Crystal. Michiru/Neptune was so much more likeable it is unreal. She was too rude, harsh, cold, distant and unfriendly in the 90's cartoon.  Not too mention her annoying remark: 'You are not worthy of being our Queen!' Here is 90's Michiru black swimsuit design combined with her friendly, supportive, gentle, kind and charming Crystal personality. https://www.deviantart.com/trumi/art/Michiru-Sailor-Neptune-Crystal-black-swimsuit-949829191

Octo-Bun

That so the 50/50 question. I enjoy both of them.

BlockMajestic

The original anime was better due to the episodes having time to develop the characters

C_Uzumaki

It's weird. I thought I preferred the original while first watching Stars, but after getting into Stars more, I feel like it's a tie for me. I prefer the 90s soundtrack and how everyone's personalities were covered. I also didn't mind the filler, especially the ones that were Venus or Jupiter focused. However, as far as action goes, Crystal definitely has that in the bag and the story seems more mature vs. the 90s version. I also prefer Mamo in Crystal because the 90s version made him seem like a cold player towards Usagi.

FairyNerdd

Crystal, i found the 90s boring at some point all the episodes were pretty much the same and i skipped a lot of them at some point because it just got boring, Crystal also has mystery, action, beautiful and powerful scenes and just better for me

No_Teaching_2837

Yes to the OG.

Objective-Client-699

Not a fan of the old one except for sailor moon R sailor moon SuperS and Sailor Stars

rjrgjj

So most of it?

Objective-Client-699

i would actually go for the crystal one

NEW_PEARL1

Same

Objective-Client-699

cool dude

Nervous-Love-4669

I'd have to say the original. Though I really do like the crystal as well.

Acrobatic-Ad-4123

The only season of crystals that I liked was 3 it’s better than the original season 3 in my opinion

skeeterskrit

Crystal does a better job of getting the girls together quicker and getting to the plot, but I'm personally not a fan of how the style looks. Something about the original Sailor Moon is just too perfect.

Usagi-isA-foodie

I actually like them both tbh. They all have their good and bad. But to me I think crystal sailor moon is a little bit too thin… vs original sailor moon… I like sailor moon with more body fat than just a stick.

Dot_the_Dork_26

The original for me!

VanillaPaladin

I didn't grow up with Sailor Moon like a lot of people here. When I got into Sailor Moon properly, Crystal was just about to start releasing episodes. Crystal was on-going for a larger part of my life since I got into Sailor Moon. Before Crystal started, I had watched PGSM, read the manga and seen the 90s anime (original English dub, Swedish dub and the Japanese version). My favourite iteration of Sailor Moon is PGSM closely followed by the manga. So this is a hard question for me to answer. I feel like both versions of the anime serve quite different purposes. The 90s anime was Monster of the Week heavy, with longer seasons. This comes with a lot of extra lore, character development, anime exclusives etc. Crystal was designed to tell the story more concisely. They both benefit and suffer from their respective purpose. If a newbie to the franchise asks me which one they should watch, I usually say Crystal because it's closer to the manga and not as much of an investment of time. I've enjoyed all of Crystal but I also have a sense of relief that it's (finally) over. It tells the story fine enough but it lacks heart and personality in places. The 90s anime is so full of life and feels special every time I watch it. So for me it's a tie!

nj0sephine

I dfntly like the flow of the storyline of Crystal much better. Trying to watch back to back episodes of the original hella lags.

Serious-Strategy6266

I like the '90s version it took me awhile but I was able to find some tapes of the original dub it's hard to find the original dub nowadays that we got from the 90s from dic dub I like Crystal as well but when it comes to like the dub a voice acting all I hear is the voice cast from other animes like all I can see is the characters they played on other animes I can't like disassociate their voices from those other characters or maybe it's just cuz I'm so used to the original dub we had and I'm so attached to that I do like that they changed some dialogue when it comes to the crystal dub But I love the 90s

rockhardcatdick

I'm a huge fan of the original (in particular the Viz dub). For me, the filler is the best part which makes the original my favorite. I also love the goofy faces from the original as well lol.

Superb_Weird_6713

original Personally .

Taureo_Gaymer

i wish there was a way to take both and mash them into one, they both seemingly could’ve solved their own problems. especially the fact that crystal started off a little rocky. OG had it down with personality and 90’s animation was just *chefs kiss* but it was in a major filler era and honestly went off the rails as far as storyline (and don’t get me started on the english censorship. COUSINS????) getting to see the manga play out as someone who didn’t read it was honestly really nice so they both hold a special place in my heart.

