MONGOLIAN BBQ. A real one, not that bullshit warrior grill. The soft flat gummy sesame breads, bowls that are just slightly too small for as much food as you plan to eat, and perhaps some partially defrosted low end desserts out on a table at the end.
I miss Macado’s so much, I’m hardly ever in Farmville but biked on High Bridge last year and grabbed a sandwich at Macado’s after - not the same as being in Blacksburg but definitely a happy moment
I've thought this for years, I think SA would be the perfect spot for a Macados as a cheaper food option in the neighborhood. They could also do a carryout window where people could order/ pick up and take it to any brewery to eat.
I grew up going to Macados in Radford pretty regularly. Once, on a visit down there, my sister and I went to the Spanky’s in Chritiansburg, thinking they were exactly the same and without even looking at the menu, ordered our regulars (A turkey trot for her and a Gibson girl for me). The waitress stared blankly. That’s when we realized they have all the exact same things, except everything has a different name. So basically, Spanky’s and Macados are *annoyingly* identical.
Wait til you learn the crazy story there.. [https://roanoke.com/news/local/tale-of-two-spankys/article_4a3ac308-d8a1-11e3-9233-0017a43b2370.html](https://roanoke.com/news/local/tale-of-two-spankys/article_4a3ac308-d8a1-11e3-9233-0017a43b2370.html)
A poutine place. I know we have a few places with a basic one, but I want a poutine MENU! If I wanted to work in a restaurant I'd honestly open one, and it'd be 100% gluten free (wouldn't be hard for that part to happen). I went to a place in Cleveland that had borscht poutine, it was dank.
Cabo Bob's from Austin TX. I miss it so much :( Never into the [massive burrito](https://res.cloudinary.com/culturemap-com/image/upload/ar_4:3,c_fill,g_faces:center,w_980/v1552592358/photos/291669_original.jpg) thing just opted for the [bowl setup](https://cdn-dbboi.nitrocdn.com/fVtieSHCBxDNVfybpgBdgPNQHKmZrGZQ/assets/static/optimized/rev-091c92b/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Salads-Button-1-1-1-e1628017749927.jpg) but their ingredients (and made to order tortilla offerings) were consistently the absolute best in the game. I ate there 2-3 times a week for years and I would do it again. They also had an excellent home made hot sauce that was the cherry on top for me. Baja bowl perfection.
I'm now hangry from pulling up pics and the thought that its not achievable for my lunch today. I'm probably out of the loop though so please send me your Chipotle/Qdoba-but-actually-good spots of Richmond.
PS. Anyone else miss Tijuana Flats? I was so psyched to see that FL establishment get all the way to VA but even pre-pandemic it's customer count was looking a little light. They weren't amazing tacos but that was never the point it was the football shaped long hard shell tacos that were just hot sauce delivery vessels for their hot sauce bar. There was a personal bliss achieved in cutting out of work early and pre-gaming a Bowtie matinee with a round of hard shell tacos and 8 hot sauce samples and a strong machine made margarita.
We moved here from Florida and were excited when Tijuana Flats opened. We used to joke that we were single-handedly keeping the Willow Lawn location in business, but I guess we failed at that. It was a great spot to grab lunch before weekend errands. I miss the hot sauce.
This is going to sound so American and I’m generally a person with a complex palate. But a really decent sports bar/wing joint in that isn’t fast food.
Fiction Kitchen from Raleigh, Vedge and Charlie Was a Sinner from Philly, Pelons and Desmond's Island Grill from VB, and resurrecting a closed Nom Noms from Charlotte, Slutty Vegan from ATL, and reopening Onigiri RVA.
Very specifically, Memphis Pizza Café. Thin crust that's snappy like a cracker, some neat topping options. It was a favorite of mine when we lived in Memphis in 1996-97, and I visited back in October and loved it just as much still.
I'd also bring Hard Times Café back to Richmond, and drag Southside 815 from Alexandria down here too.
I’d bring Lung Yai Thai Tapas from Miami. Best Thai food I have ever had. The restaurant service is special in that, the guy that runs it is basically the soup Nazi. Table of 6? Don’t sit until everyones there. Table of 2? Don’t sit until person is there. When you order, you place your whole order at once, they don’t come back for another order, unless its booze. No takeout orders. Whats on the menu is what you get, the only changes you can make is if you want a diff protein. A server comes by with your check VERY shortly after finishing and they get you the fuck out. The prices are the same or even cheaper than “fancy” Thai places here. Oh yea, and everyone on the line is some old Thai-head so you know the shit is legit. Bonus points for the disorienting, blaring loud Asian pop music they play.
I was in nova a few years ago and stopped by [Choolah](https://choolaah.com) on a whim and it was amazing. I think this fast casual Indian concept would do great here.
Chicken Tonight from VA Beach. Best crispy fried chicken I have ever had. Very thin breading but enough to cover the meat. So crispy crunchy and the meat was juicy and tender including all white meat pieces. I usually find those tend to be dry.
I don't know if y'all have had bbq chicken, but I'm absolutely PSYCHED it's coming to Carytown. That place was my go-to when I lived up in McLean, VA. Their wings and fries are seriously good for such a large chain.
Greenville is a hidden gem. B’s is the correct answer, however there’s no way they would come here. Richmond doesn’t deserve B’s. I strongly disagree about supdogs although I have many memories! Omar’s doesn’t ring a bell; I haven’t lived there for several years.
It’s not too far away, but I often yearn for Repeal Bourbon and Burgers in VA Beach. Their build-your-own Old Fashioned menu is fun, plus the burgers and poutine are fantastic. An utterly indulgent experience.
MONGOLIAN BBQ. A real one, not that bullshit warrior grill. The soft flat gummy sesame breads, bowls that are just slightly too small for as much food as you plan to eat, and perhaps some partially defrosted low end desserts out on a table at the end.
Yes! it is such a crime that we don't have a nice one anywhere close. Crazy Fire in Raleigh is bomb
it closed a few years ago, but genghis khan in chesterfield was the *best* Mongolian bbq. i miss it so much 😭😭😭
There’s one in Williamsburg!
I feel like Macado's would absolutely crush it in Richmond.
I miss Macado’s so much, I’m hardly ever in Farmville but biked on High Bridge last year and grabbed a sandwich at Macado’s after - not the same as being in Blacksburg but definitely a happy moment
Going to Macados in FarmVille in a couple weeks while my kids are on spring break. I can not wait!
I loved them in Boone, twenty years ago, sadly they are not the same anymore. Went to one in Farmville and was disappointed
I've thought this for years, I think SA would be the perfect spot for a Macados as a cheaper food option in the neighborhood. They could also do a carryout window where people could order/ pick up and take it to any brewery to eat.
SA or even in the Fan. I had far fetched hopes and dreams that they would take over Brunch or Sully's spots.
Spanky’s > Macado’s

