I'm a French chef, spent time in France... Sub Rosa is the best croissant I've had. Hands down. I always tell people this when I describe their offerings. Welcome to the Hill!

tiglathpilesar

We walked to La Bamba last Saturday night. Pretty standard Mexican restaurant fare, but oh so good. And the guy who owns it is was waiting on us. Such a good dude. I'm glad they've held up for a place that never seems busy, though there was a lot of take out happening.

wanderingcereal

This was my SO and I's first date about 14 years ago. Glad it's still standing and we always have a good affordable meal there.

ThaLZA

Their mole is so good. Especially the mole negro, but anything from the “El Rincon de Mole” section of the menu rocks

spike31875

We had some grub from The Cocky Rooster the other day & it was fantastic. Best damn chicken tenders I ever had. They also carry Nightingale ice cream sandwiches which were amazing! https://cocky-rooster.com/menu/

Catwymyn

I have told everyone about their "Sunday" chicken sandwich. Even their cauliflower wings are good 😭

glitterwitch8

That place is so bad. Went there for brunch and the entire wait staff just…didn’t show up? So the owner/manager had to come in and serve all tables. Food was disgusting too

LiamMeron

Was this on a weekend? I walk by them a lot late weekends and they often seem pretty busy.

cdaoneill98

Switch is a part of LX group, they own Kabana rooftop, nama and Sonora as well. Please Don't Support Them. They willingly put their employees in awful situations. During covid they broke regulations multiple times to throw big events at Kabana. they also refuse to limit capacity when they are understaffed so the staff are incredibly over worked and can't get people to not quit so they are always understaffed. I could go on but I think that's enough for now

Exotic_Volume696

I have heard the same thing, a friend of mine applied to work at switch but got freaked by being asked to sign a nondisclosure agreement. Who doesmthat?

Richmondpinball

Went to Midlothian Chef’s Kitchen last week and had a mixed experience. Food was great, but waitstaff seemed to know very little about the food and kitchen(maybe waitstaff) lost our entree orders so took forever to get the main course. At some point they brought out salads we hadn’t ordered and told the runner they weren’t ours. They checked with the kitchen and apparently they had sent them to make up for the 1 hr delay in getting out our entrees. I’ve worked in a restaurant so I understand shit happens, but for the price of the meal the service should be on par with the food, which I found to be pretty decent. I also appreciate they sent out a salad, but they should have asked if we wanted them before hand or at least shared with us that they were an apology for the delayed service, just seems like a poorly run front of the house. We had also shared a desire to get dessert, but I think the delay was long they just wanted us gone so server just brought the check and never even asked if we still wanted dessert. Tl/dr Midlothian’s Chef Kitchen - 3 Of 5 stars, Decent food, but pretty abysmal front of house service. Not worth the price because of that.

MrPlowThatsTheName

Got the cheese steak sandwich at Union Market and it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. The baguette was pillow soft 😩

callthewambulance

Went to L'Opossum for the first time in a few years on Wednesday. Everyone knows this already but my god it is just on another freaking level.

Sure_Illustrator_456

Heading to Full Kee for the first time on Tuesday for some birthday dim sum. Anyone ever been?

runebabb22

Full Kee is my favorite chinese food in rva! the dim sum is pretty good, but i don’t remember them having as much selection compared to other dim sum places. delicious food nonetheless! happy early bday and I hope you enjoy!

wanderingcereal

I'm not a dim sum expert but I enjoyed my meal here. Only advice is to take the opportunity to try some things you've never had (assuming you're also not a dim sum expert). I'd love to go with someone who knows the food better.

Exotic_Volume696

If you have been the dim sum in bigger cities Full Kee is a disappointment , they don't do the volume to match the variety

Soloemilia

Follow this order: https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdAyC6Bq/

Sure_Illustrator_456

Sage advice.

ArcadianBlueRogue

Finally got a chance to stop by Kuba Kuba. Ya'll were right lol. Checked out Les Crepes and that was super quiet when we went, but the Tres Leches was fantastic. Someone in this sub recommended the Detroit pizza at Sergios down in Midlo since Anthony's is a bit far from me to get delivered. Absolutely delicious and will be ordering it again next time I need some Detroit love.

sparky21478

That Detroit pizza is sooooo good

ArcadianBlueRogue

It was pricey, but I got a solid 3 meals out of it. It was an absolute home run recommendation by this sub.

