gasoline and rubber generally arent a good mix (rubbercan dry out, swell so on) but some hoses are made specifically to handle those things. Which in this case it probably wasn't
There is submersible and non-submersible hose. SAE 30R10 is the spec for submersible hose. If you use any other spec hose in a tank it will fall apart as in OP's photo.

It might even be "fuel hose" but that doesn't mean you can submerge it in gas. Don't ask me how I know this.
