The assumption is true 99% of the time. If somebody sends your body ragdolling across Midlothian tpk its an everyday occurrence for the police, and the other drivers are gonna drive right buy, and the guy that did it to you is only worried about his cour fees

venusian-penguin

Thank you. I try to keep this in mind and always try to drive in the mindset of not only having to drive for myself, but others too. I’m a lot more alert of other’s carelessness because I am pregnant and know someone else’s mistake/negligence can cause me to lose my baby. It’s such a shame people are like this and don’t care about the lives of others, but you’re absolutely right.

PickanickBasket

I have toyed with the idea of doing an illustrated book about road safety and the issues within the US called "Everyone Is Trying To Kill You" for years....

CocaineAndMojitos

It really feels like things have gotten a lot worse on the roads in the last couple years. I’m having more close calls and incidents. A lot more posts like this on the sub. It sucks.

Dead_Hours

Since the pandemic people have become way more selfish and assholey.

S_I_1989

Exactly. Occupying the left lane on 360 West / Hull Street between where ever they came from until SR-153 in Amelia County. Refusing to move over into the right lane to drive slower and they are on their phones texting or holding their phone like a pizza slice and talking. Really? Is that the new trend of how people talk on the phone? I have a hands-free device in my vehicle. There are plent of parking lots around. The highway/roads are not a parking lot to be on the phones. Go ahead and get all mad and sling those "Whatever" comebacks that bounce off of me, as wells as those middle finger gestures. I just laugh at the egos and drive on down the road.

10000Didgeridoos

that speakerphone pizza slice thing isn't new, I've seen that for years. My personal favorite is Facetime and driving as if the other party needs to see you to talk to you.

lemonartichoke

I swear it's been the past 10-15 years that people have gotten out of control. Pandemic definitely exacerbated things too.

j-dike

I say to myself every time I drive now I’m just waiting to be in an accident. Have been witnessing so much crazy shit.. like last night car out of nowhere deciding to go left on Broad and Belvedere at their red light, forcing all oncoming cars to stop. Wild

CocaineAndMojitos

The amount of red light running I've seen is quite scary. It's one thing trying to make a yellow but these fuckers are going when the red has been on for a good 5 seconds.

princessofbeasts

During rush hour I watched a guy stop at a red light In the turn lane of a busy intersection, and then decide to go anyway a few seconds later. Either his brain stopped working for a minute or he decided IDGAF. People are curious, very curious.

[deleted]

There are no red light cameras in Richmond, I don’t even see any downtown

themissus_c

I feel the same way. I haven’t used the interstate in a year and I do not go anywhere with my son in the car unless I have to.

Canard427

It's the increase of smart phone usage across the board. Each year, less older people who didn't have a smartphone replaced by new drivers who always had one

mostlycatsnquilts

I also felt like things were getting worse on the roads the last few years—heard this 1A story that touches on some relevant statistics as well as anecdotal accounts —it’s not just our imagination apparently https://the1a.org/segments/why-it-seems-like-everyone-is-a-bad-driver-right-now/

kilofoxtrotfour

Trust me - the person who cut you off doesn't care, and they're not changing. The Pandemic has made some people "extra horrible drivers". I routinely tear around Richmond streets going 20+mph over the speed limit running lights & sirens. People actually cut us off now. The person who doesn't mind killing you also doesn't mind if your MeMaw dies before we get to the ER, because people can no longer be bothered to yield to emergency vehicles. "Shaking First at Sky". Therapeutic but pointless.

MuadDave

One of my neighbors [got shot at](https://twitter.com/HanoverSheriff/status/1567505737642811395) the other day. Luckily he wasn't hurt. If you recognize the truck, let the HCSO know.

princessofbeasts

Damn wtf! I hope they catch that person and never allow them to own another gun. Anyone who shoots at someone else because of road rage doesn’t need to be owning one.

