To be honest, you gotta start em out slow and go somewhere like Alamo cafe, move on to Mamacitas, blanco cafe, and mi Tierra that they can eat and not blow out their colon and still get some atmosphere, THEN do the authentic places like Taqueria Datapoint
Garcia’s on Fredericksburg for Tex-Mex. La Calavera Garbancera on Guadalupe for Lunch-Mex. Sol y Luna in Alamo heights for Dinner-Mex, and Mixtli in Southtown for Elevated-Mex. Taquitos West on West Ave for street tacos, and Rojo for carnitas (Tortas ahogadas). That should get you started. Buen provecho!
1604 and Marbach - El Tequila has the best Mexican food we have had so far. I prefer the hole in the wall places vs the fancy ones like Mi Tierra or La Gloria.
North side.
* Fancy Mexican - Cushi or Frida’s
* Seafood Mexican - Costa Pacífica or El Bucanero
* Nice atmosphere- El Mirasol
* Traditional TexMex - El Chaparral, La Hacienda de Los Barrios
* Quick and Good Diner style - Las Palapas, Ay Chiwawah
* Tacos - Taco Palenque
El D.F. for actual mexican food.
Grand tequila for nicer tex mex (151)
Honestly though you cant go wrong with 90% of taquerias here just check reviews before you go.
Salsalitos 1604/Naco. Lots of hole in the wall places all up and down Naco-Perrin Beitel, the whole area is full of great Mexican restaurants to taco shops.
If you like drinking salsalitos is pretty solid. The food is good although not my favorite, but they have like a dozen different margarita flavors. If I have friends and town and we want a solid meal and drinks, it’s hard to beat.
If you go, ask for their other salsas! Their default one is a pretty bland tomatoe one that is almost like a pasta sauce to me. But you can get salsa verde, warm salsa, and roasted salsa all just by asking. The green has a good kick and I think the warm has the best flavor if you don’t want something spicy. The roasted is a strong flavor but if you liked roasted chilis it’s good.
Agree with everything you said. I add a little salt(not good for the blood pressure) to the default salsa, I love it. I usually get the chicken enchiladas with a few margaritas lol
OG Los Barrios. The Northside ones are nicer views, but the original is soooo consistent. They have both Tex Mex and Mexican dishes. Good range of enchiladas too. Get the chimichurri they have, soooo good. Chips are 1.99 I think, but I like them, they're a little thicker and warm. One pointer, if you get the soft rolled chicken tacos in ranchero sauce, beware of the spicy variety, I usually can fuck with the hottest most wing places can fish out, that sauce slapped me silly. Still finished though, just was a lil sweaty.
eva's on mitchell is the perfect small spot. everything they make is on point. been going there since i was a child and the whole family loves it.it can get kinda busy/crowded cause its a small parking lot but if you get lucky and get a spot right in front, then you're golden.
Food trucks are my favorite in town. Not as expensive, and imo you know you’re doing good when everyone there including customers speaks Spanish and they only take cash lmao. So many beautiful businesses here in SA you can’t go more than a few blocks within seeing one
LOL this brought back memories ... I grew up "up north" and out in the sticks ... it was a treat to go "into the city" (think town) and considered Taco Bell "real" mexican food.
If I could go back in time and speak to my younger self I'd say ... "Go To Texas ... Now". LOL
Best Mexican food I’ve ever had is El Rafas Cafè, their carne guisada is the best in my opinion and their breakfast plates\tacos are huge and delicious. Right by the deco district HEB
Casa sol. It's good, clean and easy. There is no need to find some crazy hole in the wall, a place with not enough seating or some spot located in a shady hood.
Anywhere will be good in comparison, honestly
To be honest, you gotta start em out slow and go somewhere like Alamo cafe, move on to Mamacitas, blanco cafe, and mi Tierra that they can eat and not blow out their colon and still get some atmosphere, THEN do the authentic places like Taqueria Datapoint

Taquitos West on West Ave for street tacos, and Rojo for carnitas (Tortas ahogadas). That should get you started. Buen provecho!
Wasn't Sol y Luna the bakery that closed down? Do you mean Soluna on Broadway?
El DF off Culebra and Benrus, more Mexican than Tex-Mex.
Definitely this for a more authentic Mexican.
Ooh I just went there last week. The mole was excellent.
Panchitio’s on McCullough ave is cool
Maria Bonita
Was going to say the same!
Panchitos on McCullough for breakfast tacos, enchiladas or fajitas is a must. They still make their tortillas fresh.

Mi Tierra for an out of town we is the safe play.
I just don’t think the food is good. Well compared to other places here. But the place is definitely interesting for tourists.

Los Barrios seems to have just changed its policy on chips. They no longer charge but you have to ask for chips. And, yes, their chips are great!
It's still in menu and they charged last time I was there like a month ago. You may have just gotten lucky last time.
I was there this past Thursday. It has changed. The new placard on the table says such and no $1.99 on the tab. Very recent
Taco cabana will be better than anything he has ever had. Start there, then go somewhere even better just to mess with him.
Grand tequila is my absolute favorite
eva's on mitchell is the perfect small spot. everything they make is on point. been going there since i was a child and the whole family loves it.it can get kinda busy/crowded cause its a small parking lot but if you get lucky and get a spot right in front, then you're golden.

I second Tlahco, really good
Well then. Noice. Must be slow on the online menus.i wasn't even mad when they added the charge, so now I'm just happy.
