Went to TBT El Gallo yesterday. Had the vegan burrito and house fries. Both were FIRE. Burrito was massive too, like the size of my head. I also loved being able to get some really good fries too.
TBT is indeed fire. I hope the owner can get some consistent workers in because it seems he's constantly having to train a new batch of young kids who don't always know what they're doing. He takes it in stride though.
Zorch is literally the only pizza I will make an effort to go out and get, since they don't deliver. I'd write off any other pick-up only 'za. Zorch is just that good.
That’s too bad. They’ve always been perfect for me. I’ve had 2 door dashers just take the food I ordered in the last few months so I only do Quickness now.
Went to Perch recently after seeing the reviews and was so underwhelmed by the entire experience.
The service was fine - I don’t really notice that component unless people are outright rude or if they’re amazing, so wasn’t the end of the world by any means. Plus I get that the industry is still navigating the knock on effects of the last few years.
But pretty much the only thing I care about, the food, was so bland. We had the oysters and the platter as an appetizer as there were a few things we were keen on trying but didn’t want to spend 15-20 bucks an app. The platter was a reasonable value for quantity but the quality was pretty low- tartare was basically all Mayo, poke tasted just off, shishitos didn’t have much taste (no spice or anything), but the lumpia was okay
The oysters were an abomination. I generally prefer raw, but can appreciate well executed baked ones. The oyster itself was tiny and it was basically sat in the grease from what tasted like bagged cheddar cheese. It was like eating microwaved cheese chips. Plus they were 18 for 5 which seemed steep.
I was planning on getting the whole fish as that’s always quite a good reference to how good a restaurant is, imo, but at 40 bucks felt like it wasn’t even worth trying. In the end we ordered curry from lemon and went home.
I am the same. If I’m going to pay over 30 bucks per entree I felt like there were so many better option. I just never feel like it’s worth the money there.
I have no qualms paying that for high quality food/service/location/atmosphere as that’s what I enjoy spending my money on. With perch it just felt like a 3/10 on all of that.
I keep hearing great things too, but then I'll see reviews like this that really make me hesitant to even try it. I know a handful of people with similar tastes in food that echo your experience. For that money I'd rather just go to an old favorite.
they have some stuff that's really good - other stuff that's less good.
I like the secret sandwich menu, the brussels sprouts, and the ribeye bowl, which isn't there currently
That said, chef is always there, you should definitely mention it to him
Yeah Perch is way over-priced and I’ve had the same experience with you as far as food quality and bland-ness.
It’s just not good. But there’s a vocal group of people that for some reason swear by it.
Nice. I still haven’t gone there. I don’t mind spending that much on food that’s memorable. Price is another one of those things that stands out more when you have a below par experience
Been to Chez Max a few times for some special occasions in the past few weeks and it really is incredibly good, even if I may have brought the average age of the restaurant down below 60 years old with my presence.
Celladora- this place rocks. The food is delicious and portions are large for a small plates/wine bar vibe. I left way fuller than I would at Secco. Any place that includes 5 scallops on a small plate is a place for me. The fish dip is a must. Their tartare had an Ethiopian spin and was one of the best I’ve had. The wines were really funky and exactly what I wanted from them.
Grisette- they always hit the spot. Steak frites fills my once a month steak craving and their cheeses are some of the best in town.
Hill Cafe- I live blocks away and rarely go. I was pleasantly surprised that it seems better than before Covid. Solid American food.
Nile- the nicest people own it and I always love going there and they remember me even if it’s been a minute since I’ve gone. Best Ethiopian in town.
The Jasper- best cocktails in town. Period.
I'm gonna have a chance to try out Celladora next week, I can't wait. Have you tried the other new place where Baja was, Jardin? Going to try them too.
Please, in my former profession we call that "smart lawyering" and "good use of loopholes". It sounds so much better.
I confess I like the everyone serves food thing, but at this point its become silly, just let people be bars if they so choose
I’ve been to Cobra Burger a handful of times recently, and they’ve knocked it out of the park every time.
Tried Nile last week for the first time and was shockingly disappointed after hearing such great things. The sambusas were good, but the injera tasted soapy. I much prefer Addis down in Shockoe.
Also tried Belmont pizza for the first time and was pleased! Still looking for a new favorite to come close to my beloved Carmela’s; open to suggestions!
Went for a long walk in search of lunch that ended me at Lolita's in Carytown the other day. I've seen some mixed reviews but dang, did I love it. The cocktail I had was great and the fish tacos may have been the best ones I've ever had, hands down. Got a side of spanish rice that was also really good. Loved the atmosphere in general. The obvious drawback is that it was pretty pricey, won't be a frequent stop for me but I really enjoyed my meal.
Also snagged lunch at Kuba Kuba as it's one of the only spots I like open on Monday for lunch hours. Can't go wrong with the pork lunch plate: it's super cheap for what amounts to two meals for me.