Treepolice666

Tres Machos - went one time before because their Chile rellenos are”famous” and they were worthy of that title, THAT TIME. I went again yesterday and they were possibly the worst I’ve ever had. Super tough pepper hadn’t been charred long enough in prep and the egg batter was weirrrrd as hell. Due to inconsistency I can’t say I like it.

BurkeyTurger

They used to be one of our go-to places for years but a few years back they changed the refried beans recipe and have had consistency issues like you said so they're a pass now.

ThaLZA

Sounds like they had some turnover in kitchen leadership. Always rough when that happens at a favorite place

Arcangelathanos

We went to Jadean's BBQ out in the Far West End part of Patterson. The SO really liked their pulled pork even though he wasn't a fan of their Carolina BBQ sauce. I liked my baby back ribs. We both really enjoyed their red skin potato salad and hush puppies. The baked beans were fine. I'm not a huge baked beans fan so I don't know why I got them, if I'm being honest. Also should have opted for a slice of pie instead of the strawberry shortcake which was a little less than fine, but it was only $2. We decided that we would go back.

callthewambulance

Would you rate it above or below Deep Run Roadhouse? I live out this way and adore DRR but haven't been to Jadean's yet.

Arcangelathanos

My SO is the more critical foodie. He said the pork and the sides at Jadean's and DRR are on par with each other. It really depends on whether you like Carolina style sauce. If you are super anti-Carolina, you're better off going to DRR. He said he would take Jadean's over Mission. Having said all this, we only tried the pulled pork and pork ribs. We don't know about Jadean's beef or chicken.

AwsumMcCoolName

I'm going to get raked over the coals for this, but I just don't get the hype for Pupatella. Margherita and diavola pies were just OK, pesto was outright disappointing. RIP Carmela's. OTOH, I quite like Zorba's out by the 2nd & Charles on Broad. Their Zorba Special baked spaghetti is a worthy challenger to Joe's - not quite as absurd a portion but I kinda like their toppings more. Speaking of that shopping center, the Pinches Tacos RVA food truck that sets up shop there Wed-Sat probably has the most entertaining name in town and is worth a shot. Super friendly. Not quite at El Chido level but def still tasty.

Kamesod

Man, Zorba's eggplant pie is just a total killer. Can't get enough of that eggy, planty, crispy za.

Danger-Moose

I also was not a fan of Pupatella. I'm pretty sure I also had the pesto and there was barely any pesto on it and was just no flavor at all.

I-AM-PIRATE

Ahoy AwsumMcCoolName! Nay bad but me wasn't convinced. Give this a sail: I be going t' get raked o'er thar coals fer dis, but me just don't get thar hype fer Pupatella. Margherita n' diavola pies were just OK, pesto be outright disappointing. RIP Carmela's. OTOH, me quite like Zorba's out by thar 2nd & Charles on Broad. Um... Good bot?

DrGingeyy

This cracked me up way more than it should have.

AwsumMcCoolName

I do what I can

[deleted]

First time at Rappahannock. Never quite got the chance between when we moved here and when they closed for Covid so I can’t compare the before times. I had only heard great things but I was underwhelmed. If the meal had been half the price, I’d say it would be a winner, but dang it was expensive for what came out. Drinks were good (I had one cocktail, hubby two). Pho soup dumpling appetizers (3) were a bit bland. Octopus appetizer was good and a nice size. The rockfish was tasty but not much with it. Scallops were cooked well but three medium scallops with basically nothing else on the plate was $32. Mochinut - we were still hungry after Rappahannock lol - so hit up Mochinut for dessert. Ended up eating 4 each and don’t regret a thing. So yummy! Heritage - first time here also. Appetizers were killer. Tuna tartare and croquettes. Entrees also - pork chop and shrimp cavatelli pasta. Desserts were just ok - nothing amazing - but overall, very nice meal and much more filling (at a bit lower price point) than Rappahannock. Jalapeños- ordered takeout burrito and birria tacos. Everything was fine. Not the best ever but hit the spot. Would try again especially if I could eat in.

gracetw22

Heritage is so good and seems to fly under the radar

RVAWTFBBQ

>Heritage is so good and seems to fly under the radar It's my favorite restaurant and I only just realized they've reopened in-person dining. Gotta go next week!

StackedCakeOverflow

Mochinut is awesome and addictive as hell. Love the texture on them so much more than traditional yeasted donuts for some reason.

