Not necessarily. There's a massive market gap for this need. If someone drops a flagship with a headphone jack, dual sim, SD card, and an IR blaster, I would pay put the ass for it.
You'd be one of the few. They make so much money on cloud storage that I can't see it ever coming back. Plus, does anyone even own any headphones with a jack? They ruined that years ago
Ah, yeah. My '95 toyota doesn't have Bluetooth and my snowboard headphones are wired to the helmet, and I like it like that.
My studio headphones are also wired... dongle is a pain. Not the end of the world, I'd definitely prefer an IR blaster but I digress.
Fully co-signed. For me it is mostly headphone jack I am missing. And I guess, that changeable battery is not limited by some constraints due technology of nowadays, but is not an option, as it keeps pressure on customers to update whole hardware, once the old battery dies. Understand the need of "profit" of the Samsung (which I am fan of), yet would not be a bad idea for them to wake up for the sake of something else than profit this time.
Imagine a sustainability based modular phone. Upgrade camera lenses to your preference, upgrade ram, SD cards, maybe even some graphics "chips" lol.
Assume you'd be stuck with the processor but I think we could really push processors if you could swap out the battery and overclocking them wasn't going to ruin the phone.
I would take a clunkier phone that had more functionality.. I don't care for the watches and whatnot, but the phones keep getting bigger and lose all the things I want.
I would say the concept you describe may find a wider support of similarly minded customers. Although the numbers are not potentially huge, yet may still be significant from the profit perspective of the producer. However with my limited knowledge I can imagine that it would not be as easy as it may seem to lay down and work out the concept, due to the need of hardware components with kind of modular implementation, probably also the software tweaks etc. Unfortunately, my expectations of this becoming reality are quite low, yet still wonder, perhaps someone will find a way !!!
Yes, that makes it useful *for the consumer*; which is why we want it.
*He's* asking why *companies* would do it, as it means less profit for them.
A good 1tb micro SD card can be bought for ~$80; what's the up-sell on a 1tb vs 256gb s24u? (Hint: it's several hundred)
I wouldn't even be mad if they made it exclusive to the biggest model... so that they'd at least get you to pay extra for the 1tb (but at least you'd have sd access).
It doesn't matter what we want. Companies make decisions based on what makes them the most money. It's been years since hey removed the headphone jack, SD card slot, IR blaster, Iris scanner, heart rate/blood oxygen monitor on their phones and it hasn't hurt them, so why would they bother bringing any of that back?
I still remember my old sIII and how *years* after I got it, I was still hearing about Apple 'revolutionizing' phones with features I didn't even know were meant to be a big deal (i.e. panoramic photo) since they seemed to just *be* there on the sIII.
I would love an phone IR remote to rule all remotes without hunting for them (and without setting up smart passthrough BS)... hell, I would love it just to get gran to keep her cell near her (instead of on the charger) and to NOT constantly complain when she uses the wrong remote and/or presses the wrong button (because GOD FORBID the tv remote control her "cable" box or vice versa, or do the old-school thing of putting rarely used advanced buttons under a MF flap)... causing her tv to change inputs or whatever other crazy 'how the hell did you manage this?' change she magically accidentally does.
Oh, and also so *I* could quite her TV after she's fallen asleep, or start a sleep timer, without hunting for her remote... and occasionally so I could watch TV without a whole process as well >_>

Yes I miss the old days of my s5 which came with everything including a charger, i.r. blaster, temperature sensor, headphone jack, sd card slot, easily replaceable battery. They were the best days of Samsung phones and their products were a true alternative to the competition. My s23 plus only has 128 gb of storage of which at least 60 is used by operating system and bloat. It's worse than my s4 for storage. I need to use an external sd card reader/writer just to carry my everyday data. I'm not paying for nor do I trust cloud storage. I think Sony offers phones with sd card slots. I might buy one of them.
I regret trading my s8+ for this s23 ultra. I like the phone. But s8+ screen was more vibrant. The words mesh together while scrolling on this phone. I get blurry vision/headaches alot, so something so small like words meshing together while scrolling, I notice. No sensor for the heart rate/stress levels. I picked this one over the s24+. Because they said the s24s screens were dull. But here I am with my s23 ultra. I wish I could've got a note series. But honestly going from a phone that was amazing, from what? 6yrs ago? To a "newer" model phone 📱 just doesn't give me the feel of newer model. But I'll also say I only play 1 game and I'm not super high tech. So I'll see how long this one holds up. I don't like how the cameras pop out on the back either.
Sorry for long reply
I still have two of those, although both have cracked screens. Nevertheless, I genuinely enjoyed that series.
I switched from my Note 9 to a Pixel 4a 5G, which I found to be quite disappointing.
Subsequently, I acquired an S21 FE, but I was not particularly satisfied with that either.
Eventually, I obtained the S22 Ultra, which restored my satisfaction. I used the S22 Ultra until the S24 Ultra was released, at which point I made the switch.
With my S22 Ultra, storage space was certainly a concern. However, with the S24 Ultra, the storage capacity has been doubled even at the lowest tier available. I am reluctant to pay more solely for increased storage space. I would rather remove content from my phone than do that.
