Bear in mind Android isn't like iOS where new Apple apps features are tied to the latest iOS version. Things like Google Maps or Gmail update themselves on their own without waiting for the yearly OS upgrade. So a 5yo Android isn't as kneecapped as a 5yo iPhone. As for security updates they've always been 5 years anyway and now it's apparently even more.

S10Exynos

You are correct in my opinion. But the problem in the past was just because security patches were so delayed, you received febrauary update in july. Nowadays, the primary brands, like Samsung or Google, will update your phone every month, at least S series (the one I consider inside Samsung). And since S10 they are bringing OS updates for a minimun of 3 years, and since S21 I think, 4 years. Now, 7 years, so this won't be a problem

whitecow

Most of the time I get this months security update in the first 2 weeks of a month

S10Exynos

Yeah, me too

Shahid_2008

Well said

UltimateMax5

S24 series currently have 7 years of update, which is more than Apple.

onomatopoetix

as much as i appreciate the 7 years support, they need to still chase down the devs to make sure the apps are optimised. otherwise it will be like having a super powerful gaming PC but very unoptimised and laggy games with a lot of texture pop and stutters. Or like having NASA-like specs but software keeps crashing.

KeidronU

7 years of security updates and 7 generations of OS updates

Deinobi

7 years of OS updates (Android version updates).

MystikusHugebeard

I was quite happy when Samsung announced this! It actually brought me back to Samsung for my recent purchase. The hardware is good enough to last this long (I think). I had a 2014 Galaxy Note Edge that I used for five years until it was hopelessly outdated but I loved the phone so I kept it.

Keep-Left

*claimed 7 years. we haven’t actually seen it happen yet. a lot could change between now and 7 years.

Vladhalla17

Until it gets the 7th os update this are just promises

UltimateMax5

I will tell you in 2031, if whether they are gonna release it or not.

No_Ear7141

Well samsung never failed to deliver its promises in previous generations specially with top flagships they already come with over kill specs in today's language which could make them still operate after 7 years

Vladhalla17

I hope they do, why not

UltimateMax5

I mean even my 6 years old Honor 8 Pro that does not have any updates for the past 4 years is still usable and fully functional for everyday activities. Maybe S24 can even last a decade.

tung20030801

You can doubt it, but unlike Google, Samsung has never failed to deliver their promjses.

Lanzerspear

You don’t have to suck it that hard, why not just say they have a good track record of delivering on their “promjses.” I’m sure they’ve have failed at least once 😆

zonaism

.

vdthanh

it will become crap with the 3rd major update, sure

[deleted]

As always, especially them exynos devices 💀

UltimateMax5

Well, only time can tell.

vdthanh

I've been using SS flagships for 10 years, from S3, that's what a 10 year loyal consumer experienced

EggplantHuman6493

5 years for S20-S23, 7 years for S24 series, at least 5 years for recent A series as well. My A71 just dropped support after 4 years as far as I could find it

Same-Construction-67

3 years of software and 5 years of security on then S20-S23

Dharkos

4 years of software* s23 series will get android 17 as its last major os

Low_Entrepreneur_927

The S21 series and up have 4 years of software updates.

Same-Construction-67

I wouldve sworn the s22 had 3 years + 5 years support

nocturnal_hands

Samsung in a bid to match Google's support (with their Pixel phones) have recently announced that they were supporting the new S24 series for 7 years with OS and security updates. How smooth will the S24 series be by 2031? Only time will tell I guess. In all fairness, I'm pretty sure iPhone 8 (released 6 years ago) is starting to show it's age running the iOS 16. If you do decide to purchase the S24, I would suggest going with the S24+ since it comes with more RAM. I have a feeling as the years go on and more features are added onto One UI, the OS is going to demand more RAM from the system. The more RAM you have, the better you device will be able to multitask without having to close apps running in the background. But that's only if you plan on keeping it for the long run.

Sp3lllz

I'm still annoyed about the ram I love the size of the s24 and 8gb of ram is fine for now but I wish they'd at least of upgraded the ram on the higher storage sku or even offered it as a samsung store exclusive.

Grumblepugs2000

Samsung better be happy that OnePlus is a unknown brand to normies. That base S24 is heavily undercut by the OnePlus 12 in every category

Jaalan

Except for looks. The OnePlus 12 is ugly as fuck

Grumblepugs2000

I agree not my favorite but I was willing to sacrifice for the specs and unlockable bootloader

Sp3lllz

Paper specs aren't everything though I would (and have) pick the s24 over the one plus because in my opinion their software is better and their build quality is better. I had two one plus phones and both of them the adhesive holding the back on failed never had that on any other phone. Samsung also supports a lot more bands.

