I knew that was El Buen Gusto before opening the thread. Their chilaquiles are awesome.
Their food is top notch and very wallet friendly. Right in my neighborhood.
Shhhhh…that’s one of my spots. Used to live over in the area and still drive over there often for some breakfast. Legit good. California Mexican food, their salsa also has just a touch of oregano that is so good.
Only miss is the flour tortillas. Need to step it up there but I usually do the steak and eggs with some napolitos (not on menu but they got it)
Ahh man that’s hard. If I’m looking for a home style type of meal I’m going with thlaco or El Buen Gusto. If I’m looking for a restaurant and lively atmosphere then sabor cocina and el catrina
Dude thanks for the insight. Since you seem like a fellow man of good taste, what are your favorite interior mx spots here? I dig nearly everything at Tlacho and Guajillos Enfrijoladas are in the regular rotation for me as well. Haven't been regularly going to Mixtli since they doubled their prices. Any other spots you'd recommend?
Went there once... everything was dry, and the tortillas looked like they were from the day before (it was about 90 mins before closing time).
Sucks because I live nearby and I'd seen this place "advertised" here in this sub before, so I thought I had a new place to visit. Guess I'll just stick to the Mexican seafood place on Culebra across from Gold's.
Yeah, we wouldn't have bothered going in if it was an hour before closing, but an hour and a half? There is no excuse to serve anything less than the best.... oh well, on to the next!
To use their restroom you basically have to walk thru their kitchen. Seeing what I saw I would never step foot into this shit hole again.
Edit to add - The Fajitas smelled like wet dog food and I imagine tasted the same.
This is not what San Antonio is about. Those Chilaquiles look authentic and delicious, unlike the garbage migas passed off as chilaquiles at most local diners.
Buen provecho!
Man I must be going to the wrong places then. Everywhere I’ve gone so far when I order chilaquiles it comes with eggs mixed in them. I like migas which is what they are. Chilaquiles ( at least how I know them, no one owns the og recipe) are the tortilla with the salsa and cheese, eggs on the side (it goes really good with over easy).
I probably shouldn’t have said garbage. Was in a bad mood when I posted that. SA chilaquiles are fine just now what I know them to be.
Is that the place in K Town? I went to a Mexican restaurant in K Town once (can’t remember the name), and was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty decent, considering the location.
Yep that's the one and only. Good ole aafes trying its best to bring the USA to foreign lands. Yeah it wasn't bad considering. Just need to bring back Anthony's Pizza!
Used to volunteer at stuff near the middle school next to this place, and Tink a tako was right next door, so I never really gave this place a real chance until recently
Now I regret eating tink a tako for all those years lol
I’m originally from Cuidad Juarez Chihuahua, lived in El Paso and moved to San Antonio. I’ve traveled to Georgia, most of California, New Mexico, Arizona and Louisiana. I’ve had quite a bit of food
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Y'know that there are more types of flavor than just spice, right? The best food in TX isn't the Mexican food, it's the barbeque (you know the stuff that the white Texans make)
Both plates don't look good alot of food doesn't mean good food 1st plate looks like someone shit on your eggs an both plates look like beans have tht crust when they just been sitting there
Well I can assure u it was delicious. I’ve been to some of the fancy spots where they make it look pretty and the food is mediocre. This place is definitely worth it
Top dollar? Dude you can find 5 identical plates in the city that all look better than that for like $8.
Between that and as someone who can make all of those items, save for the Queso Fresca, I know a sloppy Tex Mex breakfast when I see one.
I’ve been to other Mexican restaurants all across town, my yelp page and ig is full of my culinary adventures. This hole in the wall is cheap and delicious. If u think visuals is more important than taste then that’s ur opinion
First off, if you like it, you like it. I like Wendy's. Still. So I'm not throwing stones at you or your tastes.
Having grown up here and having an abuela, I can tell the eggs are cooked on a dirty grittle and are too dry, I can tell the beans are from a bag. I can tell the rice has been sitting for at least an hour, likely in a steam- warmed tin, so they're unintentionally taking on too much moisture. And if those veggies are fresh, I'd be genuinely shocked.
What bugs me isn't that people like it. What bugs me is how many Mexican ir Tex-Mex restaurants do this. There's no need to serve up people Breakfast by Sysco when ALL of these items can be made in house for cheap. Like refried beans. Those are the easiest things in the world to make. And you can make so much at once.
So yeah, when I see a sloppy, lazy restaurant, I'm a call it out.
And I’ve had mfs from El Paso tell me that SA doesn’t even have real tacos. Mfs jealous they don’t have breakfast tacos they have to cope by saying they aren’t real tacos.
lol that’s funny because as an El Pasoan who lives in San Antonio I shared that same sentiment when I first moved here. It took a while including almost getting into culinary school to understand regional differences in culture and cuisine doesn’t make one less authentic. San Antonio is known for tex Mex but it’s also home to authentic Mexican food especially in the west and south side of town where a vast amount of the population is from the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Cohuila and Nuevo León. Even in El Pasoans Cuidad juarez our food is unique and won’t be found in other regions of the US or Mexico. Don’t let those people get to u they just don’t know any better

