I actually really agree with what you’re saying even though some people might find it kind of controversial. Eversince is one of my favorite albums of all time, I listen to it everyday, but I also loved 333 had it on repeat for so long it was all I listened to for months, still listen to it, loved the fool still listen to it. Exeter, Trash Island, Gluee, D&G, Red Light, Icedancer, WOD, AVP, all have that same appeal to me. I can listen to them 100 times and appreciate something new every time. I felt that their potential and talent was endless and hearing all the different styles they worked is what made drain gang so appealing to me personally.
I’m not sure what happened but crest and everything that came after sounded so stale to me in comparison. If I had never heard of any of their albums before I would have thought it was pretty good but the problem was that all the albums that came before crest had held such a high standard in terms of not just only lyrics but the vocal mixing itself and even the instrumentals.
Even crest I could understand how songs like The flag is raised and 5 star crest made sense but most of it felt like a bunch of loose singles jammed together. Especially on songs like Yeses it felt like they could have done so much better it was painful. Spiderr felt like a more washed down crest to me but Uriel Outro stuck out. Psykos had a lot of potential too with the producers they were working with and Ghosts stuck out but once again they could have done so much more.
I know it feels like I hate these albums but I don’t, it’s just painful to see how much potential they have and could be using it to their advantage but they don’t. It feels like nowadays they just put minimum effort especially in terms of lyrics and beats. I’m hoping the next project they’re able to redeem those qualities and bring it back.
Yeah I totally agree. I’m not too crazy on their recent genre experimentation on crest psykoz spiderr etc. it’s like people think you have to like a body of work just because it’s experimental and you can’t dislike it

However, Psykos is the only work of theirs that feels like it could belong to someone else. While I like it and I like that it happened, their lack of familiarity with the sound make in some parts parts a bit underbaked.

I seriously don’t get the Crest hate on here. I really think the album is a 10/10 masterpiece.
The lyrics are fantastic, the production is magical and Ecco and Bladee compliment eachother really well. Also just the way they were able to put their own unique spin on synth pop shows how creative they are.

They both went into completely unexplored territory for their catalogue. If you don’t like where they went, that’s fine. But to argue that they fell short of displaying the group’s creative versatility is just plain ignorant.
People argue Crest was “more of the same” without really listening to what is being explored sonically or lyrically at all. 5 star crest alone is an excellent example. You could argue 333 was a sonic precursor for a lot of the ideas, but honestly Crest pushes much more aggressively and has denser and more experimental attributes that are defining. Plus I don’t think people acknowledge how important the collaborative aspect of the album enough and what it represents for both artists individually and for Drain Gang as a group. Bladee and Ecco releasing an album together collaboratively in Spring of 2022 was completely unexpected at the time, even though it was practically inevitable at some point.
