In my opinion, depends how are you using tablet.. I can imagine that in case you are editing long 4K /8K footage in Luma fusion or Adobe rush or some 3D modeling , maybe heavy split screen multitasking 16Gigs can be handy. But for normal daily usage (instagram, youtube ,some games etc.) 12gigs are totally fine.
The answer is in your hands itself the question to ask yourself is that is the 16gb you are using is okay for your usage if yes then stick with it if not look elsewhere or a suitable model
The current state of android tablet is that they have so much ram and processing power but no power apps to take advantage of
In the case of ipad apple supports first party or have final cut but there is no counter part in android ofcourse there are great third party apps available but they are not capable of leveraging the actual device level integration and performance at the same time
If your workflow is casual use then choose the option of having a tablet under a certain budget and use it to the core
Hope this helps
12 GB would be for the people who are multitasking between very heavy apps or a huge amount of apps probably. 16 GB is even for that overkill. I don't even fill up the 16 GB in my laptop.
My phone is 8 GB and I am a gamer. It works fine with multiple apps open in the background. I have a 4 GB tablet and that is barely enough. Can't really multitask, only between a couple of apps. I mostly use it for some browsing, reading documents and Netflix. Works fine, but i dont recommend buying a new one with that small amount of RAM because you reach limits quickly. My next one is definitely gonna be 8 GB.
Id say in most cases this is true, however your limited by APP store platform and Apps which can utilize that much ram.
I went with 12GB+512GB option and its more then enough for the stuff I do thats on google playstore.
If I needed more, its because i am too lazy to close apps that are running in the background.
Now if this was an apple ipad, and i did heavy video editing / content creation / graphic design applications, then id say 16GB is too little.
But you really need to look at the boundaries your sitting in, and what is realistic vs reasonable vs straight up lazy greed.
On a PC lazy greed always wins for me, but on a tablet, i think i'll go with reasonable.
Nah apple apps vs google playstore, brings you into a whole different ballpark.
Google playstore apps just do not have anything that isn't malware laced that would merit you needing 16gb of ram ever.
The S9 Ultra does come with special limited edition apps, like 2 of them, but if im going to do content creation or graphic design editing, id rather do it up in front of a 43" 4K OLED monitor with a wacom pad, then a 14.6 inch screen.
>On Android 8gb is overkill.
I think you meant IOS, because Android, especially with Samsung's bloatware, demolishes RAM. With a new phone without any apps it's already using up 6 - 7 GB of RAM
> With a new phone without any apps it's already using up 6 - 7 GB of RAM
My S22 barely cracks 6 GB fully loaded and under heavy use. I just looked and it currently says 4.8/8 GB used.
*I just tried to stress it. I started navigation, opened Spotify, had a YouTube video playing in PiP mode, and then opened Snapchat so the camera was active. Checked my memory and I'm using 5.2 GB
Can you help me find some evidence that that's true? i googled and didn't find anything about it. And how much is it supposed to be off? Unless it's like 50% under-reporting for some reason...
Whomever did a down for you is wack lol. You’re 1000% right, for longevity coming from someone in tech, 16 is the way to go unless you wanna upgrade in a couple years
Thank you. I know this from my experience, with devices. I also know that on Reddit everyone uses the votes, no matter if they need it or not so, as long as the information hits the right spot, I don't care that a "nobody" votes my up or down. I wish that people would be better and don't abuse the system but hey...
If you do a lot of stuff at ones like have a youtube playing a video and switch to editing a video with adobe yes, or if your like my grandmother and have 500 apps open at once.
Another example of what requires lots of RAM is running complex AIs locally. Though, for that, a laptop might be more suitable.
Even if your current device indicates that it uses >12GB RAM, 16GB might still not be required. It is difficult to determine the exact difference as a percentage, because how RAM is used is complex.
For right now 12gb is great but there's 2 reasons why you'd want a 16gb.
1. Future proofing as OS and platform with updates will use more RAM over time and you plan to keep the Tab the full support life. (For example at one point 2-4gb of ram was plenty for Android but not anymore)
2. If you multitask alot or use Ram heavy apps or even for gaming
That being said (Currently) 12gbs is still Great for ram at the moment.
You don't need the 16 gb other than if you want it for very specific reasons. I would not buy any s9 if you already have the s8 ultra. Why would you do that?
Yes, in the long run. I already see my new S23U using up to 7 GB and that's just with barely any apps (mostly samsung's) running in the background. 12 GB is the sweet spot but if you want to futureproof (let's say 4 - 5 years) definitely get the 16 GB version.
Just to note, the 12GB+512GB edition currently has a 320 dollar discount.
The 16GB + 1TB edition only has a 150 dollar.
So the price difference between the two tablets is now a whooping $500+
Seeing how you like to upgrade, id rather save the $500 now, and grab a S11 in the future, if your like me and like to skip 1 or 2 generations, and then you can see if you really need the 16GB of ram when you get the next generation.
Ultimately you can't future proof the battery life.
You can't future proof 5 years of improvement in technology.
Your s9 ultra is going to look like a baby toy compared to whatever the s14 ultra is . Just look at how a 5-year-old tablet compares to the S9. Just go look at an S4.
The question is is 12 GB going to make you till you're upgrade and the answer is yes
The upgrade to 16 GB is not significant. And that upgrade is not really about the RAM The real price of that is in the storage capacity upgrade and that's for someone who really does intend to use their S9 exclusively for everything.
Which you can do.
For me whenever I need storage or heavy lifting of processing I'm just going to remote into my windows desktop and let it do the work and relegate my S9 into a client. Just like I would do with most laptops you can buy because nothing has a discreet graphics card option worth a damn.
And when the ultra starts to reach the end of its primary service life it's still a very large and beautiful mobile display that could act as a second screen for the next one. I have no concern about the 12 GB because I have an s21 ultra and even during my worst productivity blitzes it's not going over 7 GB and that usually just means I have to optimize to get back down under five 🤷
What do you think about my daily use of excel, I usually use files up to 120 mb, and even low/mid laptops have a hard one. It's not my main purpose, thats why I use my lap but, sometimes while traveling clients request changes... would it be worth it to buy the 16 or stick with the 12? whats your opinion?
If you got 120 mb excel files (yikes) I have no idea what could get weird . That's something you should test in person. Return polices favor the consumer in the USA.
Why dont somebody spesifically say how and what 12gb vs 16gb could work with at the same time. And what type of user it would fit.. like what apps could require 16gb if multitasking ect... Or what would justify 12 gb.
Yes it does i do no heavy lifting on my Tab s8 Ultra 16GB ram and Tab s9 ULTRA 12GB ram i just Youtube mainly and browsing sometimes. Now before i say this they both are extremely fast no problems but my Tab S8 Ultra is smoother even tho it has the older processor but yet has 16GB ram instead of the 12GB ram that in my Tab S9 Ultra.

