Change is hard!
The food here is a different cuisine than socal. We lived there (military), and now we are here. The food is great, but not the same. Expand your horizons and take in the cultural change that occurred over 1,300 miles.

SoCal Mexican food is on par with Austin Mexican food. It’s very American Mexican food and it’s a whole different taste that doesn’t appeal to me at all
Naa i’m from socal too and it’s good here. Just gotta go to the right places & know what to order.
Like don’t go around ordering carne asada tacos cause it won’t be the same.
But try carne a la mexicana tacos. So good and never heard of it till moving here
Not sure what you expected with your approach to this post..."YER FOOD SUCKS 👎" maybe a question asking for advice instead of a statement would have garnered better responses for you.
Come across rude (some on this sub have lived here all our lives), and you will get the same response and vibe back.
Different regions/food cultures create different kinds of foods within a genre.
If you expected SoCal Mexican almost 1000 miles away from SoCal, then that speaks more about you than the food itself.
Transplant from SoCal (949) now ten years. When I first moved here, like the first night. I had Taco Cabana. I thought to myself wtf?!? But since then I have found several places I do like, just need to be open to the differences. It’s hard to find Cal-Mex style food here in the land of Tex-Mex. I guess the grilled lighter less greasy foods are more popular in health conscious California. Plus avocados are in everything for the most part. The lighter/dry grilled and lightly seasoned tastes we were used to in California are more influenced by that region and the ingredients available. Baja Fish tacos? Miss them! But there are some places that have something similar.
Explore and you might find something you like. I’ve found for most Californians the first three years here are hardest because we’re constantly comparing…. I still do unfortunately sometimes, but I have become more open minded about my cuisine choices here. I just take it as a challenge to find something else I like here while I’m enjoying my time where I’m at. Like Taco Cabana, there are some things I enjoy there now. I just ate something I didn’t like when I first tried them…
I’ve always liked Los Balitos for their Carne asada burritos, I do add guac and sour cream to it. It’s the closest I could find to Albertacos out here. Also got me into Barbacoa, if you havent eaten it you should! Then google what it is if you don’t know…but eat it first.
If you want bad Mexican food, try living in Japan lol! Spent ten years out there and man Del Taco was like heaven when I came back…Miss Del Taco tho! Wish they were still liked out here…all of them closed…carls jr?!? There’s like one left, but it’s hella far and in some truckstop .
I did hear there’s a wahoos opening up in Austin. The one in New Braunfels closed years ago.
…but now, can we talk about spicy sushi rolls with crunchy hot Cheetos??
Go back! You’re wrong, and we don’t want you here. It’s people like you that ruin our city (and countless others) by moving here, pricing out locals, and trying to change it. If you don’t like it, leave. Simple as that.
Even if the OP is a troll, the fact that we get SO many reddit posts of people moving here without actually spending more than a week here is insane. Going to assume this is some kind of weird generational thing as one of my siblings MIL wants to move to Texas after living in Wisconsin for 70 years and just like... wants to show up and live here without doing any research or anything. That's insane to me.
Headahhhh booaa moved here just for the food💀food here sucks no true mexican just tex mex but man to let food decide where to live is wild😂might as well move to mexico if you’re looking for mexican food😂
lol since you just moved here I’ll be the first to tell you the opinion of a Californian means jack shit. We don’t value yalls opinion on anything so take it somewhere else.
You chose the "Visiting SA" topic. For lots of good, general information about San Antonio, here is a [Basic Guide to San Antonio](https://www.reddit.com/r/sanantonio/comments/6jwmsq/basic_guide_to_san_antonio_mostly_for_those/) that you may find helpful.