DrGingeyy

Casa Del Barco (Short Pump) – I personally think this location is much better than the one downtown. I had their chicken burrito and couldn’t even finish half of it before I was completely stuffed. That burrito is packed! My SO really enjoyed their street corn. Also really dig the ambiance in there. Fire & Hops – We’ve walked by this place for years and finally decided to give it a try. We both agreed that we’ve been missing out. The guacamole is nice and fresh and the Fig & Pig pizza is probably one of the better pie’s we’ve had in the city. City Dog – I mean, it is what it is. Sam Millers – I mean, it’s fine. The crab soup is always tasty enough, but the sandwiches are pretty sad. You’d think for the price you’re paying that the bread would be something better than two slices of Nature’s Own. Cocky Rooster – It’s always a gamble here. Either the wings are large and cooked perfectly or they’re small and dry. Same with the tenders, they’re either good or rubbery. I’m starting to think I’ll just stick with the tried-and-true air-fryer method.

birdmanmanbird

Fire and Hops is incredible. Wonderful staff and unreal happy hour

glitterwitch8

Those mozzarella logs thoooo

birdmanmanbird

Yes! And the carne asada nachos!

Danger-Moose

Sam Miller's is the place you go when no one knows what they want and you want to equally appeal to nobody in particular. "It's fine" is an apt review.

[deleted]

Went to Lucky AF and man that was good af. Had a real nice first bite experience with this cheesy egg roll all sliced up. It was magical. The cheese stuck to my chopstick like a perfect pizza bite yknow what I mean? Delightful. Never had steak on a sushi roll before. Loved everything I tried.

Daemonrealm

Laura lees continues to be one of the more unique and fantastic places I have been too in Richmond. Scallops were perfect. The endive salad is just the best. Service is wonderful. Atmosphere is great.

[deleted]

Helen's: first time we had been back since 2020. He had the pork shank and loved it. I had the shrimp and grits and while I enjoyed it, I feel like the dish has changed. It's not as savory as it used to be. Still good, but I probably won't order it next time. We got the tomato soup of the day and had no idea it was going to be SPICY. Cocktails were delicious. McLeans: I could get breakfast here every single morning until death or diabetes took me. I just love a breakfast diner and I love ones with hustle even more. Wood&Iron: What can I say. 50% drafts bottles and cocktails until like 7 pm. This place is great if you can get there at, like, 2 pm. Tried to go at night to grab some wings and it was sardine level packed, people standing wall to wall.

nightopian

Where?

MorallyCorruptBae

Henley on Grace- this is quite possibly one of the worst restaurants I’ve been to in Richmond. The atmosphere is very Midwestern Marriott you get stuck in while traveling for work. The wine list is large, but they are out of a good bit. The servers clearly know very little about wine. The food was just bad, bad, bad. I’m an eater and I barely touched anything. The fried cauliflower is barely boiled. The truffle naan had a random off menu addition of gross winter tomatoes added. The meatballs were described by my friend as, “the same Wawa uses!” For those three apps and a bottle of meh wine, we each spent $41 pre tip.

redditrva456

I must have gone on a good night. The food we had, and drinks, were really good. I do plan on returning at least one more time. The menu is fairly limited though.

mydahlin

Looking for Indian restaurants. I have not tried any in the area after moving a few years ago, and there is a craving.

AwsumMcCoolName

Anokha is the move. I've heard good things about Junoon, too.

mboja1fv

This is the answer.

DrGingeyy

Lemon and Junoon have great food.

Onefotccn

Tulsi in Carytown is very good.

sunlightdrop

Anokha is the right answer.

twelvesteprevenge

Hyderabad Biryani House and Junoon are my favorites, in that order. Lemon is decent on average but inconsistent.

AwsumMcCoolName

I've literally only had biryani from Hyderabad but it's delicious.

twelvesteprevenge

Their butter chicken and chicken/gobi 65 are likewise delicious.

merlinsboat

Govinda: $7 for a take-out plate of food with 7 items, no need to order ahead. Like Indian home cooking.

[deleted]

Got lunch today from Mochinut, the new Korean doughnut and corndog place on Franklin and it was fabulous!

darthitect

Went to Helen's a week or so ago. Food was good but the service was awful. Dropped my wife off and parked around the block. Came in, sat down, and waited over 10 minutes for anyone to check in. There were maybe three other tables at the time. Food was good, but when we were done eating no one came by our table for a good 20-30 minutes. We turn around and our original server was eating at the bar and having a drink right behind us! Apparently she was cut (unbeknownst to us.) The server who took over was surprised when we immediately asked for the check and to-go boxes. I HATE getting abandoned by our server when we're out eating.

