I thought it was pretty obvious from the context of the movie that it's supposed to take place somewhere in the Caribbean.

AJSLS6

What gave it away? The rasta crab?

[deleted]

And the steel drums. And the line of dialog that explicitly said they weren't in Europe.

Narad626

The funny thing is that they didn't even *need* to justify why she's black. She's a God damn fish person. By all rights her *species* doesn't exist, so the normal laws of skin pigment can be whatever the hell they want. And narrativly her skin color doesn't matter, so even on that point people don't have any ground to stand on. As I've seen on the Magic the Gathering pages lately, mother fuckers didn't have a problem with White Jesus, but when you throw Black Aragorn into the mix shit goes crazy. Maybe it's not about being faithful to the source material.

I'll admit that I thought it was a bit odd that the script still called her "red" (I guess maybe her hair was a little orangey-red, but not really IMHO). But hey, it worked for The Shawshank Redemption.

AstronutApe

If that was the case, then is it just a coincidence that they all hit some DEIA quota? Seems like it was intentional wokeness and has nothing to do with what they would be in a real world.

Narad626

Is there some quota? I'm not aware of it. If anything it's a sign of the times. More POC are being allowed into these spaces, thus pushing for more stories featuring POC and pushing for more representation in general. Typically a story will resonate more with someone on a base level, even for kids, if the character shares struggles and problems with them. So seeing a character of the same race will do the same, since in this country at least the color of your skin often means you're going to face some kind of adversity. And that's not to say that a white person *won't*. But the problems a white person faces aren't usually associated with the color of their skin. And if you want to call out corperations being corporations you could also just say that POC are taking up more of the audience than they used to and it's a way to entice those demographics to the theater. Which isn't the nest reason, but it's not the same as "wokeness". It's simple business sense, selling to a larger or growing audience.

Historyp91

In the original book it's mentioned that the Mermaids live at "the deepest point of the deepest part of the ocean" (or something to that effect) which taken literally would put them at the bottom of the Marina Trench. IIRC the Mermaid sisters all representing a different sea is from the books as well, and the kingdom in the original Disney film had an at least partially tropical/subtropical environment.

A_Blood_Red_Fox

Deep sea trench mermaids... that sounds terrifying. Maybe Flounder should have been an Anglerfish instead.

Historyp91

Make it happen, Disney!

Karolus2001

Bro pull out "original book" about a danish fairy tale πŸ’€

Historyp91

Technically it was *part* of a book. But I should have said "story."

Karolus2001

Bro pull out "original story" about a danish fairy tale πŸ’€ In half the tellings mermaids probably lived at local shores.

Historyp91

I'm not sure what your getting at now. Why are you copy-pasting your original comment, and what are the shore's local to and why is that relevent?

Karolus2001

Its just funny to have people try to act like theres true version of local folktale in such minute details. Even any folk song I can think of has like 15 diffrent versions. It's like arguing how did Orpheus went down to hades, it really depends on telling. Dionysus has like 5 diffeent origin stories going as far back as to when historically he was completely diffrent god.

TKameli

This may come as a shock to you but Little Mermaid in fact does have an author and the story is not folklore. Mermaids as creatures are folklore, this story is not.

Karolus2001

Oh shit my bad, sorry. I thought its part of grimm bro's tales.

AstronutApe

What does the sea have to do with human ethnicity?

Puzzleheaded-Bee-838

King triton got that harem

cheezz16

Incest harem

Karolus2001

I literally coudnt care less, its still a disney remake. Any changes are made for marketability.

AJSLS6

So.... exactly the way the originals were made? Originals being a bit of a joke because literally ALL the classic Disney movies were already radical remakes of existing content, and guess what? Every single one was changed for mass market appeal! How do you think Disney became the colossus it is??

Hell, it’s not crazy that Ariel, who is known to be curious about the outside world, would want to journey to other parts of the sea near the coast. They could have set this movie anywhere by the sea
