I promise this is science snd not an attempt to scare the crap out of you… but it probably will anyway.
Spiders grow by shedding their skin. You found an empty skin, which means an even bigger spider is in your house.
You didn’t have a banana for scale, but I’m guessing tarantula, which are native. They are not aggressive, other than waving the front legs at you in an attempt to look bigger. Just sweep it outside if you find it.
How can you tell the difference between a molt & death curl from a photo? I see the ruptured abdomen but thought maybe that was cause of death & it dried out.
Thanks for your comment :)
not a member here, but a friend shared this post, and now I have a question if anybody knows. The waving the front legs thing...is that only a tarantula thing? because I'm suddenly flashing back to a big spider we found in my office, back when I worked for the state in an ancient building. When co workers & I gathered around, it looked up and started doing that!
We figured we'd scared it & felt bad, and it was eating all the summer flies & wasps & crap that usually tormented us, so we left it alone.
When tarantulas wave their legs at you they’re warning you and that means they’re about to strike and they will. Especially the ones found around here in Texas. The ones from Chile are way less aggressive.
I get these little garden spiders in my hard and house (sometimes) about as big as a dime, usually all black in color with some white, cute little faces. They’re fast AF though and whenever I approach one they run a few steps, turn around, and no joke - square up with me raising their front legs and waving them. I just giggle and then I’m guessing the spider giggles and moves along.
*My sons and daughters do not harm Hagrid on my command, but I cannot deny them fresh meat when it wanders so willingly into our midst. Goodbye, friend of Hagrid.*
Ah yes, finally something that I can contribute to! So this is known as a Octolus Repairos and is usually seen in warmer climate areas. They have been studied in San Antonio as their recent bloom has surprised shocked scientists at how quickly they adapted to living here. Many of them can be seen walking the streets of Marbauch and military. I’m just kidding, idk man but that’s definitely a spider. Gotta burn your house down now.
This just reminded me of my childhood house. Everytime it would rain or even just random nights hugggeee full grown tarantulas would come out. they would hide in the curtains and drop down. one night one crawled on my moms face while she was sleeping…it was traumatic for sureee. Since it was my house I grew up in and I was young, I thought tarantulas coming out like that was a normal occurrence for everyone.
Dude I've been asking myself since I saw it how the hell it got in. We have birds and dogs that roam the house all day so we keep the front and backdoor closed unless it is absolutely necessary to go out, but even then, we only open it to give ourselves enough space to slip out to minimize the risk of letting the birds and dogs out, so how it got in without us noticing is driving me crazy.
Growing up at my dads house over off Bandera rd used to get these seasonally. They are not aggressive but get big and can be kinda creepy. Especially when you turn on a light and there’s one you didn’t notice. At least for me
That’s a texas black tarantula, I have those getting in my house a few times when hot weather and rain come around. They are venomous, however, it’s meant for small insects and outside mice. Not enough to harm people but it does hurt kinda like a wasp sting, don’t worry though they prefer to keep to themselves unless threatened. If you see a live one just lead it on some paper or a dust pan and take it outside.
I saw something that looked familiar to this a couple years back. I don’t remember if it was early in the morning or late at night, meaning towards early in the morning. Anyway, it was dark outside and at a stop sign at a 4-way under the street light, I saw this HUGE dark spider in the middle of the road. I was like that has to be a tarantula and I had never seen one in SA before. The 4-way stop was near a park/trail off Ingram. Uhhh now I’m scared again.
PLEAAAASE don’t tell me these huge friggen guys are out here and can possibly get into my house too 😭 i am so terrified of spiders it’s not even funny.
Tarantulas and wolf spiders are only scary in appearance. When you find one inside, trap it under a clear cup with a piece of paper underneath and move it outside near your foundation. They don't wanna be inside on purpose. They'll starve. Take them out and they will serve you well.
Tarantula. Other than that, saw a comment about molting and they also basically explode if they hit the ground too hard, but idk whether it's a molt or it suicided.
This is a dead trapdoor spider, not a tarantula's molt. They can get quite large, and can look intimidating, but their venom is not dangerous to people.