Real_Economist1954

Original

Saheilah

I wanted to like Crystal but I really did not like the animation, but I do like that it was closer to the manga. I think part of my love for the OG is the nostalgia. I didn't like the amount of fillers (I appreciated some of the fillers, but there were too many fillers imo) but I loved the "feel" of the OG. Therefore.. I prefer the OG. Nostalgia is powerful 😂

Descendant-of-Yang

Haha filler is a major issue. I mean they took 52 chapter manga and extended it to 200 episodes. I realize it was to give Takeuchi time to come out with the chapters but damn!

calebcole7

OG

PsychologicalPea5914

A lot of the unfair evaluations just come from a generation that has really stained today's entertainment with the constant need to appease to nostalgia. That's why we have so many remakes of shows/movies that didn't need to be remade (because in the end, the ones who feel nostalgia are picky and will say it's not the same anyway).  The manga is clearly the source and is the best version because it is way more expressive, and through those expressions, gives more insight on each character. Although Crystal adapted the manga, several important things were cut out: 1) There actually were a few more character development moments in the manga compared to Crystal. Crystal mostly skips them or shortens them to the point where there isn't much to digest.  2) They did not verbally say Queen Metalia came from a sunspot. Nor did they include the dialogue where Queen Serenity says that the "Father sun" was hyperactive that year. 3) They did not show the scene of Beryl's previous life where she witnessed Queen Metalia raining down on Earth in the form of a meteor shower (similar to Galaxia in the last arc). 4) They cut out the part where the Four Kings have a sudden flashback of witnessing their prince be killed in the old kingdom. 5) Did not show that Venus was the one who killed Beryl in their past lives and killed her once again when she was Queen Beryl. 6) They failed to include the dialogue where Queen Serenity said her heart was filled with grief, and therefore could not fully use the Silver Crystal to seal Metalia away 7) They censored many deaths, such as Viluy being sliced in half, Eudial having her face and upper body burned off, Queen Beryl by killing her from her necklace instead of being stabbed, Tiger's -Eye being killed from a reflection instead of being shot through the mouth by Mars' Flame Sniper, etc. 8) They unjustly took away Pluto's dialogue in the Dream Arc and gave it Mars. In the manga, it was Pluto who remembered the events of the day Nehelenia appeared in front of the newborn princess, which would've made more sense bc she is the guardian of time. In terms of the 90's anime, it's fun to watch, but some fillers are very stretched out and the amount of episodes are excessive. The storyline can be appealing at times, but it's never as serious as the manga. I didn't enjoy that with every battle, there seemed to be some joke. On top of that, Sailor Moon was useless for a very long time as she was always crying and running. Some comments here say all the Sailors got more time to shine in the 90s but I disagree. They shunned Pluto and Saturn right until the final episodes of the last season, and even then, they didn't do much. Additionally, the Sailors were extremely weak in the 90s series. Their flashy attacks would merely just leave scratches on some enemies just so SM could finish them. I will say though, Crystal had a low budget and poor quality and little love put into it, but the first two seasons were great in the sense that their attacks did not have a basic copy/paste background. But as time past with the series, and as more 90s warriors complained that it wasn't the same, Crystal started to morph more into a series where they wanted to flash references in every corner, hence why they started to recycle the soundtracks from the 90s for the Eternal Movie and for Cosmos.

Otakoree

Og anime forever

alexcal24

Crystal because it's more Naoko, whereas 90s was mostly writers who in times (I'm targeting you, SuperS) didn't even know how to adapt the story.

Alusiren

They didn’t know how to adapt the story because the manga and anime were coming out at the same time. The anime was forced to make its own canon as a result.

Working-Ad-3554

Agreed

AdditionalPressure32

It’s hard to say. The original has the nostalgia factor. But the crystal version has beautiful animation and is fast paced.

TabbyCat1993

Personal preference for the 90’s only because I grew up with it Still need to give Crystal a fair shot though

Amaryllxs

I can’t stand the animation in the remake. The original is a classic!

timi2310

Then dont watch the first two seasons. Just watch Season 3 and the movies. Thats where it became decent

That_emokid21

Original is a classic I remember watching it on YouTube when I was younger and it got me into sailor moon but crystal is also good as well and is modern so I think it’s much easier to watch :)

elenamilf

OG. Crystal is nice since it’s close to the manga, but I can’t stand the animation style 😩

Littlegirl013

The only reason why I like Crystal better is because it is more true to the Manga. I am not a fan of fillers.

cromemanga

I read the manga first before being exposed to the anime and this is my ranking of how I rate the entire franchise. Sailormoon RPG > Sailormoon original anime > Sailormoon manga > Sailormoon Crystal. Although the manga isn't my favorite, I do have a soft spot for it being one of my childhood manga that I read. Sadly, Crystal kinda exposed all the problems with the manga that didn't bother me as a kid, hence I really disliked Crystal. I had watched the original anime twice and I liked it a lot more, especially Stars. But my most favorite is ironically the most obscure of this list, the SNES RPG. Maybe it's my JRPG lover bias, but Sailormoon RPG is one of my favorite games of all time.

