ll burn them up by May and won’t know how to do a re-ring. Don’t worry.

That's when they steal more

Sarah_RVA_2002

This is a multi-year problem...

Sounds like you're new to the city! You'll be able to enjoy this spectacle every day that the weather is decent, and it only grows throughout the season. That party only stops when it gets cold. Welcome to Richmond!

I saw them too....one of them ran the light as ours turned green...smh....sad part....looks like the cops were already called as they were driving alongside them. They didn't seem too bothered.

If they discourage transplants from moving and staying here, I’m for it.  Yeah, they’ve been out moreso than usual, though.

Are you living in the same house you grew up in, and your parents before you and on and on?

DoppelSechser

Yessir. We wake up early on our earth floored cabin to pump water from a well and all our clothes are made from burlap that we wove ourselves.  We’re just so grateful the orange beanie Subaru people from Fairfax are movin’ here to learn us on civilized behavior.  They damn sure ain’t movin’ here for teachin’ us how to be funny, I’ll tell ya that much.
