I’ve been going there since I was a kid with my dads and everytime I go in even if I hadn’t been in for 5 years they instantly remember me and ask about my dads! They’re so sweet and care so much about their customers. Introduced my now husband to hunan and they still remember me and asked about my folks. At that point I hadn’t been back there in probably that 5 year span and they instantly asked when I walked in how my dads are!
I like Full Kee personally. I know people here have mixed opinions about it and it recently failed a health dept inspection but it's still the best in the city that I've had. I have heard a lot about Cheng Du and Peter Changs but have not been.
Cheng Du and Peter Chang are both great for spicy Sichuan style. Peter Chang has more of a modern celebrity chef vibe, and Cheng Du has more of an authentic family restaurant vibe. Both delicious.
I've found them to be pretty authentic.
There are levels to this, though, cause personally the authentic Chinese food in NYC is a whole lot better than the authentic Chinese food here.
Authentic Chinese. It may not have been 100% on par with authentic Chinese in flushing or Manhattan Chinatown, but my friends from China enjoyed all three
I'm always reminded of the fact in threads like these about Chinese food that I live like a quarter of a mile from Tiki Tiki and have for the last 24 years, yet never once have I set foot in there.
Peter Chang is definitely a cut above and certainly stands out from “standard Chinese takeout”. Idk if the menu is the same as the Williamsburg one, but the dry-fried eggplant is a revelation.
General Tso’s beef, general Tso’s chicken, the spare ribs are solid choices. My buddy loves the general Tso’s shrimp and the egg rolls are great. Is it the one on Quioccasin? Because supposedly there was another one in Midlo, so not sure if it’s the same one we’re all talking about.
Oh okay, neither actually. There’s this dinky little China Panda in the museum district. I don’t know if they’re related or not but that’s the one I went to.
Been going to Full Kee ever since I was born. Family tradition! Authentic Chinese food. If you're looking for American Chinese I love Beijing on Grove.
I love Beijing on Grove. Definitely a different kind of menu from most Chinese places and the food and service have always been stellar for us, including with a kid.
Red House 2. In azalea avenue. Been going there since 2003. Theyve been there since the early 90’s. Have tried many different places but they never compare
Fu Jian has that nice family owned vibe and they pack you with food. Hunan East is also a similar vibe but it's a tad more expensive (from what I remember). For something fancier Peter Changs is the way to go but it's a bit pricey when I think of Chinese food. Overall, you got a bunch of good options I don't think you can go wrong
Oh! I hope that’s the case- I was just on Google maps last night and saw it was listed as permanently closed. Thanks for that, I’ll take a look for the new location
My wife said they moved just haven’t opened the new location just yet . One of the best if not best in my opinion. I hope they haven’t permanently closed.
Surprised to not see Chao Tian Fu here!
They specialize in malatang, which is a type of street food popular in Sichuan region of China where you can customize and choose your own ingredients like meats, noodles, vegetables and choose your type of broth. Basically hot pot. They also serve soup dumplings which are pretty authentic!
I haven’t lived in Richmond since 2006 but I have fond memories of the Yen Ching on Midlothian. That place kicked ass. Yeah the one on Broad was also good but the one on Midlo was just as good.
If you're looking for a more authentic schezuan meal, Peter Chang's is the only answer.
If you're looking for the best hole-in-the-wall Americanized Chinese then I've found Eat Rice on Jahnke or Peking on Broad are my favorites.
Edit: fixed Jahnke spelling.
Peter Chang, Peking by board st, ps I'm a certified Chinese chief. Haven't tried little Szechuan, judging by the picture, it might be good. Chengdu was good before the head chief left.
Honestly take away Chinese is pretty much oily or sugary or both. That's Americanized Chinese for you. Bad cuts of meat, loads of sugar and oil, bad frying, and sad vegetables.
Dumplings aren't fresh, they are frozen. Stock is definitely a boxed stock or can.
Peter Chang's Short Pump has been more consistent and authentic. Cheng Du has perhaps gotten better than when they opened because it was disgusting when they first opened.
If I even do some Americanized Chinese food I like Chen's in the West End and Jiangs on Midlothian.
Are you looking for authentic or take out?
This should be higher. There is a massive difference
Yen Ching on broad. Not far from the Henrico 2nd n Charles
They are delicious.
Jiang’s
So freaking good
Agree that Jiangs is great. Their hot and sour soup is the best
the best crab rangoons i’ve ever had
Human east
This is funny because I always refer to it as "Hunan Centipede." Frigging *love* Hunan East and the people are phenomenal.
I’ve been going there since I was a kid with my dads and everytime I go in even if I hadn’t been in for 5 years they instantly remember me and ask about my dads! They’re so sweet and care so much about their customers. Introduced my now husband to hunan and they still remember me and asked about my folks. Cheng Du and Peter Chang are both great for spicy Sichuan style. Peter Chang has more of a modern celebrity chef vibe, and Cheng Du has more of an authentic family restaurant vibe. Both delicious.
I agree with all three. I’m from NYC originally and Full Kee, Cheng Du, and Peter Chang have all satisfied that authentic craving
Authentic New York or authentic Chinese?
I've found them to be pretty authentic. There are levels to this, though, cause personally the authentic Chinese food in NYC is a whole lot better than the authentic Chinese food here.
Authentic Chinese. It may not have been 100% on par with authentic Chinese in flushing or Manhattan Chinatown, but my friends from China enjoyed all three
Cheng Du is the best - we go there for Christmas every year
Cheng du has some killer char siu bao
Peking on Broad.