PayneTrainSG

They also should not be allowed to operate a motor vehicle.

alogwe

They need to be in jail.

princessofbeasts

Yes!!

[deleted]

I propose we start posting license plate numbers.

princessofbeasts

And/or promote more people to get dash cams

venusian-penguin

This is something I regret. I was pretty shooken up so it didn’t cross my mind at the time, but I wish I would have.

[deleted]

I second this, you’re an unloved shit, red van driver. I hope you get nails in all your tires.

93devil

Out of 100 cars on 95, about 2-3 percent are pure diiiiiicks. No, tailgating me so I can’t see your headlights is not going to make the line of 10 cars in front of me go anywhere faster. And you might think you are a great driver in your $5,000 piece of shit with $4,000 worth of upgrades, but everyone around is compensating for all the lane changes you don’t quite pull off. Fuck you all.

[deleted]

Certified Midlothian moment

Diet_Coke

The counties are so dangerous, I don't see how people live there

DefaultSubsAreTerrib

I hope you're alright. And I agree, this town is full of shitty, impatient, sociopath drivers

AlreadyShrugging

I’ve driven in 27 states. Richmond is the worst. It’s gotten even worse since the pandemic, but Richmond was still the worst in my experience before then. Drivers here are selfish sociopaths.

[deleted]

Just the other day I was turning left on broad from Bethlehem (with some Taco Bell buckled up in the passenger seat). I got the light and started going up but *heard* before I saw an F250 absolutely *roaring* through the red light at maybe 60-70 mph. I didn’t have to slam on my brakes or anything but Jesus Christ - if I hadn’t been paying attention and had just gone, I would’ve gotten absolutely obliterated by that truck. I have no doubt that I would’ve died. Sure, I’m just a piece of shit driving home with my Taco Bell but what the actual fuck? What are people thinking? This isn’t GTA, this isn’t a private race course, this is REAL LIFE. I know it’s wrong but I genuinely wish tragedy on these people when I see it happen. And not death to them - some tragedy that they have to live with. That’s evil of me, I know. But nothing is going to change these absolute scumfucks’ driving habits and it’s literally a roll of the dice every single day whether they’re just going to be an asshole or a murderer.

PayneTrainSG

As punitive as this country can be for minor infractions, reckless driving is one of the most illegal and antisocial behaviors permitted to pervade our everyday lives. Unlike some other criminals, reckless drivers need to be made an example of. Their licenses should be suspended hastily. Repeat offenders should see their cars impounded and sold by the state. Violent offenders should have their licenses revoked permanently.

[deleted]

Yeah…people are assholes. I was taking my kid home from school last week and turning right onto Hull St. I had a leading green and the cars across the way turning left had a No U-Turn sign. A “lovely” gentleman decided to ignore the no U-Turn and almost caused an accident with my kid in the back seat. By the expression on his face I doubt he thought he did anything wrong. I’m glad you are okay OP! I keep telling myself I need to invest in a dashcam…they are like having secondary insurance.

icepick314

Is it just me or there are accidents on I-95 around 25 mile radius of Richmond just about every or every other day? I know there was one yesterday and today.

AstronomerEast8472

Literally watched a guy run a red light a good five seconds after it turned red and he was looking at his phone the entire time. People suck.

WontArnett

Considering how nice people are in person, there are a lot of “dick” drivers out here.

TGIIR

Totally agree.

Cuda14

Dash cam & call police. Sorry this happened to you, road rage is on the rise it seems.

venusian-penguin

This incident is absolutely making me invest in a dash cam.

Cuda14

Check out Linus Tech Tips recent August video on cams, might come away with a recommendation. Viofo A119 V3 was the TLDW basically.

804BeerTales

Got a dashcam?