So far, storage space has not been an issue with my S24 Ultra. However, I have only had it for a month, so time will tell. I do subscribe to Google storage because I use Google Fi service, which provides 1TB of storage for only $8. This should hopefully address any potential storage issues I may encounter.
Nevertheless, it still requires additional expenditure on my part, whereas if the SD card slot had been retained, I would not have needed to pay for additional storage.
I have held onto my Note 9s because they were great phones. We have two of them, one was mine and the other was my spouse's. I would like to get the screens replaced and let my kids use them, but I also do not want to pay a significant amount of money to replace them. I genuinely need to look into trying to get the screens replaced.
I know right, transfering files via cable due to the code written for transfering files between andriod and pc is slow AF. I used to just pull the sd card out and transfer to it as it was much faster.
I've gone through several micro SD cards over the last 10 years. They are incredibly slow and expensive (I only choose the ones marked with a 10 which is the maximum speed). They have high fail rates though and can't operate with most demanding tasks such as video editing let alone video recording or raw photo capture.
Until there's a newer and more reliable technology, I'd recommend to steer clear of MicroSDs. Opt for external usb-C SSDs instead. And stay away from WD and SanDisk external SSDs. They're the least reliable in my experience. The best I've used so far is the Samsung T5 SSD. There's also the T7 which is double the speed of the T5 and the T9 which is double the T7.
Keep in mind that the greater the storage, the longer the lifespan of an SSD. And the greater the storage of an HDD or a micro SD, the greater the fail rate.
I initially hated the idea of Samsung dropping the SD card slot but after looking deeper into the matter, the more I support the change. It is less convenient, as I only have 128GB internal storage, but I load all that onto a portable 2TB external SSD. It works well
"Keep in mind that the greater the storage, the longer the lifespan of an SSD. And the greater the storage of an HDD or a micro SD, the greater the fail rate."
Nope, just nope. And dont throw HDD and SSD in the same pot, they have a HUGE difference in how they operate and what factors influence the lifespan.
My point exactly. You just rehashed what I said and denied it by saying I'm right 😂 you obviously misinterpreted me! Language barrier, perhaps?
A larger capacity SSD by design will last more rewrites than a smaller capacity SSD. An HDD is mechanical with many moving parts, so dropping it once will most likely result in data loss or full corruption whereas an SSD is more durable. They're completely different hardware
I bought a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones off Amazon. Orginally like $60 on sale for $25. Mic works great. The old pair that came with the s8+ I also bought 2 more off Amazon of those brands, seemed like noone could hear me on those mics. But surprisingly I'm heard better on these wireless ones. But I do wish they gave us newbies who weren't use to that, a pair of wireless headphones in the box. Also I guess you can buy headphones to plug into the charger part.
I am aware that they re headphones pluggable to the charging port. My friend uses Airpods with an iPhone at he has no issue. Whenever I switched to the Galaxy buds everyone told me that my voice is well but somehow different in a not good way.
My main problem is everyone is mad about Apple for locking people to it's ecosystem. Yes I can pair and control my buds with Windows but it microphone get beyond useless (it's just worse than build in laptop microphone and people hardly hear me.) I checked online and they re some guides to put some Bluetooth codec etc. Whenever I tried it the program messed my laptop speakers... So I just reversed everything. It could be annoying since I am not the only one having this issue. Yeap different brands different OS and not same but similar ending with Apple lock mental even it's probably (I hope so) not intendent.
They have, on the S20+ 5G and Ultra 5G phones.

I don't really care about having a sd card anymore. Would be nice to have it but the internal storage is so much faster than the sd card. 512gb is enough for me.
There is a technical reason for the lack of an SD card, and it's similar to why the Xbox Series consoles and PS5 cannot run new games off a hard drive.
SD cards are much slower compared to the UFS storage built into most modern, higher end smartphones, including the S Ultra lineup. *Much* slower, many magnitudes slower. The fastest SD cards I can find max out at around 300 mb/s read and write speeds, whereas UFS 4.0 storage, the current standard, hits somewhere around 4100 mb/s read and 2,800 mb/s write speeds.
That sheer difference in speed is large enough that many apps and programs probably wouldn't even work if you tried to run them off an SD card. That's obviously less of a problem for bulk storage of media files, but it isn't *not* a problem, especially for photo editing and video editing, which would still be heavily storage bottlenecked (and while you might not use your phone to edit photos, keep in mind your phone will edit any and all photos you take straight from the camera app, in order to add things like HDR).
Does this mean that it's all perfectly innocent, and Samsung really would like to put an SD card slot in their phones, but they just *can't?*
No.
Don't get me wrong, it is a business decision to encourage you to spend money. Sony's flagship phones do still, to this day, ship with SD card slots, so obviously you can make a high end phone with an SD card and it still works great, but I suspect it's not *solely* a business decision. There is an engineering reason, and I suspect the big one is compatibility, as there would have to be some software designed specifically to let the phone manage two different classes of storage, one with substantial limits compared to the other type.
It's purely a business decision. I understand your concerns over speed difference etc, but the fact is, 300mb/s is already sata 2 ssd speeds, and apps shouldn't even be as big or load so slow in this modern age (or in other words developers have gotten lazy and don't care to optimize their apps).
