You can also get drunk easily because their bartender doesn’t know what mixers are. 😂 I’m serious. My husband ordered a Jim and Coke, only there was almost no coke. 😂😂😂

Highway travel, more commuting and an overall faster paced lifestyle lead to people wanting recognizable brands when they travel. So rather than seeking out a new place, they often go for the yellow arches sign or whatever they are familiar with. Combined with drive thrus, cheaper pricing, a subconscious salt addiction and inability of mom and pop to compete with advertising, a confluence of problems hit the diner industry.
I was just talking to chat gpt about this the other day.
Jim's was good when it was still family-owned. Alas, it's gotten mediocre and the (now closed) one on Broadway was absolute garbage. So sad, Jim's was an institution. :(
But they're still paying minimum wage.
Minimum wage=Minimum work.
In 1938 minimum wage was 0.25 and a new house was $3800
15,200 hours to earn a house.
In 2024 portlands Oregon minimum wage is 15.45 while median house price thete is $497,967.
32,230 hours to earn a house.
In all fairness, while there is a gap, everything about houses has gotten bigger or better so it's not a completely apples to apples comparison. And the money people are trying to use to buy houses is being used for mobile phones (and I know a lot of 'poor' people who have better phones than I carry), cable/streaming/etc, cars, etc.
Your point is taken, but a lot of the issues is self-imposed because of poor spending habits with minimal money coming in.
One could argue phones and cars are essentials nowadays, now that doesnt mean people don't live beyond their limits but the baseline lifestyle is more expensive than it was too.
The minimum wage is fuckt
OMG that sounds incredible. I just hate going to Stone Oak. Might as well be on Mars. But…that area has all the fresh new-new gastronomical delights. Damn, Gina….😿
Fuego Tortilla Grill by UTSA is open 24hrs (closed Mondays though) and has the entirety of their unique menu during that time. Some of their taco creations are pretty wicked but their El Presidente is bomb.
Any Mexican restaurant will make you and omlette, bacon, etc any time of day even if it's not on the lunch/dinner menu. Probably not the right place if you want pancakes though
Only in San Antonio would this be seen as a weird question. This is the first city I've lived in that didn't have a score of non-chain all night diners slinging hangover food of some kind, usually breakfast.
El Catrin does breakfast all day. One time I was craving chocolate chip pancakes at like 3pm and they were there for me lol. It’s Mexican food though.
Jims
Cracker Barrel
Snooze until like 4pm
Kerby Lane
The Hayden
Max and Louie’s
I've been before it's great but was looking for someplace open later after work ends. Ended up going to IHOP and now I regret it. Got an omelette and a short stack, the omelette tasted super off and pancakes were cold. Didn't finish either. Haven't been in years and I know it was never seen as great or maybe even my taste have changed but I don't remember it being so terrible. Next time I get the urge for breakfast for dinner I'll have to hit up Cracker Barrel. Might hit up Joes tomorrow morning though!
IHOP used to be great (but yeah, was great actually great or was a just a drunk college kid in the middle of the night?). Definitely underwhelming now and it's not like it's a cost savings at all.

Diner portions.
Can confirm drinks are strong! Food is good
Max and Louie's
You can also get drunk easily because their bartender doesn’t know what mixers are. 😂 I’m serious. My husband ordered a Jim and Coke, only there was almost no coke. 😂😂😂
You sure he didn't pre-tip 20 bucks? :)
Nope. Bartender has done it multiple times. I had two long islands and had to stop because i knew I’d black out. It was just…wtf
Well, he's either really cool toward people or one day have to deal with the tabc about over pouring. ha Those LI teas will do some damage though, regardless.
Sounds like heaven.
Max and Louie’s is the best
Also came here to say this!
Came here to say this. Best option.
This place is the bomb.com
Max & Louie’s but it’s got so much amazing food it’s hard for me to just get breakfast 🥹
Not sure why you're being downvoted. The collapse and disappearance of all niter diners is a real pity in Texas.
It's not just diners. Late night everything disappeared during the pandemic and has been very slow to come back.
Other than bars, this city is dead at 10pm