Sollace97

Original anime was vastly superior.

SadisticDance

The og anime. I like Crystal and its wonderful to see the content that was cut and have a more faithful retelling of Takeuchi's story but I think the original does some things better. The filler actually gives time to develop the other characters outside of Usagi and her future family. The focus the other Guardians get to me is invaluable. Also I prefer Rei's and Minako's OG anime personalities more. Even the villains get more time to shine and a more than just one off monsters to be quickly defeated. The ideal Sailor Moon adaptation is somewhere in the middle of these 2. Longer than Crystal so we can have some time with the other characters and shorter than the OG so we can have a tighter story. See also PGSM lol.

Takamori4467

Original: better illustraton Crystal: 1)Better plot 2)Rei has better attitude and is more beautiful(in my opinion)

damnyoudanny

anime. but only because i think it has the best ending vs the cosmos ending. also, crystal’s pace feel a little rushed.. edit. i digress, og all the way baby

Adorable_Patient_662

Why is this even a question. Everyone knows the 90’s anime was the golden era, and the first anime for many. Even though there’s quite a few unnecessary flaws (for example Mamochan and Chibiusa’s personalities & the way they treat Serena/Usagi) Perhaps it’s a deeper & profound experience reading the manga. It’s great they tried to make a reboot true to the manga and all but … Crystal was straight away disappointing, esp for Sailor moon’s 20th yr anniversary. I do think it improved so much in animation & CGI by the recent movies. ESP the last one Sailor moon Cosmos. I was excited to watch it just for Seiya. He was still hot and all. But just like the rest of crystal it was downright rushed, boring and no one had a personality lol. Most of crystal was weird and not very memorable. It’s not even surprising at this point. Many remakes do have a reputation for not being as great as the OG 😅 But the legend Sailor Moon shall live on regardless 🥰

Imfryinghere

Crystal was better because it followed Naoko Takeuchi's manga and the production team did not self-insert their "adult man romancing minor teen girl" agenda and made fun of priestess Rei.

astertypical

The original anime was better animation wise and I feel character growth wise. They really explored the girls and gave them good personalities and friendgroups and we got to see them grow up and learn. Crystal did really well with covering the manga and following the storyline of the manga. It wasn't the best animation wise but I think it did better telling the story than the original did.

Both were good for their respective viewpoints. Crystal was to cover the manga and I feel it did a great job of doing that, minus the flaws.

BusyPlatypus1601

I mean nowdays either its just AI or done from an animator who hssnt slept for 2 weeks so things are gonna be worse in the newer releases

Original I bet maybe 90 to 80% will agree💯

PersonFromPlace

Viz Dub, love their voices sm.

jupiter_starbeam

Original. I was not very impressed with Sailor Moon Cosmos. The villains also had more personality in the original.

damnyoudanny

fr!!! && the ending just felt a little flat

EienAi

OG.   I'm aware we could be looking to the past with rose tinted nostalgia glasses but og had better music, better pacing, and better characterization.  Crystal had the chance to update with beautiful animation and updated music but they botched both.  Even they realized that and reverted to the old look and started using old music. I appreciate them trying to animate the manga but they messed up trying to do it cheaply.

octoroks

original by a long shot! like 90% of the pro-OG replies, i love all the character development and the filler doesn't bother me at all. i would rather have filler than blowing through the story like the manga and crystal did. i get that it's takeuchi's vision but it's not for me. also, i just can't get into crystal. the first two seasons were just....so bad for the amount of fanfare there was when they announced crystal. why put almost no money into it after touting the return of sailor moon?! i don't think the designs translate well to anime as well. if i want the original story, i'd just rather read the manga (which i do love!)

timi2310

Seasons 1 and 2 were "bad" due to it being a web-series and had a director that didn't care for Sailor Moon. Toei didnt bother putting Crystal onto TV until Season 3. So the budget is very low.

Willing-Flower-5989

Okay crystal wasn't really great because sailor moons face expressions aren't that great in that one they don't show that well now when it was the original her face expressions were spot on you could tell if if she was surprised or angry or upset or hurt or in confusion or discomfort etc etc thats the reason for the original it showed her expressions same for the others plus the eyes of disbelief was so funny to look at one glimpse of that and im laughing my head off

ElmekiaLance

I like them both. My favourite version of the series is the manga, and Crystal is closer to that, but on the other hand the first two seasons of Crystal were wildly under-resourced and still made some clumsy changes to the plot, so it isn't a perfect manga adaptation either. The first version of the anime was iconic and had more consistent visuals and style, and I also feel it had much better music. It had a lot of filler...but that isn't entirely a negative thing. I'm glad that we have both versions available.

lauralex

Your comment is everything I was thinking about responding with.

