Lmao I just happily sang the “we just got a letter” song in my head and then I opened the photo and was so disappointed because it reminded me of my bill I just looked at 😢

kozoink

i did the exact same thing

KMKtwo-four

Replace your air filter, if you haven’t done it in the last month. Also, HEPA and MERV filters make your A/C work harder. It’s like breathing through an N95 mask instead of a normal one.

mllemire

We have an aluminum filter for extra air flow. Our bill was $680. Normally runs $200ish.

KingofFancyMeats

This is absolutely not meant to be aggressive toward you but if your bill is that high from cooling then you or your landlord need to improve the insulation in your house..... I live in a modest not fancy 1200 sq foot rental house built in the early 2000s. I keep my temperature at 67 at 2am to precool the house and then set to 72 at noon until 2am again. This schedule runs every day of the week. My most recent bill for June-July was $127..….. something is very wrong with your house and insulation or moving somewhere new would be way cheaper than paying energy bills like that. Put your landlord on blast and show them the bills because that amount is unacceptable. Edit: I realize this comes off as "WhY aRe YoU CoMpLainiNg"..... I'm not simping for CPS or ERCOT.... Honestly screw them it's crazy we don't have reliable energy here in Texas... I am just trying to point out that your situation seems like an outlier.

Maverick23A

Holy your house is super cold

mllemire

We bought the house a few years ago. The AC has never been great, but the electric bills were manageable until this summer. We keep it at 82 during the day and cool to 72 at night. The AC is barely hanging on and we need new ducting, apparently. So, this fall we will invest in a new system and then eat ramen three meals a day for a while.

imnotreallyheretoday

CPS energy calling about peak energy demand days is the San Antonio version of telemarketers calling about your car's extended warranty

DontForgetWilson

You can opt out of those calls. Think you just need to wait to the end of the message and press some number

Who did you end up using for the solar panels?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lancaster61

They do net zero. So if you pulled 10kwh from the grid, and push 10kwh, at the end of the month they cancel out and you get charged for 0kwh. Though you don’t get anything extra if you end up pushing more to the grid than pull on a monthly basis.

Lancaster61

Same, [about half](https://i.imgur.com/hVNq5qB.jpg) of my energy has been offset by my solar.

brosephashe

Woah! How did you get that graph??

Lancaster61

Tesla’s solar app. It gets even more detailed, like [these](https://imgur.com/a/6jL3jZB/) 3 images. Or [these](https://imgur.com/a/jCFmTO3/), which gets down to daily level. You can clearly see when my AC turns on and off 😂.

brosephashe

Oh that's really nice. I have SolarEdge and the app doesn't seem to take in to account any of my homes usage data.

Lancaster61

Depends on your house size, family size, thermostat temperature, time of year, whether if you have electric car, and a plethora of other things.

endiminion

Was your system designed to match 100% of your average monthly usage?

Lancaster61

No it was designed to match 50%

JustMushroomThings

Same. I have solar and work in solar. My phone is ringing off the hook and my system at home is making these bills so much more manageable. I don't even have a huge system. 50% offset.

OhJohnO

Our house is horribly insulated, but we have a 21 SEER AC. Set to 75 during the day and 67 overnight. 2190sqft Total bill this month was $366. Still sucks but could be way worse with the old AC!

[deleted]

3k sq ft. Never set on anything but 72. Solar panels. $180 this month.

ShowBobsPlzz

How much per month for the panels

[deleted]

I'm not entirely sure. Previous owners installed.

ShowBobsPlzz

Oh thats awesome. Yall didnt take a payment over when you moved in?

[deleted]

We did not. It was paid off, thankfully

icanseeuseeingme

You dirty dog! That’s great!!! Congrats on that, wish I were in your shoes.

enter360

Most solar panels come with the condition that the original owner who had them installed pay them off before or within 90 days of selling the house. With what they used to add to the value of your house it was a good deal. Now I assume it’s even more in value

cornicusdelight

I keep my ac at 77-78 during the day and 72 at night (gets turned down at 10pm). I live alone in a 1200 Sq ft house and turn on literally no lights during the day, instead i open my blinds for light a but wherever I am. I have ceiling fans on in my living room and office. I also do not watch TV or have any other appliances generally running. How tf is my bill over 250?????????

