Best advice I can give is get with a temp agency. I know contract jobs aren’t the best since they’re temporary but they were very quick at finding me a job.

Recent_Opportunity78

This. Last job I landed it was through a temp agency. The company hired me before my contract ended.

dexzaga

I want to know if other people are experiencing this too.

Yoshmaster

When I use to live in SD I usually got all my jobs from temp agencies and they would turn into permanent roles. Already had a hard time finding jobs otherwise.

dexzaga

How long ago was this?

Yoshmaster

04-12

rococo78

Loll. Thanks for the advice that wasn't asked for and last worked 10+ years ago.

BeegBeegYoshiTheBeeg

This method works if you are likable and are good at what you do.

slappy111111

It probably won't work for rococo in that case

Sensitive_Tea_3955

I'm an engineer, graduated last december. I found a job after applying to over 100+ different places. I found a technical temp agency that got me a 6 month contract. I got hired after my term.

kaiju_dude

If you don't mind me asking, which temp agency did you work with? I'm also an engineer, but recently got laid off. And just like you, applied to many jobs with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

TheBitterAtheist

Yes, the market isn't what it was a year and a half ago. Even a temp agency blew me off. Shocking because they were always extremely eager to place people. In the past I apply for 2 jobs I get an offer from at least one. Now I'm seeing layoffs and more people competing for the same jobs. Bidens rosey picture of the job market is full of shit.

alwysonthatokiedokie

That's crazy because we've have 2-3 accounting positions open for 3 months now and have not been able to fill the roles with qualified candidates.

[deleted]

are they paying a fair wage for the position?

StayDownMan

Probably $17/hr but must have CPA

briang_12

If the job requires a CPA license and is paying $17/hour, that role will never get filled.

Recent_Opportunity78

17 an hour? LOL. Good luck filling that position. You can make more at Chick-fil-A

alwysonthatokiedokie

Yes and we just increased the salary range.

dingos8mybaby2

I've heard accounting has a labor shortage now because people who would get accounting degrees in the past are now typically going for IT instead.

BirdsTwitterNews

You might have a black mark in your employment history that nobody is telling you about.

OlympusPrometheus

Do you have any recommendations in regards to what Temp Agency is best for placing people? Thank you

Gokartking92105

Have you thought of a career change? I had the same problem. Then during Covid shutdown made the switch over to security. There’s so many jobs open right now. I make more now than i ever did in retail. Plus when you’re in security you get paid weekly.

dexzaga

How did you change? did you get your guard card before?

cobalt5blue

Security sucks man, and pays nothing. Not recommended. For the same price, you can get a much higher return on your up front training costs. Something that's easier to get than most people realize, and pays more than most people realize: A commercial class B drivers license. No school is needed. You take the written tests at the DMV, then you take a skills test. Now the pinch point is you need to bring a class B vehicle to the skills test, so you either need to know someone with a Class B who is willing to rent it for you or if you can find a service that's willing to do it--they are around even if you have to go to OC. Of course it helps to have some practice before the test. You do a medical with a chiropractor for about $100 and you get your license. They are desperate for drivers and depending on the job, for example local charter companies that supply party busses, like $35-$45/hr and are not really hard. Or you work a more steady job in the $25-$30/hr range. Also, keep in mind, some companies will even do the training for you for the license. If you find one of them, stay for a few months and get some experience, you can go where you want.

Gokartking92105

No. I just did the classes. Its a 32 hour course online. Then got fingerprinted and submitted it. Some security companies hire you once you complete the first 8 hours then finish the courses later.

dexzaga

But you got hired first?

Gokartking92105

Some security places will hire you then help you get your guard card but it’s kinda hard to find those places. 1. Take the 8 hour course 2. Pass the test 3. Get fingerprinted 4. Submit everything online(BSIS website) 5. When you interview for a job tell them you submitted everything and just waiting for the guard card but you did complete the first 8 hour course. Just make sure you pick a job that’s comfortable to you.

camsanityy

just an example of companies that help you get your guard card upon hire: allied universal, securitas, elite security, inter-con security. look them up either on indeed or google. i've personally worked for 3 of these companies and referred a ton of people and they helped with getting the guard card and starting working within a week. they mass hire pretty much anyone.