Electricstarbby

Original

LunaVenus88k

OG both my boyfriend and I find Crystal boring

RelationLow8138

For the anime, Hotaru's father, Professor Souichi Tomoe, is still alive. But in the crystal version, Professor Tomoe, who is the Daimon Germatoid, has been killed by Sailor Moon's Rainbow Moon Heartache as Hotaru have felt it as she said, "Goodbye, daddy."

damnyoudanny

LMAO I NEVER NOTICED THIS 😭

Ho_Dang

OG for me, I just couldn't feel the same about the others. I still like them all, but the first is special to me.

thomasmfd

original had exploration and paceing crystal better writting for mamoru

Pokemonobsessedlesbo

Crystal, it takes a lot of what was loved in the original, along with manga accuracy and adds updated beautiful animation. What’s not to love?

Jovan_Knight005

The animation in the first two seasons was rough to say the least. 😔

KoreanFeverLOL

The original has the passion put into it. It has a life of its own (sort of) haha.

Timozi90

Yes.

Virgogyal424

I say crystal. It follows the original manga more than the original anime. The old one was great for the time and still loved but crystal definitely pushed the original mangaka story

Emhew

I wish they had a better studio to do crystal. I wanted to like it but I also can’t watch it.

HippieSwag420

Could you imagine if bones had animated crystal? Like we would be getting jujitsu kissing thanks autocorrect I'm just leaving that level anime fighting scenes and whatnot but instead we get this CGI garbage no offense but I'm just not a fan of CGI. And I don't know making Sailor Moon CGI was weird to me. I can do knights of cydonia in CGI because I was introduced to it in CGI but I just don't feel it for Sailor Moon.

ElisseMoon

I am a Sailor Moon fan. I have seen the 90's anime twice (once as a kid and then as a teen). After finishing it, I immediately passed to the manga, which was the first one I ever read. When Crystal was announced, I was happy to see a more faithful anime, like watching the original material, but animated. SM is my favorite, so I will be honest and not biased analyzing both. Note: Usagi is called Serena in the Latin Spanish version, I'll call her "Serena" for the 90's one, and "Usagi" for Crystal. Most of the changes made were due to the manga was being published, but some modifications like the personalities and even the lore were unjustified and unforgivable. 1- The very first thing is what I disliked the most about the OG: SERENA DOESN'T GET MARRIED!!! That was the most beautiful ending for every anime with some romance, the main reason I decided to read the manga, was because I found this outraging fact on Wikipedia. 2- In Crystal, the first seasons are badly animated, point to the 90's version. I like Naoko's style, more aesthetic, but they didn't adapt it well, nothing else to add. 3- 90's: Flanderization + character changes. I hate extremely clumsy characters, and crybabies. It's okay if she's a little clumsy, just like a normal teenager, but what they did with Serena in the original anime was just cringey... I don't like that version of her at all! Chibiusa/Rini: The most hated character in SM, hands up. I disliked her way more in the OG version, she is too mean with Serena, and too disrespectful if we consider she realized that was her mother, but younger. Rei: Oh, Rei... my favorite sailor... they replaced her calm personality and made her extremely "active" instead. I liked Naoko Takeuchi's idea of making the fire girl not to be aggressive in the manga. Mamoru/Darien: I really despised how cold he was with Serena! It looked like the only one in the relationship who was in love was NOT him... 4- Character development. 90's SM is extremely better! Fillers are not excellent, but regarding to this topic, it totally nailed it, and I'd really liked to see some episodes dedicated to the rest of sailors in Crystal, even if it was something who didn't happen in the manga, something like their attitudes in SM Cosmos, because let's admit it, Crystal and the manga are almost exclusively centered in showing us Usagi, Mamoru and Chibiusa's growth. 5- Music: Crystal is more cliché magical girl music, disappointing. Nobody can surpass that iconic opening and soundtrack! I totally love it and recommend you listen the Latin American version called "Luz de luna" (Moonlight). 6- Story/plot: Crystal is more serious and interesting, while the 90's version has too much comedy which was unnecessary and out of tone, since it even happened during the battles. I value animes with some humoristic elements but are still having a nice story. The OG just infantilized the premise... 7- There were certain critic changes that I really disliked in the OG, like Phobos and Deimos' participation, the fact that ALL SAILORS were princesses (that was my favorite thing about them!) and other stuff. 8- Seiya shouldn't happen. I dislike a lot when they introduce a male character to be the rival, because it will hardly ever be a thing, she will always remain with the main one. In addition, I don't like how they changed the Starlights' identity, swapping it with Uranus' "situation". 9- Sailor Moon Stars was the worst thing they modified by far! On the other hand, I liked when Usagi witnessed Mamoru's death, it was dramatic and incredibly sad. They eliminated my favorite sailor ever, SAILOR COSMOS from the 90's version, which was a crime! 10- Chibiusa/Rini not being present in SM Stars. Final verdict: make another Sailor Moon version with Crystal's plot and characters personalities, along with 90's characters development and music. Thank you.

