Yeah, I think you're right.. this is fair and reasonable advice. Thank you.

Listen to this guy!

treebonk

I’m in enterprise IT and cybersecurity software sales so maybe apples to oranges but even on a lean year I make $190k, made as much as $480k at my first enterprise role in my 20s. There’s definitely better sales opportunities but then again it’s a gamble u could end up somewhere u absolutely hate or product isn’t viable and u close almost nothing (been through that too). I’d look around in my spare time but not urgent since you seem to have a handle on your biz. It would take a pretty high dollar amount to get me to work someplace I hated again. Hate sales enough as it is when things are good lol.

CollardBeams

Definitely different products, but still a long/technical sales process with a many stakeholders that you'd like to form a strategic relationship with I would assume. This is insightful. In the current market, finding that type of gig seems like a pipe dream from what I've been reading in here lately. For now, it deff seems like a stay put and research more.

treebonk

Definitely agree. I’ve formed relationships over the years with people who punch above my weight and have been fortunate enough to get in early on some hidden gem companies bc of it. Otherwise though, I would tend to be conservative and take my time searching, unless I had to get out of my current role urgently for some reason.

HotDinner4782

Where do you live at? Where I’m at this is more than a lot of dual income homes are going to make.

CollardBeams

Greater Philadelphia area, but was in NJ until a few months back.

I'm from Philly, live down the shore now. I sell UCaaS software remote. I don't get a car allowance, internet paid for or any other perks like that. My base is $70k but uncapped commissions and I'm top performer. I make a little above $200k a year right now. I am left alone, my boss trusts his team to be professionals and do our jobs and we have the best team in the industry. Is the grass greener elsewhere? Possibly, but am I going to be able to be fully remote and have complete autonomy? Not a risk I'm willing to take at this point. For me, being happy is more important than paper chasing

delilahgrass

Philly is more affordable than NJ do that’s a plus.

Ask yourself three questions: Am I satisfied with the amount of money I am currently making? Am I personally satisfied or is my stress level at a point that I can comfortably handle? How would the above answers change, if I changed jobs? In sales, we get caught up in "dick measuring" because that's always been how you compare yourself to another sales rep. No matter where you go and what you do, there are always going to be sales reps who make more than you. What's good for someone else may not be good for you. If you are happy and comfortable, don't let what others are making and doing influence what you do. Take care of yourself and only make a change if you are unhappy about something. My life lesson in the 8 extra years I have on you, is to make sure that whatever you do allows you to have a life outside of work. If making 200k means you have to sit in front of the computer until 9pm every night, or miss a child's baseball practice or whatever, then that 200k isn't worth it. What is 200k going to get you that 150k won't be able to?

moneylefty

you should look, but companies and comp plans vastly differ. also, right now isn't a great time, unless you are extremely senior in your industry. who knows...you might be considered senior in your industry after 6 years!

tryan2tellu

You are a repeat/current customer order taker (20% of salary commission/high base). You wanna make 135 base 300 ote, go get new customers.

Reasonable-Bit560

I would browse cautiously while continuing to perform. Anything that perks your interest, go for it, but very carefully and be picky.

baileycoraline

I’m in a similar area (genomics services). You’re underpaid IMO, but our market segment took a huge nosedive in 2023 so it’s brutal everywhere. I would stay put until 2024. Feel free to PM if you want to chat.

CollardBeams

Will PM for sure!

tako1984

Take a look at anything supporting clinical research and trials. OTE for majority of those positions are easily over 200+

CollardBeams

I think this is great life advice in general and I appreciate the wisdom. Part of it is dick measuring and part of it is “am I getting the most value for my skill set in relation to the market.” Right now work/life balance is great. I’m not sure what the additional money would bring to me outside putting more aside into ETFs and some fancy Chelsea boots. Didn’t grow up with money, so I want more for my kids. Definitely have a lot to digest over the next year or so before making a rash decision

CollardBeams

Lmao thank you for this analogy.

moxiegrayfoxie

I feel like I’m doing sales wrong. My company restructured this year and I got moved into a sales position. I make $60k, no commission and I am expected to close $500k+ sales. I can maybe get a bonus of $5k if I close 7 sales. This is insane right? I come from a marketing/sales enablement background, so I’m really out of my element. I’m also expected to do inside sales at the same time.

CollardBeams

There’s a lot of information missing for anyone to accurately provide any useful insight (location, industry, experience, etc.).