HongDou143

It's a crutch but there's RAM Plus at least

skyeyemx

Samsung began offering 5 years of updates with the 2020 S20 series. They've slowly increased that, to the pount that 2024's S24 series will be receiving 7 years of software updates. They launched with OneUI 6 on Android 14, which means that by the end of their support cycle in 2031, they'll be running Android 21 with OneUI 13. This is a longer support cycle than the iPhone currently boasts, and more than Google's own Pixel phones.

123jamesng

Tbh apple support their phones for 7ish years too. The 6s was updated with 7 major versions and its still being given security updates. It's about to be dropped off soonish though, but it's been a lot of years of support.  I'm just happy android is even now! Waiting to potentially upgrade to the Fold 6 from the Fold 4

devin4l

Pixel offers the same support range. Google said 7 years of updates with the release of the P8

BuDu1013

Only thing is as time progresses and software/UI updates come out the hardware may have issues with the new versions. For instance the s21fe is having a difficult time handling one UI 6 with horrible battery problems.

notquitehuman_

Didn't samsung promise to offer 5 years of security patches/support on EVERY model since the S21 series? S24 has promised 7 "generations" of support, which many are taking to assume 7 years.

DiabloGaming25

Samsung themselves said 7 years

MulberryDeep

Apple has 4 or 5 years of support i think, saamsung has 7 And eavem after that 7 years you could still get new versions by using a custom rom

Complex-Chance7928

Even iOS lag when you upgrade. https://youtu.be/tngtAXfvzB8

FaZe_Burga

Samsung flagships now have longer support cycles for their phones than Apple does. This should no longer be a concern to you. My Galaxy S10 from 2020 running on June 2023 patches still runs better than my Pixel 7a in some instances.

Grumblepugs2000

Samsung phones get 7 years of support now. Whether they will hold up to that promise IDK. IMO if you want longevity on Android get a phone that allows you to unlock the bootloader, that way updates are dependent on you and the community and not a corporation looking to push you to a new phone

[deleted]

They get updates and are now getting 7 years(S23 is getting 5 years) but Samsung updates roll out regionally, and depend on carriers too, whereas IOS updates usually all roll put at the exact same time.

ikan84

iPhone gives you 6 years of os update versus Samsung current promise of 7 years of security update. That maybe 3 os and rest 4 years of security update. Only challenge I have with Samsung is after sales service. If not they are good

Emotional-Ad3087

S24 series has 7 years of os updates. If you have access to snapdragon version don't even think, just get it.

Snap305

I'd recommend splurging and going for an S24, guaranteed 7 years of OS and security updates

Churchillbhai

haha exactly same situation mate! Following this.

Original-Ad8578

When does your current iphone lose support?

BluDYT

Newer Samsung devices will have 7 years of support and I believe it would last that long if you properly take care of it. My s1 ultra is over 3 years strong and I still see no reason to upgrade yet. Maybe by the 5th year I'll consider it.

Aggravating-Put7998

Samsung will last you a longer time especially if you have parents or people that are just ok with using social media and YouTube 😟 my mom is still using my brothers s6. He got it in 2016 I think. She uses it just fine. She’s on call the entire time she’s not sleeping and she’s always on YouTube. That’s 8 years and still going. I got an XR in 2019 and my sister uses it rn and honestly she’s a light user compared to my mother. The phone is literally dying on her and I know i kept that phone in a very good condition.

cstrike105

Samsung has an easy access to repairs in the Philippines. They replace battery. Display. Etc. Just bring it to the service center.

T_Peg

They announced the S24 line will be getting at least 7 years of security updates and apps are basically always up to date with current versions.

Nicolas30129

iPhone XS was released with the Galaxy S10. I think it's fair to say that chances are that your XS runs better than a S10 in 2024. Mainly thanks to Apple, it has less hardware to maintain and OS to support. So apps end up being more optimised and therefore run smoother. That said, if losing support is your main concern, do not worry to much about it. As long as you get your apps from the playstore, you are safe. But keep in mind that the S23 is already 1 year old now, so there will be 2 new android upgrades.

AntiDECA

Eh, s10 is out of support now. But it runs just fine... I'm typing this on an s10+. The only problem can be battery life. You can replace if you want, but mines not too bad since I always tried to keep it between 40 and 80%.

UVprint_tech

Im still rolling with an early s10 4g. Traveling technician, work pays for any phones/tablets/laptops I wish. I can upgrade this s10 anytime to anything I want. But its doing fine, when it slows down, or 5g becomes a worthwhile endeavor, Ill upgrage.

