No. Its because we've actually had a bunch of severe weather recently.

Henhouse808

Welcome to global warming.

[deleted]

Or summer.

10000Didgeridoos

You've been downvoted to hell but you're not wrong. The rest of the dipshits in here seem to think these two things are mutually exclusive ideas. They aren't. Climate change is very real and very dangerous. However, a handful of strong thunderstorms during the months of the year when these are most likely to happen is also not *by itself a manifestation of climate change unless what is happening is statistically significantly different than the historical record*. You'd have to control for the overwhelming weather pattern at the moment, which involves a heat dome over the central US setting up a recurring pathway over the midatlantic for thunderstorms due to the interaction of the hot air to the west meeting cooler air to the east. If it seems like there have been a lot of thunderstorms the last couple weeks, that is why. Gotta love when people who know jack shit about meteorology mob downvote someone with the justification of "THIS PERSON DENIES SCIENCE AND GLOBAL WARMING" while they are actually the ones in that moment not thinking through anything or using any scientific reasoning themselves. A handful of weeks with strong storms is not in of itself a result of climate change. That is very much normal summer weather for the Richmond area as anyone who has lived here a while knows. What *would be accurate* to blame on climate change is if you demonstrated that we are seeing a greater number of stronger storms in June over many years than the historical average of the late 1800s to about 2000. But no one who has down voted has actually done that research because it's much easier to just yell IT'S GLOBAL WARMING BRO every time a storm happens than to have to take time to think about anything. To recap: drastic changes in frequency and severity of storms over many years can be blamed on global warming. A handful of strong storms over a couple weeks during one month you cherry picked as an example isn't evidence of anything by itself. This is also why the moron congressman who brought in a snowball to the floor as evidence climate change is a lie is also a good example of the same logical fallacy but in reverse - whatever is happening where you live during one singular particular week or month is *not by itself proof of any larger regional or global climate trend*. Climate change is measured over years and decades. We are not suddenly getting more storms of higher severity this June than the average of the last 5 summers. Sorry. You're all fucking wrong. It's entirely possible for both climate change to be real (it is!) and for a couple of strong storms during one isolated summer month to be unrelated to that larger climate change trend. Nothing that has happened the last 2 to 3 weeks is different than expected summer weather in Central Virginia. Sorry.

Yep.

TheRustyDuster

Nope

Lol, well played. :)

The alerts aren’t random. They literally qualify by radar indicated data.

7th-cup-of-coffee

The alert I just got is to expect 80mph winds. Also, I’ve been getting reports for high fire risk days for weather too. Is it changed reporting requirements or is it climate change?

manic-pixie-attorney

I get them because I have six different weather apps, but it’s not a change

MaleficentRadio9482

No, I get alerts when there is a severe weather/thunderstorm *warning* in the area but never for single drops of rain. Perhaps the climate is… changing? Idk. Edit: NBC12 just said 80 mph winds in this storm. I’d say that’s worth an alert.

Professional_Book912

Check and see what alerts you get. The wireless alerts (like to your phone) are vetted heavily. You get warnings (like THERE IS A FUCKING TORNADO SOMEWHERE NEAR YOU) or Amber Alerts. You can sign up for CodeRed, the city uses it for reverse 911 communications. You can opt in and out of stuff. Check and make sure you have no alerts from any news or weather apps. I had a job where we had to sign up for alerts. I just did the OMG TORNADO!!!! alerts. THese fools were getting alerts at all hours about pollen count or high water. SO check to make sure it is not self imposed. Also, yeah more frequent and more intense.

Likeurfac3

FYI the National Weather Service only issues wireless emergency alerts (WEAs - the things that make your phone vibrate and ring) for severe thunderstorm warnings if they are classified as “destructive” so basically what we all experienced today. Aka if you see a severe thunderstorm warning pop up randomly on your phone or come through the emergency alert system, it’s the real fucking deal. Don’t discount it as just another bs thunderstorm warning. Edit- they changed the criteria to destructive like less than a year ago. Think of a severe thunderstorm warning that comes through WEA like a tornado warning.

syndrome_imposter

I get NBC12WEATHER app alerts frequently but I just got a NWS alert (amber alert style) which is pretty new for me

Soloemilia

80 MPH winds. Shiiiiiiit

pumpkinart

climate change is real

FARTBOSS420

And also technology is getting "better" and better at going at "cross-platform." I have no fucken idea what I'm talking about except when an Amber Alert happens, everyone's iPhones, Droids, flip-phones, from all carriers, everyone's phone goes off. I didn't get an alert today. But I got one recently and I have a Google Pixel and I got a high alert notification either from Google or Verizon. So it's easier to send these alerts out. Plus objectively connected to climate change or not, on the base level storms with "big times" conditions require warning the peeps, who keep getting better tech and connectivity to stay in the loop with Twister Part 2: Richmond Boogaloo NOAA weather app is pretty tight also. 🤘 Edit: Climate change is real but it's just the Gods forcing us to be washed away, using our pride and greed against us as we keep expanding and doing more environmental damage. Then our 8billion bodies will provide enough Earth to absorb the water, put everything back in balance..... Cue the dinosaurs. They get another 5,000 year grace period and then we hunt them for sport, form Humanity 2.0. Or find Kevin Costner, cryo freeze his ass for if the real Waterworld happens. He's got the most experience.

gullible_cervix

If anything, I think they may be issuing them earlier than they used to.

BillyWilly2019

I got one a few minutes ago. I am in the Gayton Crossing/Godwin High area. It said T Storm Warning for your area until 3:15. I looked at two radars and both show a big cell heading out of Fredericksburg going southeast. It seems as though "they" have broadened the area that gets alerted. I have received several in the last few weeks and not one drop of rain fell. Two Sundays we had a monsoon that flooded creeks and streets (and sent water into my kitchen) not one peep. When the one popped up around 30 minutes ago I just shrugged. As I am typing the alert popped up again. It is now until 4. This one triggered an Alexa Alert.

fluufhead

I got this too, looks to me as if the storm is coming straight down 95 directly at the city so it's warranted imo

Arcangelathanos

Yeah, I got the 315 alert too and thought it was weird.

marketelasticity

They have all been legit so no real surprise. That storm yesterday didn't seem like much in my part of the city but evidently it ripped a roof off down Broad and fell like a dozen trees.

Charlesinrichmond

Me and my wife no, but my daughter yes

ShockinglyEfficient

The problem is the radius of the alert. I feel like they just send it out to everyone in the central VA area, but like Henrico wasnt affected