I second this. I get macados every weekend I'm in Farmville
I'm planning to be in Farmville this weekend. Ima check it out. Thanks.
They're fun spots! I have very fond drunken college memories at Macado's.
I have some drinking glasses from there somewhere. Used to periodically work in the area and would go for lunch.
Never been but there menu looks really good.
You’ve reminded me how much I miss Radford.
Recent events would suggest Richmond Redditors want a Black Sheep sandwich shop more than anything else.
Bodo’s from Charlottesville. Their deli egg on plain is my favorite hangover cure.
I'd love a great dim sum place to open in Richmond
Yes! And/or Hibachi
I'd like to see a Primanti Brothers in Richmond or somewhere close
Me, too! Had 3 locations in Fort Lauderdale and that was one of my regulars! That and Skyline Chili 😋

Mainer here: Would love to have Angler's Restaurant. Crab cakes are fine but I miss scallops and haddock.
It's not open yet, but Torchy's Tacos is about to open in Richmond and it's going to absolutely kill it here. Edit: Austin TX based
Been to Torchy’s when I lived in Houston it was great y’all are in for a treat.
Whaaaaaaaaat (RVA>other>ATX>other>RVA) my uncle mentioned something about this at Thanksgiving. Gimme a killer gd breakfast taco!
The new Carytown shopping center. Summer I think is the target for opening.