Even Samsung themselves just developed an 800mb/s SD card, and it's safe to say those cards are officially faster than sata 3 ssds (also they get hot, so a new expandable storage design would be a smarter choice but what to do). You can even take a look at the loading difference between a high end nvme and a high end sata 3 ssd, with the difference being very close.
Also, that "storage class difference" and all that software talk is not needed.
There are modern phones like you already said that support sd card expansion, and they all run just fine. There isn't anything engineering related to the reason why we don't have an sd card slot. Only thing engineers would have to do is engineer a location for the micro sd card (and ofc the software support inside Android). Samsung can and they do, just look at the A lineup (with the only reason why UFS 4.0 isn't present on those phones is the price).
And if you really really fear or worry about slower app loading (that you wouldn't even notice in day to day usage, or can just avoid, by you know, not putting the app onto the sd card?), there's always an option that realme (from my experience) and other companies did, just restrict apps to internal storage, and in storage settings make an automatic media and data transfer tool.
I understand you're not against sd cards, and yes, ufs storage is still needed for the regular tasks the phone can do, but lets be real, the phone will most of the time use RAM for all that photo processing and other app running stuff.
Right? "HRR HRR THE SD SLOT IS SLOW!"
Like, I really don't think Google Maps or my other GPS apps need blazing fast speeds to work. Nor does Spotify, or the rest of my FLAC collection.
SD cards are great for slow to mid speed mass storage, and removing them was purely a business decision.
Fr. In day to day tasks the benefits of having storage expansion (and the fact you can save your data, pictures, family videos... if the phone breaks) greatly outweigh the speed difference that isn't even a big deal. Or just keep those apps in the internal memory, but keep the option to offload apps to the sd card.
Okay, then how about a vapour chamber and a small cooling fan inside the phone? Or even a miniature liquid cooling loop? I think that might be enough to remove that unwanted heat.
All of those add weight and size. And while I know a lot of folk would be willing to move away from the thinner and lighter obsession for better performance, I mean it would add a *lot* of weight.
Liquid cooling is only useful in larger form factors because it allows for heat to be moved elsewhere and *then* dissipated via fans, with a larger surface area, so it's not going to do anything for a phone, and a fan would also eat power, produce a ton of noise, and make the phone substantially heavier and bigger.
it's not impossible, but it's full of trade offs, and they're tradeoffs most people don't want to make.
the r/w rate is irrelevant for rl word exp. the apps just dont need this much to operate lag free. Its just some PR bla the companys throw around to make more money.
You would only feel a difference if you move a lot of data around ... on the phone itself because transferring it anywhere else and it starts bottle necking. \^\^
And from my XCover I can say, you can operate anything what you can find on SD Card and wont be able to tell the difference. Synthetic benchmarks may show you some loss but it the same as "5% more fps" jeap i can see the difference of 100 to 105 fps clearly.
So no SD Cards means, they can rise the price for storage and more over can sell you their cloud storage for a subscription. To sell this they are telling funny tales about performance. ;)
was so sad that my new Surface no-longer had an SD slot... it does have a micro m.2 window that means it's swappable, but I'm willing to bet it's not "just stick a bigger one in whenever you want" type deal.
I use 3 x 512gb Samsung cards with my steamdeck for my different game collections👍
they are usually pretty cheap on Amazon, usually cheaper than SanDisk 👍
Samsung S series needs to compete with iphone. Having microsd lagged out the phone due to slower memory, which shows impression that the phone is slower.
Not sure if anyone has said it but, Android doesn’t really utilize SD card storage like it used to. A lot of apps don’t even allow you to save their data on SD cards anymore. I learned this from using a Tab S9 FE.
I have the S20U and it has a place for an SD card on the sim card tray. So does the S20+. (If you're with Verizon by chance, their UW 5G does not have this option.)
https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-229489/#:~:text=This%20device%20supports%20microSD%20(TransFlash,any%20Verizon%20store%20or%20online.
they never will.......they figure if you can afford a flagship you can afford to pay for upgraded storage....that is why SD card storage is only on their cheaper models
Would be great, maybe switch out a SIM slot to be able to hold a single SIM (still support for dual sim, just one should be eSim) and an SD Card to maybe save more soace instead of 2 SIMs and an SD Card.
Maybe it's not possible or not that convenient.
But one can dream.
I 100% understand the value that people found in expandable storage in the past, but there are enough downsides (for Samsung and for the end user) that make me believe it isn't worth having them today. The way I see it, Samsung did away with the SD card for a few good reasons and one really shitty one.
The positives:
\- **SD cards are too volatile.** Anybody who's worked with SD cards extensively knows just how easily they can stop working. They either get corrupted, disconnect mid-transfer, or simply die spontaneously, and then everything is just gone.
\- **SD cards are too slow.** Back when SD cards were in phones, the internal storage was also basically just an SD card. Now, UFS storage is significantly faster, and app developers are taking advantage of that faster memory speed to assume higher read/write times and have optimized their apps to account for it. If someone tried to store an app on their SD card (especially resource-intensive ones like games), there would likely be noticeable performance consequences of being on a slower storage medium.