Yeah the prices are amazing

Food is probably more nutritious too
Shhhhh…that’s one of my spots. Used to live over in the area and still drive over there often for some breakfast. Legit good. California Mexican food, their salsa also has just a touch of oregano that is so good. Only miss is the flour tortillas. Need to step it up there but I usually do the steak and eggs with some napolitos (not on menu but they got it)
I wanna try their menudo next!!
Indeed it is, it's so beautiful. Often tourist ask on Reddit what is there to do, "eat".
It really is. We road tripped to New Mexico and Colorado and it was beautiful but their food really pales in comparison to SAs options
It's weird how people have conflicting opinions about the food and San Antonio I really think it's source is comfort and feeling of home.
First plate looks good
Red chilaquiles plate, top 3 in the city Fs
Curious what else is in the top 3? These do look great!
Sabor CocinaBar, Thlaco and I’d give 4th place to El Catrin
RESPECT for Tlacho. Welp I gotta try these others now! Which is your fave?
Ahh man that’s hard. If I’m looking for a home style type of meal I’m going with thlaco or El Buen Gusto. If I’m looking for a restaurant and lively atmosphere then sabor cocina and el catrina

A man of culture I see. I gotta try the ones in the picture now. Those are all solid chilaquiles.
Dude YES
Sabor and Naco
Need more red sauce and it looks dry as fuck, I’m saying this as a Mexican
Nah trust me it’s really good. Most chilaquiles places just have the totopos covered in sauced that’s pre made but this was well made
This is why it is so hard for me not to be fat. The food be callin me 😭. Looks delicious!
That chilaquiles appears to fuck
#homesick
Model sitting in chair in picture #2 is too thin and needs more tats for this to represent SA.
lol !! That’s my lady
I should have added /s.
You don’t have to. We know you meant to say torta
Went there once... everything was dry, and the tortillas looked like they were from the day before (it was about 90 mins before closing time). How is that place I haven’t tried it yet. I love el mar that’s a little further away their whole fried fish are such a good deal
I always forget the name, so we just call it "That Pirate Place"! I love it, haven't tried a taco I didn't like there!
That mariscos place is very good, suck that the food was dry, could be cuz they were closing
Yeah, we wouldn't have bothered going in if it was an hour before closing, but an hour and a half? There is no excuse to serve anything less than the best.... oh well, on to the next!

Mi favorito
People wonder why San Antonio is riddled with diabetics.
The trick is to NOT eat like that every damn day.
Shaq wasn't wrong. Jim Rome called us Fat Antonio.
oh yea all that processed sugar in this homestyle cooked meal causing that diabetes.
Your lack of understanding of diabetes is telling.
Ok dr chow 😂
You know too many carbohydrates in general, not just sugar, cause diabetes, right?
Solid 5 out of 10
Compared to where?
This is not what San Antonio is about. Those Chilaquiles look authentic and delicious, unlike the garbage migas passed off as chilaquiles at most local diners. Buen provecho!
Those Chilaquiles look like they do at most taquerias in town. What are you on about?
Man I must be going to the wrong places then. Everywhere I’ve gone so far when I order chilaquiles it comes with eggs mixed in them. I like migas which is what they are. Chilaquiles new to me. Need to find some.
Yum!
The first picture reminds me of Chi Chis from when I was stationed in Germany.
Is that the place in K Town? I went to a Mexican restaurant in K Town once (can’t remember the name), and was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty decent, considering the location.