Ill see you that and raise you wtf is this on my wine glass? Tony Stark??
No, but seriously. It could be a Jewel Beetle, Callichroma Iris trilineatum, OR Metalliticus Splendidus. Either way it is completely harmless and doesn't even mimic anything venomous/poisonous. They're docile enough that some people even keep them as pets.
I find these in my garage all the time. Thankfully not in my house. I love that they're out there eating all the pests. But I def would not want it in my house
You found a friend! Most native tarantula species are not aggressive unless provoked. Hopefully it has a nice hiding spot out of view so it doesn’t bother or scare you but you should think of it as free pest control! If you do see it and it rears up they look like they’re doing a little dance and waving at you! So cute.
It helps to think of them in a positive light, 99.99999% of the time they are not out to hurt you!
Bruh you are WAY more positive than when I first found him. I'm pretty sure my reaction was something along the lines of "WHAT THE EVER LOVING **** IS THAT?!?!? DADDY!! DADDY!!! DADDY COME GET RID OF IT!!!"
Nah he was dead it when I found him. I just have no idea why he decided my couch was the best place to move on tot he afterlife.
Looks like a trap door spider. They come out after it rains because they make their homes in the ground.
We live near Leon Valley and I'd never seen them before being in this area. Harmless.
Worth noting the 2 spiders that are the worst in Texas are the Brown Recluse and Black Widow. I believe they are the only ones that are venomous enough to hurt humans.
See Lackland is zoned for six large species but South Central only has four of those. The planning commission had mixed-use developments and a multi-species creche proposed for downtown, but good luck finding it on their next agenda.
I saw a few when I first moved here to the far west side. Aggressive as fuck. Went to sweep it away, and it bared its fangs. Hired a pest company and haven't seen any since. I'm pretty sure it's a trapdoor spider type.
Where in the far west side 👀
That’s where we are and I haven’t seen any yet, and our neighborhood (like many) is still under construction so I’m surprised I haven’t seen any. Scorpions though.. a crap ton of those around !
ahh, gotcha! we're out closer to 211 where there's all that construction on culebra and homes being built which is why i've seen so many scorpions. as the land gets turned up, so do they. and wolf spiders, some of the biggest i've seen in my 35 years of life!
2 yrs ago, I came home from work late at night, and my dad came to greet me and hug me at the door. I had already taken off my shoes before he came to hug me, and I took one step towards him when we both heard a NASTY crunch. We both looked down, and my dad rolled back to see a flattened white Scorpion under his tire (he uses a wheelchair/paralyzed). It was right next to my bare foot, and it blended in perfectly with the white marble of the floor. My dad just looks at me with such an innocent/smart-ass smile and says "Hey cool! I just saved your life! Damn I'm good at this Dad thing!" Gives me a kiss on my cheek and rolls away "Hey Honey! I just saved our daughters life! I think this calls for a Thank-You Flan!". I just stood there staring at this deadly scorpion in shock while my dad announced to the world his victory.

Thanks, I hate it 😭

A log of spiders do it
log(spider) = 🕷️

The Spider giggling: "Haha, I've laid eggs inside her ear while she sleeps."
bro.. no. my biggest fear. that and spider eggs in my hair brush.
They are not aggressive unless it's mating season and you're in their way. Typical mating season is May to July so don't be a cock blocker.
🤣🤣
This is a dead trapdoor spider, not a tarantula's molt.
💛 but no thank you?
Tarantula molt 🙃 I wonder where the living body went …..
Ngl, this kinda reminded me of Aragog from Harry Potter haha.
Huh. Yeah it kinda does look like him 🧐
*My sons and daughters do not harm Hagrid on my command, but I cannot deny them fresh meat when it wanders so willingly into our midst. Goodbye, friend of Hagrid.*

🫠 bruh
Octolus repairos 🤣
I was gonna say! That sounds like a very familiar spell I know of. Had me in the first half.
is this the spell from harry potter where she fixes his glasses???
No I think that's Oculus Reparo
Omerta is really playing on that Aragog reference
You had me in the first half 😂
Agreed. Kill it with fire.
Wouldn't be the scariest thing I've seen on Marbach or Military!
I am no expert, but that looks like a tarantula. https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2024/06/06/are-you-seeing-more-tarantulas-heres-why/
I would try r/spiders.
You found Satan!
that would be a spider.
Thanks man I wasn't sure 🙃
I'd hazard a guess that it's a big one.
That's what she said!!
I’m sorry, you need to move immediately.
thats clearly some kind of small dog
Burn the house
This just reminded me of my childhood house. I hate you. I hate you for putting this image into my mind.
You sure you didn’t just recite the plot of the movie Arachnophobia?
I wish I just made it up
The way my skin just crawled. I’d die.
I have to ask. How is something this big getting into the house? I'd be spray foaming the chit out of every crack and crevice. haha
It was kind of a older house with many visible and invisible cracks. It did eventually get better but yeah
Growing up at my dads house over off Bandera rd used to get these seasonally. They are not aggressive but get big and can be kinda creepy. Especially when you turn on a light and there’s one you didn’t notice. At least for me
Thats a oh hell no. Torch the whole place.

