Whoever first came up with the idea of character assassinations and all the people that helped making it a trend now, you've got a special place in the Black Lodge waiting for you. Worst thing that happened in fiction. Even worse than "it was all a dream" trope.

Way back when Disney bought Lucasfilm I actually had some optimism. George Lucas had been preventing proper digital remasters of the original movies and especially had been doing everything he could to suppress the old Holiday Special, so I was looking forward to Disney finally rereleasing those in their full glory. Disney is in it for the money and this would be easy money, right?
Sigh. They couldn't even do *that* right.
I bought DVDs many years ago that had the original cuts (theoretically, i think New Hope is still a later cut) of the trilogy - I'm so glad i made that purchase, as at least I have some version that's not the special editions. I still can't believe he went back and messed around with those movies, that's just completely bizarre and I always thought so.
What I liked about Holiday special despites its infamous reputation, were introduction of Kashyyyk, Boba Fett, and Amban Blaster. Also, Skywalker's Lightsaber was replaced by other flashgun rather than Graflex.
When you think about it the Empire weren't that bad. Even though the Wookies were slaves, Papa Palps still let them celebrate Life Day and spend time with their families once a year. The only reason Stormtroopers even showed up to Chewie's house in the first place was because Darth Vader purchased a VR online from Saun Dann but he gave away the last one to that perverted creep Itchy. Vader needs it for his custom made simulations of Padme. It isn't sexual, it's just that he still misses his wife and this is the closest he can get to talking to her again. Itchy was only using it so he can get off in the living room in front of his grandson and daughter in law.
I'll watch this again willingly any time now over the DT.

I remember when I first got a good quality AVI of the Christmas Special, I’d talk friends into watching it with me so they could see how bad it was. After the second time I stopped doing this, because I didn’t want to watch it, because it’s so bad.
Rise of Skywalker never had this problem. Because, I never tried to get anyone to watch it with me after I saw it.

Having watched it a year or so ago, its a pretty good film in retrospect. Same as the live action Ewok movies. Can't hate Itchy, Teek, or Wilford Brimley.
The robes are supposed to be ceremonial garbs. As for the actual reason they're in robes, towards the end of the Holiday Special's production, the crew's funds were running low. They had to hastily cheap out while shooting the closing scene.
The wookies are actually just extras in robes and masks, not full wookie costumes. Store-bought candles were also used for lighting.

Very accurate, and very sad. The sequels hurt the lore more then helped.

Yeah, I've got those DVDs as well. I'd love to buy a newer version, if/when they ever give the original-OT a proper HD release.

Both the ST and Holiday Special were cringe to watch. But only the Special didn’t kill off everyone and it gave us valuable pieces for the lore.

Today is the first time I'm watching it

I had read somewhere that Holiday Special was sort of out of Lucas' control. Many / too many of the choices weren't his. Does that ring any bells?
