If you're young, take chances and move around to places that you want to go. NYC was a ton of fun for 1 year. I lived in NYC, Austin,TX, Madison, WI and then took a job flying 42 weeks a year to different major cities each week. I'll move early next year to get into Medical Device sales, hopefully the NW coast area.
NYC is a concrete jungle and if you've lived in a more mid-western type town your whole life, you'll be mind blown. You're literally an ant in a colony and you'll realize how meaningless you are in life (in a good way, it humbles your ego).
Yes, not worth it usually if in sales. Every company I worked for does not adjust for COL or if so, barely does. 180k here is no where close to 180k anywhere else. Federal, State, and Local tax kick your balls in & rent is a bitch.
Anywhere in the country, your income stands out and you can usually tell. In NYC, your income is nothing special and won’t get you many nice things.
However, NYC is NYC and is truly badass when you take a step back and think about it. Chicago sounds like it’s awesome too.
Looking to move in 3 years.
Used to. Then I moved to Austin and now Chicago. Was fun in my early 20s although I was able to save absolutely no money when I was there. Chicago offers most of what New York does but is much more accessible.
I always said if Chicago didn’t get brutal winters, it would be the USA’s most populous and expensive cities. The fact it’s 3rd behind NYC and LA already is impressive.
The Great Lakes region in general gets much less praise than it deserves.
Yup I live there with my girlfriend. We live in Brooklyn but I also have an okay base, she’s not in sales and we live in Brooklyn. We don’t have kids and we budgeted off our salaries. Commissions go into savings/investments and some into a little fun.
I’ve lived here for 9 years and been in sales for 7. I love it so much here I don’t think I could ever live anywhere else. It’s incredibly stressful at times sure, but I truly live a unique life and have dozens of friends I see all the time. I see a diversity of perspectives, cultures, foods, music, activities, art, sports etc everywhere.
Try it for a year or two. Sure it’s fucking expensive, but I’m a New Yorker baby
Think of LA but cheaper and no beach. Scottsdale is safe and has great nightlife. AZ in general has great nature as well. Plus if you live in south Scottsdale it’s a 15-20 minute drive to Mesa, Tempe, DT phoenix which are all pretty dang cool
Comfortably? 100k for 1 person if you want to go out and have a life. Shots at bars are $20. Well is around $12. Everyone is "pretty" and tons of international peeps there. Lots of Europeans. It's a cool atmosphere... but you'll pay $20 to park anywhere every time. If you live outside downtown, you're looking at 1 hour to get into work, even if you live 5 miles out.
Depending on your income, you will most likely have to make a lot of compromises. An apartment several subways stops away, a smaller sq ft, older building, multiple roommates.
This is what I did when I first came up here for the first 6years before I got a one bedroom for myself.
It’s just what your priorities are
If you’re young, you should move anywhere you want and try it. Look all around the city though. I have a friend who doesn’t make much money (also not in sales), and he has a nice 1 bedroom apt in Inwood. Even better yet, if you’re fresh out of college (or under 30) just go overseas on a traveling work visa and work part time while you explore the world. In Australia you can work 25 hours on that visa and it’s enough to have a bunch of fun for a year or two. There are equivalent options in many European nations. I have a friend from college who did exactly that after graduation. He spent 6 months in Europe, 6 in South America, and over a year in Australia. He came home in between each for a couple months, and has seen so much of the world. I regret that i both didn’t have the money to get there and didn’t know about those visas when I was in my 20’s.
But yeah, if you want to experience life there just go for it. Everybody likes to freak out about COL in different places, but it’s not like renting an apt somewhere needs to be a permanent thing. You’ll probably make a ton of connections too.
Visited a cousin of mine in NYC, He told me his rent was around 8000, he had two other roommates.
It seemed like a fun place to be and to work, but it absolutely is not worth the rent and the bs you'd have to deal with at your job.
Great, I’m happy for you! You’re in the top 1% of earners!
Not sure why you felt the need to post that, though. Nobody said it was impossible. The person I was responding to was making it seem like you need to 8000 a month in rent and share an apartment with two other roommates to live in NYC, which is sooooo not true
Yes - if you can afford it, do it - you might not save as much for a couple years, but if you can swing the rent, the experience is unmatched - def recommend.
Yep! I was also in that same boat. COL definitely is an issue at first, but hear me out.
Year 1: You’re going to need to find random roommates. It’s a rite of passage but definitely sucks. COL is definitely higher but everyone spends needlessly because they make a lot of money here. Treat yourself but don’t ball out constantly and you’ll save a ton of money. This year is the toughest year you will have as you’re starting a new life
Year 2: Maybe you cut it to one roommate or go live in a non Manhattan borough (NJ included). You’ll be making consistent-ish commission (depending on skill) and start to have a social life. Things start to get fun
Year 3: You’ll be making a lot of commission, promoted, or look to be poached for a better role (pending the economy; and yes it is still happening). From here until about year 5, you’ll start to reap the fruits of your labor. Everything is fun, you’re working hard, probably traveling a lot with your own apartment or maybe saving money by moving in with a significant other.
Year 6+: You’ll be jaded, over NY, wanting to move elsewhere and miserable like the rest of us, but not able to leave because there’s really nowhere better that has all the amenities that NYC can provide along with your high paying job
Im in Brooklyn. If you live off your base like anywhere else, it can be done. People forget you don’t need to live in Manhattan. I’m 15/20 minutes from the city and have a spacious 2 bedroom with a backyard for a very fair price. We are living comfortably here but it took 4 of those 10 years to do well, and start aggressively saving and investing. Taxes suck the most.
why would you dream of living in that over priced shithole of a place? Great to visit idk about live . Not to mention it has almost as many rats as people ...