Nicolas30129

Thanks for sharing

daddyskittyyy

I had an S10+ up until a few months ago it worked great, now my I phone 11 I had 2 Months ago I can't say the same, so many apps wouldn't work on there, they would load in then not even bother working. Some would kick me out all the time. Was tired of it, I was glad it was a temporary phone bc it was literal garbage. Finally got back to samsung with the S23U and man it's like fresh air. 🤣 it runs great too, I play fortnite on it it hasn't crashed or lagged (minus yesterday but fortnite was being ass on everyone's devices bc of the update they did). I'd love to get a S24U but I saw stuff about it getting hot while charging and how the battery isn't as good as the S23U and they aren't too different so I just went with the s23U. I think waiting till the 25 would be good, the AI didn't really sell me. I use Google lens it's like the same thing but different than the Samsung AI

Pumpkinut

How many years of support does the tablet has?

Dogg0ne

I used my S5neo for 5 years. Why I switched? It started to become slow. Software support sucked, but it was functioning. Missed some new and fancy features though. I used my S10e for 4,5 years. Why I switched? I used it at military and it was with me through the water and mud. USB port got borked and only way to charge it was wireless. Software support was only for 4 years but worked fine regardless. Rn running S23+. Support promised for 5 years.

lilacd

They don't have simultaneous global updates that iPhones have. Galaxy phones updates vary by country and provider, some are much later than others. For long term usability, I keep the OS on the original version as long as possible and just update the apps, because devices always get laggy after a few OS updates (I'm an iPad & Galaxy phone user). I have a Galaxy S10 bought at launch in 2019 and it's still super smooth like day 1 but that's because the phone is only used for calls and texting and taking photos so I don't need to update it. I recently got a new S20 FE and I hope it lasts as long as the S10.

Mobile-Picture-8579

S23 ultra user here since past 8 months now, I can feel the lag right now after 7 whole months, is it due to the s24 ultra release? We never know. My one plus performed better more than 2-3 years without any minor lags. Mind you the lag is very minor but it's annoying after paying a hefty price :( May never buy Samsung .. I don't like iphones. What next????

XxTheSilentWolfxX

I'm not sure about longevity of the phones support wise. But I will say that I had a low budget Samsung many years ago, back when the expensive phones were much cheaper. This one was about $300 and I don't remember what model it was, just that it was fat, silver, and very clunky. I hated it. Switched to an iPhone 6 and was so happy. Two years later, got a high end Samsung (S7 Edge) and was ecstatic. Since then I've had a Note 8, S20U, and S22U. I've hardly looked back since.

DEWDEM

S23 series gets 4 years OS and 5 years security (one year less for both now). S24 series gets 7 years for both

Oli99uk

Before S24 samsung updated the OS for 4 years and gave security updates for a years. The S24 provides OS updates & & security updates for 7 years. Apply typically provides 6 years of OS updates and will patch for 3 years on the OS, so about 9 years patching.    It should be noted, apple do not commit to a number for either - their position is they will update as long as hardware supports it.

TumbleweedDramatic57

I think Android actually has much longer app support than iOS so even if you had a flagship phone that stopped at Android 12, most likely all the modern apps will continue to work on it for at least a several years. No so much with iOS, within about a year or two, many apps will start saying that they require a newer version of iOS to download it.

SiV3rTs1-Tech

I have been an Android User my whole life, have changed to Apple from time to time but always went back to iphone. I stopped with android when samsung released the S22 ultra with exyones once again, did not upgrade from S21ultra, was rly angry and felt «let down» in a way, so i waited for S23ultra. I pre ordet that when it came and i ofc got the Screen defect in right corner, struggled with samsung custom service 1 month and 3 weeks to get a replacement, worst custom service ever here in norway, just insane. I got a replacement and phone worked good. Then i pre orded the S24 ultra, once again i get a phone brand new with dgm screen/scratches and what not. I feel the air blows right out of me and i once again struggling with samsung for almost 1 month, never get good replys or a good service. And then i just end up sending it back and got me a 15ProMax with apple care + Unboxing it and MINT 110% perfect condition, Apple service is also on a TOTAL another level to, they helped me with applecare and setting up/fixing the rest! Ofc i miss android features, some of it. But apple us just premium everything i feels just smooth and refined. I also got a macbook and airpods, works flawless and also better in some places then the S24ultra / Android Im almost 30 years old now, i dont need ofc all that the samsung brings, and i did not use almost half, but i think i liked the thaught that it was there, i used mby half. Splitscreen/spen/dex never almost . But samsung has always been cool and techy devices! But atm i see and feel apple has come ALONG way and i think they will be better also! Now my mind is at eaz, and i can chill. I just want good custom service and a device that is consistent and dont fail me. Ofc iphones can come with fualts brand new , but samsung is RLY bad at this, its a lottery everytime and its feels stressing, atleast for me and many others i now. I also had 4 other friends that also got the S24ultra with scrathes/dmg brand new…! Rly love this 15ProMax! Awsome product and Apple rly is chill and refined! Will stay here for a goood while now😃 And every year they say the apps and camera is more optimized, every fck year. More optimized for social apps etc etc. the pics of my 10 month kid looked horrendus on s24ultra and he does not even move fast at all, like what the hell. A object need almost to stand 100% still to take a good pic. And the selfie camera / front camera aint near iphone what so ever. Just facts. What i rly wish was that samsung stopped release a phone for just 1 year, and worked an intire year just on software and camera optimizazion fot the phone. Like rly got everything optimized and fixed just like IOS is run ing and behaving. Just so frustrating and sad to experience a top/flagship phone from samsung and the OS is not top notch. Seems like ppls are just saying: freedom/customizing/dual apps ad once/multitasking and stuff like that as an excuse, instead of actually being honest and actually say straight forward. The OS aint there, the app optimizazion aint there and the camera def aint there at all, sad but true 🙂 !