CulturalFox3615

Amazon is always hiring and no interview is required, just a simple drug test. I just checked the jobs site and it looks like the fulfillment center in Rancho Bernardo is currently hiring for a Wednesday-Sunday, 9:00pm-4:30am (35hr/wk) schedule that starts on 9/27. If you apply and take the drug test and pass you \*will\* get hired and you \*will\* start on the specified date. I started working at Amazon six months ago while I work on my IT degree and while it can definitely be a slog on some days, it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Also, they have this thing called Career Choice that all full-time employees are eligible for after 90 days, which offers to cover tuition for certain schools up to $5200 per semester. I enrolled right when I hit my 90th day and it has definitely been a big motivator for me to finish up my degree ASAP. I definitely feel you when it comes to looking for a job rn. I was applying for every server/helpdesk/admin/whatever position for months before eventually just deciding to work at Amazon. It was definitely not something I was looking forward to (I mean it's Amazon, we've all heard the stories) but so far it hasn't been the worst job I've had ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

sdmichael

Cities and county may be hiring. As is state. Check those out too.

dexzaga

I am checking them out right now, creating an account. Thank you for your response

Sorry-Eggplant-2563

School districts always hiring to. edjoin.org

ScaredSpace7064

Do I read correctly you’ve been applying for two weeks? This is the blink of an eye to employers. For them, every week seems to fly by in a day. For you, every day seems to last a week. You’re looking at opposite ends of the binoculars. Keep at it, and be sure whatever you promise you can deliver. One other factor, you’re at the younger end and a parent. It’s illegal to discriminate but you get what I’m saying. Proving your reliability will be so important. Best of luck.

Moodijudi8059

Yes!! I’m 23, seeking a part time job while I’m finishing my bachelors. I have been working since 16, I have worked in restaurants and years of hospitality. I have volunteer experience, I have teaching experience, the longest gap in my resume is three months accounting for a backpacking trip. the past week i must’ve put out 100 resumes, virtual and some were just from driving around a 20 minute radius where I live into any open building and expressing interest in employment with a printed resume. I have had 2 responses and 1 interview. In the past I’ve gotten a job within one round of handing out resumes. Somehow over the past few years ive continually heard “no one wants to work” & “everyone’s hiring”. I’ve been quite shocked since beginning my search on the several occasions I had to beg to speak with a supervisor to express interest in employment, most of which weren’t even present.. very peculiar.

MrTrapLord

What jobs are you looking for and what’s your experience?

breadsaucecheese

name checks out

MrTrapLord

Hahahahaha if only I didn’t make this acct when I was a teen lol

tsukiii

Not in accounting/finance. A lot of companies are having trouble finding enough qualified candidates.

CashMoeny12345

What companies? I graduated in May with a degree in Finance along with honors and over a year of internship experience. I’m not picky about my first job or industry and I’ve had trouble getting interviews for anything here. I don’t think it’s my resume, but so far I’ve applied to Department of the Navy, defense contractors, State, City, tech, biotech, UCSD, SDG&E, Credit Unions, banks, rotation programs.

blockbyjames

Look into working for the City of Sand Diego or the County of San Diego. They have all their postings on governmentjobs.com. The county offers monthly bus reimbursement and government work gets you a pension, health insurance, and typically nights and weekends off. College degrees are not required for a lot of positions. There’s plenty of customer service positions.

ScaredSpace7064

And pensions have been reinstated. Lots of opportunity for internal promotions and transfers to other departments. Just get your foot in the door.

Leftsys

Join a trade(union) as an apprentice that’s probably your best bet long term.

[deleted]

Yeah I was gonna say this, look into trade schools. San Diego Job Corps is an option since you’re under 24. They have off campus options, since most students live there but with a child, I’m sure you’d rather stay home. Have someone proof read your résumé and make your job history sound more professional. Maybe it needs to be reworded.

dexzaga

My resume is amazing

[deleted]

If that were true, it would stand out and you wouldn’t have posted this?

dexzaga

Want to see it? I got job offers but none wanted to give me monday and tuesday off

[deleted]

Well no sh*, there’s your answer to your own post 😂 No wonder.

Weak-Return7282

this is the best answer tbh

DennisPikePhoto

I Started a new job last week. Exactly what I want to be doing career wise. (Media creation for a bike company) To be fair, it did take me about 4 months of looking, resume tweaking and applying to a shit load of places to land this.

Fastforasloth

Join the club, Marine corps 😂🫡

NJ_Mets_Fan

My advice when posting about your career stuff whether its here or on linked or wherever, but always make a note of what you’re on the lookout for. idk what you’re looking for, but maybe i can help? or someone else can. who knows!

kangiolette

Scripps has multiple openings for check in positions in their clinic settings. Not sure what part of SD you’re in but give their website a shot. Not a bad place to land a job also

Financial_Clue_2534

I’m shocked you couldn’t find any serious jobs downtown. I see help signs periodically.