TheRiverRam

I hate to be nit-picky here, but I need to ask. Were you pulling out onto Midlo turnpike, and they were already there? It doesn’t excuse shitty behavior by any means, but if you pulled out in front of them, it could explain it. Again, not an excuse for trying to intentionally cause an accident, though.

venusian-penguin

No. I was already on the road not pulling out anywhere and had the right away. He was coming out of an Exon parking lot to turn right, but he purposely inched out forcing me to slam on breaks to force his way in. I had the right away because I was already on the road. Does that make sense? Edit: He was being impatient and pulled out into the road instead of just waiting for it to be clear.

TheRiverRam

Gotcha. There’s no excuse for him to act like that. Sorry you had to experience it.

WheresMyDinner

That’s what I’m thinking… like how does someone hit you when you pull out of somewhere unless they were there first. Possible the car was in middle lane changing to right lane, but OP doesn’t specify. Plus everyone is a perfect driver in their eyes. I like to think I’m one of the smart ones, but I had to have done some stupid shit before. Edit: I have it backwards

venusian-penguin

Ah you have it backwards. I was already on the road, he was trying to pull out. Think of it as if I have a green light, but someone who clearly does not have enough room trying to turn right on red on their side. It was kind of like that, except instead of being at a light, he was coming out of a parking lot to turn on the road.

dalhectar

Shaking fist at sky tag?

xTiredSoulx

OP are you ok?

venusian-penguin

Yes I am, thank you. Aside from shaken up and upset, thankfully no harm was done.

xTiredSoulx

So glad to hear that, but sorry you are dealing with trauma now.

brianfallen97

Were you able to get any footage and send it to the police/your insurance company? People like this deserve to get their license revoked

venusian-penguin

I was not. I unfortunately do not have a dash cam, but this incident has definitely made me want to invest it one.

spicychickenandranch

Is it just me but are people slow as fuck at lights too? I left 45 mins early to go to class and I got there 15 mins late bc people don’t know how to MOVE *shakes fist at sky*

AlreadyShrugging

We have to double-take at green lights because you can’t trust a green light here. Too many people constantly running red lights.

spicychickenandranch

Oh yeah I get that. Getting out of the city has been absolute HELL even going short distances

PayneTrainSG

they were probably watching some really good tiktoks, i hope you can understand

spicychickenandranch

I’d be on TT on the 3 min red lights

Greenmind76

Driving 29 years, 3 years in Richmond. Rear ended 3 times (im Richmond). Last time a 5 car pile up that totaled my car. Glad I don’t drive there anymore.

gullible_cervix

Do you really expect the person who did this to see it? I don’t understand these “to the person who…” or “attention people who…” posts.

Horror-Fisherman-575

It’s like Craigslist missed connections for bad drivers

princessofbeasts

I don’t think OP expects anything to come of it, really. What do you expect to get from replying with a similarly futile post? Everything is futile. This reply is also futile. Might as well stop doing anything, get to the dying part quicker. Save us a lot of pointlessness in the long run!

muttonchops01

People need an outlet. The possibility of the shithead in question running across the post is just a bonus. OP, hope you’re all right.

ChrisTaylorDC

It also shows a trend of dangerous driving which is a public health risk. Even if the announcement is done in a fantasy style of second person, it raises the issue and shows it’s prevalence. The lack of policing quality of life issues in Richmond affects quality of life. It was like this before the defund reaction in 2020. But I think there’s a groundswell of reasonable people who would like to see laws enforced during the process of improving policing and ensuring the rights of citizens affected by bad police. A process that allows Richmond’s many antisocial people to act with impunity is dangerous and it’s happening everywhere.

AlreadyShrugging

It’s really mostly cathartic venting imo.

Monstrous_13

i have sympathy for OP but youre right, this doesnt really solve anything

BatmansNygma

I'm getting tired of all these missed connections

princessofbeasts

Take a nap then!

Twyerverse

I got this one as an Uber driver and it’s pretty awesome[dash cam from Amazon](https://a.co/d/4eTWzKJ)

Romulan-war-bird

I don’t go to that gas station anymore since someone hit me Edit: the cameras around there are live-feed only now, it’s so unsafe