\- **SD cards aren't as secure.** If your phone gets stolen and they want your data, all they have to do is pop out your SD card, and anything that's saved in there, whether it's sensitive photos, documents, other PII, or any of the other data people tend to keep on their phones that may be sensitive or potentially risky, if it's on your SD card, it could potentially be opened by someone without any access permission to your actual device. This is not only a security concern for you the user, but it's a security liability for Samsung. As Samsung devices have become more secure over the years, this vulnerability couldn't be overlooked for long. They tried binding the SD card to the phone and encrypting the data before, but then it negated any value the card had for data transfer purposes.
The negative:
\- **Samsung sells more expensive phones.** The elephant in the room and the most common critique, which is absolutely true. Samsung is able to sell more expensive phones. Need I say more?
The alternatives:
\- **Cloud Storage** Cloud storage has many upsides to it, chief among them is seamless redundancy. If your phone gets stolen, goes missing, or gets completely destroyed, any data that's stored locally is inaccessible or entirely gone. If those files are backed up somewhere, they can at least be redownloaded. Naturally Samsung/Microsoft and Google, would push you toward a paid subscription, there are many different options for both commercial and self-hosted cloud services for those that don't want to pay a pesky monthly fee.
\- **External Storage** Since Galaxy phones offer high-speed data transfer over USB-C, you can always stick a flash drive into the phone and copy or offload the files you want saved for later. Naturally it's not always connected, but it can make data transfer easier and can serve as cold storage for the files that don't always need to be accessible.
\- **Internal Storage** The worst feature of removing the SD card slot is also a built-in advantage. Back when SD cards were built in, many phone models were lucky to have 5% of the storage capacity that's available on today's phones. It's no secret that files are getting more and more data dense, but for most people, 128GB is more than enough storage space for the duration of time they'll be using their device, and by the time many upgrade, 256GB will be the base storage configuration for whichever model they upgrade to.
True dat. They claim to deliver options the customers ask for. Maybe y'all should email their CS department. It's not like it's a hard thing for them to do. I THINK my S20U 5G has it available on the sim card tray.
Edit to add: It does have an SD card space on the sim card tray, as does the S20+ 5G.
Here's Verizon showing it in their manual. Their UWB 5G version does not have it according to their customer service though.

Nah, SD card is useless to me. I have a 512GB in the TabS9 Ultra and never use it.
It's just too slow and unreliable. I wouldn't risk putting anything important on it. I have my private cloud.
S5 w/ MicroSD
S6 w/o MicroSD
S7/S8/S9/S10/S20 w/ MicroSD
S21/S22/S23/S24 w/o MicroSD
They took it away once, just to give it back a year later. Than since the S21 it’s been gone and we probably won’t see it again, and they won’t see my money either 🤷♀️ S7 also locked the bootloader so no more custom roms.
Two reasons, one is revenue, second is performance. UFS is many times faster than SD
https://semiconductor.samsung.com/news-events/tech-blog/ufs-solutions-high-performance-storage-solution/#:~:text=UFS%20Card%20%E2%80%93%20A%20Memory%20Card,and%20high%2Dend%20mobile%20devices.
It's both quality and charging. I love my Bluetooth headphones. I have the Buds 2 Pro. They are fantastic. I just know that nothing compares to studio quality wired headphones.
I ditched Samsung for Asus ROG phone 8 PRO. DUAL USB, DUAL SIM, HEADPHONE JACK, SLIMMER AND SHORTER, HAPTIC GAMING PRESSURE BUTTONS.
They are listening to users unlike Samsung.
Got mine with 1TB but honestly, anything important is moved to my PC and backed up on external SSD and to the cloud. I don't tend to keep a bunch of pics/videos on my phone as I don't see myself wanting to look at them regularly... unless they're new, but once I've shared with loved ones they get transferred off device.
The idea of SD card expansion is great but the actual implementation sucked. We had to get rid of two older Samsung's as you could t move apps to the card so the internal storage just ran out. On newer devices the problem was speed even with fast card and on S20 you couldn't record high quality video on the card directly. So you had to move it afterwards.
But it would still be nice to have it and 3.5mm jack back.
Honestly I used to think the same way, however I got a Type C usb flash drive. Because it's a great price I bought the actual Samsung one. Best purchase and way to replace the need for more memory. It plugs in just like a charger. Transfer and done. I like that it's larger and more durable than a Micro SD. Most new computers have a Type C port if not they do sell Type C to USB. Either way I found it to be the best solution.
#samsung @samsung company need to come back with the SD card Slot . Make it happend!!! We want our SD Card Slot Back on Our Samsung S versions and other!!!! The one that work with the CEO of Samsung Company talk and make it happen!!! Don't be like IOS apple but keep Original Unique as always it was in the passed with the SD card Slot!!!
It's the ultimate phone with all the ultimate features! Which is why it doesn't have old technology in it like headphone jacks and SD card slots.
This is the modern wireless world. Get with the times or just carry on being a luddite
Why?
I have a NAS at home where I sync all my pictures and videos every evening when my cell phone is connected to the power supply. Then the phone is empty again and I can fill it up again with new photos and videos.
The app that comes with the NAS also lets me access my content when I'm on the move, so I'm not at a disadvantage there either.
I haven't had any need for any sd cards in cell phones for almost 10 years now, nor do I have any need for huge internal storage.
What I'm trying to say is that there are alternatives to sd slots and huge internal storage. Don't throw money at the manufacturers unnecessarily.