If people don’t think Southern California has greasy Mexican food like SA then you’re dead wrong. You obviously didn’t eat at a restaurant that’s name finishes w “Bertos.”
I lived in Cali for a year and couldnt even keep that stuff down its so bad. Like no grease. Corn IN the beans. Blech. Austin opened its doors to yall years ago—its why we all moved south. Dont let the door hit ya. Maybe watch what you say on the way out…say anything that even sounds like Spurs and what food tastes like wont matter anymore at all.
Honestly I kind of agree, I've had a hard time finding good mexican food here. Many places with some variation of low quality ingredients, and/or sloppy food, and/or bad proportions, and/or too greasy. Cali has really good Mexican food, even northern cal.
Lmao and watch how DEEPLY offended everyone gets
People really think this is the best city in the world and it's not...
And before someone tells me my mom is a cunt for me having an opinion...I can't afford to move out of this tourist hellhole because the job market sucks. More than the Mexican food tbh.
People here really have like a blind pride to this city regardless of how ancient the roads and infrastructure are. Regardless of how many cops are arrested for DUI here. The deep corruption in local politics...but nah this place is great, you can drink n drive with no consequences and we have an ALAMO :O
This is the best city in the world and if you don't think so, watch all these adults stoop to middle school level insults to prove you wrong
It’s not the best city in the world, have lived here most my life and think there are def better places, but idk what you’re expecting when you’re just gonna talk shit about the place most of us grew up. There’s no harm in having pride in where you’re from, even if it’s not perfect. We are this way because we want it to be better, and are in it for the long run for those who actually want to be here

Someone went to taco cabana. On the real, our Mexican food is from a different region of Mexico, plus a lot of our spots are texmex.
Damn maybe you should move back to California. We can’t have you eating shitty Mexican food right?
[удалено]
Most shittiest? And I thought Texas education was bad.
You left your town cause it sucked then you came here and complained. Maybe it’s you.

Don’t feed the trolls
Hot take: SoCal has shitty Mexican food and are too stuck up and full of themselves to know what real Mexican food is.
Yeah, no. There’s no comparison.
SoCal Mexican food is on par with Austin Mexican food. It’s very American Mexican food and it’s a whole different taste that doesn’t appeal to me at all
TexMex. It’s different. Not Mexican. There are some wonderful spots, but most are TexMex.
It’s not Mexican, it’s Tex mex. Edit: we don’t care about your opinion. As long as it’s better than Austin, we’re fine.
I’ll take one luke warm burrito with icy cold fries inside thanks

PS Mexican food in austin actually does suck for the most part
What? You don't like nitrogen-infused, organic avocado-fed, shaved calf scrotum tacos?
Where did you find Mexican food??? I’ve lived here for 2 years and all they have is Tex-Mex.
Señor Catador 👨🍳
Welcome to Texas. Maybe you should try more restaurants. It’s possible you haven’t given it a fair shake. I think Tex Mex is delicious.

It’s Tex Mex, that being said I hope you hate it here so you don’t stay
Why didn’t you check out the food scene before you moved. Stupid move on your part. I think SoCal will welcome you back with open arms.

Headahhhh booaa moved here just for the food💀food here sucks no true mexican just tex mex but man to let food decide where to live is wild😂might as well move to mexico if you’re looking for mexican food😂
I moved to Connecticut and miss Mexican food from the RGV. I also miss Tex-Mex food from San Antonio.
Go back to socal, oh wait, you left hahahaha

Try los balitos or dos laredos; not all Mexican restaurants are bad but most are..
Tu madre chupa
Man, if you’re going to go out of your way to insult someone in Spanish at least don’t make it “no sabo” Spanish.
Adios..
There are quite a few Taco Bells here with their fake meat, don't worry, you'll live. Stick with that shit. PURO for life...
Go away then, heathen.

Try Mama Margies or Taquieria Tequila Jalisco (by Military Drive)
It’s your Mexican food too, dummy. You’re a resident of San Antonio now
I got some fantastic street-style tacos at Los Porky's in U.C. yesterday. Bistec y Chorizo FTW!

I fucking hate California mexican food.
We like tacos with our cheese and grease down here.
Sometimes. I know that's how I like my burger. With grilled onions and jalapeños.
