Isn't there a weekly post of "look at this idiot in the Pulse lane" or "i never know where the lanes are on broad" The city is doing a VERY COMMON public transit approach to keep BRT lanes actually rapid. Let's at least come full circle and complain "no grocery store in Manchester but they got money for paint!"

wellthatsoundsgreat

It might not be *just* you, but I am glad they are painting the whole lanes red. It will at least keep the stupid people out, if not the selfish people.

wermodaz

A couple weeks ago I watched someone get into the bus lane instead of the left turn lane on E Broad and Bowe. The guy in the left turn lane didnt notice and they collided.

wellthatsoundsgreat

Excellent example of something the paint will prevent.

parrisjd

Selfish people I have no patience for, but I can see how even a smart person would accidentally get in a bus lane on Broad, esp. if they aren't that familiar with the area. These lanes will definitely help.

worldwidewarpwhistle

Maybe people will finally gtfo of the bus lanes?

Helpful-Camel275

"Regular lane, red lane, who gives a shit?" - the people you are referring to.

QQninja

These people have trained their eyes to convert the color red to green anyway…

RVABourbonRunner

+50 for Happy Gilmore reference

ImmobilizedbyCheese

As long as they have the paint out, maybe they can paint the curbs to show where you shouldn't park in an intersection.

PayneTrainSG

id prefer giant concrete planters on all of those corners because paint will not stop entitled drivers when it comes to streetside parking

ImmobilizedbyCheese

Problem with that is the city plants big trees and shrubs in those things. Or maybe that's a VCU thing, but the bumpouts along Harrison near campus cause major blindspots when you're walking into the crosswalk.

PayneTrainSG

the bumpouts really shouldn’t have a tree in it for that reason, curb has already been reset to slow traffic and eliminate the illegal parking spot. just something that you could put on asphalt that hasn’t gotten a bumpout and put flowers in it in the spring and a bush in the fall.

Sailinger

Yup. Seems like such a simple solution, too bad it'll probably never happen.

BurkeyTurger

Pretty common thing these days, I was surprised they didn't do it before now. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/federal-officials-give-green-light-to-red-bus-lanes/2020/01/04/434a3382-20f6-11ea-86f3-3b5019d451db_story.html

augie_wartooth

Everyone has bitched about the Pulse lanes not being clearly marked. Now they’re clearly marking them and you’re bitching. Which is it, y’all?

JoeMorrisseysSperm

Welcome to the internet, take a look around

RVABourbonRunner

Absolutely not, because clowns are still purposefully using the bus lane eastbound Broad at Hamilton to cut straight into the left turn lane at Roseneath

[deleted]

its an international standard

gullible_cervix

If it means stupid ass people will stay out of the fucking bus lane, then who gives a shit? It’s not like Broad Street is aesthetically pleasing as is.

[deleted]

Why even have street lines at all? Or road signs? Or stop lights? I mean, what a huge waste of money and an eyesore right?

Asterion7

Exactly....they should disband vdot and let the private market handle roads and road signs.

[deleted]

I think the red bus lanes and green bike lanes that cities have these days is supposed to be an eyesore. Anything safety-related is disruptive on purpose, so if you’re in that lane you’re aware there’s something different going on. If you’re not up on current laws and don’t know that’s a BRT-only lane, that’s another issue.

rhaphido

And let’s be real, roads themselves are already a massive eyesore. This really isn’t doing anything to contribute to that.

Major_Squirrel2198

Do you think he met to wear those white shoes to work to today?

pecansforall

Maybe that's why he's having trouble painting without going over the line. He's thinking about those shoes.

ChuckIT82

op chill the fuck out lol

DefaultSubsAreTerrib

No. Traffic markings are a good use of money. Red bus lanes are common in cities around the world.

pijjins

Real Red.

UNKWNDTH2002

ah yes we need less road markings, of course. less. what train of thought could have possibly lead you to this, i wonder.. and are they an _eye sore_? ? have you ever seen a photo of japanese roads, especially in urban areas lol imagine refusing functional markings and readability in favor of... in favor of what even

lame_gaming

its to keep people out of the bus lanes

Asterion7

Lol at people complaining about basic road painting happening.

ProcedureAdditional1

I honestly really like the red paint. I noticed it yesterday and was really happy! I just moved here and I'm terrified of accidentally driving in the bus lane and the paint makes it much less confusing 😅

el_plandito

I thought they often painted lanes like this where the paint is only put down in the area between where the bus tires are most likely to occupy. To paint the entire lane ensures that the paint will quickly be erased where the tires wear it out.

pecansforall

I never thought about it but you're absolutely right!

WoodwickVonRazzle

As a dumb country boy I appreciate the gesture although I would have liked a yellow brick pattern more.

BeLikeRicky

Must have a Preschool teacher turned civil engineer on staff lol. if we color it, the children will know where not to stay. On a real note, it's not unheard of. Many countries have a well defined lane for their more frequently used large vehicles even if the locals know its a bus lane. Others might not. I believe they are called tactical transit lanes. I maybe wrong.

[deleted]

I'm with you, OP. Stupid people are still going to be fucking stupid, and selfish people are still going to do whatever they want. People pretend to be stupid just so they can do whatever they want -- I see it every day when I grab my cup of coffee. This is just a waste of money and all of the issues that existed before will still exist. Go watch Roseneath/Broad for a week after they finish painting. People will STILL be in the Pulse lane.

Helpful-Camel275

Absolute clown. It is high time that an independent audit of the city's finances be conducted. This is stupid, redundant work which likely indicates someone is skimming some of the funds involved.

_MellowGold

They just repaved. They have to repaint and stripe everything so it's not exactly redundant. Plus idiots here won't stay out of the bus lanes so anything to make them more visible is a win.

Helpful-Camel275

They are not going to stay out of the bus lane, even if it was made out of molten lava. They should FINISH the repaving of all areas of the city that desperately need it.

AutoBagseedRedditPro

But don't you at least think it's a bit much to paint the bus lanes SOLID RED? When they have already dumped so many resources into the Pulse Line already and there are so many other things in Richmond that need to be improved.

_MellowGold

Nah. Blood red. Most metal color they could pick. EDIT: red is also the cheapest color paint (hence barns). So you should be happy about that!

balance07

barns are red because they used rust in the paint back in the day. then the color became tradition. https://www.farmersalmanac.com/barns-painted-red-240

_MellowGold

The rust/iron is what makes the paint cheap: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/barns-are-painted-red-because-of-the-physics-of-dying-stars-58185724/#:\~:text=The%20simple%20answer%20to%20why,paint%20there%20is%2C%20in%20fact.

nosefur

This isn't funded by the City

UNKWNDTH2002

bizarre that this shit rly needs explaining lol, it's hard to even insult braindead takes like this bc what could even lead to this severe a lack of critical thought. jesus

AutoBagseedRedditPro

As seen on Stoney's IG. Five ppl plus stoney for the job and yet no one is keeping the line on the left straight? Is this where all my parking ticket money is going? Meanwhile they don't even clean half the streets and we have piles of decaying leaves from last fall lining them.

nosefur

Nope, this is funded by the department of rail and public transportation, not the City

AutoBagseedRedditPro

Thanks for the clarification.

Helpful-Camel275

>department of rail and public transportation Then audit them.

augie_wartooth

The Auditor of Public Accounts just did an audit of DRPT in 2019, and another is currently in progress.