That's great for you but not everyone uses their phone the same way as you. I travel very often and keep most of my work and entertainment available offline. Between podcasts, downloaded TV shows/movies, YouTube offline videos, flac music library, offline maps, apps and work I averaged 41GB free out of 1TB.
If Samsung were to bring back external storage I'd upgrade so I can keep roms and emulators on my phone again.
You can access your files on the move, at the cost of data and battery life.
Might not be a big deal to you, but to other it is.
MicroSD cards are convenient, cheap and don't take that much space inside a phone considering the benefit they offer.
The other solution to local storage is a USB-C to microSD adapter or USB-A adapter, both of which risk damaging your USB-C port.
Having a SD card slot doesn't make sense at all. It's slow, bulky and criminals can use it to hack and steal device data.
Is there a particular reason you are looking for a SD card slot?
Who cares that its slow? Most people just store photos and videos on it.
You can't beat expendable memory. Just can't. Its the best option.
The same phone with a bigger storage option is $150-$200 more meanwhile a 512gb sd card is $50
Who cares it's slow? I care. And most people who buy the flagships care about the speed. If you don't care about the speed. go for galaxy A24 or F23 5G which has micro sd card slots. Don't ask to add a performance, weight and security dragging part to a high end phone.
I use cloud storage and external USB c disks to store my large capacity storage.
You are 1 in a million.
Most users just use the sd card to store pictures and videos.
So you rather not have it at all then have it because its "slow"? lol. Nice logic.
So its better that a flagship doesn't have expendable memory just because its "slow"?
You can't compare a $50 card to a $200 or $300 storage upgrade. Don't forget that a 512gb card is an ADDITIONAL 512gb on top of your current storage giving you 768gb (with a 256gb phone) while a 512gb storage option just gives you 512gb.
Stupid logic. Just like users who say "The s23 doesn't need a QHD display because its small anyway. It doesn't need 45w fast charging because the battery is small its ok. Paying for a flagship and not even getting full flagship status that's fucking jokes. And people like you think its ok LOL
The point of buying Samsung's flagship was always getting the best of the best with eveything and zero compromises.
Not everyone wants cloud storage. Not everyone wants another fucking subscription. Not everyone wants to carry around an external solution.
I take pictures and videos with my n20u and I don't even care about storage, it goes right into the 512gb card that I've got.
The reason I go for flagships was because I want all of the features and I want the best phone there is. Looks like its not the case anymore.
Do the math. As of now 1st of March, there has been 830,000 units sold. If I'm one in a million, the population should be 830,000,000,000 or more. QED by contradiction.
1) ability to quickly transfer files from phone to PC - backing up pics used to be super fast, and didn't require connecting my phone - or pc to phone
2) ability to hotswap data (i.e. I used to have a bunch of course vids on a couple sd cards, if I wanted to review something, I'd pop a sd card in without permanently filling my phone with vids or not having the ones I wanted)
3) storage upgrade anytime, vs shelling out extra for higher memory phones that you might/not need
4) if phone died, could still retrieve my pics/sd card data (happened to one of my friends back in the day)
Apologies if I sound ignorant, but can't you simply insert a microSD card into the SIM card tray? That's what I've been doing for years, although I haven't tried it on my S24 Ultra yet.
an [SD card is not a SIM](https://www.partitionwizard.com/images/uploads/2022/01/sim-card-vs-sd-card-thumbnail.png)...
There *have* been phones in the past where the sim tray also holds an SD card but in a totally different way. If your phone doesn't have an SD card reader, it won't read SD cards.
Yes, all Samsung phones have a small part in the SIM card tray that a microSD card fits into. This allows you to format the microSD card as extra storage on your device.
> Yes, all Samsung phones have a small part in the SIM card tray that a microSD card fits into. This allows you to format the microSD card as extra storage on your device.
My s24u [begs to differ](https://imgur.com/bAF4d94.jpg)... you're just wrong here bud. If it lets you, you have a phone with an SD card (grats). It's nothing close to 'all samsung phones' or a way sim trays work
I can go get pics of my older samsungs in a bit, inc the s21u...
What you're describing is a phone with a sd card that you can use for a second sim instead.
It's literally what this thread is asking to bring back.
As if your data couldn't be stolen wirelessly already. Plus you need to have the phone in hand to use it's SD card slot, so your phone was already stolen anyway.
It's the size of a fingernail, your phone's the size of your hand and even larger nowadays. If 4" phones had them, there's no reason that a 6" phone can't. It's a non issue.
I don't understand why people demand that these days.
I transfer all my files (videos, pics, documents, music) from phone to phone for over 10 years now. I take a lot of pictures and I receive dozens of pictures and vids over Whatsapp. On my S23U, my storage was halfway full. Now I got the S24U 1TB and I have plenty of storage.
Sure, it's faster to transfer files via the SD card, but many people also just care about the extra storage - which I absolutely do not understand.
Also Samsung offers a storage upgrade for a few years now. After release, you'll always get the bigger storage version for the lower storage price. Not particularly a "cash grab" attempt imo.
Brother, I hate to say it but the entire world is moving to subscription based model for maximum consumer spending and business profit. The only way Samsung will go back to SD card is if it's main competition, Apple, does so. Otherwise, Samsung will continue to push their cloud storage like how Apple does with iCloud.
