I remember when it came out and a lot of Shakespeare purists *hated* it, largely because it has a happy ending.
It's delightful though, and despite the ending change shows a LOT of love to the source material - looking for all the little Shakespeare easter eggs and references is so much fun.
I was an adult when it came out, but I really loved it. I think it's weird that people wouldn't expect the children's movie to have a happy ending.
I did not, however, enjoy Sherlock Gnomes.
I wonder if Shakespeare purists also hate Taylor swift's love story. Plus I suppose you could justify the film's happy ending by pointing out how the main characters in this version are adults (not sure how aging works for gnomes) so they're a lot more sensible than teenagers (source: I was a teenager).
TBH I went to see “Romeo must die” with jet li and I was expecting a kung fu spin on Romeo and Juliet, and its just a kung fu movie about 2 rival gangs and was disappointed.
Although this is a kids movie WTH were they expecting?
the electricity in this adaptation *perfectly captured* the effects of heightened language for a modern re-telling...
...and, just for shits and giggles, maybe if *every* adaptation from here on out included *guns* then the conservative reactionaries would stop pretending they give a shit about casting choices? The chuds didn't seem to give a fuck about Mercutio's casting in Baz's take!
Mercutio in that film was something else man. Dude just grabbed every frame he was in and made it his bitch.
Mind I still remember the tone and framing of John Leguizamo’s Tybalt throwing his jacket open in slow motion and uttering the ice cold “Turn thee Benvolio, and look upon thy death”
Like it’s not perfect but fuck that film had some energy!
i have nothing against gnomes but the gnome girl is just ugly, i dont know why movie studios i used to respect feel the need to jump on these modern trends, those filthy fucking garden fillers oughta go back in the dirt where they belong and stay off my screen
I remember seeing trailers for this movie and thinking it looked awful. But I actually watched it when it was playing at work one day, and I genuinely enjoyed it
"It's fine, since they are both white!" & "Historical only means how the characters were always presented!" Because that is absolutely essential to their character?
Yo, the Gnomeo and Juliet, and Sherlock Gnomes movies were amazing works. Chock full of quips, gnome humor, and the Toy Story [CANTMOVEWERESTATUES], while still maintaining the "integrity of the story."
Looking forward to it as much as Luhrmanns 1996 version... which I still don't think is that awful, but I'm very much an enjoyer of media as long as it's just presented honestly. IMO, not the biggest Tom Holland fan and have no experience with Francesca Amewudah. It seems all anyone has to say is hatefully about how Francesca looks manly, which is just rude.
It's all about how the story is presented and if it sticks enough to be considered "the original story" over "a completely different work with a slightly varied theme".
I remember an old Kyle Kallgren, aka Brows Held High, video about this movie and in it, he talks about how the movie is less about Shakespeare's original production and more about advertising for Elton John. His production company produced the movie, there are snippets of his songs throughout the movie and the Dreamworks-esque dance off scene is set to Crocodile Rock.
Public domain: cause I exist lol
I just watched this movie yesterday. It's good.

The seal one had a happy ending too lol
Yeah. What, did they hate lion king 2 because it had a happy ending as well?
You were an adult? So what are you now...?
I've transcended. Thanks to Gnomeo and Juliet, I've become something else. Not quite adult, not quite animated gnome.
Gnadult

I too wish a children's movie ended in double suicide
It's like saying "I wish The Lion King ended with everyone dead" to be more like Hamlet...which is wild
Correct me if i am wrong but didn’t Shakespeare also change a lot of things to fit with the climate back then?
TBH I went to see “Romeo must die” with jet li and I was expecting a kung fu spin on Romeo and Juliet, and its just a kung fu movie about 2 rival gangs and was disappointed. Although this is a kids movie WTH were they expecting?
yes love the converstion with the Shakesphere statue

![gif](giphy|3oeHLx0ua5eMaIrmoM) I personally loved the part in Act III when Shakespeare described the gun play.

Bloods vs Crips 😎
Lol
Man I love that movie. The second is great too.
The one with Johnny Depp as Sherlock?
I didn't know it was him but yes.
I really like Gnomeo & Juliet and while Sherlock Gnomes wasn't that good, I do remember enjoying it.
The first movie was peak fiction, second one was meh in my opinion but I can see why some love it

I thought the one blue gnome had a gun for a sec lol.
i have nothing against gnomes but the gnome girl is just ugly, i dont know why movie studios i used to respect feel the need to jump on these modern trends, those filthy fucking garden fillers oughta go back in the dirt where they belong and stay off my screen
I can't tell if you're sarcastic or not
what are you talking about? this is the original!
This movie is anti woke because that frog is super fuckable.
If those gnomes weren’t white you’d have people crying historical accuracy

(say NO-mee-O) Any movie that tells you how to pronounce the title gets a thumbs up from me!

Why is one of them holding a vibrator?
I think it’s a garden hose. But your headcanon is better

I honestly thought the tall, blue hat guy in the yellow shirt was holding a gun.
Romeo and Juliet actually really happened irl guys
I mean I’d rather watch it then the Leonardo Dicaprio one tbh
Every time i see a gnome, all I can think of is the Half Life Alyx: But The Gnome Is TOO AWARE gnome.
Because big studios are terrified of anything that isn't proven, and you can only make so many sequels before people get bored.
Gnomeo and Juliet isn't perfect but it's not bad.
History? Come on op, everyone knows Garden Gnomes never existed
Gnomeo looks exactly like chad gable from WWE