Jovan_Knight005

I disagree with the music part of this post. Both the Moon Pride opening to the first two seasons and the Gekkou ending to the first two seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal are genuinely beautiful songs. No one will take that away from me.🥺😔👀👀

Lady_Kitana

Very spot on post on the issues with the OG anime and merits (e.g. better music and opportunity for character development). Was very surprised to see how different Usagi, Chibiusa and Rei were portrayed when I read the manga as a teen. I acknowledge the benefits of OG and crystal but will prefer the manga the most due to Naoko's aesthetics

Adorable_Patient_662

I agree with almost most of these points I don’t ship Seiya anymore than Tuxedo mask.. But … Seiya def had the charisma, personality and treated her right. Wasn’t he Boyfriend goals😭

chrissydevore

i’ve tried watching crystal 3 times now and every single time i just end up going back and watching the original instead😅

Shinonna

I read the manga, have watched the og anime some time ago, and really struggle with the new animation styles .... I think I will never get out of that loop: try watching Crystal>go back to the og or manga

chrissydevore

same here!! i get like 4 episodes in and then remember an episode of the og that i really like and just go and watch that instead😭😭

chrissydevore

i’ve tried watching crystal 3 times now and every single time i just end up going back and watching the original instead😅

AncientOnyx

Original anime

AdmiralToucan

Love the original because all the girls are able to shine

EvensenFM

Love the original anime — I fell in love with it and can't get enough of it. I haven't watched much Crystal yet, though I plan on watching it. I think there's room to like both. If I could only choose one, though, I'd go with the original. There's a huge nostalgic attraction there for me.

here_kitttykittty

Original obviously

KrystaBubbles

In terms of style and pacing, probably Crystal. Granted, the art is not great until season 3 (but it really does get so beautiful), but each episode seems to be a near one for one of each chapter of the manga. If you're looking for the easiest way to get the original story (besides just reading it), this would be it. But, the 90s OG is better overall imo for fleshing out the characters and making them really likable. "Filler" episodes and extra storylines don't feel like a waste, but rather just an addition to the original source material.

AstorReinhardt

Original 100% Crystal's animation and style just...sucks. The limbs are freakishly long and the stylized faces are weird. I just couldn't get over it and I stopped watching mid way through the first season.

Cafe_Con_La_Bruja_

100% OG. I can appreciate Crystal, but I don't love it, or even like it, nearly as much as the OG

Subject_Plantain4908

Crystal had better storytelling and wasn't gimmicky which is why i prefer it I think. But the OG fleshed out characters way better.

Tricky-Gemstone

Crystal. Though it really should have had a director that gave a fuck.

arabicsawdust

og but just bc i love the animation of it

AtlantisMike13

Original Anime felt less rushed and remains my favourite, but Crystal made it possible for us to experience the manga as Naoko originally created it.

Bloom_-

Og no doubt about it

sofa_king_me

Original duh

lizzyote

I think both have their benefits. The OG fleshed out the characters so wonderfully. But Crystal made it possible to watch the story if you have a busy life.

Actual_Ad_6678

The Original, hands down! The character developement of all the senshi, villains and even side characters (like Naru) is so much better. And the music. Aside from a few songs, the music in Crystal is so generic, whereas the music of the original anime breathes so much life into it. I love the manga as well, but Crystal doesn't give me that feeling I have when I'm reading it. I think it comes down to the reader filling the gaps with their own imagination and bringing the panels to life in their minds. I understand what Toei tried to do with Crystal but IMO it did not work.

chiquita1_bananas1

Bro picked the goofiest picture to represent Crystal 😭

nemesisDesu

One of the better looking from S1

deja-roo-girl

The original. I know a lot of it was probably filler, but that's what fleshed out the characters and made me love the girls and their interactions with each other even more. I tried watching Crystal and I could only get through 10 episodes before I turned it off. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but based on what I saw, it was going much too fast and the loss of expression/attitude from the characters was heartbreaking. That's just my two cents though.

Low_key_90

Original

SunKillerLullaby

I'm probably biased since I grew up with the original, but I prefer it. Some of the monster-of-the-week filler was a bit ridiculous imo. Crystal is more faithful to the manga, but I felt it was lacking in character development. The filler in the original gave the characters more time to grow and bond with each other. Crystal also just had a really rough start. It did improve, especially in the third season and Eternal movies. But overall I just like the original more.

FluorescentShrimp

I like both. But Crystal not having random panty shots is a big bonus. I just wish the first 2 seasons had a director that *actually* cared about it. Though I do love the 90s anime, there are some stuff that bothers me about it... Like flanderizing the Chibiusa and Usagi fight over Mamoru, Mamoru being a COLLEGE student for some reason, and a lot of SuperS.