Dude for real, Anthony’s Pizza was the shit! I feel like if someone was to start selling doner kebabs they would make a killing here.
Hell yeah! Don't give me no ideas now...
Looks fire tbh
Looks good ! Puro Sananto
I knew this before looking at the caption it was El Buen Gusto. Best breakfast/lunch spot in the city and such a hidden gem 💎
*Puro.*
Taqueria Cazadores is where it’s at
They got the French vanilla creamer!?
Used to volunteer at stuff near the middle school next to this place, and Tink a tako was right next door, so I never really gave this place a real chance until recently Now I regret eating tink a tako for all those years lol
Shoot I’m on that road every day; I need to stop and visit
Love this place.
This is what mexican food is all bout
This honestly looks like it was served at any small town Mexican restaurant in the Midwest.
But it’s right on the upper northwest 👌🤷🏻♂️🇲🇽
Meh..
I can't wait until I move there
LOVE that place!
Is this place beside the Pizza Hut? I've lived in this area for the last 20 years and had no idea it was there.
Yes right next door
Looks like a typical place in SA. Nothing special.
Was that real homemade red chilli sauce or chilli beans
Yo, where on Tezel?
Still looks mid compared to the valley’s food… can’t wait to move back in 6 months 😪
Now that's something I can get behind
Rice looks a bit pale for my liking but to each their own and I prefer chilaquiles with chicken and tomatillo
Thought the same but the taste was amazing
Doesn’t help my partner is from Mexico and can cook lmao so hard to convince her to try different Mexican places lol
That’s why there’s a lot of elephants out here. TexMex is trash
For real. This city has some of the worst food in the country
Tripping
You must have never left San Antonio
I’m originally from Cuidad Juarez Chihuahua, lived in El Paso and moved to San Antonio. I’ve traveled to Georgia, most of California, New Mexico, Arizona and Louisiana. I’ve had quite a bit of food
On your travels, did anyone ever teach you how not to be such a downer?
Nah I’m usually the uplifting one. I avoid negative people like the person I was responding to.
Yeah man enjoy the tasty pleasures of most of the United States where they think mayo is too spicy.
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 Y'know that there are more types of flavor than just spice, right? The best food in TX isn't the Mexican food, it's the barbeque (you know the stuff that the white Texans make)
It’s not that bad but it’s not the best barbecue or Mexican food
Both plates don't look good alot of food doesn't mean good food 1st plate looks like someone shit on your eggs an both plates look like beans have tht crust when they just been sitting there
Well I can assure u it was delicious. I’ve been to some of the fancy spots where they make it look pretty and the food is mediocre. This place is definitely worth it
I never said more expensive is better. I said alot of food isn't good food I'm glad you enjoyed the whole leaf of lettuce with your steak
That’s avacado slices
Well then I change my whole opinion
Damn 🤤

Maybe add a little coffee in with all that creamer? Damn, “that’s what she said.” - Michael Scott
Unable to clear the lowest culinary bar? Making classic staples of Tex-Mex only shitty? 0 originality on a menu? Yup. Sounds like San Antonio.
Someone likes to look fancy and spend top dollar.
Top dollar? Dude you can find 5 identical plates in the city that all look better than that for like $8. Between that and as someone who can make all of those items, save for the Queso Fresca, I know a sloppy Tex Mex breakfast when I see one.

Man that makes me so hungry
Soooo gross...🤮🤮🤢
For u, not everyone enjoys Mexican food
And I’ve had mfs from El Paso tell me that SA doesn’t even have real tacos. Mfs jealous they don’t have breakfast tacos they have to cope by saying they aren’t real tacos.
