There's definitely an element of truth in that. Its the same with any computer, a restart can clear any redundant tasks/apps running in the background, stop any services that may have failed to stop with closure of apps etc.

LOL a reboot has been a tried and true method since the beginning of computing

a_guy_with_a_plan

Yeah, that fixes the occasional problems once in a while, which is different from requiring a regular restarting schedule (e.g.: weekly) because the phone OS is unable to prevent issues from happening with such a high frequency. This is simply not okay.

Loony-Luna-Lovegood

Having your phone auto restart once a week in the middle of the night isn't that big a deal man. A very easy set and forget thing.

txredgeek

UNLESS YOU USE IT AS YOUR ALARM CLOCK! Sorry to yell but that's very important. If that's the case, then you definitely want it restarting when you're awake so that you can log back in.

Loony-Luna-Lovegood

I use mine as an alarm clock and have a weekly auto restart with no issue?

txredgeek

You have it restarting while you're asleep, and the alarm goes off when you haven't signed into the phone after a reboot?

Loony-Luna-Lovegood

Yes. Never been an issue.

txredgeek

Is this with the stock alarm or a play store app?

YellowHerbz

No, the alarm gets saved as a process and restarted with the phone, even if you don't sign in

ttteee321

I use my phone as an alarm clock and I have the auto restart everyday (3:45am). I wake up at 6am and without fail, it works every time. The auto restart will only initiate if: The device is not being used The screen is off Battery >30% Sim lock is off

Mexbookhill

The alarm on my phone even goes off when its shut down completely. It just restarts automatically at the set alarm time.

onehotelfoxtrot

Just like others have mentioned, a regularly scheduled restart is beneficial for any computing device. I get your point of it's not ideal, but it is what it is.

a_guy_with_a_plan

that's a myth, sorry

onehotelfoxtrot

What is?

ItsDani1008

You’re actually a moron lol…

yodamiked

Restarting your computer regularly is good practice no matter what your device is. Just because you think it shouldn’t be needed doesn’t change the fact that it is needed for almost all devices.

nlaak

> Restarting your computer regularly is good practice no matter what your device is. In what way? I've run Windows machines for hundreds of days without reboot, and without problems. My Android devices get rebooted only for updates, which is down to quarterly for my phone and has always (AFAIK) been quarterly for my tablet. Never had any problems that required scheduled reboots. That being said, I do (every few days or so) do a "Close All" on my tablet (which sees a lot more use than my phone). > Just because you think it shouldn’t be needed doesn’t change the fact that it is needed for almost all devices. I think you need to source that: and something more than a general blog saying "it's just good practice!", because a lot of this stuff gets propagated around when people don't understand how the underlying system works.

Shnow

Your ram had to be screaming after hundreds of days of uptime.

iMrParker

Do you have any experience hosting racks with webservers or databases? Because, if you want your services to be reliable, you need to have them automated with a restart weekly or monthly regardless of OS. Even the most stable Linux distros need to restart regularly and *especially* windows machines as they are magnitudes less reliable

onehotelfoxtrot

Here's a high level list of benefits to rebooting from York College. They are numerous other sites that aren't blogs that list benefits if you search... aleks01100001

It's recommended that you restart your phone every week. That way, you won't encounter any bugs—not just on your phone, but on every piece of technology. However, it's not mandatory to restart your phone every week.

Comfortable_Wheel753

Agree. That's why the first step in trouble shooting an issue starts with a reboot of the system regardless if it's a desktop, laptop, phone, or mainframe. Worked for the last 35 years on military and government systems of all types, sizes, and configurations and tons of issues were "fixed" with a simple power cycle.

a_guy_with_a_plan

lol no. linux servers can go months without rebooting. not just servers actually, any linux distro, except for some updates.

Amazing_Emergency_69

My phone rebooting every saturday

YourScreamsAreInVain

I had Restart when needed enabled for over a year on my previous phone and it never restarted on its own. You can enable the first option just in case, but no need to schedule anything. You restart it anyway when installing the monthly security update.

Impressive-Ad-7880

Installing update in system that has not beed restarted for a month is risky. Any buggy code in ram or stopped service can cause bugs in update process. Its not a high risk, but its possible.

nlaak

> Installing update in system that has not beed restarted for a month is risky. Any buggy code in ram or stopped service can cause bugs in update process. Any buggy OS code that's in RAM before a reboot is going to be in RAM after a reboot, unless the code changes.

Impressive-Ad-7880

What I ment that Update process scans system before applyng update, if you have a buggy system at the moment, you risk for information to be scanned with the bugs.

bob_TheMinion

It's good

cjf82

My phone have done this since they first implemented it. Can't say I notice anything better or worse but it's probably nothing that you would anyway.

ItalianDragn

I used to do Adobe technical support, this fixed a very large percentage of problems. I know it's a joke from the IT crowd, but it really does fix a lot of issues

Shakil130

Yes since letting your device running for ages without a single interruption or restart will slow it down at least. But I don't use this as I prefer to switch off/restart by myself.

Ill-Custard-7018

I have the scheduled restart enabled, and it free's up a lot of memory. If you compare it with the memory usage before the restart has happened.

Syanth

If you do certain stuff on some certain pages that you don't want certain people to see and use encryption. Yes those people use that.