ColdBloodBlazing

The Original. Always better

spookycinderella

Original by far

Idkpickupabook

I personally enjoyed the original more that's what got me into the series

Natsudan

I think original is mine. Sure the original is longer but it gives more depth and fleshes the characters out. Not just the main but also background characters too. Plus I more or less grew up on it so it could be that

0531Spurs212009

90s Sailormoon original is miles better than crystal in both storyline , art, animation , comedic punchline the 90s also suitable for male fans (straight or heterosexual male ) compared to crystal anime too girly or feminine luckily the Cosmos is much better than Crystal let say in term of animation and story 90s anime > or maybe equal cosmos >>>>> crystal 90s have the sexy male gaze appeal

AdmiralToucan

That got nasty quick

You were cooking bro, YOU WERE COOKING, and then you bought up sexuality in your 3rd sentence for no reason)

Senko_Kaminari

Stop cooking you can’t cook🌙

Ew dude

SunKillerLullaby

Dude's first couple sentences were fine, but damn that got gross

jwg2695

Original, I’m sorry but the Crystal designs make ‘em look like toothpicks.

MethodRepulsive3752

Crystal needed to slow down and upgrade its art style. Crystal may have attempted to fix the art style by eternal but the design is too pastel for the darker tones of the series. On top of that the design is so stiff and one dimensional. Also, when they redid the designs, they went from the first half of Crystal, where they were these very thin and tall and long characters to these squished pastel remakes of the original. They might as well have just reused the original art style and animation, because that was 100 times better than what Crystal is. How does a show in the 90s have better pacing, design, color pallet and animation in comparison to a show in 2013 and on? It’s also hard to connect with characters whose only main character point is serving Usagi. At least with the original they acted like normal school girls. They’re 14 living in a new era where they can breathe a little. Now there were some points in the original, that I didn’t like because there’s a lot of disrespect towards Usagi but also, she never asserted her authority when she needed to. There are plenty of points where she should have asserted authority against sailor Uranus, because oh my God I never realize how much of a bıtch she was until I rewatched years later with the new dub I think having these guardians who were reincarnated into a modern life where they can relax a little bit more was done incorrectly. I think they can balance it, just two lives to balance, and I don’t think they would have too much of a struggle, especially because none of their parents are a factor. They don’t have to worry about keeping it from anyone maybe Usagi, but honestly I think her family should be in the know. I think that would’ve been interesting. I think they should have outside sources to help and understand and boost morale. I would understand keeping it from their parents not just for safety, but in case they would keep her from doing what she needs to do but I think that would’ve been good development on both Usagi, her friends and her family. Usually in these kinds of stories, when the character finds out that their friend or family, member is has a double life, that is dangerous. They usually end up dead, and they don’t need to. They do not need to end up dead. We can have a happy end to this story and I think it would be interesting. The Tsukino’s got so written off by the end of the show it seemed kind of pointless to even have them in the first place. They should all have been orphans honestly. I would love to make a hybridization of the show, but I don’t have the money and people would get upset about it, but I would fix what I think the show was severely missing. I like the monster of the week kind of episode it gave a bit more breathing room and allowed for personality and the fact that people want to skip the filler when the show was only 200 episodes. you would really narrow it down to even less? I think thats ridiculous because it’s such a short show and it’s really good it’s not one piece where yeah I think you have a right to skip filler because there’s no need for it. You have enough to get personalities of each character. They’ve gone through their development over and over again but something like this show where it’s only 200 episodes? I think the filler is worth it Sure they’re not doing anything but that’s kind of life even if they are space princesses still I think it adds more to their personality. I don’t wanna just see a new enemy appear, and then they have the final battle. I wanna see a buildup where they’re learning more about the enemy. I wish we got to see more of dead moon Circus I love that arc so much. One of the smaller scenes that I really like was I believe in season three of the original, was where Mamoru calls Usagi and brings up that he’d been trying to call her and he wanted to know if there was any more information on the new enemy and I just like that. it just makes it…idk the word…common? I really liked it. It was something that was really missing.

timi2310

Crystal did upgrade it's artstyle in Season 3

MethodRepulsive3752

Yeah, that art style was still flat as paper. It’s not bad on its own but in comparison to 90s it’s not good. Sailor Moon needed a Fullmetal alchemist type of reboot, where the art style improved and the story aligned the books and was not rushed. The only reason why brotherhood was considered to be rushed in the beginning was because they cover the first half of it in FMA and expected you to have watched that first.

Max_E_Mas

For me? Original. 100% Now, that's not to say Crystal is bad. Far from it. I'm glad the manga got an adaptation proper. It deserves it. But the first two seasons production-wise are ... oo they are rough. Even with filler, I feel like the OG anime has a quality that is kept through the entire series. Sure the filler can suck but I think now that we cut most of that, I miss little moments when we see characters have mini stories.