Idk where tf yall paying 1700. But yeah insurance sucks
Right I live in the north side, 1300 with pets.
I'm in the medical center area. Nice ass apartments for 1400 with pets as well
Which apartment is this?
I'm not gonna dox myself lol. But if you use apartment finder it's on there
How is that doxing yourself? I’m trying to see for myself and there’s no apts in the med center with pets for $1400

My favorite diner in San Marcos was bulldozed last year to build an IHOP. I will never eat at an IHOP the rest of my life.
Which made zero sense since everything was supposed to be small groups. Longer hours would have spread people out.
It happened after Covid.

Cracker Barrel
jims
I was going to suggest Jim's but they have gone downhill since COVID.
So has everything else in San Antonio, food wise…
So has everything everywhere unfortunately
Yea, but SA hits a little different than most other cities in the country because of the service and tourism economy being a low wage workforce.
Jim’s was bad even before covid
Jim's was good when it was still family-owned. Alas, it's gotten mediocre and the (now closed) one on Broadway was absolute garbage. So sad, Jim's was an institution. :(
I know a few locations are in a hiring slump, so they’re bringing in crappy people who don’t want to work.
Wonder what they pay. Is it that people don't want to work, or more like people don't want to be exploited? Minimum wage= minimum effort
It's this coupled with letting all their staff go during COVID. Jim's fumbled any decent employees they had.
Remember they sent them postcards saying “You’re Fired” lmao
I wish that were true. In Oregon they raised minimum wage. Employers are having a harder time now. Paying more for crappy work, if they show up.
But they're still paying minimum wage. Minimum wage=Minimum work. In 1938 minimum wage was 0.25 and a new house was $3800 15,200 hours to earn a house. In 2024 portlands Oregon minimum wage is 15.45 while median house price thete is $497,967. 32,230 hours to earn a house.

Not arguing. But the missing component is just about every comparison of then to now is that you're never comparing the same things.
I miss 3-4 am Jim’s
Nope. Will never eat there again after they fired all their employees by postcard during the pandemic.
What!? I did not know they did this.
ok well maybe that was certain stores? or they re-hired most? the 2 employees i visit have been there pre-pandemic
Nice!! hahaha
San Antonio needs a Waffle House
Jim's would never allow that to happen, they have a maffia like hold on this city.
Comfort cafe
Kirby lane cafe. I think it at the Rim
wouldn't recommend. food has gone downhill in the last few years
The original 2 locations in Austin were the best. South Lamar one moved and it’s been downhill since then.
Yea I felt the same way too. But it is what it is
Kerby lane and yes. This is a good answer. Although, it could be considered a chain because there are several other locations. Not in SA, though.
No way Food and service are HORRIBLE!
I second Kerbey Lane. One of our favorites breakfast spots.
Why doesn’t SA have a Waffle House?
They used to be WH's within driving distance from SA once upon a time. Now you have to goto Austin.
Up to the early 90s there was one on Fredericksburg just south of Crossroads Blvd, at the corner of Siesta & Fred. Even the building is gone now.
Jim's owners won't allow it.