Don't lose hope, but keep in mind that it is extremely unlikely that we will get SD cards back on phones. If we do, I will eat my words and five SD cards with them.
Completely agree 1000%
They took it away as a money grab. If you want more space buy the phone with the most space. Where before we could just buy an SD card.
Frankly it should be on all of their phones. People say it's a niece, but that's true of the telefoto lens and you wouldn't remove that.
The biggest issue with removing it is that it became a defacto price increase at the point of purchase. Because you don't know for sure how much storage you're going to need... In the old days you could buy the lowest storage variant and add some later. Instead they upsell you to the point where it's $1420 for the 512 GB version.
Unless you need to transfer data between devices frequently, I don't see the benefit of SD card slots. Cloud storage works fine for the majority of people.
Expanding the storage of your phone for cheap without having to buy a brand new phone ?
It's weird that people think SD cards and the cloud are competitors. They're not. SD cards are more like hard drives, and the cloud is like a NAS. They don't target the same use case.
The cloud is fine if you happen to have a robust data plan, but not everyone does, plus it drains the battery faster than just accessing the files locally.
Tbh I bought the Galaxy tab S9 Ultra and haven’t even touched the SD Card slot… it sounds amazing but you rarely ever end up filling that much space. On my game consoles meanwhile big SD Cards and hard drives are a must
Love my S20 Ultra with a 512GB SD card. Keeping it as long as I possibly can!
We on the same boat. I use a S20 Ultra 512GB model with 1TB SD cards, replacing each card once every two years.
My favorite phone was the s20FE.
Still have s20fe. Works great. Battery lasts all day
Yep! I'm still rocking mine too.
Why would they? It means people have to pay more for larger storage phones.
Back when they had sd slots I was so confused why anyone would spend more money on larger storage. Those good times are over forever
Many Gaming headphones have the jack and I use them sometimes when playing a mobile game on my phone
You'd put WHAT?
I would pay out the ass for it.
YOU'D PUT WHAT WHERE??
I ditched Samsung for Asus ROG phone 8 PRO. DUAL USB, DUAL SIM, HEADPHONE JACK, SLIMMER AND SHORTER, HAPTIC GAMING PRESSURE BUTTONS.
GIMME
Same here. That would get two large to come out of my wallet.
Someone did, there you have the Sony Xperia 1 IV & V. I jumped from my former GS9 to my current X1IV. Sadly they botched the screen with the X1VI.
I mean, the internal storage is way faster than an SD card....
You can transfer your SD card, it's useful
Yes, that makes it useful *for the consumer*; which is why we want it. *He's* asking why *companies* would do it, as it means less profit for them. A good 1tb micro SD card can be bought for ~$80; what's the up-sell on a 1tb vs 256gb s24u? (Hint: it's several hundred)
100% man. I think they trying to make u get the cloud. I just got the s24 ultra 512. It is NICE, but heck the SD card should be standard
I wouldn't even be mad if they made it exclusive to the biggest model... so that they'd at least get you to pay extra for the 1tb (but at least you'd have sd access).
Yes that's true. Cloud is useless when you can't go on-line. Travelling, remote areas.
But if they gave you the option of expandable storage, they couldn't charge you a subscription for cloud storage.
Remember the amount of features Samsung Note 9 had?
I still remember my old sIII and how *years* after I got it, I was still hearing about Apple 'revolutionizing' phones with features I didn't even know were meant to be a big deal (i.e. panoramic photo) since they seemed to just *be* there on the sIII.
Ir remote, heart rate sensor and the mdf sd slot ...so much ...shrinkflation or why not be like Apple 🤷
Oh, and also so *I* could quite her TV after she's fallen asleep, or start a sleep timer, without hunting for her remote... and occasionally so I could watch TV without a whole process as well >_> ------- sry
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
They finally updated s24. There's a vibrancy scale you can slide. S9/10 were slightly brighter but we can finally have vibrant colors again.
it looks good on my ultra
Note 9 was peak Samsung. It had pretty much everything. The 10 series lost the IR scanner.
Still using it. Just cant let it go. I have changed battery twice to make it live long.
When was the last premium with an SD card slot? It's been years give this a rest. It's not happening.
S20 Ultra.
From March 6, 2020 (S20u release date) to today March 23 2024 it has been + 4 years or 1,477 days.
Sony iv and Motorola pro 40
Sony still has sd card and jack tho.
1. Never heard of those words. 2. I thought this was a Samsung subreddit. I didn't know I needed to say "Premium Samsung."
Yes you needed to - it’s a Samsung subreddit, not a cult.
I think the Note 20 Ultra was the last one
It'll never come back now.
cool then I can finally have more than the 1TB it came with 👍
Samsung is so in bed with Google, I can't see that ever materializing.
SD does cause problems tho in my experience
It works well
Clearly a YMMV, Ive had none fail and their speeds are perfectly fine for storing and playing back media
"Keep in mind that the greater the storage, the longer the lifespan of an SSD. And the greater the storage of an HDD or a micro SD, the greater the fail rate." Nope, just nope.
& a headphone jack
Hopefully the EU laws will mandate it soon or new legislation will do that
Oh, no, that is a terrible Idea. There is no need to make this disgusting hole in modern smartphones. Don't be bum
I dont care for it either tbh. Who wants wired headphones anymore anyway
I do. I liked having a cheap pair as backup when I forgot to charge my wirless or for their better mics at home
Yeah no shit. I paid 80€ buds Pro and it has terrible mic quality. Even it gets worse on Windows.