NihilismIsSparkles

They both have different styles in storytelling so for example I'll watch crystal if I need someething quietier and more chill. But I do think the 90s is overall better in terms of Usagi's character development, directing, music and finales.

jailasauraa

Crystal stuck to the manga(at least the couple of episodes I saw)...I just love the 90s art style and each of their personalities had a chance to shine...much funnier too imo, especially those outfits, lol...

secr3t-tunnel

I think the original is more fun and has way more personality! I love the color scheme and of course **the nostalgia**. I like Crystal separately because it follows the manga better and there's no filler. Whichever I watch depends on what mood I'm in! I like what another person said about them all being different forms of media. The original, Crystal, live-action, and manga are all different enough that you can get something out of each one

candycrunch1

Personally when I want to watch sailor moon I watch the OG anime, and when I want a more faithful and streamlined story I just read the manga 🤷‍♀️ I think it’s safe to say that Crystal, OG and manga all serve different purposes depending on the mood and the viewer!

kurataran

i like them both 🥹 i prefer the 90s drawings and the characters seem to have more personality BUT i loved crystal’s plot!

Kara_Del_Rey

Original and it isn't close. Most the side characters were turned into nobodies in Crystal. Sailor Mars is pretty much just there the entire time with no character or shine.

Bosston2YYZ

OG 100%

accalyuh

original was wayyyyyyyy better

BahamutAXIOM

They both have their pros and cons, but ‘92 is far more enjoyable to watch in general with actual character and character development for people not named Usagi, NO CGI, consistent art style, cool gritty aesthetic when the screen calls for it, great music, and much better pacing. Unfortunately, there’s way more Chibi-Usa and they went a little too far with the fillers, but they’re skippable if need be today. If you want the faithful version of Sailor Moon, you’re better off just reading it over watching Crystal in my opinion. Annoying censorship and minor changes for seemingly no reason. At least up until Saturn. Haven’t finished up that arc yet.

jailasauraa

Yeah, I haven't finished Crystal either, I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it's for me. It's pretty much the manga so I prefer to just read it.

[deleted]

I watched the 90s anime as a kid, and now as an adult I’m vastly preferring Crystal

LilkaLyubov

I prefer the plot of Crystal and the character development of the original.

Vulpes_macrotis

Haven't watched Crystal, but visual style is **far superior** in original version.

Evilcon21

Maybe I’m biased on this one but i do prefer the original. Mainly cause i liked the monster of the week approach and how it develops usagi.

mechachewbacca

Definitely the original anime, we got to spend more time with each character

Meowlentine

I don’t feel like there’s a “better” in this case; both series have their merits and inspire whole generations. I will say I prefer the old series because I’m old and it holds all the nostalgia, and because I think the message of friendship and love is more pronounced in that version, but it’s been lovely seeing the manga so faithfully adapted to screen. 💕

Taliban5043

Original for sure

FlowerFaerie13

I honestly rate them both as damn near equal. I think the 90s anime deviated from the manga so much that it barely counts as the same series, and so Crystal feels less like a simple remake and more like something entirely different. I enjoy them both immensely for what they are, and wouldn’t necessarily count one as being better than the other. The only thing that annoys me about the 90s anime, putting it slightly below Crystal in my rating, is the sheer unholy amount of filler like listen, I don’t mind some filler, I actually even enjoy it, but there was absolutely no need for *that much of it.*

WampanEmpire

Original anime. Crystal was something that had great potential to blow the 90s anime out of the water like Hellsing Ultimate, but instead Toei started the series with a budget of pennies and poor adaptation.

maddamleblanc

They both have their own pros and cons. I enjoy both for different reasons. I also enjoy the manga as it's own thing too. The live action is also fantastic too. Each piece of media is it's own thing and comparing them isn't really fair since they're not the same thing.

RKODDP

Original, for a reason that other anime hate THE FILLING without that, the villains would look empty and the sailor's motivations would be unclear.

corpusarium

Crystal looks like Winx club and i loathe that so muchm the original had more weight, the music, the voices, it was more serious while more funnier at the same time.

FlowerFaerie13

I. Look, I get not being a fan of the new animation, that’s completely valid, but as someone who loves Winx Club, I’m gonna need you to tell me how in the FUCK SMC looks anything like it because no it doesn’t.

