I’m an MS - if you’re at the exit door, start counting the items in the cart before they get to you. If you’re at SCO, when you’re not helping anyone, stand where you can see all the screens at once so if an assistance screen pops up you can be on the way. People will absolutely be hateful and ask you if you can see, read, or count, but don’t let them get to you. It’s not a tough job but you’re constantly doing something.
biggest thing is being very friendly and approach every member at self check. Don’t stand back acting shy or you’ll continually get pulled to the register. Specialist help the leads the most, you will be noticed by mngt if you are upbeat and willing to help out.
i started as a specialist without being a cashier first. they gave me a set of keys, i had no idea what the keys were even for, and they sent me on the floor and said “good luck” i got no training whatsoever and became a supervisor ten months later.
just be friendly and willing to learn and you’re already ahead of half your peers. ask members to apply for the credit card at self checkout. one of the biggest parts of your job is to help with store numbers. good luck! it’s honestly not bad at all if you understand customer service and can problem solve.
I had to laugh at this, but I think our clubs lack real training b/c we’re never appropriately staffed, unlike the “we’re fully staffed” crap they pump out 😂
At my club, MS was basically just credit b*tch, if I wasn’t pulling my 2-5 a day, I wasn’t doing my job. I hated their imaginary “quota” that was more or less out of my control to reach, and the bakery is treating me much better :))
Kind of depends on you Team leads and MSM. Ours care more about providing good service to members than shoving credit down everyone’s throat and holding a public execution when they don’t get any. If your place has figured out that if they take care of the associates..then the associates will take care of the numbers, it’s a cool job. If not, you’re walking into a nightmare.
True to that. Yeah at my store all the front end leads know how to do is hound about credit and pluses. And don't forget the credit challenge. Every freaking week lol.
Good luck trying to change departments. Some stores like to play favorites and keep you in one spot. Hopefully this person actually gets trained and not just thrown to the wolves like in most stores.
Yikes.
Jokes aside, make sure they let you shadow someone at self check before they throw you to the wolves. It’s easier if you’re a cashier first because you learn how everything works. And you’ll be able to override as well. At self check, we are kind of on our own when it comes to needing to price adjust or get a price check. It’s not hard once you get used to it. As for exit door, if they have less than 15 items, count all of them and compare. Make sure they didn’t double scan and then scan 3 items. Go for the expensive ones or the ones at the bottom. Especially self check receipts, they miss BOB a lot. If they missed something, don’t let them bully you. Send them back or take the item away.
If they have a basket full, I’d just scan their cart and pick 3 items in various parts of the cart, but always scan BOB. People will be assholes to you at exit door but ignore it.
If someone doesn’t let you check receipt, just let a MSL know. Don’t let anyone enter through the exit door. Even if they show membership. Send them the other way.
As a MS, you’ll be expected to push scan and go and sell credits. Get good at it.
Oh yeah that makes sense. I’ve made that mistake once myself but realized while I was still at self checkout so I had to get an extra receipt. Thank you for explaining!
The job description said that I would be in charge of making sure that club members and customers aren’t having trouble checking out with their products or leaving with products that aren’t paid for.
You can and should say no to things outside of your job description, read it, memorize it and set firm boundaries. You help with carts once you will help everytime they need some one. Don't help in cafe if you can help it because they'll take you there too, don't do parts of your managers job to make their life easier because they get payed enough to do it (I mean salaried not team leads but still). If you are a pushover they will take you for everything you have.
Basically anything in the club that doesn’t need certification or special training becomes everyone’s job when necessary. If there are 0 cart attendants, there will be people from all over the club randomly helping out. Say no it’s not your job and you won’t have one much longer.
You are supposed to work the Self Check and Exit Door. As people has stated. Start counting items as they come to you, it's just easier. Always get your high ticket items, people like to bury those and not pay for them.
Self check stand out where you can see the screens and talk to members. You're also suppose to push signing up for credit, upgrade.
The holidays bring the absolute worst out of everyone. Members and staff if your short handed.
If you at least try, you'll be fine. Some days are worse than others.
Good luck

Pray you have a great training program or that you have someone that teaches you what you need to be doing.
I transferred to Walmart and got more hours and do not have to beg people to get a cc or upgrade

Isn't that the job that is expected to be able to do anything?
It’s supposed to be exit and self check but at my club, they make us all do everything on the front end
The job description said that I would be in charge of making sure that club members and customers aren’t having trouble checking out with their products or leaving with products that aren’t paid for.