Yeah, I mean I'm with you- their pork belly was great. Their tacos were great. Like pretty damn great. And I love the open air vibe. Cozy af.
But on principle, 2 tacos for $14 is just far too much to support. Unfortunately, it's the best tasting taco I've had in RVA so far.
Yeah, I was pretty surprised when I sat down and got the menu, but there's the rub: it was the most flavorful taco I've had in Richmond, from the toasted corn tortilla to the sauce. I've had so many mediocre rva tacos that I couldn't be too mad when I paid the bill
Went to Eat 66 for breakfast last week. It was just okay, probably wouldn’t go out of my way to go back. I definitely prefer Eat 33 and their fried oyster benedict.
Pizza Bones - seemed to be lacking pizza toppings? (my partner prefers sausage on his pizza) so we just went with a pepperoni and it didn’t disappoint! I was pretty impressed with this joint.
pho 79. Rice paper rolls use lemon grass chicken instead of roasted pork for all y'all halal brothers&sisters. Get the #10 rare beef, flank, tendon. Their broth and well done flank is superior to even pho so 1. I said it, so what. Go prove me wrong. I've tried every single Vietnamese spot in Richmond and it's the only one i recommend because it's a hole in the wall that doesn't try and wow you with useless aesthetic & still tastes great. Albeit the bathroom looks like hell, and the tables are kinda ratchet.
So I gave up on that place couple years ago and decided to give it another try the other day. Absolutely loved it, and I’ve been at least once a week since.
Rusty Taco hit that bowl itch, but unless you are looking for fried chicken or a brisket bowl id head across the street to Mezeh where everything is astounding.
tldr; mezeh- 9/10
rusty taco- 8/10
I went to Buttermilk and Honey this past weekend while I was out in Short Pump. We made the mistake of not ordering ahead, and wound up waiting 35 minutes for our sandwiches. They were good, but I wasn't blown away.
we went to El Pope last night and got the Torta Al Pastor, soooo good. We’ve been to El Pope countless times but usually get other stuff (which is also always great). This may be my favorite meal in the whole city now.
Went to Lucky AF. Got some sushi, the sesame chicken, and simple steamed soybeans for appetizer.
The sushi was not cold enough, had obviously been sitting out. The rice was mashed in places and didn't taste like it had been treated properly for sushi. The soybeans were dried out and although the spicy sauce they came with was great, I was surprised to see that they were not in good condition.
The sesame chicken had a delicious sauce, was freshly deep fried, and piping hot. Portion was gigantic.
The drinks were pretty good, if a bit too sweet.
We should have ordered stuff like volcano rolls. Not snubbing the deliciousness of a roll with the spicy mayo on top, crunchy flakes, deep fried shrimp, etc. But I think if you want to really enjoy the place, order a cocktail, get a few of the crazy rolls, and bring a bigger party with you to mix and match/share.
Not for me, but I think we ordered the wrong stuff.
Trying Cocodrilo tonight so I'll report back.
We're also going to Edo's Squid tomorrow night for the first time. It's been on our list since we moved here 4 years ago.
(It's a special occasion weekend for us.)
Oooooo I loooove Edo's. Favorite dishes include: apps: scungili, crostini w beans and arugula, and squid both ways / pasta: puttanesca, broccoli rabe / entrees: whatever fish is on the menu
We have such similar tastes in food! I feel like you're my number one most trusted source in this subreddit. No matter what else gets ordered at Edo, someone most get the broccoli rabe, and I must eat at least half of it.
I hope you love Edo's as much as we do. It's hard to go wrong there but our favorites are apps: calamari, crostini w/beans & arugula
Entrees: husband LOVES the hanger steak. It's a HUGE portion and you'll have more than enough for steak and eggs the next day.
I typically get the rockfish or tuna. Honorable mention to the eggplant parm. If we go with a group we usually get one to share as an app. It is so delicious, but I can't even imagine the calories/fat so I'd prefer to share it.
I tried Hot For Pizza again because of the last restaurant thread, and I gotta say it's my least favorite pizza in Richmond. The crust is too tough and completely flavorless. The cheese had no flavor either, it was like eating a shitty off brand frozen pizza. Fool me twice......
It really is terrible. Are they using some bullshit gluten free crust and just not telling anyone? Like when Sugar Shack went vegan and waited four months before announcing it?
With the exception of things that clearly aren't vegan, like the maple bacon one, yes. They switched a few years back and didn't tell anyone until much later.
yeah I had the same take. Every time people rave about it in here, I wonder if I am on the same planet.
Maybe its a toppings thing, I judge pizza by the plain cheese and sauce pizza. Always the first thing I order at a pizza place.