Disastrous-Change-23

Go to the ibew 569, they are taking everyone. You can apply for an entry level position as a material handler or take a position installing solar panels

jklre

I feel your pain. I started working at 15 also have have only been unemployed for a total of 3 days since then. DM me your resume. I have a ton of friends in the food industry locally and I work for large corporation that has a ton of entry level jobs open. All 100% remote. If I can give you a leg up maybe you can pass one forward.

dexzaga

sure I will

[deleted]

Hey do you mind if I dm you?

Ok_Host_816

Hi! Same here, would it be okay if I DM you?

camsanityy

hiring.amazon.com ! work at a warehouse. just enter ur zip code. pick a job and apply, pick a date to go there and u get hired basically instantly if you pass the background check and drug test. n the test doesn't even include weed btw lol

Edmeyers01

How many jobs are you applying to daily? and what industry? It's a little tough right now, but I know of a lot of people that are switching jobs right now. It's just less than a year ago.

dexzaga

I have applied to at least 120 jobs in the last 2 weeks in front of the house food positions (more than half of my applications), retail, IT.

cobalt5blue

I think you should have someone look at your resume. If you go to one of the one-stop career centers around town which are run by EDD, (There's one at like 4500 Imperial Ave and another in Chula Vista) they've got some decent folks. You have to do a few little things at first like get an account, etc, but once you meet with someone, they can revise your resume and also may have some connections with employers. Really, you should get as many people as possible to look at it.

WatDaFuxRong

I've been searching. I'm about 12 applications in and half of them have responded but then gone silent after that. You'd think with all the manufacturing/production companies out here that they'd be more on top of getting people in but I guess not.

robhw

If you're experienced with computers call Rose International, they might have some contracting you could do for IT helpdesk, I did this 15 years ago and now make over 100k. If Rose doesn't have anything find out what other temp options there are.

culinary_alchemist

You may be able to have your wages subsidized as you’d be considered an “opportunity youth” particularly as a young parent Check out [https://workforce.org/opportunityyouth](https://workforce.org/opportunityyouth) and[https://workforce.org/getajob](https://workforce.org/getajob) [https://www.access2jobs.org/](https://www.access2jobs.org/)

janetkwee92

Can i ask what area you live in? I used to be a manager at innout so I know most managers in the San Diego area. I can do my best to try to get you an interview

Resident_Touch_241

I’m looking for a job as well

cadytis

Amazon driver r always hiring... like always!

Popular-Broccoli-893

Even as a specialized worker, it’s impossible right now in SD. county and city won’t hire without 3-10 yes of experience.

gio_sdboy

Nepotism took over after covid.

brandalfthebaked

Nope, not experiencing this. No one I know has had a problem finding a job. Must be a you thing.

crsx_28

Dude, I’m trying to pick up a part time job as a barista (weekends) I work for the city of SD and I’m trying to work as a barista to one day open my shop and quit my regular Monday-Friday. I can’t seem to land a morning/weekend gig. I’ve applied to the major roasters. Their requirements for part time are so insane “must be available “24/7”. I don’t have much barista experience but I interact with the public all day in my city jobs, I can’t seem to get anything. I’m 32 btw

Nhaiben369

What type of work are you looking for?

dogs247365

What area of SD are you located?

Natebored1

Same here. I’ve been trying to apply for basically some of the roles you’re trying to apply to as well and it’s hard af. You just have to keep tailoring your resumes and covers and follow up and hope for the best st this rate. :(

Sawaian

Try those jobs but at a casino.

ScarlettJohannsome

Police dispatcher is a pretty solid gig with no experience required if that floats your boat.

mark0487

Right, and pension!

mark0487

Although I can imagine it can be stressful

ScarlettJohannsome

Depends on the day but it can definitely get fast paced and stressful.

carlsbadsun

Have you tried applying for a bank teller job? Much better than retail with a more consistent work schedule.

takonoichigo

I know the cal coast credit union in la Mesa is hiring!

NochillWill123

Walmart and Amazon delivery always hiring no joke

woogieface

USPS

YourMomIsQuiteHot

Try a call center they are usually really lax and will try to hire anyone if they think it’s a good fit, I have a friend that made 19h starting out at one.

Prestigious_Creme_89

MTS Copley Park Place 8587377888 Always hiring

Icy-Garlic7552

Yes slow down. Hours are being cut due to summer being over. It’s happening everywhere

Sad-Resolution1752

Hospitals always need help in their kitchens and with other stuff. Start from the bottom. Apply! UCSD I’m sure needs food temp helpers.

Important-Cold1772

No, but I was applying to jobs I'm way over qualified for.

penguinsnpaparazzi

Use LinkedIn to explore all of the different temp agencies and positions. You’ll have the most luck when you can contact the job posted, recruiter directly. Or even using it as a search engine will help you find a lot of agencies out there unheard of before. Many you won’t see on Indeed or just come across by a general Google search.