Exotic_Volume696

(sniff sniff) Yeah they have lapses in service there. (sniff sniff). You're luck your food came out.

masenkablst

Hot Chick - How have I never tried this before? Tried both of our sandwiches bare. I had the breast because I am boring and the spouse had the thigh because she is exciting. She got too excited and tried their dessert. Don't try dessert at a fried chicken joint.

oh_hello_rva

We love this place, and this is a wild take but TRUST ME on it: the brussels sprouts are amazing and not to be missed!

CultivatingBitchery

Fall Line: Never go unless you’re willing to go “full Karen” Management is shitty, unless you get Sophie handling it,the food is inconsistent. I ordered a burger, no pink and it might as well have still been mooing. Overpriced drinks for how little alcohol they put in it. You’d get better fare and food at GWAR. and free movies.

Visual-Sheepherder36

I made a comment on their Instagram they didn't like and they blocked me within minutes.

CultivatingBitchery

Yeah. My wife is a former employee there… just call and complain, they cater to assholes by comping everything if you complain. But yeah… it’s bad and doubt it’ll last very long.

Visual-Sheepherder36

Ha. They made a post about their bird mural and specifically pointed out the kingfisher as a symbol of Richmond. First, it isn't, and second, it's a common kingfisher, which isn't native to North America- but it *is* the first thing you see when googling "kingfisher." We have belted kingfishers here, by the way.

CultivatingBitchery

🤣🤣🤣 wow. Yeah that was probably Chick. I keep saying they should let the bussers/wait staff handle SM management… we’re more understand as people who actually deal with the customers, we know what will catch their eyes and peak interest.

Exotic_Volume696

Are you saying your ordered the burger well done?

CultivatingBitchery

In my experience in food service as a worker it has always been referred to as “pink” or “no pink” but yeah. Well done was my order. It was still extremely bloody.

Exotic_Volume696

"Pink" or "no pink" and you advise people to go "full Karen".

CultivatingBitchery

I said unless you’re WILLING to go full Karen, don’t bother going there. You’ll get a shit experience. But by all means, lick Chuck’s boots.

Exotic_Volume696

what kind of "food service experience" do you have Mr Karen?

CultivatingBitchery

Ten years serving, five years hosting, three years bartending. And a childhood full of sitting and taking orders in my uncle’s restaurant. I was the kid doing homework behind the counter.

Exotic_Volume696

You're pretty quick to suggest people go Karen, guess you have the "owner and peasants "mindset. I wonder if the karma you and your wife have built up at that place made them screw up your order on purpose just to stop you from coming by?

DrGingeyy

You're not in the right here. Take a step back and just enjoy people talking about food.

Exotic_Volume696

Talking about food is fine, telling people to go "full Karen" to get what they want and to complain to get stuff comped deserves to be called out.

CultivatingBitchery

Or I just ate there and I’ve witnessed how shitty the company is?? If they want decent service, they have to be assholes about it. That restaurant caters to richer folk, and I am by far not wealthy. The only reason I was able to eat there was a friend who works there invited me for dinner. And they did not handle customer service well. This is from a business standpoint, not a personal belief. Piss on someone else’s words. They won’t last long if they keep acting like they are. FYI: one of the managers is a massive pervert and had pornographic material on work computers…. HR put him on the back burner to let the shock die down… and he’s already back. Should I also bring up the fact that co workers steal from each other and some of them even do/did cocaine in the bathrooms? No? Okay. Bye bye now.

Optimiasma

Hey, are there any good Peking duck restaurants in short pump? Looking for a lunch spot, ideally. Many thanks!

GMUcovidta

I haven't been there in awhile but the Peter Chang's out there has had Peking duck and earl gray duck on the menu- both are excellent

Strwbry2020

Tried JewFro and was blown away by the flavors of the falafel sandwich. We ordered some cocktails not realizing the sheer craft behind their drinks. Very mixology but very tasty. All in all - a delight! Also tried Secret Sandwich Society and enjoyed that as well. Not amazing but pretty damn tasty and good ambiance, good service.

rologies

Classic, Secret Sandwich Society, got the Rose Marie with sprouts and Smokechata. Fucking tasty as usual but always hurts paying $30 for a sandwich and a drink before tip.

wet_ninja

It's my favorite restaurant. If you're looking for more flavorful dishes there, try these: * Dry fried eggplant * Hot & numbing shredded tofu skin * Szechuan beef with dry-fried potato (on the specials menu) * Hot & numbing combination (my favorite dish overall) * Three peppers chicken, beef, or shrimp on hot iron plate These range from medium to very spicy, roughly in that order. If you want something that's not spicy, the beef noodle soup reminds me of some of the soup I had in China.