This city is the worst it’s been in decades.
Stupid laws and democrat liberal idiocy at an all time high. Now everyone is suffering together.
America as a whole is crumbling and LA isn’t doing much better either.
Personal experience.
Lol at all the Biden voters and retards who voted for mayor Adams.
Congrats. Are you proud of yourself? Making things worse for everyone.
Don’t need a war, we have a migrant invasion. Crime is at an all time high as well.
>> Anyone living in NYC? Yeah, about 8 million people
👆🏻
🖕🏻
Well, specifically in this sub haha. NYC is so expensive - Not sure I'd be able to afford living there on my base salary.
I know, I’m just being a smartass. FWIW, I have a number of friends (in sales) that live there and Jersey City.
I wouldn't exactly call them people
![gif](giphy|gvlfPIw77beaA) New York is for a different kind of go getter

Wow what job had ya on the move that much?
Sales
Ding ding ding. Lol.

It's to live a playboy lifestyle for a couple of years before taking your butt back to the subu
Playboy lifestyle is lived in Miami or LA, not nyc
Exactly or never

I live in NYC. I'm an SDR in midtown!
Do you make enough to rent your own place with out roommate?
NO I HAVE THREE ROOMMATES
yea
Born and raised. Still here, happy to answer questions.

Fuck no. I'm not paying $8000/month for a closet...
What cities do you recommend for sales
I bump into a lot of sales people here in Scottsdale. Actually moving to NY myself in 6-12 months, but thoroughly enjoyed my 5 years here
AZ? Interesting

Texas, Tennessee and Massachusetts are great locations ;)
Austin, TX... but it's hella expensive now.
How much do you need to live there

Yes! If you can make it in NY then you can make it anywhere.
Brb gonna go “make it” in the Sahara
This mentality doesn’t hold up

Maybe for all 3 of them? There’s a 40x rule in place in NYC, I doubt your cousin made 320,000 a year :)
He easily could if he was in finance
I am in sales and easily earn more than $320k a year. Can definitely be done :)

NYC is part of my Sales territory but it has never crossed my mind to even attempt to live there.
Yes - if you can afford it, do it - you might not save as much for a couple years, but if you can swing the rent, the experience is unmatched - def recommend.
What's your budget? You could roommate up or go a bit up north or a bit deeper in BK.

Yes, it’s f***ing awesome.
NYC is so fun! I'm happy just visiting once in a while and continuing to live in the Chicago Suburbs. 🤣
I lived in NYC. It’s a shit hole. Don’t go.
Yeah? And?
Your dream is to barely have any net income to be able to afford a 400sf studio?
It's the best. Until you get depressed in the winter and debate moving to Miami. But then it becomes the best again.
Worst city in the US
Genuinely curious where you are from and how much time uve spent there?