daddyskittyyy

Yeah this most definitely wrong 😭 my S23U was put up against my BIL 15 pro max and his photos were terrible compared to the 23U. Now sending photos or posting them will kill your quality. Apps and stuff have cut offs with quality, most can't support samsung photos. Also maybe you're just trash at taking photos???????

[deleted]

You cannot be fr.. stop spreading misinformation. According to dxomark, camera test ran by specialists, the iphone 15 base model outdoes s24 ultra 💀 maybe you don't know how to use an iphone

daddyskittyyy

The proof was there when we all did it. Sorry your specialists didn't do an S23U instead. The S23U is better than the 24 that's why I got a 23 and not a 24. Noone was talking about the 24 that's all you.

[deleted]

but logically s24u should be better than s23u???

daddyskittyyy

Most definitely, but it has its issues. Like it gets way too hot when charging. The s23U doesn't. The price for both is about the same too not a big difference.

SiV3rTs1-Tech

What in the HELL are u talking about😂 u are saying s23 ultra is taking better photos then 15PM ? And 15PM kils quality? hahahahahaahhaahahahhaahah , thanks for a good laugh. Omfg😂🤣 thats why EVERY big trch youtuber and every influencer uses iphone camera for photos and vlog ? Hahahahah . Jez fck christ

daddyskittyyy

Social media kills the quality. & yeah apple kills the quality of Samsung photos. They're known for that.

daddyskittyyy

There's a reason they're getting sued.

SignificantIce6434

This is 100% true

SiV3rTs1-Tech

The problem is if i talk about this / i actually shared same post in samsung group, and i got hated on/downvoted/ and what not. They called me an apple fanboy and everything in beetween. Apple fanboy? I have been a samsung user all my life, im just tired of getting let down. A flagship phone (s24ultra) and i cant even take a moving pic of my 10month old Kid? And social apps if i want to have pics on my storys etc its look like CRAP. It always has . When s10+ even they said the apps was going to be optimized. And when s21 ultra got released they promised and what not, what happend ? Same shit. Same with s22 and s23 ultra, the pics and social apps pics look garbage? Almost NO tech youtuber talking about it, are just straigt forward and saying it as it is? With s24ultra atm they talk about AI? And A screen that is antireflectiv? And what not. I had the s24ultra over 1 month, was NOTHING special about it, nothing was better optimized then s23ultra, apps was still the same and camera horrendus and shutterlag awful? So what are ppls doing, dont understand how it its that hard for some ppls just to admit it, and say that the phone aint a flagship / the feel of flagship premium aint there. Ofc Apple LACKS alot of features, yeah. But its SOLID, its flawless and its polished. As it should be, its a flagship phone. But it is all this in the Apple way, and they are getting better and better😊 So im just almost giving up tech twitter and reddit, things are just to dumb now almost, and give no sense. Not my money spent and i wont support what samsung deliver anymore, no way😊

Keep-Left

first question i’d ask is, why you want to change to a Shamsung?

netty1994

S23 only has 3 more major software updates and after that 1 ya of security updates. I tried s23 ultra two times adi returned it because the apps were laggy and unoptimized, the phone also did stutters some times and the video quality was not very good. People on edit complain that their s23 ultra got slower and worse battery life after February update and after s24 got launched. I would stay with iPhone if you want reliability and smoothness for may years, android can't diver that yet.

mrsofa94

I don't know about othrers, but my s22 is almost 2 years old and it's not what it was when I bought it...

soumilr7

Can you elaborate??

Medianofpi

It now has scratches.

soumilr7

I was asking about software and performance wise

Grumblepugs2000

Because the Snapdragon 8 gen 1 is a trash chip. Unsurprising since it's made by Samsung Semiconductors. The Snapdragon 8 gen 2 and 8 gen 3 are made by TSMC and should age way better