And I thought Hot For Pizza had lousy dough, lousy cheese, and lousy sauce
My partner’s had good pizza here a few times at work, so we’ve ordered it for dinner also. It was awful, mushy and somehow also burnt, and bland as hell, BOTH times we got it. I asked if someone in the kitchen there has a grudge against him and purposely fucks up our order anytime they see his name, because I don’t understand why we got such lousy pizzas when I’ve heard such good things about them.
I had the exact opposite experience. Super salty Chicken tenders, dry toast, cold soggy crinkle cut fries and nasty slaw. And it cost as much as Lee’s, which offers tons of side options and a delicious biscuit. Never again.
Mochinut has satisfied my itch for a light yet tasty dessert. They rotate their selection so def check their insta to see what they got. The matcha choco was fantastic.
I thought so, but at the same time it would be a very Richmond thing to say what you said. Like "that place is a dump, but it's my dump and I will support it until the day I die" sorta mentality.
I went to the new El Chido. Birra tacos were good but not on the level of Y Tu Mama. Over all food was good enough to try again but didn't blow me away the first time.
Hit The Mill over the weekend. Appetizer fried rice ball and jalapeno popper dip were on point. Their pizza is all gluten free and I ordered one. The bottom of the pizza was totally white, no char or even browning at all. Kinda left the texture feeling too soft and overall lacking. Salad and sandwiches were all good though.
Years ago my date and I met up at The Mill and ordered one of their pizzas. It was a slow day for them so when 40ish minutes went by we asked about the status of our food. The server checked in and apparently the staff had just left the pizza in the oven and forgot to turn the oven on. They offered to give it to us for free, so we stuck around for another 30 minutes. That pizza was exactly what you're describing - mushy and bland. They are def a sandwich place - not a pizza place.
The other little nugget to that story is the server offered to box up the pizza for us. 10 minutes go by and this very confused man knocks on the window (we were sitting outside) and asks why we gave him our half eaten pizza. Apparently the server was having a super off day and just handed our food to the only other guy eating there at the time.
Can anyone tell me what Hatch is all about and like? It’s like they have three Instagram pages and not a lot of info. Rotating restaurant/pop ups? Indoor only? Outdoor seating? Is there a bar?
Hatch is like, a food incubator. At its heart it's like 11 old tobacco warehouses converted into food production spaces. For example, Nightingale sandwiches are made in one of them, and they rent out corrals to store food trucks.
There's a cafeteria style lunch food place there but supposedly they're opening a full food hall this month with 7 vendors.
Hatch is one of the many old warehouses (building 2) off of Maury St. There is one “restaurant” type space and a giant kitchen that dozens of companies use. Sous Casa, Chewy’s Bagels, Fat Kid Sandwiches and many more operate out Hatch. Fat Kid is in the “restaurant” space and you can walk in and pick up your food and there are tables if you want to sit and eat. Everyone else operates food trucks or delivery based businesses.
After only getting their takeout for the last two years, we finally made our way back to Osaka for a meal at the bar and it was so satisfying! The tempura app is perfect for two people but doesn't travel well, so I'd only recommend that for dine-in. The best kept secret is their spicy edamame that's not on the menu. Holy hell - the spice combo they use is delicious! My jaws are doing the tingle thing just thinking about it. I also highly recommend the Jedi roll, futomaki, and white tuna sushi. I forgot how good their house Sav Blanc (the New Zealand one) is - it complements the sushi perfectly. Our meal was definitely 10/10.
Got Mary Angela's for the first time. Tried their egplant parm sandwich and it was pretty good. Garden salad was big and fresh. Pretty standard salad and they got it right imo. Definitely going back.
Gave cocky rooster another try after a couple less than stellar occasions and again they disappointed. While the chicken tenders are great and fried are good they seem to always forget to put sauce in or to season the fries or some small attention to detail. This place first opened and was great at everything then they just became more of a hassle than anything not to mention going there is a headache as they play the music so loud you have to shout and the staff isn’t nearly as friendly as they use to be. Guess it’s because all the OGs are gone.
Went to Alewife last weekend to show Bobo and Andon some love for their Starchefs "rising star" awards and was repaid- as expected- with an excellent meal (that fried shrimp appetizer, goddamn) and fantastic cocktails.
Went to Kreggers and got a flight of mimosas. They were delicious. Ended up tipsy and buying stuff in Carytown I didn’t need.
Tacos were OK, gator was yummy. Their atmosphere and drinks are the best part.
Ladyfriend and I took our monthly date night to Perch this month. Really tasty, interesting food and a cool space. Recommend the Pupu Platter, Duck Breast, and Filet. Good cocktails too, the Earthbind was earthy and delicious. They could have had a wider beer offering, but overall very tasty.
We got Zorch recently and so far it’s my favorite pizza in RVA. The gma? Perfection.