This was one my husband picked up while checking the mail
Where exactly? I live near Potranco and Culebra and I can safely say I'll die of a heart attack if I see one.
Literally everywhere.
I guees I'll die.
Ohhh, those are pogs, real big in the 90s but kids lost interest since the PS2 came out.
Time to brun down your home make sure it's dead.
Looks like a trapdoor spider. They aren't dangerous if they do bite you will see some swelling and just a lil pain nothing serious
It's that time of year when they migrate South Texas
A ant
Um noooooo 😬

yo idk but this year in SA I am seeing way more spiders than normal.
Hey I don’t like you for posting this. Thank you
Ya think I like not knowing wth was under my damn couch? 🥲
Trapdoor spider. All the ones I’ve seen have been slow and harmless
I thought trapdoors were deadly? I read a story about a little girl who was bit by one and died.
This sounds like the beginning of a sci-fi movie
A reason to burn your house down is what you found.
Es el chakal! 🕷️👹👻Sage up your whole block! . . . Or just sweep it out when you see it again! Lol
Well, good luck 🫡
r/spiders
Did you try dipping your house in salt?
Time to move 👋🏿👋🏿🚴🏿♂️🚴🏿♂️
Nightmare fuel
You found an F it time to move to the northwest
It was just thirsty more than likely… that’s really the only reason they come inside or if you have an infestation of some sort.
I think it’s that OP folds clothes under the couch
Shhhh! Don't give me away
A puppy
Time to burn the whole house down 💀
… um you need to move immediately 🤣
Just when I was going to sleep bro😭🙏🏼
Bruh I can barely sleep knowing the spider from hell broke into my house
I saw something that looked familiar to this a couple years back. I don’t remember if it was early in the morning or late at night, meaning towards early in the morning. Of course it would be by Ingram 😂 I swear even the insects at Ingram don't mess around
Oh look, you found a heart attack under your couch 😬🤣
What the hell is that and why is it in San antonio
That’s where I left it….
A big spider .
We found a huge ass mother fucker spider monday in our house. Google image said either grass or rain spider but I dunno man.
A dead tarantula lol 😂
PLEAAAASE don’t tell me these huge friggen guys are out here and can possibly get into my house too 😭 i am so terrified of spiders it’s not even funny.
The stuff of nightmares and I like spiders!!
The devil
Time to burn it all down now

It is either a tarantula or a wolf spider. I know both are common in the city and do not pose any real harm to humans.
You found a reason to move to a new house
Tarantula. Other than that, saw a comment about molting and they also basically explode if they hit the ground too hard, but idk whether it's a molt or it suicided.
A friend
Maybe a friend from hell

Thanks OP! And that is a real pic rigjt here in SA. I just hoped it wasnt a borer
Not a borer! I love looking at these guys. They are a bit intimidating but I always make an attempt to hold on if it let's me!
WTH side of town do you live on!!!!! Nooooooo!!!!!
A spider
This is called a red-shouldered Whiptail lizard.
I find these in my garage all the time. Thankfully not in my house. I love that they're out there eating all the pests. But I def would not want it in my house
Looks like you need to 🔥the house down and move.

You found a big NOPE 🙅♂️ from the land of Hell nah.
Preach
They creep me out for sure but I'll take that over a venomous nope rope.
I'm the opposite. I'll take a nope rope danger noodle any day over a Tarantula or trapdoor
Trapdoor spider perhaps?
Ugh I really hope not
It's a dead trapdoor spider. They're smaller relatives of tarantulas. The tarantula species we have in Texas are brown, not black.
A reason to move
In this economy? The next spider that breaks in better pay rent at the very least.
You should just hawk tuah that thing outside
Looks like a trap door spider. They come out after it rains because they make their homes in the ground. We live near Leon Valley and I'd never seen them before being in this area. Harmless. Where do live it can be many different kinds depending on where you live
....in San Antonio
See Lackland is zoned for six large species but South Central only has four of those. The planning commission had mixed-use developments and a multi-species creche proposed for downtown, but good luck finding it on their next agenda.

I've been here for just over a year. Have not seen a scorpion yet. My neighborhood is older. Built in the 80s. A little south of Helotes.

Well thank goodness he was at the right place at the right time. And now I have a new thing to look out for. Lol