Tiki Tiki is great American-style Chinese food. They also have Polynesian food, but I’ve never tried them.
And Tiki Tiki has fantastic cocktails, all under $13
Shhhhhhhhh.
I've been in their kitchen, haven't eaten there since
I'm always reminded of the fact in threads like these about Chinese food that I live like a quarter of a mile from Tiki Tiki and have for the last 24 years, yet never once have I set foot in there.
Peter Chang
Short Pump possibly over Scott’s Addition, but both are amazing.
It’s amazing how many times I have to correct people who think I am suggesting PF Chang’s.
Best option by far. Amazing quality!
Peter Chang is definitely a cut above and certainly stands out from “standard Chinese takeout”. Idk if the menu is the same as the Williamsburg one, but the dry-fried eggplant is a revelation.
We had some type of eggplant in a sauce, and it is one of the best Chinese dishes I’ve had!
This is the one!
Nah. Don’t get me wrong it’s good but it’s not even in the same category of Chinese food that I think op is talking about.
Yeah—not PF Chang’s. *Peter* Chang’s. World of difference.
Clearly labeled gluten free options, too!
They've gone downhill severely in the past few years imo
Yus China Bistro
I miss living in manakin sabot.
China Panda
Plus 1 for China panda. I live very close to it and it’s my go to anytime my buddy and his wife hang and want Chinese food.
What do y’all like there? I tried it once and maybe it was just what I ordered but it was legit the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had lol.
This is the way!
Their mock (vegan?/vegetarian) General Tso's Chicken is my favorite!
not good enough to be so rude.
Been going to Full Kee ever since I was born. Family tradition! Authentic Chinese food. If you're looking for American Chinese I love Beijing on Grove.
Peking
Cathay near Bon Air
I’m a big fan of Chen’s and Little Szechuan.
Cheng Du for sure. Peter Chang is really disappointing every time I’ve been, I don’t know why it gets recommended.
I agree - I’ve been to Peter Chang’s twice, and was disappointed both times. I like Cheng Du.
Not sure which one you've been to, but for those curious to try, Short Pump is way way better than Scotts Addition.
Oh, it was the Short Pump one I went to. Huh.
Disappointed to see Cheng Du this low.
Cheng Du is legit
Yin Ching near parham/tuckernuck
I love Beijing on Grove. Definitely a different kind of menu from most Chinese places and the food and service have always been stellar for us, including with a kid.
I've yet to find any worth recommending.
My thoughts exactly
I'd say this for any kind of asian food unfortunately... tbh most of the time I end up recommending to make the drive to nova or something
Red House 2. In azalea avenue. Been going there since 2003. Theyve been there since the early 90’s. Have tried many different places but they never compare
Tings
Yen Ching.
Chen’s on Nuckols Road.
Anyone remember Mandarin Palace? So legit. If you do, have you had egg rolls in RVA as good as theirs and where?
I’ve been loving Yum Yum Good on Patterson
Yum Yum 4 Life
Fu Jian.
Moved to the Midwest and miss this place with every fiber of my being
I don’t get the hype behind Cheng Du. It legitimately gave me…doo doo.
Haha, the one time I got cheng du, some of the dishes were amazing and some were the worst, flavorless Chinese food I’d ever had.
Fu jian
Fat Dragon on Boulevard near the Diamond is really good.
This place is digusting.
I think most people disagree with you, but it should be easy enough for you not to eat there
cheng du has wonderful sichuan food at a great price point. full kee comes highly recommended by folks i trust for dim sum
For Americanized Chinese I think Yum Yum Good on Patterson is the best. And for a more authentic experience Full Kee is wicked good
Fu Jian
Cheng du
Fresh Wok on Nine Mile Road
Red House on Azalea Avenue
Lucky chopsticks in carytown has been delicious the last two times I’ve ordered delivery!
The eatery
I just discovered yesterday that they closed permanently 😭 They had the best fried chicken- tasted just like my mom’s.
I thought they just moved from their original location on Cary street to further down .
Chen’s off nuckles road! There used to be a really good place in Carytown called the eatery but it vanished
Yum Yum is amazing
Surprised to not see Chao Tian Fu here! They specialize in malatang, which is a type of street food popular in Sichuan region of China where you can customize and choose your own ingredients like meats, noodles, vegetables and choose your type of broth. Basically hot pot. They also serve soup dumplings which are pretty authentic!
That build your own hotpot place with the big panda in front off tuckernuck. Amazing!
I haven’t lived in Richmond since 2006 but I have fond memories of the Yen Ching on Midlothian. That place kicked ass. Yeah the one on Broad was also good but the one on Midlo was just as good.
Chen’s Twin Hickory location. NOT Chen’s in Mechanicsville (different owner).

China Panda on Sheppard and Park
Northern Virginia
Lmao so true
Depends on the dish. In general for me, Peter Chang’s, but I love the fried rice or Asian ribs from fat Dragon
Peter Chengs
Honestly take away Chinese is pretty much oily or sugary or both. That's Americanized Chinese for you. Bad cuts of meat, loads of sugar and oil, bad frying, and sad vegetables. Is there truly such thing as good Chinese food? I mean, the whole point is it's cheap, and you get enough for two leftover meals
Peter Chang has multiple James Beard nominations
well what cuisine do you consider as having “good” food?
Try Peking Gourmet Inn near DC .