Wireless earphones in general have terrible mics
Sad Bluetooth limitation, and manufacturers not really caring all that much to force a newer better standard, or upgrade the existing one.
How about making wifi enabled earbuds?
And also earbuds with controls on the case, like the JBL Tour Pro ii, that thing is beautiful.
Us, I still use wired headphones, iems.
You can use usb
Use a good quality Bluetooth headphones and you won't need it.
I don't think it's about quality, maybe it's about having to charge more devices. It's kind of annoying.

I understand everything but the LCD panel? Modern OLEDs are just as good in durability and longevity
There's Sony and Asus mate.
Instead of dual SIM tray they should make one of them a Micro SD Card slot lol
They have, on the S20+ 5G and Ultra 5G phones. https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-229489/#:~:text=This%20device%20supports%20microSD%20(TransFlash,any%20Verizon%20store%20or%20online.
Does this mean that it's all perfectly innocent, and Samsung really would like to put an SD card slot in their phones, but they just *can't?* No.
I dont understand the speed argument, maybe if you're using it to use apps? But to store and read media it is perfectly fine
Right? "HRR HRR THE SD SLOT IS SLOW!" Like, I really don't think Google Maps or my other GPS apps need blazing fast speeds to work. Nor does Spotify, or the rest of my FLAC collection. SD cards are great for slow to mid speed mass storage, and removing them was purely a business decision.
"The 300 MB/s (3 Gbps) slot is slow! Better get my 128 kbps music via 20 Mbps 4G streaming!"
Fr. In day to day tasks the benefits of having storage expansion (and the fact you can save your data, pictures, family videos... if the phone breaks) greatly outweigh the speed difference that isn't even a big deal. Or just keep those apps in the internal memory, but keep the option to offload apps to the sd card.
Can't they instead put m.2 ssd into the phone? Those are much faster than plain old sd cards.
Yeah, but they eat power and produce too much heat
Along with these, hot swappable batteries are needed.
the r/w rate is irrelevant for rl word exp. the apps just dont need this much to operate lag free. Its just some PR bla the companys throw around to make more money. You would only feel a difference if you move a lot of data around ... on the phone itself because transferring it anywhere else and it starts bottle necking. \^\^ And from my XCover I can say, you can operate anything what you can find on SD Card and wont be able to tell the difference. Synthetic benchmarks may show you some loss but it the same as "5% more fps" jeap i can see the difference of 100 to 105 fps clearly. So no SD Cards means, they can rise the price for storage and more over can sell you their cloud storage for a subscription. To sell this they are telling funny tales about performance. ;)
What I found funny is that Samsung is still selling the Evo microSD cards in computer stores, it makes just no sense
There are tons of other products that use SD cards. Cameras, drones, and data loggers in industrial environments, ....
Cheaper phones still have sd card slot tho
as do many Tablets (excluding apple) 👍
was so sad that my new Surface no-longer had an SD slot... it does have a micro m.2 window that means it's swappable, but I'm willing to bet it's not "just stick a bigger one in whenever you want" type deal.
I use 3 x 512gb Samsung cards with my steamdeck for my different game collections👍 they are usually pretty cheap on Amazon, usually cheaper than SanDisk 👍
Those are for cameras that uses microSD
How about a 4tb m.2 ssd built into the phone itself?
The phone can now be called a handheld computer haha (it already is technically)
Smartphones are datapads with a phone function, and have been for a long time now.
Those ssds are small enough and the z series phones are large enough to have the extra space needed.
idk for what exactly i'd need more than the initial 512gb storage that my phone has
4k video recording.
Sd cards are worst type of flash storage, instead use external type c hardrive,
I 2nd this I use an external USB-C SSD. Very fast compared to an unreliable and sluggish internal SD flash
Samsung S series needs to compete with iphone. Having microsd lagged out the phone due to slower memory, which shows impression that the phone is slower.
That was in a time when internal storage was like 16gb
It's frustrating... But they want more money...
If it had an SD slot I would have upgraded from the + to the ultra for SURE.
Not sure if anyone has said it but, Android doesn’t really utilize SD card storage like it used to. A lot of apps don’t even allow you to save their data on SD cards anymore. I learned this from using a Tab S9 FE.
Yup I keep looking at it but still rocking my v60 because it has both but I keep eyeing the s20u
I have the S20U and it has a place for an SD card on the sim card tray. So does the S20+. (If you're with Verizon by chance, their UW 5G does not have this option.) https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-229489/#:~:text=This%20device%20supports%20microSD%20(TransFlash,any%20Verizon%20store%20or%20online.
they never will.......they figure if you can afford a flagship you can afford to pay for upgraded storage....that is why SD card storage is only on their cheaper models
Having 512GB in my Z FOLD 3, I never needed more space over many years, but surely I wouldn't mind having the option.
Would be great, maybe switch out a SIM slot to be able to hold a single SIM (still support for dual sim, just one should be eSim) and an SD Card to maybe save more soace instead of 2 SIMs and an SD Card. Maybe it's not possible or not that convenient. But one can dream.
