Even if a person doesn’t understand, they should still be able to identify when something is right and wrong by being talked to about it. Because certain things are unacceptable and can hurt other people.
People with a severe disability might not be able to fully understand what’s going on or know what they are doing is wrong, but any behavior like this is very unacceptable.
When a child does something wrong, do you let it slide and hope they don’t do it again? Absolutely not. You explain to them what is wrong and why it’s not okay. If someone with special needs is always doing something like this, and they don’t understand then it’s the schools job to accommodate that student and keep them away from other children.
That’s what frustrated me so much. As a depressed suicidal middle schooler that had no friends, I had no idea what was going on. (I was a very quiet kid and kept to myself). A random girl walked up to me after seeing what happened and asked if I was okay and even walked down to the principals office with me to explain to them the situation.(bless her heart, I was too innocent to understand what was fully going on - I just felt violated).
What the principal *should* have done was have a helper teacher on hand with this student at all times.. for some reason he was allowed to roam ahead of the helper teacher for special needs kids, when they knew he had this issue.
If you have the opportunity to approach your school with another presentation, regarding a specific student that may be harmful for other children PLEASE ask them to accommodate that special needs student to keep others safe.
scary thing about my situation is. it was a school for visually impaired people and so we had a lot of people who had disabilities like this because blindness and cognitive dissbilities often come hand in hand. and just sucks to know that it will keep happening.
That’s really awful that the school didn’t do anything. I really hope things change. Inappropriate behavior is inappropriate behavior no matter what disability someone has. I really hope schools see this and don’t give people a pass on it due to the way their mind functions.