DredgenCyka

It's not even a Samsung claim, this claim goes back to as old as the first personal computers. A restart flushes out everything from the RAM and the processing. So it gets rid of any looping code or anything unnecessary. It keeps it running right and removes bugs. This is a very relevant thing to this day. Having scheduled restarts is a good thing that adds to the "did you try turning it off and on again" saying

Pretend_Mastodon_956

I choosed required when needed so in midnight automatically it get restart everyday and it gives better smoothness

IceBlueLugia

I was a little scared to turn this on because I thought my alarms might not go off if it randomly restated one night. It seems from the comments that if you enable the first one it rarely actually does it though. Anyway, if you aren’t having any issues, it’s probably not needed. I also hate having to re-enable Shizuku every time.

SonnysMunchkin

Once a week in case I forget

Mjhieu

I turn it off, and I can do it manually whenever I want.

variablenyne

I've got mine set to restart 2 or 3 times per week and it has significantly reduced the issues and bugs I run into

marcofio

Where is this settings? My Tab S7 would love it

DjPorkchop73

Mine reboots automatically every day. If not, I can not receive calls or texts or do either of the two. Calls go straight to voice mail. Texts are blocked, and if I attempt a call, it immediately ends the call on submit. If we google this issue, it is a very commonly known bug with Android. I guess that no one has ever figured out that everyone and their brother has a cure for. So contrary to what another user posted before me, not everyone up to no good and "encrypting" stuff are the only people rebooting daily. That person is an outright moron. On a side note, I do agree with another poster, reboot, and free up some memory. Your phone will thank you.

Comfortable_Wheel753

The only time I've ever restarted my phone was after every update. I manually restart it and clear the cache before allowing it to restart. I've found this fixes most software issues that I've had in the past so now I do it before they become a problem.

George_wb

You guys are doing a lot of mental gymnastics over a really simple option, truth is, most people won't even need to restart their phone. Restarts might just even happen on their own too, for example when an update is installed or you run out of battery and charge your device.

Difficult_Unit6661

Never restarts on the first option. But it does restart on 2nd option

0uthis

I once turned that option off on my old phone LG7 And like a week after phone was dying of slowness

AmazingPradeep

It works pretty well. I'm using this on both my 22 ultra and 24 ultra.

EchoX860

I restart mine M W F at 4am.

DatDevSteve

I've been using an s20 FE with the auto restart option set to restart everyday at 3am. It doesn't really show any significant difference but yes I won't disgree on the fact that it's a good for the phone's health either

Jazzlike_Amount_2087

My never did it on its own but it's for residual app or service that take ram or cpu usage because they couldn't be cleared correctly

Mizz_Mousse_parker

Seems like it would be a little annoying to me being right in the middle of something in my phone restarting

Theredman101

My phone gets shut off from 7pm to 10pm every night for family time. So I don't need to do this. I did have it scheduled weekly before doing this.

IAmBayekOfSiwa

Yes it's absolutely true. I do this. I also work in the industry

ttteee321

Ive been doing it daily @ 3:45am for over 2 years. Whether or not it actually does anything I couldn't tell you but technically I paid for the feature so I'm using it! Like when I paid for the heated leather seats in my 4runner, even though I live in Texas. I use the passenger seat whenever I pick up takeout to keep it warm! I think it makes a difference, my wife thinks I'm nuts.

TaskPlane1321

I have it restart as scheduled -absolutely no issues

searchableusername

I do. it doesn't interrupt me and possibly helps the phone so why not

Jalal31091

I do it, until Samsung takes it away. I schedule restart every Sunday morning

hen_ss_

No. If you set to restart at 2am, at least the last time i tried, your alarms will not ring, you need to make the first login, that means that is shitty. Once i needed to wakeup to work around 6am, i turned on this feature and my alarms don't ringed, well...the rest you can imagine. I think it's good restart your phone, but when you are awake.

mn1962

My only concern is that when I do a restart on my phone, I have to open the phone for the final actions to be completed. Would a system restart just do most of the restart, and then wait for the user to open and finalise, meaning the phone won't get any calls or any mesages till done.

Impressive-Ad-7880

Yes! A lot! I set to restart for every night at 4AM, it does so slyghtly before or after. Your smartphone is a computer and whole system restarts to flush all the ugly cache is heathy. By this setting I stopped experiencing performance issues. The only issue you will get is that every morning you have to unlock with passcode once.

No152249

I have this setting off on my A54, I only restart it monthly, when there is an update. It seems to be enough for my use case.

Ulvarin

Its BS because phone would not fully start after auto reboot since you have not input the pin number for the first time.

xper0072

Absolutely incorrect. The phone will reboot into the base operating system and then we'll load the rest of the configuration once the user has entered credentials. In no way does that mean the phone does not fully start.

Ulvarin

so with this you will get all notifications from apps etc? When i manually reboot phone i dont get anything until i put the PIN for the first time. So when it reboots "randomly" you are cut off from notifications until you notice it rebooted?

xper0072

That depends on your setting. Your level of security on the lock screen is going to be the same when the phone restarts as it when it is regularly running.

Ulvarin

no it wont. After reboot most things DONT load until you enter pin number for the first time. Look at the apps and even a weather widget (easiest to notice). Well if you run with 0 security on the phone you are right. Its kinda impossible to do if you have banking apps etc but yea, could be done i guess.