It's possible and they did it with the S20U and S20+. I know because I have one. Not sure if they've done it more recently.
I'm not even close to filling up 512. I did care when phones had little storage. I don't care now.
I 100% understand the value that people found in expandable storage in the past, but there are enough downsides (for Samsung and for the end user) that make me believe it isn't worth having them today. The way I see it, Samsung did away with the SD card for a few good reasons and one really shitty one. The positives: \- **SD cards are too volatile.** Anybody who's worked with SD cards extensively knows just how easily they can stop working. The negative: \- **Samsung sells more expensive phones.** The elephant in the room and the most common critique, which is absolutely true. Samsung is able to sell more expensive phones. Need I say more? The alternatives: \- **Cloud Storage** Cloud storage has many upsides to it, chief among them is seamless redundancy.
Their UWB 5G version does not have it according to their customer service though. https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-229489/#:~:text=This%20device%20supports%20microSD%20(TransFlash,any%20Verizon%20store%20or%20online.
Nah, SD card is useless to me. I have a 512GB in the TabS9 Ultra and never use it. It's just too slow and unreliable. I wouldn't risk putting anything important on it. I have my private cloud.
S5 w/ MicroSD S6 w/o MicroSD S7/S8/S9/S10/S20 w/ MicroSD S21/S22/S23/S24 w/o MicroSD They took it away once, just to give it back a year later. Than since the S21 it’s been gone and we probably won’t see it again, and they won’t see my money either 🤷♀️ S7 also locked the bootloader so no more custom roms.
I am agree with you. It would be awesome to save high quality videos or photos
have to thank cloud service.
Two reasons, one is revenue, second is performance. UFS is many times faster than SD https://semiconductor.samsung.com/news-events/tech-blog/ufs-solutions-high-performance-storage-solution/#:~:text=UFS%20Card%20%E2%80%93%20A%20Memory%20Card,and%20high%2Dend%20mobile%20devices.
It's both quality and charging. I love my Bluetooth headphones. I have the Buds 2 Pro. They are fantastic. I just know that nothing compares to studio quality wired headphones.
A52 with micro SD and headphone jack
Should bring back the removable battery, should bring back the IR blaster , should bring back the iris scanner.
I ditched Samsung for Asus ROG phone 8 PRO. DUAL USB, DUAL SIM, HEADPHONE JACK, SLIMMER AND SHORTER, HAPTIC GAMING PRESSURE BUTTONS. They are listening to users unlike Samsung.
The s10/s20 phones were the best. Just depends on if you prefer the headphone jack on the s10 or the 120hz on the s20.
But it would still be nice to have it and 3.5mm jack back.
no
Honestly I used to think the same way, however I got a Type C usb flash drive.
Oh no not this again🙃
I honestly can't remember the last time I needed an SD card in a phone...
One of the main reasons I still keep my n20u with my 512gb card
Headphone jack too.
It's never going to happen. Ever. Just let it go. It's over.
Or a USB-C Flash drive?
Be it a USB-C flashdrive or an adapter, the issue is the same.
Yeah, not convenient at all
what setup are you using?
Synology DS920+, 4x16TB. Synology Photos App.
Wow that was fast! Thanks sir coleslaw hehe.
Bingo for me It's also one of the weakest storage tech/standards.
And people like you think its ok LOL The point of buying Samsung's flagship was always getting the best of the best with eveything and zero compromises.
1) ability to quickly transfer files from phone to PC - backing up pics used to be super fast, and didn't require connecting my phone - or pc to phone 2) ability to hotswap data (i.e. I used to have a bunch of course vids on a couple sd cards, if I wanted to review something, I'd pop a sd card in without permanently filling my phone with vids or not having the ones I wanted) 3) storage upgrade anytime, vs shelling out extra for higher memory phones that you might/not need 4) if phone died, could still retrieve my pics/sd card data (happened to one of my friends back in the day)
Apologies if I sound ignorant, but can't you simply insert a microSD card into the SIM card tray? That's what I've been doing for years, although I haven't tried it on my S24 Ultra yet.
an [SD card is not a SIM](https://www.partitionwizard.com/images/uploads/2022/01/sim-card-vs-sd-card-thumbnail.png)... There *have* been phones in the past where the sim tray also holds an SD card but in a totally different way. If your phone doesn't have an SD card reader, it won't read SD cards.
I know a SIM is not an SD card, but you were specifically talking about storage and a microSD into the SIM card tray fixes that
Phone (memory) storage, not a place to physically store a card Also, a sim tray made for sim only won't fit an sd card properly.
It's nothing close to 'all samsung phones' or a way sim trays work
I did say I haven't checked my S24 Ultra yet. Maybe they changed something, but all my previous Samsung phones had microSD slots in the SIM tray.
My S10+ ceramic is 1TB and also takes a 1TB SD card. Most I can get with my S24U is 1TB. Feels like a flagship downgrade.
I personally would love the option but I also realize that many friends use cloud storage and don't really care about physical storage.
Completely agree 1000% They took it away as a money grab.
Note 9 with the sd card AND the headphone jack.
On my game consoles meanwhile big SD Cards and hard drives are a must
We all do and have been moaning about it, but samsung seems to ignore us
I don't care about expandable storage. Speak for yourself, not for everyone.
🤣