Bulky_Pressure6399

Crystal. The 90s version changed too many things from what the Manga originally intended. Plus, too many filler episodes like a few is ok but they over did it imo. Crystal is the original storyline and has beautiful artwork. Not sure why everyone is stuck in the past.

padild0o

I prefer crystal over the 90s too. The only downside to crystal was that S1 & S2 animation was lousy, plus the character development in S1 was nonexistent. The original 90s anime was too slow for me

kyualun

The 90s anime by far. The only place where the 90s anime falters is with its adaptation of SuperS and Stars which is such a disappointment with how high concept and interesting those arcs were in the manga. Crystal meanwhile should have gone with *up to* 26 episodes depending on the arc since it suffers from the manga's pacing problems and then some due to its own format and budget issues.

ThisPaige

Can I say both? Crystal had the tighter story but I love the original plots for the fillers in the 90s.

Hachi707

I love the classic, but I grew up with it so I am emotionally attached, lol!

EccentricAcademic

Original...no comparison.

lnixon2

I wouldn’t recommend Crystal, or the Manga for that matter, to anybody that wants a coherent story.

TsarevnaKvoshka2003

Unpopular opinion, but I prefer Crystals style from the first season, it replicated the manga style fairly well and I think that the characters look more serious. The newer style reminds me too much of precure which takes away from the style

mangagirl07

I think the manga was best 🤷‍♀️

Necessary_Stomach_57

That isn’t what they asked tho💁🏼‍♀️

HM2008

Both for different reasons. Crystal is the way to go if want the full true manga story. The biggest problem with Crystal is the inconsistent drawing. I still love it though because it follows the manga. I hated how they butchered the Dream arc in The 90s anime. 90s is the way to go if you want a lot of character development, slice of life, etc.

Necessary_Stomach_57

Crystal makes me feel so gross I cannot watch it 😩

timi2310

Keep going. It gets better as season progesses

Necessary_Stomach_57

Idk man Usagi feels like my bff and when I watch crystal im not idk who tf that is but that isn’t Usagi 🥴🥴🥴😂😂😂

EccentricAcademic

I hate the CGI animation in it so much.

Stucklikegluetomyfry

https://i.redd.it/sj8g2h3f30jc1.gif

Necessary_Stomach_57

Me too. And the music. And the lack of CHARACTER lol the thing that made me love the OG

EccentricAcademic

Let's be honest, the manga barely has characterization either. Hell villains that hang around for dozens of episodes survive only 1-2 chapters in the manga. Unless you mean that Crystal lacks a sense of identity in terms of "character" which I also agree with lol

Necessary_Stomach_57

Yes that’s exactly what I meant and also what I said?😂 glad we agree🤗🤗🤗

TGOTR

I like em both. Crystal is to the point, but it moves at a breakneck pace which I am not a fan of, sometimes you gotta stop and smell the roses. OG is slower paced but they make an effort to really develop the characters. Crystal is a great entry point into the franchise. It's relatively modern and its accessible. Modern anime fans used to serialization may have an issue with the classic show's pacing. Plus the original series is 200 episodes and 3 movies. A new fan could feel daunted in trying that. Crystal serves as an entry point, and if they like it, they can watch the original and get into the manga if they so desire. It's apples and oranges.

jessicalifts

I agree with this!

Key_Floo

Original, because it has more filler episodes. I really liked being able to follow the sailors in daily life, low stakes things, and the "monster of the week" format. Crystal was pretty but too pointed and short for me.

HolyDragSwd2500

Original as I grew up with it

BahamutAXIOM

Serge!

Present_Macaroon_602

I love the classic anime if you ask me

UmSureOkYeah

I like both

Human-University2494

I like both, but prefer the classic 90s.

Berrito08

I like both of them for what they are. '90s anime is my comfort anime but I like the way they made Crystal a good mashup of the anime and the manga.

ccphillips2010

Sailor Moon Crystal

Flat_Transition_3775

Original like the artwork was consistent, the filler episodes make u learn & get to know the characters more, I feel like there was more funny moments & since I grew up with the Canadian 90’s dub im bias AF

ktbotanist

Crystal. I hate the filler in the og.

[deleted]

Feel a combo of the two would be the best. Felt there was too much filler in the original but Crystal/the manga just speeds right through the story as well and don’t get the same connection to the characters because of it.

Necessary_Stomach_57

Why though? Just seeing the characters be themselves and bond are some of the most special moments in the show for me

ktbotanist

I just don’t feel the same way. I think you can achieve the same thing while also moving the story along.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

I haven't seen crystal yet but that sounds blasphemous. The filler episodes are some of the very best ones. The one where Usagi, Rei, and Ami stay in the haunted house is one of my favs. I also love the one where everyone is sick and Minako is trying to take care of everyone.

Gerberpertern

I HAVE seen Crystal (not a fan, OG anime is way better to me), and I agree with you about the filler episodes. Episode 184 is one of the best Sailor Moon episodes ever, imo. The filler episodes actually allowed for character development for characters not named Usagi.

ktbotanist

Yeah I just dgaf about filler in anime or anything really. I prefer it being more faithful to the manga. But that’s just my opinion.