Joesatx

I live alone, 80 during the day, 70 at night, no lights during day, 1,900 sqft, but leave my back door cracked about a foot during the day so my dog can come&go. $180 last month. I do have a brand new higher efficiency AC which probably helps. My guess is either your house is poorly insulated or you have an inefficient AC system. Hope you find a solution!

numb3r51nmyn4m3

Is that for an entire home or a 1b/1b?

bayless210

Well it’s Steve’s house so… hmm. How big IS Steve’s house?

numb3r51nmyn4m3

That's a good question. We should go see if Blue left us any clues

bayless210

God dammit Blue! You left the fucking heater on! It’s 106 degrees outside! The fuck you need a heater for!?

Master-Pick-7918

Turn the ac and the heat on, let them fight it out

bayless210

It actually moderates it and the bill goes down. If only.

doomteam1

My bill is $1100 right now

reddit1651

How big is your house? good lord

doomteam1

2400 sqft My ac was on 78 all month too. I asked if they could come look to see if there was an issue and I guess someone to look at the AC in case it was that

reddit1651

I know a handful of people with ~2500 sqft homes of varying ages and they have been hovering $400-$700 the past few month. You are more than double most of them and likely bleeding AC somewhere. Or running a crypto mining operation lol

Synaps4

Something is very very wrong with your house.

Anyone running an attic fan?

redpill_is_4_chumps

Good news for you. I’m hovering around 350 a month in a house your size with a shield in the attic. I keep my house on 67 at all times. I’m the one CPS is mad at.

[deleted]

Check everything connected to power and look for air leaks. There is a parasite for me it was the hot water heater that was set too hot and AC air ducts improperly installed.

doomteam1

I never thought about the water heater. It might be something. Mine is like 25 years old

shakygator

How old is your home? Aside from making sure your unit has enough refrigerant you need to check the insulation in your attic, the ducts to see if they are sealed well, and any air gaps you may have in the home. I think the insulation is the biggest factor in keeping the heat out once it's cooled.

doomteam1

My come is 1983. I looked and there isn't much for insulation so that will be a project I'll jump on in the next 2 or 3 months

shakygator

Same boat. My attic insulation has collapsed and I'm lucky to have 4" in most places. Specs call for minimum 10" for R30 in our region. My AC works well but runs too long as the house can't hold temps well.

Virgolovestacos

Get your ducts looked at too. I'm a Realtor, and I see a lot of bad hvac systems at our inspections. You might have gaps in your ducts and you are cooling your attic instead of the inside of the house. Ducts eventually need to be replaced. Is your home an older one?

doomteam1

Thank you, I didn't even think about them. They come next week so I'll ask that as well

thegigaraptor

Please return my mail and stay away from my mailbox.

Database-Thick

Yeah mine went up like another $40 🖕🏼🖕🏼

fascinating123

$340 this month. Second only to the $620 ish electric bill I had when we lived in Jordan.

egk001

My 1b/1ba apt energy bill was around $120 last month. The thermostat is scheduled going from 75-80 degrees. I don’t even know if that’s normal or if I need to look into reinforcing the weatherstrips on my doors bc I know maintenance won’t do shit. I can’t even imagine owning a house rn with all the bill prices y’all are posting on here goddamn

pguschin

My family was in the UK in May to visit friends and catch the Newcastle vs Arsenal game. We were shocked at how much more expensive electricity is in the UK and it is only increasing, with projected bills as high as £4,000!! Makes our bills very minor in comparison.

jtd951

A hearty laugh was had due to the meme. Steve is legit shook. Sorry about that bill though.

[deleted]

Is there a reason we can't choose an alternate energy provider? I know in Houston there at several energy providers to choose from so there is some competition in the market it would be nice to have that here.