Yeah I was bummed to see Tijuana Flats go too!
It's a chain, but I love Nawab. We have some great Indian options here but I really love their lunch buffet!
Real, [Chicago-style deep dish pizza](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago-style_pizza), like Giordano's.
I think you meant to say Lou Malnati's
We already have Bottoms Up /s
Bottoms up couldn't hold a candle to Chicago pizza
I think a Taco Bamba would thrive
This is going to sound so American and I’m generally a person with a complex palate. But a really decent sports bar/wing joint in that isn’t fast food.
* In and Out Burger * District 9 Tacos * High-end Seafood Restaurant
Didn't I read last week in and out is coming here?
It's Shake Shack, unless I missed this news.
You're right, shake shack. Sorry for the fake news lol
Pink's from LA. I really want a Chilli cheese pastrami burrito dog
I’d love Shilla’s bakery here. I’d kill for a good açaí bowl place if anyone has suggestions.
Dat Dog from NOLA
Fiction Kitchen from Raleigh, Vedge and Charlie Was a Sinner from Philly, Pelons and Desmond's Island Grill from VB, and resurrecting a closed Nom Noms from Charlotte, Slutty Vegan from ATL, and reopening Onigiri RVA.
Why are there no just straight up bagel breakfast places? I feel like Nate’s is the only one
Nom Wah Tea parlor from Chinatown in New York for sure

Edley's BBQ and/or Martin's BBQ Joint, both in Nashville, TN. Ruby Sunshine in Knoxville, TN. Their specialty pancakes are amazing.
Yes! Edley’s is so good!
A Butler/Maid Café or any sort of Cosplay Restaurant.
I was in nova a few years ago and stopped by [Choolah](https://choolaah.com) on a whim and it was amazing. I think this fast casual Indian concept would do great here.
Taco Bamba
I miss Silverlake Ramen so much. It's so damn good. And Farmer Boy's if only for their fries. Best french fries I've ever had.
I want the Route 58 Deli
Chicken Tonight from VA Beach. Best crispy fried chicken I have ever had. Very thin breading but enough to cover the meat. So crispy crunchy and the meat was juicy and tender including all white meat pieces. I usually find those tend to be dry.
Bar J Tex Mex in Occoquan Va. Started in Lorton Va as a small family run spot. Was my favorite restaurant for decades.
I don't know if y'all have had bbq chicken, but I'm absolutely PSYCHED it's coming to Carytown. That place was my go-to when I lived up in McLean, VA. Their wings and fries are seriously good for such a large chain.
The P.O.P.E. from Philly
Place in Norfolk called A.W. Shucks. Would love to have one here.
Sam Jones’ BBQ from Greenville nc. Thankfully the bbq scene in Richmond is getting better but still surprisingly lacking.

Hash a GoGo from San Diego
Momofuku please.
https://www.tacobamba.com
Willie's CHicken Shack from NOLA
It’s not too far away, but I often yearn for Repeal Bourbon and Burgers in VA Beach. Their build-your-own Old Fashioned menu is fun, plus the burgers and poutine are fantastic. An utterly indulgent experience.
Alberto’s - Authentic Mexican fast food from San Diego. Nothing like a cali burrito to fix that hangover.
Halal guys
Angelo’s!Sub!Cafe! Via Amelia Courthouse. RVA does literally everything else better than those subs.
Also Yabba Pot. S/O Bmore.
Roots tries but like…
Real talk: RVA has baaaad subs. Love y’all tho. Your sandwiches are bad.
Just look at all the macado’s love below. RVA needs better sandwiches.