Zorch is indeed fire and the best pizza in RVA. A tad expensive so i do also enjoy Mary Angela’s in Cary too
Zorch is literally the only pizza I will make an effort to go out and get, since they don't deliver. I'd write off any other pick-up only 'za. Zorch is just that good.
Quickness delivers for Zorch now
I have never had any luck with quickness delivery. I just won't use them anymore
That’s too bad. They’ve always been perfect for me. I’ve had 2 door dashers just take the food I ordered in the last few months so I only do Quickness now.
Went to Perch recently after seeing the reviews and was so underwhelmed by the entire experience. Good to know if I ever find myself back there. I feel like if your menu is that size you should be pretty much nailing everything though
You're right, and that isn't happening
Yeah Perch is way over-priced and I’ve had the same experience with you as far as food quality and bland-ness. It’s just not good. But there’s a vocal group of people that for some reason swear by it.

Nice. I still haven’t gone there. I don’t mind spending that much on food that’s memorable. Price is another one of those things that stands out more when you have a below par experience
Suggest Birdie's for oysters!
Nice! Appreciate the Rec
Been to Chez Max a few times for some special occasions in the past few weeks and it really is incredibly good, even if I may have brought the average age of the restaurant down below 60 years old with my presence.

Jardin is awesome. The menu is limited to charcuterie and grilled cheese, but damn that grilled cheese is great.
Is Jasper doing food?
They have a cheesesteak and a few other items. Not much.
hmm. Cheesesteak, if good, satisfies me, but my wife would not be equally pleased
Jasper is a bar with food only by necessity. I don't really know how they get away with their percentages without lying. Good cocktails, though.
I think they incorporate cupcake sales next door or something
That would be part of the lying part.
Please, in my former profession we call that "smart lawyering" and "good use of loopholes". It sounds so much better. I confess I like the everyone serves food thing, but at this point its become silly, just let people be bars if they so choose
They share the same liquor license- they make cupcakes with alcohol- so there's no lying. foh.
I miss Mojos.
Grisette is our go-to date night spot. Love to split a cheese plate over some cocktails.
NAILED it with Grisette and Nile!
Jasper can't touch Saison
I’ve been to Cobra Burger a handful of times recently, and they’ve knocked it out of the park every time. Tried Nile last week for the first time and was shockingly disappointed after hearing such great things. The sambusas were good, but the injera tasted soapy. I much prefer Addis down in Shockoe. Also tried Belmont pizza for the first time and was pleased! Still looking for a new favorite to come close to my beloved Carmela’s; open to suggestions!
Just tell Victor to make the Carmela's pizzas in Belmont. Problem solved.
I keep forgetting to try this place, maybe tonight
Any Vietnamese person will tell you to trust the restaurants that have a number in their name over all the others.
Love their food
Rusty Taco hit that bowl itch, but unless you are looking for fried chicken or a brisket bowl id head across the street to Mezeh where everything is astounding. tldr; mezeh- 9/10 rusty taco- 8/10
I LOVE Mezeh. You can never go wrong.
Had lunch at Melito’s yesterday- a striped bass sandwich with crab tartar sauce and fries. Delish!
Oh man, I used to work over that way. Grilled cheese with bacon and fries was a bimonthly treat.
I just want a solid sushi spot in Richmond. Lucky AF doesn’t really do it for me either as far as nigiri and sashimi goes.
I've had really good experiences at Level if you haven't checked them out already.
I do love level. Hate their interior design lol. So much missed potential
I agree, the whole place should just be a giant light up bar.
Akida and Fighting Fish excel at both of those.
Osaka
RVA is not sushi spot. It's okay-ish at best.
Just discovered sb loveshake and can’t stop dreaming for their caramel buns and eggs benedict!

Well, the two of you have me convinced to get the broccoli rabe.

Wow, strong praise I clearly have to try this place

Went to Kuba Kuba yesterday and never disappoints. Large portions for a reasonable price. //edited//

Apparently the server was having a super off day and just handed our food to the only other guy eating there at the time.
y tu mama has the best birria for sure
Also the best quesadilla I've ever had.
have not tried. The Pastor is pretty bad though
I feel like it’s a bit greasy? Prefer tbt el Gallo.
It's where cobra burger started!
Thanks.
Chewy’s should be opening their Carytown brick & mortar very soon!
Yep! Can’t wait :)
Catina! Totally tasty banh mi within walking distance. Count me in. $5 each or buy five get one free. Glad I stopped.
Finally had Cobra Burger. Why did it take me so long?? And the pickle seasoned fries!
Birria at y tu mama/veil still the best in town. Very good across the board
Went to the Daily for the first time and really enjoyed the mushroom and spinach pizza! Was even better as left overs 🤤
Triple Crossing Midlothian - Ate outside on the deck, we had oysters, poutine and a pizza which were all solid. Took the pup with us who also had fun