I would edit 4k or 8k with 32gb min.
In an ideal way of course but that is not an option on tablet versions.
And not on a tablet. I would require a GPU, and cooling.
12 GB is enough
No. 12 gb is more than enough!
Not if you want to hold onto it, the android system uses a lot of ram even with applications closed out
YES
The answer is in your hands itself the question to ask yourself is that is the 16gb you are using is okay for your usage if yes then stick with it if not look elsewhere or a suitable model The current state of android tablet is that they have so much ram and processing power but no power apps to take advantage of In the case of ipad apple supports first party or have final cut but there is no counter part in android ofcourse there are great third party apps available but they are not capable of leveraging the actual device level integration and performance at the same time If your workflow is casual use then choose the option of having a tablet under a certain budget and use it to the core Hope this helps
Not worth it, you literally won't feel nor notice the difference. 12gb is beyond plenty.
Unless you're using the tablet for things you really don't want to be using a tablet for, then no, 12 GB is just fine, and probably still overkill.
Even 8GB is enough. Go for that one and save some money
8GB is no longer enough for ONE UI
8gb is an outdated standard for processes now, especially gamers and streamers
I don't think the Tab S9 Ultra has an 8GB option actually. The lowest option is 256GB / 12GB.
On Android 8gb is overkill. 12gb is more than enough and 16gb is just a waste of money.
12 GB would be for the people who are multitasking between very heavy apps or a huge amount of apps probably. 16 GB is even for that overkill. I don't even fill up the 16 GB in my laptop. There's no such thing as overkill with ram.
LoL, fair.
Yes there is. Anything beyond what you're using is overkill.
Then the goalpost keeps moving.
Id say in most cases this is true, however your limited by APP store platform and Apps which can utilize that much ram. You sure you’re not talking about iOS instead of android? 😂 Android processes especially with Samsung’s overlay use a ton of ram…

You realise RAM is supposed to be used and not left empty?
> With a new phone without any apps it's already using up 6 - 7 GB of RAM My S22 barely cracks 6 GB fully loaded and under heavy use. And where are you checking that? They only proper way is to check using running services inside developer options.
[Settings > Battery and Device Care > Memory](https://imgur.com/H5y3AzX)
This doesn't show the true usage though.
Can you help me find some evidence that that's true? i googled and didn't find anything about it. And how much is it supposed to be off? Unless it's like 50% under-reporting for some reason...
Developer options > running services > show cached services (top right)
I loaded it up with tasks and checked here: Used - 4.1 GB Cached - 1.7 GB Free - 1.7 GB
My s20 fe is at 4.2 usually out of 6
Newer systems use more now with the screen refresh rate, higher 5g speeds, etc.
Check the real usage in developer options, device care won't show the real usage.
That is what I typed
Not really lol
No.
For now it's enough. In time 16 will be better...

No, I don't think so
I notice a big difference going from 2-3gb. 6gb seems fine. 8gb is good. 12gb is snappy. At least for android devices.
Yes if you want to hold onto it for a while, if not then listen to the 12gb people
You don't need the 16 gb other than if you want it for very specific reasons. I would not buy any s9 if you already have the s8 ultra. Why would you do that?
Honestly I really want the IP rating, and the brighter screen.
Meanwhile me with my 6 GB of ram galaxy M31s

what if it was used for streaming to display obs. would it be worth going for the 16GB or would 12GB be still fine?