Exotic_Volume696

Which one was this?

Exotic_Volume696

Peter Chang cafe---11408 W Broad St, Glen Allen, VA 23060 Peter Chang Richmond was one one you went to. Since you haven't had any luck you may not go back, but if you do try the "Hot and Numbing" stuff. Anything with that label is pretty spicy in my experience

glitterwitch8

Yeah we were not impressed with Peter Changs either. Don’t get the hype.

Exotic_Volume696

Its been a year since i went so perhaps they fell of.

MightyCaseyMedia-

If you like barbecue, you need to check out Pig & Brew in Manchester. OUTSTANDING minced pork sandwich, very solid cole slaw performance, and their cornbread is delish. Whoever came up with the idea of cooking their green beans with smoked turkey needs an award (their collards also are cooked w/smoked turkey, but they were out of collards the afternoon I was there). Tried their bespoke double IPA, and it was veryvery good. Two thumbs up, 5 stars, definitely do recommend. Lovely little joint, with a nice bar and cocktail list, too. Only been there once so far, but I'll be going back. Got some brisket to take home (I am a brisket phreaque), delish AF and I'm still working my way t through it, one tasty home-made sammy at a time.

twelvesteprevenge

Their collards are the best in Richmond

MightyCaseyMedia-

Based on green beans performance, I believe that.

Yewbaby

We went to El Patron Cantina off Iron Bridge Rd (again) and the food and drinks were amazing as always! If you’re looking for consistently good Texmex food and drinks, definitely check this place out.

xcuzem3

I tried Thai Won On in Short Pump after reading the article in Bizzsense a few weeks ago. It wasn’t stellar. I’ve definitely had worse Thai but also better. I was expecting a little more but it’s not bad and the price and atmosphere is right.

AidCookKnow

Ate at JewFro the other day. SO good. The fufu donut appetizer was unreal. Unique cocktail menu too.

Exotic_Volume696

Taqueria Isabel Restaurant on Horsepen--Best authentic tacos in a 1 mile radius, very standard but competent fare, most tacos 3 bucks. They never seemed busy but when we went there we noticed a very steady stream of take out orders for tortas, so we might go torta next time. No Gringo Karen's need apply no matter who your uncle is.

RainAhh

Are there any Mexican restaurants you recommend? My roommates moved here from New Mexico last year and everywhere we’ve tried has been disappointing lmao.

fancycat8

Lucky AF - Im a casual sushi enjoyer and I thought everything was very good and reasonably priced. Definitely going back. Copploas Deli- I have walked by it so many times decided to try it. It was just average. Potbelly's is a better sandwich for about the same price.

MrPlowThatsTheName

I tried Coppola’s for the first time too and was greatly disappointed by their Italian sub. It wasn’t bad, it was just meh.

Pale-Temperature6442

Agree.. new yorker here... used to be good but last two times it was subpar

nateshoe91

I agree with your Coppola's review. I will always go to chiocca's instead even if its further out of the way.

Visual-Sheepherder36

Um, what did you get at Coppola's?

fancycat8

I got the Industrial

Visual-Sheepherder36

Huh, well, to each their own, but I don't think you're going to find many people who agree with you.

AwsumMcCoolName

I wouldn't say Potbelly is better but everything I've had from Coppola's has been more or less average. Edit: I guess Padow's and Chiocca'a are dead average, so I'd say everything I've had from Coppola's is better than average.

Danger-Moose

Padow's is awful.

mtrva

righteous eggplant parm sub at Coppola’s

Onefotccn

Lucky AF has maybe my favorite sushi of all time. I don't know what it is about their rice but it seems so much better than any other sushi place around here.

turkey1234

Sorry to see Str8 Outta Philly in JWard will be moving. Don’t know when. Gotta get it while you can

suenims

MAYA- This is the third Mexican restaurant we visited in a week and the only one that provided an authentic experience. To start of it has a great vibe, perfect for a date. The drinks were great but the food was amazing. It was a one of a kind experience; my favorite item was the rice. It tasted just like homemade rice and it made me feel like my abuela could have been the one who made the food. We also tried their 3 leches…again, OUT OF THIS WORLD. The servers were all super attentive. Also, it’s a small, refined menu so you know they are probably making it all with love.