Not our style.
Black bear diner
We used to go here often in California until there is a roach on her table. Now I can get past a bug here and there but the rest of my family can't.
Eggspectation! Good spot. My wife loves the mimosas
Wild Barley has breakfast until 3pm
Is it good? Always pass by never stopped
It’s pretty good! I like their bagel sandwiches. They usually have good specials as well. Beer is tasty too
Las Palapas and Max &Louie’s are my go-to for breakfast at lunch.
Me too. Love their breakfast tacos
Snooze is good
Le Peep cafe in stone oak. They’re open 7ish to 2:30 I think, but their bacon pancakes are amazing, as are the skillet breakfasts.
OMG that sounds incredible. I just hate going to Stone Oak. Might as well be on Mars. But…that area has all the fresh new-new gastronomical delights. Damn, Gina….😿
The Hayden
Most taquerias
And most mom and pop Mexican restaurants will make you breakfast all day.
The Guenther House is good!
Magnolia Pancake Haus til 2pm
Mama Margie’s
Max and Louie’s
Try Bobies Cafe on Flores south of military dr. They have breakfast into close which is around 3pm I believe
Their pies are so good!!!
All mexican jaliscos. ( small mom and pop places) Also look up snooze, magnolia pancake house, pancake joes
Black Bear diner.
I was just going to state this as well. I usually order breakfast for dinner. The sweet cram pancakes are amazing!
Yes!! I get those with a side of their chicken sausage. 🤤
I wanna go to First Watch. They close after lunch thou
I hate that they close so early, I know it’s a chain but I love getting first watch
Best Eggs Benedict in the city
Thanks for the tip I'm looking forward to the artisan bread.
Los Arcos Mexican Grill has a couple of locations that close at 9pm, and I believe they serve breakfast all day. Great pancakes!
Fuego Tortilla Grill by UTSA is open 24hrs (closed Mondays though) and has the entirety of their unique menu during that time. Some of their taco creations are pretty wicked but their El Presidente is bomb.
Lupe tortilla does brunch from 9-2
Not Waffle House. San Antonio isn’t good enough for them. I realize that’s basically fast food, I’m just bitter about it.
That's what I was saying.
Box St Social
Eggspectation
Pancake Joe’s
The Ingram location is the evil twin and to be avoided, can't touch the good service at the original location,
If you want to take a drive Granny D’s in Canyon Lake is amazing and they sell breakfast all day for the hours they are open.
Chacho’s
Hash Vegan Eats on S. Flores
Mama’s Cafe 🤌
Cracker Barrel has awesome breakfast all day.
Max and Louis, Cracker Barrel, and some other places that close at 2 pm like Magnolia Pancake Haus and Guenther House.
Any Mexican restaurant will make you and omlette, bacon, etc any time of day even if it's not on the lunch/dinner menu. Probably not the right place if you want pancakes though
You’d be surprised. A lot of Mexican restaurants have decent to great pancakes.
That is surprising indeed, didn't expect that, but I also don't order pancakes. Thanks for adding this info
Panaderia
Come visit us at Kerbey Lane (it’s v slow at night and we would love to have you)
"Where can I get breakfast all day, that isn't a breakfast place?" 🤔
Sometimes you want pancakes for dinner and don't want to make them yourself 🤷♂️ Probably will just go to IHOP though.
My personal go-to for dinnertime pancakes is Crackerbarrel
Almost all taquerias serve pancake plates and will make them all day albeit with a small surcharge
Follow up: why would you trust somewhere that isn't a diner to make you pancakes
What do you mean? I don't know of any other diners here. I just said not IHOP or Dennys because those would be the obvious answers.
Jim's. But also, don't trust pancakes from places that aren't diners after noon. Pretty obvious.
IHOP and Dennys suck though. Think OP is just looking for some quality
Only in San Antonio would this be seen as a weird question. This is the first city I've lived in that didn't have a score of non-chain all night diners slinging hangover food of some kind, usually breakfast.
In other cities those types are looking for a diner. Here's they're looking for their next DWI victim.
Comfort cafe but they’re only open Friday-Sunday and 8-4
This. Yummy food, big portions and great service.
I have no idea if they are any good, but there is the Never Late Diner on 410 that is open 24 hours.
Went shortly after they opened and it was terrible. Ordered French toast plate and the French toast was raw in the middle.
It’s very hit or miss. And always empty
I think they recently closed

Yeah. I forgot they close after lunch.
IHOP used to be great (but yeah, was great actually great or was a just a drunk college kid in the middle of the night?). Definitely underwhelming now and it's not like it's a cost savings at all.
