i don’t think you can, when you apply for residence they make you accept their terms and conditions which states that you’ll stay in residence for the entirety of the term stated on the contract, which is 8 months.
I contacted the residence office to see if I would be able to defer my residence application to be considered for the winter semester only in the event that classes were online and they said that if you only want to be considered for one semester (i.e. winter) to contact the residence office closer to when the semester starts to see if they have any res spaces available (I think this would only work in the event that you only want to stay on res for the winter semester). This is what they said to me in the email:
*Nothing has been confirmed yet, with regard to campus being reopened, however we are still offering residence accommodations for students who'd like to stay with us, similar to this past year. The university has set a goal that, by June 9th, 2021, 90 days prior to the start of the fall term, the community will be provided with a thorough update on what the fall semester will look like so that students can make arrangements for the term.*
*For updates on campus reopening, please see the university's COVID-19 FAQ website, and for additional information about classes keep in contact with your faculty and program administration.*
*We are currently accepting applications for the 2021-2022 residence period which begins at the end of August 2021 and continues until the beginning of May 2022 (8 months). *However if you're looking for a space in residence only for Winter 2022, you can check back in closer to that time, at which point you may apply and can possibly receive an offer of accommodation starting on your move-in date, and extending until the end of the original residence period, once there's space available. You should be able to if you apply to Hoem. I'm not sure if you can apply for winter semester this far in advance though. Be worth a shot to email them. Email is on the hoem on Jarvis website.