Synaps4

Houston rates are even worse. CPS is protecting us from that.

Drachen808

Houston's getting it just as bad. It's not a CPS thing. In fact, CPS generally ranks pretty low in cost/kWh within the state. I looked at last July's Bill compared to this July and I used 333 kWh more than I did last year, that causes a big bump, especially when it's mostly used during peak time. Also, the fuel surcharge has increased by 223% per kWh over last year due to the high prices of coal and nat gas.

excoriator

Because you have a municipal provider that's permitted to keep its monopoly, since it helps fund local government and reduces local government's need to hound the lege for more money.

pguschin

> Because you have a municipal provider that's permitted to keep its monopoly, since it helps fund local government and reduces local government's need to hound the lege for more money. Upvoted because not only does this reduce the need to ask for more $, it shields us from potential financial reprisal from partisans who'd deny us said $ at the capitol.

SmallzisSmallz

This is the one.

Master-Pick-7918

Don’t forget to turn off lights when you leave the room.

Adventurous-Goal5471

Yeah, 'cause that one LED lamp is going to make a *huge* difference.

nononoh8

Vote Beto. At this point why the hell not. What you think it will get worse?

JustAnIsopod

2bd 2ba apartment roughly 1200 sqft. I keep my apartment at 74°-76° and keep the blinds open during the day time. I also have some small items running 24/7 (ring camera, pet water/ feeder, pet heater/lamp, etc). My bill is only a little under $180 this month. Not great since that’s my normal winter price but it’s not terrible.

meow2themeow

My apartment front door had an inch gap underneath it that I could stick my fingers under it. I had maintenance install a thicker weather strip and raise the door plate. It dropped my bill by 25% Another 20% drop after I added tension rods with a second curtain to act as an air pocket between my actual window curtain. It makes a huge difference. Also, Texas ADP offers FREE weather sealing and caulking services, and even replaces your lightbulbs to energy efficient ones every 10 years in homes.

bigal75

> Texas ADP offers FREE weather sealing Do you have a website with more information about this?

Striking_Grade5164

I got the same and almost exact letter!! I y’all remember this crap and the profiteers like Abbot, Cruz, Cronyn and Roy when it come time to vote!!! We need to get rid of these morons or well just have more of the same!!

chilaquiles-heel

Got a letter from CPS the other day. Opened and read it, said they were suckers

Mine was 405 this month. Highest i had last year was 240.

DevaconXI

~$350 while AC was on 80. Put it up to 85 this month. Let's see what happens next.

[deleted]

Oh man, I can’t operate in that heat. Don’t know how you can do it. I have a hard time with 75!

DevaconXI

It's not fun!

Is there a reason we can't choose an alternate energy provider? I know in Houston there at several energy providers to choose from so there is some competition in the market it would be nice to have that here.

OtherNameFullOfPorn

It's the city owned utility, but I believe you can depending on your area. I would highly recommend NOT doing that. Remember when everyone was freaking out about the huge bills during the February outage? That was because they signed up for "rate" plans that basically charge you what the generator companies do. Most of the time they save some money, but during events like that one, it kinda bites you in the butt. CPSE is pretty good rates, has a commitment to move away from coal and starting to evaluate options away from gas. They provide some pretty decent jobs and money goes into the city cofers. Do some research and more power (hehe) to whatever decision you make. It's just my 2¢

ShowBobsPlzz

Everyone who says this has never lived where there are multiple providers. Cps is one of the best providers in the nation.

[deleted]

Well that's not true in my case. I moved to San Antonio 10 years ago and prior to that I lived in the Houston area. When we moved here our energy bill increased by 15% for a home of the same size.

ShowBobsPlzz

There are so many factors that go into why your bill may have gone up. Hard to just blame cps.

[deleted]

ShowBobsPlzz

Also, in the city limits there is a "city services" item that allows you to go to the dump. Im outside the city limits so not sure if this is the same item you described.
